During his examination of Jesus, the Roman governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, asked Jesus, "What is truth?" Earlier in John's account, however, Jesus proclaims that He is "the way, the truth and the life." Yet what if someone rejects Jesus and what He says of Himself? What is truth for them? To whom or to what do they turn? This week we pick up our conversation with philosopher and president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Dr. Jamie Dew and examine some postmodern concepts of truth. We are also giving away a copy of Jamie's 2017 book Understanding Postmodernism: a Christian Perspective. What is postmodernism? Its tacit influence permeates the media, art, music, literature, history, architecture, and even how many attempt to understand the Bible. Postmodernism tends to be suspicious of history, of objective truth, and of overarching meta-narratives which comprehensively attempt to explain reality. This week and next on the Profile, philosopher and president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Dr. Jamie Dew, explains what postmodernism is, how it began, and how Christians can intelligently engage those who adhere to its often contradictory and confusing assertions.Dr. Jamie Dew is the president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. It takes our sun 220 million years to orbit around the middle of our home galaxy. But that kind of timescale can be difficult to picture. So, using the International Stratigraphy Chart as a guidance for what different time periods mean in terms of millions of years, let's zoom out to the scale of a galactic year and see what happened in Earth's prehistory one cycle ago, two and so on. Ep.176 Gisela McDaniel is a diasporic, Indigenous Chamorro artist who explores the effects of trauma, displacement and colonisation through portraiture and oral histories. Interweaving audio interviews, assemblage and oil painting, she intentionally incorporates the portrait sitters' voices in order to subvert the traditional power relations of artist and sitter. Working primarily with women and non-binary people who identify as Black, Micronesian, Indigenous to Turtle Island, Asian, Latinx, and/or mixed-race, her work disrupts and responds to the systemic silencing of subjects in fine art, politics and popular culture. BY: Sarah Auger DATE: Sunday 2 October 2022 BIBLE PASSAGES: Luke (Chapter 1, verses 1-4) Psalm 119 (Verses 9-24) EXCERPT: Equality; Consent; Education for all; Science; Human Rights. They're all things we take for granted. We presume they're good things. But why? A look through History shows us that so many of our strongly-held values are not actually as universal as we might think. They come from somewhere. Like it or not, so many of them stem from the Bible – a book that has changed the world. And yet, it's a book we so easily ignore or dismiss today. But what if there's more to it than we ever realised, and it can still change our world today? Welcome: What's true of Riverside Church when we meet together in-person is still true of us online. We are on a journey together to help people get to know Jesus and grow as his followers across Birmingham and beyond. How Do We Know if What We Are Doing is Actually Serving God Or Ourselves? – Service- Day 2   Serving God needs to be more about what God is doing than what we want to do.  It's not about the selfies, it's about the kingdom.   Hey friends, welcome to the Hearing Jesus Podcast.   Do you sometimes doubt if you are truly hearing God's voice or if it's really your own? Do you wonder how you can know the difference? Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word? Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life?   Hey, I'm your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach. And I have been there. I, too, was doubting God's voice in my own life. I, too, felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do. I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn't quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was. I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me. Or that I wasn't qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do.   The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying. If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God's word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life.   Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His.   The Hearing Jesus Podcast will encourage and equip you to step into the calling God has for your life, living out your faith in the everyday. Together we will break down walls that keep us from growing spiritually. We will dig deep into our Bibles to understand and connect the Scriptures to our lives. We will boldly obey what God calls us to do, walking through doors that only He can open.   Join me for your daily dose of faith, honesty, and prayer.   Learn -> https://shehears.org Connect -> rachael@shehears.org Community-> https://www.facebook.com/groups/743928930315696/ Instagram-> https://www.instagram.com/she_hears/ Missions Support-> https://www.cotni.org/campaigns/rachael-groll     Need to chat one on one? Women often deal with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness, yet the lives of these women show that Jesus values us, wants a relationship with us, and can use us to further His kingdom. In her warm, conversational style, Rachael ties together her life experience, knowledge of the Scriptures, and her compassion for women to encourage us and enable us to become the women God has called us to be.

"How do we know what we know?" asks our guest this week, Dr. Jamie Dew, Christian philosopher and president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (nobts.edu). "This is the basic question that undergirds the discipline of epistemology. We take it for granted that we know many different things, but we rarely ask this basic question about our knowledge." That comes from Jamie's co-authored book with Mark W. Foreman, How Do We Know? An Introduction to Epistemology, 2nd Edition, (https://amzn.to/3KN2FIy).It is important for Christians to be able to answer this question, as many skeptics and atheists are increasingly utilizing it in their attempts to get Christians to doubt their faith. In this episode, Jamie outlines the basics about epistemology in relation to God, equipping us to better understand how to answer our skeptical friends and neighbors. This is part one of a three-part series on epistemology. The next two weeks will feature our interview with Christian philosopher Dr. Esther Lightcap Meek about her 2003 book, Longing to Know - The Philosophy of Knowledge for Ordinary People.Dr. Jamie Dew holds a PH.D in philosophy from the University of Birmingham (UK) and a Ph.D. in theological studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS). This episode continues to explore the question "How Do We Know?" by considering Martin Buber's "I –– Thou" knowing or encounter as a fourth way of knowledge–– relational knowledge as epistemology. In doing so it raises the importance of the question of whether we see reality as essentially a physical process or relational. It also looks at the difference between treating others as  "things" rather than "persons."

This entire first series of nine on how we know anything, then, is an exploration of epistemology from a Christian theological perspective. It critiques the epistemology of the Enlightenment, or Age of Reason, and proposes additional ways of knowing as entirely legitimate.

What are "deceitful philosophies"? The Bible exhorts us to be on guard against the empty and deceitful philosophies of men and the traditions and customs by which the world tempts and challenges us. Perhaps we can spot bad biblical doctrine, but what about counterfeit and deceitful philosophies? How does bad philosophy make inroads into our minds and become the norm? How do we know what is true? How can we test what is true? If our minds are just leftover stardust, if the universe is just a violent and chaotic place, if natural unguided forces and processes are finally what cobbled us together, then we shouldn't even trust our minds. Can we trust the secular sciences when they tell us what life is, what the cosmos means, and what we should do about our lives? Are we just stardust? Are we merely the universe come to life? Are our brains just an accidental byproduct of an impersonal nature? In order to counter the prevailing philosophies of our time, to proclaim truth, to make Christ known, we must understand and employ a Christ-centered philosophy in engaging our unbelieving neighbors. All truth belongs to God, wherever it may be found. On part 2 of our discussion with Christian philosopher Dr. Paul Gould, we unpack ways in which we can apply a Christ-centered philosophy in addressing the concerns of our time. What is truth? How do we know if what someone is telling us is true? Come along and let Dr. Gould encourage and equip you for our present sojourning through these times of uncertainty and confusion.  And remember the worlds of the Apostle Paul in the 12th chapter of Romans "I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewign of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect" (Rom. 12:12).   Additional Resources Paul Gould directs the Masters Program in Philosophy at Palm Beach Atlantic University: https://pbaschoolofministry.com/mastersphilosophyreligion/ Philosophy: A Christian Introduction, by James K. Why Do We Need Philosophy? Our guest this week and next on Apologetics Profile is Christian philosopher and author Dr. Paul Gould, who routinely gets asked this question. Dr. Gould believes that "philosophy is simply too important to give up on. Philosophy continues to play a vital role in our lives and in contemporary discussions on almost everything." And he is "not convinced that philosophy needs to be so difficult. Sure, there are a lot of philosophical issues that are difficult, but there are also a lot of issues that aren't that difficult."1 It is Dr. Gould's passion to make philosophy lucid, understandable, and Christ-centered.  Isn't philosophy just a complicated discipline for academics? What relevance does it have for my faith? For the faith of my children or grandchildren? Must we get a degree in philosophy? Isn't the Bible enough? Dr. Gould addresses these and many other important philosophical topics in a very easy-to-understand, down-to-earth conversation with Watchman staff apologist Daniel Ray. He unpacks the relevance of philosophy for everyone, especially Christians. Now more than ever, truth seems to be in short supply. Bad philosophy is making the rounds, taking people captive, causing division, doubt and confusion, as we saw in our previous two episodes on Street Epistemology. Paul helps us to rediscover that in Christ Himself "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3). We must strive to counter bad philosophy "and empty deception according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" (Col. 2:8).  Philosophy is simply a Greek word meaning "the love of wisdom" (philo-sophia). The Bible has much to say about loving and embracing wisdom (Job 28; Proverbs 8; Colossians 2; 1 Corinthians 1; John 1). Dr. Gould helps us to understand how the best sort of philosophy is centered upon the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.  So come and listen to Dr. Gould's very inspirational and practical advice about building and utilizing sound philosophy, all to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). This week on The Health Made Simple Show, Dr. Bart is joined by the food health coach, restauranteur, and former olympian Kris Buchanan! Kris shares her health journey with us, her experience on the Olympic team, and why diet has become such an essential concern for her as she purses her journey to becoming superhuman. Lastly, we cover the importance of eating organic, the dangers of GMO's, and provide a comprehensive hydration solution.   - What Does Nature Tell Us?   Kris begins by explaining her personal experience with health concerns, owning a restaurant, and why it is essential to consider what is in our food. You must begin with something you can tackle. We must start to consider that we have the opportunity to explore what is in our food instead of feeling the obligation. As we begin to eat clean, our tastebuds start to change. Once we understand the ingredients, we notice that food that is not naturally created does not taste normal!   - What Ingredients Matter? There are chemicals in our food that we have no idea is present! General meat on the market has significant hormones and GMOs. There are four levels of food: Biodynamic and regenerative food Organic food Conventional food GMO food Conventional and GMO foods have considerable amounts of pesticides and herbicides in them. They have chemicals that cause the bugs stomach to explode. This is the food that we are consuming! Artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners are relatively well known, but there are also artificial preservatives. These should all be avoided at all costs considering they are created in a lab by scientists. Consuming these chemicals and gluten can lead to many health issues from Hashimoto to Celiac. Also, it can cause your antibodies to wreak havoc on your pancreas.  Gluten no longer serves us, and there is no reason we should be consuming it.   - How Do We Prioritize Gut Health?   Begin to read the ingredients on the foods that you are consuming. Remove gluten from your diet. Change your menu and begin to consume gut-healing foods. Prioritize REAL food. You can learn more about what food to prioritize from Dr. Bart's talk on God's Garden. We must allow ourselves to have some level of accountability. We need to know where we are heading through conversations with a health professional or biannual blood tests. If we just let our health go, there is no way to avoid health issues or even have an awareness that they are developing. Dr. Bart offers comprehensive solutions for developing this awareness at the link below!   - What about Autoimmune Conditions?   Every year there are more diagnoses of autoimmune conditions.   If you are diagnosed with one condition, you will typically develop another one within three years. Within ten years of the first diagnosis, you will usually be diagnosed with FIVE autoimmune diseases.   For this reason, and many others, we need to stick to a gameplan and begin to prioritize our diet! If you have health insurance, this is typically covered by your provider. However, even if it is not, we should change our financial priorities to take care of our health.    - How Do We Know if our Food is Actually Organic?   There are a significant number of articles that bash organic food. These articles come from companies such as Bayer that make billions producing genetically modified crops and lobby to lessen organic guidelines. Private companies are the ones that certify organic foods. These are legitimate companies that can be trusted.  However, there is still organic junk food! That is why it is so essential to flip over the product and read the ingredient list. If you ever come across a product that claims to be regenerative or is certified as biodynamic, this is the gold standard. This means farmers are regenerating the soil and ensuring the food you receive is of the highest quality. It is not about the grocery store. It is about the brand. Do your research on the brands and begin considering what you are putting in your body!   - Which Foods Need to be Organic?   The most important foods to keep organic are animal meats and products. This can be seen as chicken, beef, eggs, etc.  Following this, you should prioritize that all of your vegetables are organic, and lastly, you should purchase all organic fruits. However, this does not mean that it is unimportant to be consuming solely organic foods. This is simply for those who are beginning the transition.   Not only is organic produce better for your body, but they also taste so much better!!   Your body has been created to detox. If you begin to put in nature's best, your body will naturally detox these unhealthy chemicals.   -  What About Cosmetics?   Your skin is your largest organ, so you should treat it as such! The ingredients in cosmetics are often detrimental to our health, so we should not just eat organic, but apply organic.    - What Solutions Can We Use?   An excellent hydration product that can be used has been created by our guest Kris! This product is organic and provides both great taste and significant electrolytes to improve hydration. This product is shipped throughout the United States.   Hydration is an essential practice that improves our lives and can even reduce issues such as asthma.   This can be found by clicking this link.   - Making Health Simple   Change the water you drink to natural spring water. If you are consuming bottled water, make sure that it is never distilled or purified. Even when traveling, you can find natural spring water in almost every grocery or convenience store.   - What's Next? March 15, 2020 The first epistle of the apostle John was written to help the coming generations to remain faithful and feel assured in the gospel. John wants every Christian to know, and that is a keyword throughout the book, without any doubt that they have hope of eternal life with God. Purpose Statements John also explains his letter in a few different ways. Chapter 1:4 says he is writing this, "That our joy may be complete." In 2:1, he says, "I am writing these things so that you may not sin." Then, 2:26 speaks to a specific section (2:18-23) and says, "I have written these things to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you." The final statement is the main point of the letter. 1 John 5:13 (ESV) --- 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. When we put this all together, we understand John's desire. The overall desire of John is to ensure that his readers enjoy the blessing of eternal life. They get there by escaping sin and those who might deceive them. This will make John's joy complete. How Do We Know? (1:1-4) How can we have the assurance of eternal life? What does John tell us that helps us know for sure? In the introduction, John starts with an explanation. 1 John 1:1--4 (ESV) --- 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life--- 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us--- 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. Notice how he begins the letter. He talks about the word of life as though it is a person. This sounds a lot like the gospel John also wrote, "The word became flesh and dwelt among us." Jesus is the word of God made manifest. He is the complete revelation of who God the Father is. John says that he is an eyewitness of this. He has proclaimed this to his readers so that they can be in fellowship with one another, with God the Father, and with his Son. This is a fantastic statement. The revelation of God through Jesus has made it to where we can have fellowship with God. To have the assurance of eternal life, we must have fellowship with God. This is where we get the idea that salvation is about a relationship, not rule-keeping. This gives us a hint of what this letter will be about from the beginning. As John is proclaiming the word of life, which is another name for Jesus, he is proclaiming eternal life. Fellowship with God, Jesus, and all of God's children will result in eternal life. This is John's focus throughout this letter, and it must be our focus as well. We want to make sure that we are in fellowship with God, Jesus, and all of God's children. If we lose fellowship with God, we lose everything. So this is a letter that will help us understand what fellowship with God looks like. Fellowship With God (2:5-5:12) It is hard for us to find a flow in this letter unless we understand this purpose. But, when we understand this purpose, everything else falls into place. Look at the next section with this in mind. 1 John 1:5--2:6 (ESV) --- 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. Now, I could preach multiple sermons out of this section, but I want us to understand John's methodology as we look at this section. This section teaches us what John will do throughout this letter. Notice verse 5 talks about two contrasting ideas, light and darkness. He says, "God is light and in him is no darkness at all." We are either in the light (in fellowship with God), or we are in the darkness (in fellowship with the world). This letter will take this metaphor and blow it up. He will alternate back and forth between what people who are in the light do and what people who are in darkness do. ##. Living In Darkness 1 John 1:6 (ESV) --- 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 1 John 1:8 (ESV) --- 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:10 (ESV) --- 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 2:4 (ESV) --- 4 Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, Living In The Light 1 John 1:7 (ESV) --- 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:9 (ESV) --- 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 2:3 (ESV) --- 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John 2:5 (ESV) --- 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: Other Contrasts When we understand what John is doing in this section, the rest of the book becomes much easier to digest because he does the same thing in the remaining chapters. In 2:7-11, he contrasts those who are keeping the "old command" with those who are refusing to keep it. In 2:12-27, he contrasts those who have the truth inside of them with those who are letting others deceive them. In 2:28-3:12, he contrasts those who do what is righteous and those who do what is evil and hate/murder their brother. In 3:13-24, he contrasts those who love their brothers and sisters and those who love the world. In 4:1-6, he contrasts those who confess Jesus as being from God and those who do not. In 4:7-5:4, he contrasts those who are assured of their salvation and those who are ought to be afraid. Then, 5:5-12 contrasts those who believe God's testimony about Jesus at his baptism and crucifixion with those who refuse to believe God's testimony. There is a crescendo in thought throughout the body of this letter. His contrasts become more powerful and meaningful, but they are all building on similar ideas that match his primary purpose of giving the children of God assurance that they have fellowship with God and hope of eternal life. How Do We Have Fellowship With God? This is an essential blueprint for understanding the book of 1 John, but I haven't really discussed the applicable teachings in the book. To combat the false teachings and give his readers reassurance and hope, John tells them what they must do. I want to summarize all that he tells us to do quickly. I want you to see each of these for your own assurance. 1. Keep The Commands The first applicable point we see is the requirement to keep the commandments of the Lord. Anyone who says you don't have to follow the commandments of God or who is living a life of rebellion is not a child of God. Children of God have fellowship with God by keeping the commands of God. This defiance is not tolerated. We might ask, "Which commands?" John specifies, "The old command which you heard from the beginning," but also a new command (2:7-8). This is talking about God's original commandments to "love God with all of our hearts, soul, mind, and strength" and to "love our neighbor as our selves." They have been made new through the revelation of Jesus. Now we pursue keeping these laws with a greater understanding of what God desires from us because Jesus shows us the way. We also have hope to motivate us. 1 John 2:6 (ESV) --- 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 2. Reject Sin The way John talks about sin and the children of God is significant. In one letter he says, "If we say, 'We have not sinned,' we make him a liar, and his word is not in us" (1:10) and, "Everyone who remains in him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen him or known him" (3:6). He also has many similar statements like, "The one who commits sin is of the devil," and, "Everyone who is born of God does not sin." Aren't these confusing to us? Should we confess that we have sinned and never sin again? If we do sin, should we be terrified that we are no longer a child of God? The point of these phrases is to clarify that those who are God's children must not continually practice sin. They are not like the world. If we are completely wrapped up in sin, and we can't get out of it, we should be terrified because there is no darkness in God at all. We were supposed to pass from death to life. Notice Chapter 2:1 again. 1 John 2:1 (ESV) --- 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. Our goal is to stop sinning. If anyone here has a purpose that is different from that, you are lost. Those who are in fellowship with God love God and hate sin. 1 John 3:2--3 (ESV) --- 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 3. Reject Antichrists The third lesson that we learn from 1 John is that there will be pretenders who walk in darkness. These men and women will stand against the basic principles of fellowship with God. They will lead people into fellowship with the world instead of fellowship with God. John calls them "antichrists." Many movies have been made, and many people have speculated about some antichrist coming and fighting with God. But really, this is a word that is used to describe anyone who promotes loving the world, denying that Jesus is the Christ, denying that Jesus is God, straying from the apostles' teachings (commands of God), and teaching others to hate their brother (Continue in sin). He warns God's children to test the spirits before believing them. 1 John 4:1 (ESV) --- 1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:5--6 (ESV) --- 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. John encourages us to test whether these men are listening to the words of the apostles and speaking the same things, or just saying what the world wants to hear. This is a warning for us as we see a lot of teachers out there today. We are exposed to people from all kinds of religious affiliations speaking things that are not scriptural. Do we know the Bible well enough to determine what is from God and what is against the will of God? Could you tell if I am opposing the commandments of God? This book is supposed to help you with that. The Main Contrast: Believing False Teachers I get the feeling, and most of the commentaries I refer to agree that John is combatting many false teachers as he writes this. John's mission in writing this book is to prepare God's people for these false teachers by telling them the difference between what is false and what is true. So, throughout this book, he will describe the things that false teachers do. If you were to underline all that John says about those who are false, you will see the progression I spoke about. Then, if you go back and circle everything John says we know is true, you will see the contrast. John uses the word "know" twenty-six times in this book. What does that tell you about fellowship with God? Knowing Truth Those who have fellowship with God know him. They know his commands (1:3). They know the truth (2:20-21). They know God's plan to make them like Jesus (3:2). They know that they have passed from death to life (3:13) because they know love (3:16) and they know the spirit of God (4:2). They know that God is love (4:8) and they know that they are in fellowship with God (4:13) because they know and believe the love that God has love for them (4:15). They also know that they are in fellowship with God because they love God's children and are in fellowship with them (5:2). So they know that they have eternal life (5:13). They know that fellowship with God means that they can ask God and that he hears them and wants to give them what they need (5:15). To wrap up the "know" discussion, look at the last words of John in this letter. 1 John 5:18--20 (ESV) --- 18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Keep Yourselves From Idols 1 John 5:21 (ESV) --- 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. The last verse makes sense if this whole book is about having fellowship with God. The last thing we want to do is be led astray from our relationship by pursuing idols. We know God, how could we worship and serve those who give us no real benefit. How could we trust in anything this world has to offer for joy and satisfaction when we have a relationship with God. Conclusion Our teaching, "Speak where the Bible speaks, and be silent where it is silent," is in line with this, but we must continually evaluate what we do to make sure that we aren't silent where the Bible speaks or speaking where the Bible is silent. That has the potential to get us out of fellowship with God. What does the Bible say? Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. These are the greatest commands. Everything else that we do must be rooted and grounded in these. We are to live like Christ, his apostles, and the church lived in the first century. We want the same heart and the same love.

The notes for this episode aren't exactly show notes. For more reasons to believe, please check out my book Easter: Fact or Fiction, 20 Reasons to Believe that Jesus Rose from the Dead (click here) OR: Check this post out on my writing blog: Top Ten Reasons to Believe Jesus Rose from the Dead. Recap: 1 Corinthians 15:  12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say, “There is no resurrection of the dead”? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is without foundation, and so is your faith. But, as Paul goes on to tell us in 1 Corinthians 15, the Resurrection of Jesus DID, in FACT, Happen!  1 Corinthians 15:20-22 20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also comes through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. Let's look at another passage on RAMIFICATIONS OF THE RESURRECTION. RAMIFICATIONS - ONE OF MY FAVORITE WORDS. It means - a consequence of an action or event Romans 6:3 Are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life.5 For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of His resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin's dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed from sin's claims. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him, 9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him. Reasons to Believe: Apologetics is one of my favorite fields of Theology. When I first heard the term, I assumed Apologetics had something to do with apologizing for our faith - like, being all nice about it. “I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but apart from Jesus, you will die and go to hell….I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, and I'm sorry if that offends you.”  I also thought that Silicon Valley, when I was a teenager, was a valley with a lot of sand in it. I sort of new that silicon could be refined out of sand, so I assumed Silicon Valley was the place where they got the sand to make the computer chips and all of the computer companies just built up around that sandy valley.  I was pretty good at assuming when I was younger. However, apologetics does not have anything to do with apologizing, and everybody with half a brain knows that Silicon is not merely sand, but a tetravalent metalloid used in the production of silicon, and that Silicon Valley is more of a euphemism than an actual place valley filled with sand. SO - what is Apologetics?  We get that word from 1 Peter 3:15 Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. 16 However, do this with gentleness and respect, keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are accused, those who denounce your Christian life will be put to shame. The Greek there for the word ‘defense' is: Apologian, and it means to defend OR to Answer. Literally it means to Answer from Words, or answer with Words. What Peter is saying is that we Christians MUST - it is a command - Be Ready to DEFEND/ANSWER our Beliefs with Words. (Eat that, Francis of Assisi...who never actually said “Preach the Gospel, if Necessary, use words.”)  Apologetics is the field of Christian Endeavor that is focused on following the Biblical Command in 1 Peter 3:15 - HOW DO WE GIVE AN ANSWER FOR BELIEVING THE GOSPEL - and the CENTRAL CLAIM OF THE GOSPEL, THE RESURRECTION.  Think of it this way - Apologetics is like the crowbar that opens the door, and The Gospel is like the Grenade that you toss in. The Gospel is the thing with the POWER OF GOD IN IT.  (Romans 1:16 “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes”) I thought of that illustration this week, and was immediately kind of excited, almost proud of it, but then I realized, it is kind of violent and boyish. Let me try again:  Apologetics is like the wind that blows away the fog, so you can see an incredible view. The view is the powerful, breathtaking thing, but the wind helps to open eyes to the view. Apologetics - Answering/Defending our faith - is like the flavoring and sweetness in the medicine. The flavoring/sweetness doesn't actually heal you, but it does make people more willing/eager to open their mouths and take in the medicine. A spoonful of apologetics makes the Gospel go down? Not quite - It is the Spirit that makes the heart receptive to the Gospel - but Apologetics has been ordained by God to help open eyes. PROVING something that happened historically is quite difficult, depending on what you mean by ‘proof.'  We don't have video of the Battle of Camden, for instance, and maybe not many of you have heard of it. It was the bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, if you were rooting for America during the Revolution - WE LOST BADLY in this battle. It took place in 1780 just north of Camden, South Carolina. 2000 Brits against 4000 Americans commanded by Horatio Gates. According to American Officer Otho Holland Williams, referring to the British charge, "the impetuosity with which they advanced, firing and huzzaing, threw the whole body of militia into such a panic that they generally threw down their loaded arms and fled in the utmost consternation. The unworthy example of the Virginians was almost instantly followed by the North Carolinians.” Takeaway - one way to win a battle old school is to do a lot of huzzaing!  Furthermore, in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, then governor of Virginia, "picture it as bad as you possibly can and it will not be as bad as it really is.” HOW DO WE KNOW, KNOW, KNOW this happened? Well - we don't have video, or pictures, or surviving witnesses. But virtually no historian alive doubts the major facets of the above narrative about the battle. How do we know it happened?  Reliable Eyewitness testimony in writing.  We see the historical impact of the battle.  So, how can we KNOW, KNOW, KNOW that something so important - and incredible - like Jesus' claimed resurrection FACTUALLY and HISTORICALLY Happened? Well, I think there is several ways to know, and please note that I am not merely saying the way we know is because the Bible says so.  Don't get me wrong, I believe the Bible, but I am thinking of our skeptical friends. That might not be enough for them - so we want to use apologetics to open the door, so we can get the Good News and the truth of the Bible in. Last Week - Appearance of Jesus Argument. By most testimonies, including Isaiah 53:2, Jesus' physical appearance was quite unimpressive. Not tall and imposing, possible monobrow/hooked nose, not handsome or striking. And yet, scientifically and verifiably, Jesus is the most famous person to ever live. HOW COULD THIS BE? I argue that the resurrection of Jesus is the most plausible argument to explain the undoubtable fame of Jesus. Two More Reasons to Believe This Week:  Female Witnesses: Luke 24: 9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened. Why is this a big deal? Misnah, one of the Rabbis found within testifies that, due to their menstrual issues, “women are not competent witnesses to be relied on…they are not halakhically admissible as reliable witnesses….JOSEPHUS: “But let not a single witness be credited; but three, or two at the least, and those such whose testimony is confirmed by their good lives. But let not the testimony of women be admitted, on account of the levity and boldness of their sex, nor let servants be admitted to give testimony on account of the ignobility of their soul; since it is probable that they may not speak truth”  – Jewish/Roman historian Josephus, pointing out the belief that women of his day should not testify in court “In dealing with a crowd of women at least, or with any promiscuous mob, a philosopher cannot influence them by reason or exhort them to reverence, piety and faith; nay, there is need of religious fear also, and this cannot be aroused without myths and marvels”[2]   – Strabo, a first century philosopher sharing a quite common view of women at the time: that they were immune to reason and comparable to a “promiscuous mob.”Women, in the first century, were NOT viewed as reliable witnesses, and yet, they are the FIRST witnesses to the MOST CENTRAL and CRUCIAL claim of Christianity. Far from undermining the Central Claim of Christianity - That Jesus Rose from the Dead - I believe this ENHANCES it. In a sexist environment like the first century, why have women as your witnesses unless it actually happened that way?? IF the disciples fabricated the story, why do it this way? If the story was legendary, WHY HAVE THE WOMEN AS THE FIRST WITNESSES?!!? 2. The Stigma of Crucifixion.  Can you think of a single person ever crucified other than Jesus? Perhaps Peter was, but we tend to think Crucifixion was rare in the first century. BUT IT WAS NOT! It was extremely common. Probably hundreds of thousands of people were crucified, and it was a horrible, ignominious way to die. Seneca the younger, a Roman statesman who lived during the time of Jesus, described crucifixion this way:  “I see before me crosses not all alike, but differently made by different peoples: some hang a man head downwards, some force a stick upwards through his groin, some stretch out his arms on a forked gibbet. I see cords, scourges, and instruments of torture for each limb and each joint” There would likely be a large and very upsetting amount of blood spilling from Jesus. The crown of thorns, with one inch or more protrusions, would make deep holes in an area that is absolutely filled with blood vessels. His back would be bleeding profusely from the lashing with the cat of nine tails. The nail wounds on Jesus' wrists and feet would also be bleeding, as first century nails would not be quite as sharp and clean-edged as the nails we have now. And, as noted by Seneca above, it is conceivable that Jesus was stuck through with sticks. All of this blood would be highly upsetting to behold and also incredibly obvious and visible, because the majority of the time the Romans crucified their victims without any clothing whatsoever. Think of the embarrassment and agony of that situation: bleeding profusely, wracked with muscle cramps and pain beyond the ability of the toughest person to endure, having to push up on strained and shredded muscles to just simply get a single breath…and doing it all NAKED. How utterly astounding that the king of the universe would stoop so low. THE DISCIPLES SAW ALL OF THIS!!! WOULD THEY WORSHIP SOMEBODY WHO BARELY SURVIVED IT?  Consider also Willie Francis. Whom, you might ask? One of the first things you will note about Willie Francis is that millions of people don't worship him, and yet he shares a few things in common with Jesus. Willie was convicted of murder in Louisiana in 1945 for an act that he allegedly committed when he was 15. Despite the fact that he was underage; despite the fact that he was not tried by a jury of his peers (his jury was all white); despite the fact that most of the physical evidence against Willie disappeared; and despite the fact that the gun used to kill the victim actually belonged to a deputy sheriff that had threatened to kill the victim in the past – despite all of those things, Willie Francis was convicted and electrocuted in May of 1946. Only, he didn't die. Francis was one of the few people that have ever survived a round with the electric chair, and he did so due to a drunk guard setting things up improperly. Sadly, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it wasn't cruel and unusual to re-execute a teenager, and Francis was re-executed in May of 1947. I have studied the historical records of 1946 to see if there arose a religion around Willie Francis...but found NOTHING. WHY WOULD I?  Well - he survived execution, right? That's What Jesus did?! The idea of worshipping Willie Francis is absurd, despite the fact that he was unjustly and brutally killed. We can cry for his death, but nobody has the instinct to worship an executed man, even one who survived?  IT WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST AS RIDICULOUS TO HAVE WORSHIPPED JESUS IN THE FIRST CENTURY IF ALL HE DID WAS MERELY SURVIVE, BARELY, THE CROSS. It is incredibly strange to worship the survivor of an execution and torture. UNLESS THAT PERSON ROSE FROM THE DEAD AND PROMISED ETERNAL LIFE TO ALL WHO BELIEVED IN HIM. ONCE AGAIN, THE RESURRECTION BEST FITS THE FACTS OF HISTORY!  1 Corinthians? Now brothers, I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you; you received it and have taken your stand on it. 2 You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message I proclaimed to you—unless you believed for no purpose. 3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time;

(Eat that, Francis of Assisi...who never actually said “Preach the Gospel, if Necessary, use words.”)  Apologetics is the field of Christian Endeavor that is focused on following the Biblical Command in 1 Peter 3:15 - HOW DO WE GIVE AN ANSWER FOR BELIEVING THE GOSPEL - and the CENTRAL CLAIM OF THE GOSPEL, THE RESURRECTION.  Think of it this way - Apologetics is like the crowbar that opens the door, and The Gospel is like the Grenade that you toss in. The Gospel is the thing with the POWER OF GOD IN IT.  (Romans 1:16 “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes”) I thought of that illustration this week, and was immediately kind of excited, almost proud of it, but then I realized, it is kind of violent and boyish. Let me try again:  Apologetics is like the wind that blows away the fog, so you can see an incredible view. The view is the powerful, breathtaking thing, but the wind helps to open eyes to the view. Apologetics - Answering/Defending our faith - is like the flavoring and sweetness in the medicine. The flavoring/sweetness doesn't actually heal you, but it does make people more willing/eager to open their mouths and take in the medicine. A spoonful of apologetics makes the Gospel go down? Not quite - It is the Spirit that makes the heart receptive to the Gospel - but Apologetics has been ordained by God to help open eyes. PROVING something that happened historically is quite difficult, depending on what you mean by ‘proof.'  We don't have video of the Battle of Camden, for instance, and maybe not many of you have heard of it. It was the bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, if you were rooting for America during the Revolution - WE LOST BADLY in this battle. It took place in 1780 just north of Camden, South Carolina. 2000 Brits against 4000 Americans commanded by Horatio Gates. According to American Officer Otho Holland Williams, referring to the British charge, "the impetuosity with which they advanced, firing and huzzaing, threw the whole body of militia into such a panic that they generally threw down their loaded arms and fled in the utmost consternation. The unworthy example of the Virginians was almost instantly followed by the North Carolinians.” Takeaway - one way to win a battle old school is to do a lot of huzzaing!  Furthermore, in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, then governor of Virginia, "picture it as bad as you possibly can and it will not be as bad as it really is.” HOW DO WE KNOW, KNOW, KNOW this happened? Well - we don't have video, or pictures, or surviving witnesses. But virtually no historian alive doubts the major facets of the above narrative about the battle. How do we know it happened?  Reliable Eyewitness testimony in writing.  We see the historical impact of the battle.  So, how can we KNOW, KNOW, KNOW that something so important - and incredible - like Jesus' claimed resurrection FACTUALLY and HISTORICALLY Happened? Well, I think there is several ways to know, and please note that I am not merely saying the way we know is because the Bible says so.  Don't get me wrong, I believe the Bible, but I am thinking of our skeptical friends. That might not be enough for them - so we want to use apologetics to open the door, so we can get the Good News and the truth of the Bible in. Last Week - Appearance of Jesus Argument. By most testimonies, including Isaiah 53:2, Jesus' physical appearance was quite unimpressive. Not tall and imposing, possible monobrow/hooked nose, not handsome or striking. And yet, scientifically and verifiably, Jesus is the most famous person to ever live. HOW COULD THIS BE? I argue that the resurrection of Jesus is the most plausible argument to explain the undoubtable fame of Jesus. Two More Reasons to Believe This Week:  Female Witnesses: Luke 24: 9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened. Why is this a big deal? Misnah, one of the Rabbis found within testifies that, due to their menstrual issues, “women are not competent witnesses to be relied on…they are not halakhically admissible as reliable witnesses….JOSEPHUS: “But let not a single witness be credited; but three, or two at the least, and those such whose testimony is confirmed by their good lives. But let not the testimony of women be admitted, on account of the levity and boldness of their sex, nor let servants be admitted to give testimony on account of the ignobility of their soul; since it is probable that they may not speak truth”  – Jewish/Roman historian Josephus, pointing out the belief that women of his day should not testify in court “In dealing with a crowd of women at least, or with any promiscuous mob, a philosopher cannot influence them by reason or exhort them to reverence, piety and faith; nay, there is need of religious fear also, and this cannot be aroused without myths and marvels”[2]   – Strabo, a first century philosopher sharing a quite common view of women at the time: that they were immune to reason and comparable to a “promiscuous mob.”Women, in the first century, were NOT viewed as reliable witnesses, and yet, they are the FIRST witnesses to the MOST CENTRAL and CRUCIAL claim of Christianity. Far from undermining the Central Claim of Christianity - That Jesus Rose from the Dead - I believe this ENHANCES it. In a sexist environment like the first century, why have women as your witnesses unless it actually happened that way?? IF the disciples fabricated the story, why do it this way? If the story was legendary, WHY HAVE THE WOMEN AS THE FIRST WITNESSES?!!? 2. The Stigma of Crucifixion.  Can you think of a single person ever crucified other than Jesus? Perhaps Peter was, but we tend to think Crucifixion was rare in the first century. BUT IT WAS NOT! It was extremely common. Probably hundreds of thousands of people were crucified, and it was a horrible, ignominious way to die. Seneca the younger, a Roman statesman who lived during the time of Jesus, described crucifixion this way:  “I see before me crosses not all alike, but differently made by different peoples: some hang a man head downwards, some force a stick upwards through his groin, some stretch out his arms on a forked gibbet. I see cords, scourges, and instruments of torture for each limb and each joint” There would likely be a large and very upsetting amount of blood spilling from Jesus. The crown of thorns, with one inch or more protrusions, would make deep holes in an area that is absolutely filled with blood vessels. His back would be bleeding profusely from the lashing with the cat of nine tails. The nail wounds on Jesus' wrists and feet would also be bleeding, as first century nails would not be quite as sharp and clean-edged as the nails we have now. And, as noted by Seneca above, it is conceivable that Jesus was stuck through with sticks. All of this blood would be highly upsetting to behold and also incredibly obvious and visible, because the majority of the time the Romans crucified their victims without any clothing whatsoever. Think of the embarrassment and agony of that situation: bleeding profusely, wracked with muscle cramps and pain beyond the ability of the toughest person to endure, having to push up on strained and shredded muscles to just simply get a single breath…and doing it all NAKED. How utterly astounding that the king of the universe would stoop so low. THE DISCIPLES SAW ALL OF THIS!!! WOULD THEY WORSHIP SOMEBODY WHO BARELY SURVIVED IT?  Consider also Willie Francis. Whom, you might ask? One of the first things you will note about Willie Francis is that millions of people don't worship him, and yet he shares a few things in common with Jesus. Willie was convicted of murder in Louisiana in 1945 for an act that he allegedly committed when he was 15. Despite the fact that he was underage; despite the fact that he was not tried by a jury of his peers (his jury was all white); despite the fact that most of the physical evidence against Willie disappeared; and despite the fact that the gun used to kill the victim actually belonged to a deputy sheriff that had threatened to kill the victim in the past – despite all of those things, Willie Francis was convicted and electrocuted in May of 1946. Only, he didn't die. Francis was one of the few people that have ever survived a round with the electric chair, and he did so due to a drunk guard setting things up improperly. Sadly, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it wasn't cruel and unusual to re-execute a teenager, and Francis was re-executed in May of 1947. I have studied the historical records of 1946 to see if there arose a religion around Willie Francis...but found NOTHING. WHY WOULD I?  Well - he survived execution, right? That's What Jesus did?! The idea of worshipping Willie Francis is absurd, despite the fact that he was unjustly and brutally killed. We can cry for his death, but nobody has the instinct to worship an executed man, even one who survived?  IT WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST AS RIDICULOUS TO HAVE WORSHIPPED JESUS IN THE FIRST CENTURY IF ALL HE DID WAS MERELY SURVIVE, BARELY, THE CROSS. It is incredibly strange to worship the survivor of an execution and torture. UNLESS THAT PERSON ROSE FROM THE DEAD AND PROMISED ETERNAL LIFE TO ALL WHO BELIEVED IN HIM. ONCE AGAIN, THE RESURRECTION BEST FITS THE FACTS OF HISTORY!  1 Corinthians? Now brothers, I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you; you received it and have taken your stand on it. 2 You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message I proclaimed to you—unless you believed for no purpose. 3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time;

Resilience is a theme for this month and today we are looking at what Emotional Resilience is. In my newsletter I share some information about me that will explain why I've chosen to focus on resilience.  You can sign up HERE. I want to share with you what I've done to keep going when challenges come our way or we have tough times.  How do we keep going and be resilient? What is Emotional Resilience? It's about our ability to deal with situations in life, how easily we can bounce back.  Clients come to me when they've "had it up to here" or "can't take any more".  That means your emotional levels are full up.  I talk about an emotional bucket and how stress, anxiety, pressure can build up.  They can come from self-doubt, shame, embarrassment too.  It might be about the way we are treated or how we talk to ourselves. It can affect our ability to cope.  I explain how this can affect me personally on the podcast. This bucket of negativity can sometimes fill up quickly or take quite a while.  The speed at which your bucket fills up, is not the issue, my concern is how full it is,  and what we can do about it. We need to be able to balance our emotions with both positive and negative feelings and circumstances. How Do We Know if Our Emotional Bucket is Full? It's much more than overwhelm.  When your bucket is full, we feel it all the time.  Or, it can take a tiny thing to tip us over the edge.  Anger bursts out.  Tears overflow. If you often feel worried or nervous, frustrated, sad, irritable, angry, scared, upset, overwhelmed, inadequate or even wanting to escape, then it’s likely that your emotional bucket is overflowing. What's a Good Balance? If your bucket is too empty, then that’s not going to be great either.  If this is the case then you might feel low, fed up, tired all the time, bored, negative, nervous, anxious or even depressed.  An empty bucket can also drain those around you too. (sorry for all the doom and gloom - things can get better - honest!!) We need our buckets to be somewhere in the middle, just right.  That way we can be happier, more comfortable about ourselves, staff, colleagues, clients.  We can think more clearly, make better decisions and generally enjoy life more. What Helps to Maintain Emotional Resilience? We need to make sure we've got enough good things going on in our lives to be able have the balance.  To have positive times and situations, opportunities that are fun and good for us.  Also to have tools in our toolkit that we can use to reset the balance of those emotions. 11.0m  I talk about one particular thing that really makes me smile! Spend some time over the course of a week, noticing what lifts you up, brightens your day.  What small things are in your life that help you feel good.  What drags you down and adds to negativity?  Notice those. Then come back over the next few weeks and listen to future episodes where I dive deeper and give more information on resilience and tools you can use to develop your emotional resilience. If you want to talk about working with me to help this, then book a call or look at how to work with me.   If you'd like some live coaching or to ask a question that you'd like to be mentioned on the blog or podcast, drop me a question HERE.
