Aviation around the world changed as a result of the fatal accident involving Air Canada Flight 797. The investigation led to massive changes to the materials inside the cabins of commercial aircraft.On June 2, 1983, the DC9-32 on a routine flight from Dallas to Toronto had an inflight smoke event that led to an emergency landing in Cincinnati. As the passengers and crew began evacuating the aircraft, a flash fire in the cabin created heat and toxic smoke that killed 23 of the 46 occupants.The NTSB investigation revealed that the fire caused the release of dangerous levels of toxic chemicals and gases from the materials used inside the cabin. This finding led to a systematic transition to new fire-blocking materials. John Goglia shares his role in replacing materials on aircraft he maintained.This accident also led to the requirement for smoke detectors in lavatories. In The Lav of a DC9 With Donald Trump When Donald Trump bought the old Eastern Airlines Shuttle, that had served Boston and Washington with hourly flights, he came to LaGuardia Airport to launch the newly branded Trump Shuttle, in the form of an old DC9 that waited quietly outside at the gate bound for Washington. The Donald stood at the check-in gate greeting the press. I was there as the Trump Shuttle flak came to my office at Air Cargo News FlyingTypers in the Marine Air Terminal and asked me to attend the event. "Look I need numbers, maybe we could comp you to stay a few days on us at The Trump Taj Mahal AC in Atlantic City that he owns!" I said we don't gamble but took sympathy and jumped aboard the airport bus to the main terminal. Something good for LGA and New York City was the larger calling during those days.

I taxi scaricano passeggeri con valigie e pacchi. Sembrano non avere fretta alcuna. L'orario di partenza previsto del DC9 IH 870 dell'Itavia per la tratta Bologna-Palermo è fissato alle 18:15. Chi legge un giornale, chi si guarda intorno, chi si reca al duty free. Un profumo, una stecca di sigarette, l'ultimo settimanale, il libro, il quotidiano che non si è potuto leggere al mattino. Ottantuno persone, sessantatré adulti, tredici bambini, due piloti, due assistenti di volo. Quelle persone non sono mai arrivati a destinazione all'aeroporto di Palermo.  Si indaga sulla pista francese A distanza di 44 anni si conoscono molti retroscena dell'abbattimento del DC9 IH 870 dell'Itavia. Una verità racchiusa in cinquemila pagine nella sentenza ordinanza del giudice romano Rosario Priore. Il 27 giugno 1980 nel mar Tirreno meridionale, nel tratto compreso tra le isole italiane di Ponza e Ustica, esplose in volo e precipitò in mare l'IH870 della compagnia aerea Itavia. Il velivolo, decollato dall'aeroporto di Bologna-Guglielmo Marconi, era diretto all'aeroporto di Palermo-Punta Raisi.

Dice che la tesi del missile è smentita dagli esperti, tanto quanto quella di una bomba a bordo. Da fonte Nato quella sera sui cieli di Ustica risultano in volo 21 aerei militari, italiani, americani, inglesi, forse francesi. L'impresa di accertare chi abbia sparato è improba. Secondo Claudio Martelli, lo scenario più attendibile è che il Dc9 non sia stato colpito direttamente, ma danneggiato dai vortici causati dalle manovre dei caccia. Nella sostanza Claudio Martelli rilancia la tesi della "quasi collisione" proposta dal professor Carlo Casarosa secondo cui gli aerei libici che la sera del 27 giugno 1980 volavano nello spazio aereo italiano venivano coperti dalla nostra Aeronautica, che utilizzava gli aerei di linea come scudo visivo, affinché i libici risultassero invisibili ai radar. Martelli offre solo delle supposizioni, non da certezze, ma indica una strada plausibile per la ricerca di una verità. Cercare tra le carte classificate e secretate del Dipartimento di Stato, di Fbi, della Cia, dell'intelligence americana. Quelle carte che i nostri Governi non hanno mai chiesto con vigore, e che gli Stati Uniti, come la Francia, hanno tenute chiuse a chiave negli archivi. A cura di Daniele Biacchessi La sera del 27 giugno 1980, il Dc9 della compagnia Itavia parte dall'aeroporto Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna con il suo carico di 77 passeggeri e quattro componenti dell'equipaggio, ma allo scalo di Palermo Punta Raisi non atterrerà mai. Viene abbattuto da un missile in volo, durante una esercitazione che impegna numerose forze aeree nel Mediterraneo. I successivi gravissimi depistaggi da parte dei vertici dell'aeronautica, dei servizi segreti di varie nazioni tra cui l'Italia, gli Stati Uniti e la Francia, la manomissione e sottrazione di corpi di reato come la parte del libro del Centro operativo di Ciampino e le registrazioni radar ripulite dagli archivi dei servizi per ordine del piduista Santovito, capo del Sismi, le morti misteriose collegate alla strage di Ustica, dimostrano contro ogni ragionevole dubbio che la nostra coscienza nazionale è sprofondata negli abissi del Mar Tirreno. Questa è la verità provata dalle carte giudiziarie, e questo lo avevo scritto ventun anni fa in un libro "Punto Condor", scritto con il collega Fabrizio Colarieti, quando decidemmo di mettere in piedi un sito(stragi80.it), che potesse raccogliere tutto il materiale cartaceo, digitale, multimediale su Ustica. E' quello che ha per lunghi anni sostenuto il compianto amico Andrea Purgatori. Ed è anche quello che ha dichiarato pochi giorni fa Giuliano Amato, ex presidente del Consiglio che ha parlato di una responsabilità francese, confermando le dichiarazioni dell'ex presidente del Consiglio e Capo dello Stato Francesco Cossiga. Oggi tutti rivelano squarci di verità. Si ricorda qualcosa oggi il ministro della Difesa Salvo Andò che chiese la verità su Ustica al presidente francese Francois Mitterand senza ottenere risposte. Ma oggi non servono squarci di verità. Ora c'è bisogno di una verità completa. Lo dobbiamo alle vittime e ai loro familiari. L'ex premier Giuliano Amato lancia un'accusa pesante: il Dc9 dell'Itavia precipitato vicino a Ustica il 27 giugno 1980 è stato abbattuto da un missile francese. In un'intervista Amato spiega che "Era scattato un piano per colpire l'aereo sul quale volava Gheddafi, ma il leader libico sfuggì alla trappola perché avvertito da Craxi".

In un'intervista a Repubblica Giuliano Amato parla della tragedia di Ustica e punta il dito contro i francesi. Mentre si aspetta di vedere cosa uscirà nell'inchiesta bis sulla strage condotta dalla Procura di Roma, l'ex premier dichiara che il Dc9 dell'Itavia precipitato vicino a Ustica il 27 giugno 1980 è stato abbattuto da un missile francese.

L'aggettivo “esemplare” richiede un'enorme responsabilità nel scriverlo. Andrea Purgatori è stato un giornalista esemplare perché è l'esempio di un giornalismo in disuso in questo Paese. Nella schiera degli accomodanti che amplificano le tesi del potere Purgatori ha rispettato la massima di Mark Twain: non temere ciò che non conosciamo ma temere ciò che crediamo vero e invece non lo è. Nell'Italia del “cedimento strutturale” del DC9 su Ustica il 21 aprile 1984 sul Corriere della Sera Purgatori scriveva senza remore delle tracce di tritolo sui resti del velivolo. Non era una notizia facile perché squassava la verità confezionata che avrebbe facilmente chiuso il caso e evitato imbarazzi. Ma il giornalista Purgatori non si è accontentato dello scoop. La verità su Ustica l'ha inseguita, perfezionata, arrotondata in tutta la sua vita professionale, con la pazienza ogni volta di riannodare i fili della storia per renderla comprensibile a tutti. Andrea Purgatori era anche attendibile, nonostante i prevedibili attacchi di chi era danneggiato dalle sue inchieste. La credibilità mantenuta integra pur scrivendo ciò che infastidisce il potere è l'esempio di Andrea Purgatori. E in un giorno in cui si commemora Borsellino cancellando condanne, fatti accertati, connivenze scritte nelle sentenze come se lo scopo del giornalismo fosse quello di ungere una torbida pacificazione la lezione di Purgatori è esemplare e da custodire. La separazione delle carriere più urgente in questo Paese è quella tra il giornalismo e le autorità. #LaSveglia per La Notizia

Alle 20:59 del 27 giugno 1980 il volo di linea IH870 della compagnia area Itavia esplodeva nel tratto di cielo compreso tra Ponza e Ustica. Nessun superstite per quello che ancora oggi resta uno dei grandi misteri della storia italiana del secondo dopo guerra. L'aereo era decollato da Bologna e sarebbe dovuto atterrare a Palermo. A più di 40 anni da quei fatti drammatici Jacopo Pezzan e Giacomo Brunoro provano a interrogarsi su una vicenda oscura, una vicenda fatta di dolore, depistaggi, segreti di stato e muri di gomma impenetrabili. Il suo arrivo a Palermo è previsto intorno alle 21, ma il velivolo non atterrerà mai. Sparisce dai radar sopra i cieli tra le isole di Ponza e Ustica, in una località aeronautica denominata Punto Condor. 81 morti, nessun sopravvissuto. 43 anni dopo sappiamo molte cose di ciò che avvenne intorno alle 21 del 27 giugno 1980. Non fu un incidente o una bomba collocata nell'aereo, ma l'onda d'urto di un missile lanciato da un velivolo rimasto sconosciuto nell'ambito di uno scenario di guerra. L'allora Presidente del Consiglio e poi Capo dello Stato Francesco Cossiga indicò davanti ai giudici del tribunale civile di Palermo i francesi come i possibili mandanti della strage: il vero bersaglio era un Mig libico su cui volava Gheddafi. Nell'inchiesta bis scaturita dalle dichiarazioni di Cossiga, la procura di Roma ha chiesto e ottenuto dall'Aise, i servizi segreti, 32 documenti ora desecretati che escludono ogni manovra palestinese dietro all'abbattamento del Dc9 dell'Itavia. Gli investigatori hanno interrogato numerosi avieri francesi di stanza nella base di Solenzara, in Corsica, che hanno confermato la versione fornita dal generale Nicola Bozzo, allora braccio destro di Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, secondo cui quella sera  c'era un traffico aereo militare francese fuori dal comune. Sulle responsabilità francesi avevo accennato anche in un mio vecchio libro "Punto Condor" scritto con il collega Fabrizio Colarieti. Forse è giunto il momento che Parigi racconti cosa è accaduto davvero il 27 giugno 1980 di 43 anni fa e che l'Italia sia in grado di avere quel coraggio politico che finora è mancato a tanti Governi.

128: Patrick Sweeney: Fear Guru, Keynote Speaker, Author, and TEDx Speaker helping companies create a culture of courage, shares how he managed to go from overcoming an exhaustive work-over-everything mentality and being consumed by fear to aligning his life with balance, family, and courage. Patrick Sweeney Patrick Sweeney, who grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, and was diagnosed with leukemia. “I was born first generation Irish immigrants in Boston, blue-collar neighborhood. My parents didn’t go to college or anything like that. My dad is working three jobs. I had a really rough time growing up. But I had a bunch of trauma events as a child that planted this seed of terror in me.” In order to create an image to protect himself with when he was younger, Patrick trained for the Olympics for six years, coming in second in the Olympic trials, 10th in the world, rowed the World Cup for three years, and started three technology companies, raising over $50 million dollars.    On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Patrick Sweeney, Fear Guru, Keynote Speaker, Author, and TEDx Speaker who is helping companies create a culture of courage. Patrick discusses the importance of seeing what is on the other side of fear and embracing the things that we are depriving ourselves of. “I learned that if I was going to live life, I had to choose courage instead of succumbing to fear all the time.”    What You Will Learn:   Patrick Sweeney discusses the book he has been writing about fear. “As I started to learn more about courage and that sort of thing, I’ve interviewed now over 36 neuroscientists over the past five years for this book Fear is Fuel, which is coming out in January (2020). And during that time, one thing that is clear to me is that we all have something I call a ‘fear frontier.’ So, before you are 10 or 12 years old, you have an event or a series of events that you have to create a defense mechanism to.”   What was the root of all of his fear as he sees it? “I saw a plane crash when I was 7 years old and that planted that seed of terror inside me and so, two things happen when a traumatic event occurs. First, you create what is called a semantic memory, and those are just the facts. That gets written into your internal database. For me it was Delta, DC9, 100 people died, Logan Airport, rainy day, and that was it.”    “The second thing you get is the emotional memory. Death, dismemberment, I might have lost my parents. It could of been me. And at the same time too, I had a grandfather who felt that the way to make me stronger was to take his belt off and put me over the bed and beat me with it.” The way Patrick would respond to all of this was with a fear-based mechanism that prompted him to run away.   Having a supportive wife, of 20 years now, and being a father has been a significant part of Patrick Sweeney’s stability and drive to fight his fears face-to-face. “Uniquely enough, I decided I was going to get over that fear of flying. So, I started taking flying lessons. I got to tell you. The first one, I think I peed four times before I made it out to the plane.” Patrick Sweeney actually fell in love with flying by the third or fourth lesson and got his private pilot license, his commercial license, and even started competing in aerobatics.    Patrick discusses the advice he learned about his fears of not constantly working. “You’ve got to embrace that little boy in you. When you do something like go out and play on the rock or go and play on the ski slope or whatever, you’ve got to let go of this fact that you feel guilty that you should be working.”   Another Way to Live Life   What was the common reaction when Patrick Sweeney decided to live a new way? “If you can imagine at that time, being a part of this whole high-tech community and venture community where your identity is an entrepreneur/venture CEO and people saying, ‘What are you talking about you are going to move to Europe?’ ‘What are you talking about you are going to start adventuring and start doing the summits and buy a bike? That is ridiculous.’”    Find More Fear   If the common cliche is to get over our fears, why does Patrick Sweeney recommend that we find more fear? “We have to find more fear everyday. Scare ourselves everyday, and it doesn’t have to be jumping out of a plane. It can be getting up and making a toast at lunch because you are afraid of public speaking. As a 5-year-old, David Pettet wrote a letter to himself saying he wanted to be an airline pilot. He became a CFI as an 18-year-old, hired on as gate agent with a regional carrier, and parlayed that into a flying job. He was hired by Omni Air International as a B767 pilot, then moved to Hawaiian Airlines, flying the DC9 and the A330, and finally landed his current job at a major legacy airline. He has been a member of the National Gay Pilots Association since his early years as a pilot, and served in numerous leadership positions, rising to his current position as Executive Director. The NGPA has both gay and straight members, and offers numerous membership benefits, including networking opportunities and millions of dollars in scholarships available to all members. The NGPA is now an international organization, and is much larger than simply the LGBT community, offering networking opportunities for pilots of all genders and lifestyles. Their Industry Expo offers representatives from numerous airlines, including over 40 airline and vendor exhibitors. The last several hours of the Expo are reserved for members only, to allow them to interface with airline recruiters. The scholarship program is currently  giving away 3 B737 type ratings, over $100,00 in cash awards, and a $5000 Private Pilot scholarship. Here's the important point for all pilots: you don't need to be LGBT to win a scholarship - fully half of the scholarships go to straight pilots! The organization has stated, "In order for us to ask the industry to be inclusive of LGBT, we have to be inclusive as well." The organization offers several types of memberships, from individual to family and student.

Three dozen musical acts will fill eleven free performance areas during the day, leading up to a parade down V Street from 5-7 PM, and from 7 until late into the night, local music venues like U Street Music Hall, Tropicalia, DC9, Twins Jazz Club and Patty Boom Boom will offer free performances. maDCap took a drive with Justin Rood and heard all about the Funk Parade while driving along Saturday's route. Then, maDCap took Asheville, North Carolina by storm for the 2014 edition of Moogfest.
