One of the most fascinating things Sara learned about Andrea's family since they became friends is that she and her father are part of a long line of "Water Witches," people who are skilled at locating water sources using a special and mysterious technique called dowsing. We don't just call ourselves witches, we really are witches... and lucky you - dowsing class is now in session! Sara begged Andrea to teach her how to do it, and you guys get to learn about it too! Andrea is going to explain what dowsing and water witching are. Andrea even interviewed her dad Jim about how he taught her the ancestral practice as a child. Andrea's ancestral line has the proven skills to teach us the right way to water witch, and learning to do it comes with a hilarious and surprising bonus. When Andrea was researching the history of water witching for this episode, she was surprised to learn that the first recorded supernaturally tinged water dowsing back leads back to another nun who later became a Saint - Saint Teresa of Avila. We'll tell you all about the controversial "miracle" Saint Teresa witnessed! For part two of this conversation, we'll give you an update about Andrea's time in the hospital after surgery, and the high strangeness involved. If you found episode 11.5 interesting, you'll want to stick around for this episode too. While we both obviously knew that all of the strange things happening around Mother Joseph, Emilie Gamelin and Hidden bricks were authentic events as we were living them every day, this one really had us both questioning the very nature of... well, everything. We have no idea what any of this actually means, but we're all in and going to tell you about it and all about our MEGA ROSARIES anyway. Full show notes here! Thanks for listening!

We have all experienced trauma in one way or another, and if we don’t deal with it, it can manifest later in our lives and cause immense difficulties. Facing it is not easy, but there are so many tools out there to help you work through whatever is causing you pain. After an overwhelming response to her previous appearance on the show, Andrea Crowder joins us again, this time with her husband, Jeremy, in tow, to get real about what it means to work through trauma. In this episode, we hear the details of their love story and how they got married despite Andrea being in a dark time of her life. Jeremy saw the sparkle in her eye and knew that this was someone who was going to thrive if she had someone to support her while she was figuring out her life. The couple then bravely opens up about Jeremy’s PTSD and how it affected their relationship, as well as each of them as individuals. Living in a constant state of fight or flight impacts your whole life, so Jeremy and Andrea had to work to learn a new language to connect and truly listen to one another. We hear about the modalities, ART, and RRT, that helped Jeremy work through his trauma and see how he was hurting others through his actions. Our conversation also touches on the importance of coaching and therapy, realizing you are enough as you are, and why you should not shy away from asking for help. Being married is not easy, but is one of the most rewarding relationships you can have. If you can hold space for one another and feel like you are seen and heard for all that you are, the possibilities, as they have been for Jeremy and Andrea, are truly endless. At Tenfold we’ve been reflecting about racism in public health systems. This minisode and notes are meant to bring a few of these situations to light- by no means not a complete list- to encourage you to research further as part of your personal work. The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment was run by the United States Public Health Service, with Tuskegee University, from 1932 to 1972. A number of experiments were performed by various government departments and medical experts on malnourished children living in residential schools between 1942 and 1952. From the 1940s to 1960s, Inuit in the far north were separated from their families and transported, by ship, to sanatoriums in the south of Canada. Many families never heard from – or about- their relatives after that. During the 2009 H1N1 outbreak, leaders in First Nations reserves asked for supplies, such as vaccines, to fight the epidemic. Several reserves received shipments of body bags which arrived arrived prior to the H1N1 vaccinations. When Andrea consulted with PHESC colleagues Erica De Ruggio and Angella Mashford Pringle, they offered these two questions for reflection:Consider the levels of power that you, and your organization, have to maintain, change or disrupt systemsReflect on your position in life: Power, Privilege and Positionality, and how your position impacts your work in public health and community engagementStudies mentioned in the podcast/episode notes:Ammerman, A., Washington, C., Jackson, B., Weathers, B., Campbell, M., Davis, G., Switzer, B. When Andrea was studying math as an undergrad, she was required to take an arts class in order to graduate, and soon discovered that she loved poetry. She learned that the process of writing a poem was often similar to solving a complex math problem—just starting with one part, and then doing one more, and gradually the rest is revealed. She enjoyed it so much that her first machine learning project in graduate school was on poetry/sonnet generation. Andrea wanted to blend technology and art in her career and Getty Images turned out to be the perfect place to combine her two interests. Getty Images curates and manages a huge library of images and videos that are used in editorial news, websites, social media, billboards and more. She started as a data scientist two years ago, and is now leading the AI/machine learning team to develop new tools to help clients more effectively use Getty’s creative assets. She explains that many of their creative clients come to the site and don't have the language to describe the types of images they're looking for. Andrea’s team is building models to help clients find images when they don't have the words to articulate their vision. Another machine learning project they are working on is how to identify awkwardly posed “stocky” photos vs. the more realistic photos that clients are looking for.She is currently doing more painting than poetry, and also sees parallels between painting and computer vision. She explains that when you start with a blank canvas, you have to think about shapes, lines, negative space and colors. It’s a similar process to how a machine comprehends pixels and the relationships between colors, contrast, shapes and textures.Andrea created a special photo exhibit for the WiDS Stanford 2020 Conference that illuminates concerns about image manipulation while also posing provocative questions about gender and leadership. In the exhibit, she used machine learning (style GAN) to transform pictures of US presidents, ranging from George Washington to Donald Trump, into female versions of those presidents. The style GAN is a machine-learning model that can manipulate an image in different dimensions, in this case, from masculine to feminine. The project was born out of conversations around Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), synthetic image generation and concerns about the implications of deep fakes in politics and our culture. She wanted a way to expose that concern in a humorous way. She also saw this as an opportunity to re-imagine our history. What would the world be like today if our presidents had all been women? She says the first response to the exhibit is usually laughter, but then it also sparks questions like: What would it have been like if females had founded the country? What wars would have happened or not happened? What would our constitution be like? How would capitalism have evolved? It catalyzes a conversation about the qualities of great leaders what leadership means through a female lens. RELATED LINKSConnect with Andrea Gagliano on  LinkedInRead more about Getty ImagesConnect with Margot Gerritsen on Twitter (@margootjeg) and LinkedInFind out more about Margot on her Stanford ProfileFind out more about Margot on her personal website

Is it too early to pour a glass of wine?  I'm just going to have one drink while I read my book outside.  Okay, well, one more while I cooked dinner.  Oh, a glass of wine would taste so good with this pasta.  I think I'm just going to do half a glass.  Well, there's just a little bit left in the bottle. I'm just going to finish that up… And then at 3:00 AM, waking up with a headache and unable to go back to sleep, my monger starts chiming in: Why did you drink so much? What were you thinking? Why did you do that – again? Before I took a long, hard look at my drinking, this was what I put myself through most days of the week. Alcohol and anxiety tend to go hand in hand. We drink to decrease our anxiety and then because it feels so good, we drink too much and the result is an increase in anxiety.  Today, we're continuing our month of avoidance and anxiety by talking with Andrea Owen about the connection between avoidance and alcohol.  As a recovering alcoholic and life coach, Andrea has a unique perspective on the topic of avoidance and alcohol. She is the founder of Your Kick-Ass Life coaching and author of the books How To Stop Feeling Like Shit and 52 Ways To Live a Kick-Ass Life. I have been a huge fan of Andrea's for years, and this is the first time I've had the privilege of talking with her.  I love this interview for so many reasons, but the main point I want to leave you with is that alcohol use runs on a continuum and it is a personal decision. No one can tell you that you have a problem with alcohol except for yourself. For Andrea, her bottom was very high. For others, it takes much more drama and devastation before they notice they have a problem. If you haven’t had the chance, go back and listen to the episodes with Jacquette Timmons, Erica Drewry, and Bailey Parnell.  Listen to the full episode to hear: When Andrea knew she wasn’t just a social drinker Why it can be so hard to see that drinking is a problem Why alcohol gives us false hope as a treatment for our anxiety and why it can make for a dangerous combination What role society plays in drinking And what to do if you want to change your relationship with alcohol Andrea’s Links: Your Kick-Ass Life Podcast: Confession  Your Kick-Ass Life coaching How To Stop Feeling Like Shit 52 Ways To Live a Kick-Ass Life Facebook Instagram  Nancy’s Links: Coach in Your Pocket Live Happier Website Instagram: @nancyjane_livehappier --- During the pandemic, I'll be offering a mini version of my Voxer work. “[Plastic reduction] is being demanded now in a way it never has been before. There is a consumer awareness of what it means to live sustainably.”  Lori Taylor (6:35-7:00)   Changing the world, one package at a time.   Andrea Watson, Founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of Nature Knows, is passionate about sustainability, and is using this drive to change the world through packaging. Nature Knows is an eco-friendly packaging company who aim to make sustainability accessible to all. Andrea has been voted the Canadian Woman Food Entrepreneur of the year, and Nature Knows received the award of Duke's top innovative product of 2019.   “We're all busier, and that's not going away… We created a package that helps us... eat more fruits and vegetables on the go, but do it sustainably and get rid of all of that plastic.”  - Andrea Watson (3:45-4:18)    When Andrea's daughter started school, and Andrea found herself packing the lunch box each day, she realized that something had to shift in the way we package produce. The bags, boxes, and wrappers that ensure our produce makes it safely into our homes are contributing to astronomical amounts of waste.    Since 1950, over 8.3 billion tons of plastic has been generated.    However, currently statistics show that only 9% of plastics are being recycled.    One look around the produce section and you'll notice that most of the packaging is plastic.    And almost 90% of all of it will end up in landfills.      As a society, we've been talking about sustainability for years now. However, most of the focus has been placed on better stewarding our natural resources like water and energy, while not doing enough to reduce the amount of waste being created.    It's time to do something about it! And doing your part could be much simpler than you even realize.    What is Nature Knows?   Andrea and her team at Nature Knows have created an amazing, innovative solution to cut down on plastic waste.    They provide fresh fruits and veggies that are already washed through a special proprietary, all-natural process and packaged in containers come from the earth, and return to the earth.    Compared to traditional produce packaging, the cost increase is minimal, and completely with it when you think of the waste eliminated (both plastic and produce), and the convenience simply grabbing your veggies ready to eat straight out of the bag or box!    Ready to eat packaging helps ensure those fruits and veggies get eaten, on the go or at home, instead of browning beyond recognition at the back of your fridge. So much produce waste actually happens in our homes. Life is busy, and taking the time to prep your produce isn't always feasible.    These products are good for the planet, but also a lifesaver for your produce!    “We increase freshness 50% more than if it was in a plastic cup or tray. It's huge in terms of saving the food waste.” - Andrea Watson (8:45)    Not only is Nature Knows eliminating produce waste, but plastic waste as well. The packaging, called “eco-friendly plastic,” is made from corn. It looks and performs like plastic, but it's a breathable material that is fully compostable.   “It's called ‘eco friendly plastic,' but really it's made out of corn. A breathable material that's fully compostable. It comes from the earth and goes back to the earth.” - Andrea Watson (7:58)     What if I don't compost?    With busy lives that can feel as if they're getting busier by the day, composting may not make it to the top of your list of priorities.    That's ok!    Nature Knows products are created with everyone in mind!   What comes from the earth WILL return to the earth, whether in a compost pile or a landfill. Because the packaging is natural, it will break down WITHOUT creating more chemicals in our landfill. When it goes into the landfill, it does add to the amount of waste, but Nature Knows has lovingly nicknamed it, “good garbage.” While the product will break down more quickly in a home or commercial compost setting, it will still return to the earth over time.    So, whether you are an avid composter, or you feel accomplished when the empty produce bags make it out of the fridge and into the trash can, Nature Knows is for you.     How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! When you’re experiencing infertility, you need to hold on to two thoughts: You are not alone in this and there is always hope. Andrea Myers Miller joins me to talk about her journey through infertility, becoming a natural mom of three, and following God’s vision for her life to help other women who are having fertility issues. Finding Hope With Infertility  Andrea shares her own experience with infertility, her gut feeling that something was wrong, her experiences with doctor recommended IVF and her constant trust and relationship with God that helped her through this difficult time in her life. When Andrea decided she didn’t want to try medical intervention for infertility, she explored more holistic approaches, and within 6 months, was pregnant with her first child.  After the birth of her second child, Andrea felt called by God to share her infertility experience with social media. This is how her business, Pregnancy Acquired, began. She knows the power of prayer and collective well-being can help with infertility and encourages her clients to reach out and ask for prayer and community.  But Andrea also shares her trust in God’s plan, His work, and knowing when you need to take action to make it happen. God doesn’t always work in mysterious ways, sometimes He works by bringing a certain person or experience into your life at the right moment. Andrea is also a firm believer in the power of hope and explains how she held on to hope through her struggles, even when others in the infertility community had lost theirs. It’s the support we have through difficult and trying times that really helps us through them. Whether that’s our church community, our doctors, partners, family, friends, or online support groups, finding and holding onto that support is essential. When we exist in a more hopeful and supported state, we’re in a much better position to see positive outcomes from our harder times. Andrea explains how our lifestyle of convenience and toxins has a big impact on our fertility levels. She encourages her clients to change their lifestyle so they can live a more abundant and healthy life. She is also adamant that, if you are going through infertility, to examine all the options that are out there before coming to a decision - IVF isn’t the only way to become pregnant. Are you experiencing infertility? How do you trust that God is looking out for you? I’d love it if you shared in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode How having a relationship with God can help you through difficult times in your pregnancy journey What happens when you listen to what God wants you to do with your life How our current lifestyle is impacting overall levels of infertility What the power of prayer is when it comes to infertility Where the balance between God’s work and your action lies How hope can carry you through difficult times Why it’s essential to have good support when you’re going through infertility What happens when you’re in a more hopeful state Why, if you are working through fertility issues, you should be aware of all the options available to you How we can change our lifestyle in order to live a more abundant and healthy life   Quotes “I believe that even if one partner has been given the clean bill of health, there are always ways to optimize health for both individuals .” (21:45) “There is hope. No matter how rough and bad things look, the tough days you just feel like giving up, wondering what the point of all this is, it’s so important to hope and to just take another step forward. Walk into what God has in store for us, because it is good things.” (38:44) “At the end of the day, no matter what happens in life, we need to be able to say, ‘God is still good.’” (54:44)   Links Join Andrea’s Free Masterclass: How My Clients With Infertility Conceive Naturally Find Andrea Myers Miller Online Follow Andrea Myers Miller on Instagram | Facebook Running an online health business? Apply for my Inner Circle Mastermind Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! Emotions you ignore or don't understand can manifest as series problems such as anxiety.Andrea is the MD and lead children's emotional and behavioural psychologist at Unravel, and the author of "The Blinks" series of novels supporting children's well-being.A former teacher, Andrea was particularly interested in helping children who were presenting with emotional and behavioural issues. She launched Unravel to pioneer a new model of psychology, sitting between educational and clinical psychology, and designed to meet children's needs (rather than expecting children to adapt to a how a service is provided). When Andrea launched Unravel in 2014 she gained immediate validation from schools that there was a need for the services it provides. It now works in over 30 schools and has a team of 15.Andrea's work has a profound effect and impact, enabling children to learn strategies to help understand their emotions and become happier. She has also written The Blinks series of novels for children and young people after realising there is considerably more demand for Unravel's services than Andrea and her team can supply. Each novel examines an emotion that impacts on wellbeing, for example Worry, which is based around anxiety. Andrea discusses this and other books (addressing, for example, self-esteem, love, and anger) in detail. Many adults find the books enable them to name, claim, understand and address emotions too.Andrea covers her work and its impact; how the business has developed; her approach to recruitment; time management and more. Also in the studio: Mark Farnsworth of the Showroom Workstation discusses a forthcoming breakfast networking event for folk in the creative and digital industries.0 - 37:30 Andrea Chatten part 1.37:30 - 43:06 Mark Farnsworth and a forthcoming Sheffield business event.43:06 Andrea Chatten part 2.

If you haven’t seen Andrea Savage’s comedy series I’m Sorry, you should…just be prepared to laugh your butt off. As the creator, writer, and star of the series, Andrea does it all—which makes sense since the show is based on her own experiences being a comedian, wife and mom. But it is also a show about us. Andrea has found the universal truths of being a parent while being a working artist, and her observational powers reveal the absurdity and pathos in our own lives. For years, Andrea was stuck in development hell. She had a stable acting career with roles in Step Brothers, Episodes, and Veep, but true to her improv and Groundlings background, Andrea wanted to write and create as well. She was pumping out pilot scripts and selling them, but they weren’t getting made. As she says, “It was heartbreak after heartbreak of putting your all into a project, getting good notes, and then nothing. It was always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” When Andrea turned 40, the self-described “successful failure” decided to change her approach with I’m Sorry. She put together a crew with some help from her talented friends Judy Greer and Jason Mantzoukas, and she filmed her own pilot presentation.Andrea figured out that she needed to show her vision, because her story was nuanced and personal, not full of big jokes that jumped off the page. The approach worked like gangbusters. Her presentation became the first episode of the show and established her as a creator, showrunner, director, and a force to be reckoned with. As she says, “I literally just willed it to happen.”Andrea joins Off Camera to talk about why her writer’s room is better than therapy, why her lack of darkness makes her question her comedy bonafides, and her dedication to being a “joke shepherd.”

Andrea Accola is a multi-passionate creative, a musician, and a fierce believer. She recently moved from the Minneapolis area out to LA to help cultivate the gifts God has given her. Listeners on the show today will be activated to use the gifts you’ve been given for the greater good, but first and foremost, to prioritize character over talent always. Introduction to Andrea Accola (2:00) Andrea grew up in Norway and at 8 years old moved to Minnesota with her family. She has always been creative and desired to be on the cutting edge of what was happening for as long as she can remember. Growing up, there was tension with her parent’s relationship which led her to feel like she couldn’t be creative. For a long time Andrea also ran from being a leader because she was scared of her own leadership. She gave her life to Jesus freshman year of college and from there, it was a radical transformation from drinking and smoking to being concerned about who Christ was.  The Epiphany (4:45)  When Andrea was at a party, there was a moment in particular where she wondered why everyone was here and what the point of it all was.  A Passion for Music (5:20) Music is Andrea’s passion. She enjoys using this gift to impact people in a positive way.  Created to Create (6:00) We’re all created to create. Whether it be the arts, communication, cooking, decorating, design, it’s all unique! How has God fashioned you to create?  Embracing the Gifts (7:00)  Andrea moved to LA to invest in a church called Mosaic. This church in particular, has a way of attracting many talented people, while helping to cultivate individuals particular talents in celebratory, yet humble way. To check out the message that got Andrea interested in the first place with Mosaic, click here.  Full of Talent (8:30)  When you’ve been used to being a big fish in a small pond, then switch over to being a small fish in a big pond, it can be a little daunting to say the least! Andrea shares that Mosaic church is filled with incredible talent and many of the people attending do not hide their gifts, rather they’re at home in them.  True Leaders (11:00)  Andrea shares how Mosaic church makes and effort to host an environment in serving one another. Leadership is not commanding people to do something, rather it is serving people and the needs at hand.  Humble Leadership (12:30) When you serve people, naturally they will want to follow you. Great leaders are servants!  An Exciting Season Ahead (13:40) There's something significant about being around people who have a large amount of influence, a wide network of connections, and many talents. Andrea is learning so much from people around her and is seeing God set her up with dreams that don’t just involve herself, but involve others all around.  Character Over Talent (15:00)  Andrea shares how important it is to prioritize character over talent. What if we got so lost serving other people’s dreams that we couldn’t even see our own anymore? You never know how God may move you in a certain direction when your heart is in a place to simply serve people.  Let’s Be Honest (17:30)  In order to grow in character we need to be honest with God about where we’re at. If we pretend to be okay when we’re actually not, we aren’t going to receive healing in the places that we need. Psalm 94:9 (18:45)  At one point in Andrea’s walk with the Lord she came to this place of crying out and asking God where He was. After falling asleep crying one day, she woke up and decided to randomly open up her bible and came across Psalm 94:9. This bible verse says, “Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?”. This verse in particular, struck her heart in a way that she knew, God was always near.  One Turn Away (20:30) God is just a turn away and that is a truth Andrea holds close to her heart. Be Encouraged (20:50)  No matter how much pain you may be in, it's never justified to lash out at anyone. Letting God be your defender can be stunning. We have a choice to not be offended.  He Doesn’t Lie (23:15) God does not lie for He doesn't know how to do that. What an amazing truth!  James 1:13-15 (23:55) Carrie talks on a bible verse from James 1:13-15. It says, “when tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death”. He is our Defender (24:30) We can know that God is fighting for us always. He’s enough and is our defender!   CONNECT with Carrie Robaina by clicking here. CONNECT with Andrea Accola by clicking here. Lies seem to be the new norm in our world. There's probably a bumper sticker that says Lies Are the New Truth. Great bumper sticker, but it has Andrea Askowitz totally freaked out. Andrea is the teacher of the class and the host for this episode, which is about lies in stories and lies in the world. We start with a story by a new student, Claudia Franklin, that got us thinking about truth and lies in memoir and when, if ever, is lying fair game. Claudia's story takes a surprising turn as she imagines what life would have been like if her father wasn't the hen-pecked man he really was.Her story left Andrea wondering when, if ever, is trust broken between narrator and listener/reader. Fifteen years ago, Andrea took her first memoir writing class from Terrie Silverman who said, “Don't let the facts get in the way of the truth.” Andrea took that to mean that it was okay to exaggerate or change little facts for the sake of a bigger emotional truth. There's an unspoken pact between a memoir writer and reader or listener that says, what's being shared is the truth. But what is the truth? In 2003, James Frey wrote a book called A Million Little Pieces that was distributed as memoir. But Frey stretched the truth. In one example, he wrote that he spent 87 days in jail. According to police records, he served 5 hours. A lot of people thought he lied, including Oprah. Andrea wrote a story once about taking her wife, Vicky, to a tantric sex retreat. The story's about how she couldn't handle the intimacy and acted like a clown. In the privacy of their hotel room, they were instructed to stand facing each other, perform pelvic thrusts back and forth, then arm motions with elbows in, and hands out to the sides. Andrea added jazz hands. Except she didn't actually add jazz hands in their hotel room. In the story she wrote, she added jazz hands because that perfectly expressed her feelings in that moment. Allison Langer, co-producer and student in the class, challenged her. When Andrea says she tells the truth, Allison says, “What about jazz hands?” Before this current presidential election, Andrea would have defended jazz hands as an expression of her truth. Now she's not sure. Because now something has shifted in our culture. Now, we don't know what we're getting from America's highest office. And now with the normalization of lies no one knows what to believe. So, in a panic, Andrea called Terrie Silverman, to ask her if storytellers can be trusted anymore. Terrie alleviates Andrea's fears. She says that the rules and intentions are different in storytelling and politics. Politicians intend to manipulate. And the number one intention of the memoir writer is to get to his or her truth. Now Andrea thinks that if anything has changed for storytellers because of the lying culture we've been thrust into lately, it's that now, more than ever, we need jazz hands. She also shares her story of how both her + her husband come from a long line of divorce, but both worked hard to not repeat the same patterns + mistakes their family members made. I really loved this conversation in particular, because whether we like it or not, our parents have a huge influence on how we see ourselves + how we relate to others. And the more we resist becoming like our parents, the more we become like them. Andrea shares how she broke that cycle + is creating a new pattern for her relationship with her husband. As you listen, here's what you'll learn: The exact moment she realized she was recreating the marriage between her parents How getting healthy + creating a solid self-care routine transformed the relationship with herself + got her out of the first year of marriage woes with her husband How to know if you have unrealistic expectations of what you’re relationship “should” feel like, or if you’re settling And more! Andrea’s mission is to empower women to live authentically and stand in their own truth. When Andrea found herself unhappy, overweight, and lacking energy and excitement in her mid-20’s, she knew she needed a serious life overhaul and she set out to do just that. By surrounding herself with a community of like-minded women, and following the lead of mentors and coaches she invested in, Andrea was able to pull herself out of her funk and create the life she had always envisioned. We both wanted that candy bar.Miss Daisy was happy that Andrea and I were being so nice to each other. When it came time for lunch, she sat us at the same table with Ryan and Michael and Emily. I traded Emily my banana, and she traded me her potato chips.“Did you all bring in your stuff for the art contest?” asked Emily. “Ms. Hannah is going to judge the winner this afternoon.”I had forgotten all about the stupid art contest. Michael said he made a statue out of toothpicks. Ryan said he made a papier-mâché head. Emily made a collage. Andrea made a mobile with hanging butterflies (of course!).I was the only one who didn’t bring in anything. I hate art. Art is stupid.“Did you see the art room?” Andrea asked. “When I brought my mobile in, the place was just a big mess.”“Of course it’s a big mess,” Ryan said.“Have you ever seen Ms. Hannah throw anything away?”“She can’t throw anything away,” Michael said. “She doesn’t have a garbage can.”“That’s exactly what I mean,” Andrea said. “Ms. Hannah just gets more and more stuff, and never throws anything away. My mother is a psychologist. She helps people with their problems. And my mother says that people who can’t throw anything away have a problem.”I was going to tell Andrea that she was the one who had a problem. But I didn’t. I wanted that candy bar.“You know, everything isn’t art,” Andrea said. “Some things are garbage. Maybe Ms. Hannah became an art teacher because she couldn’t throw anything away. She might be a sick, sick woman who needs help.”“I never thought of it that way,” Ryan said.“We’ve got to help her!” said Emily.“What can we do?” asked Michael.“I’ve got an idea!” said Emily. “Why don’t we sneak into the art room during recess and clean it up? When Ms. Hannah sees how neat and clean everything is, she will realize she has a problem.”“That’s a great idea!” Andrea said.It didn’t sound like such a great idea to me. Cleaning things up was no fun at all. I don’t like cleaning my room at home. I sure didn’t want to clean up the art room. But I didn’t want to get into an argument with Andrea either. If we had a fight, I wouldn’t get my candy bar. After we finished lunch, the five of us snuck down the hall to the art room.Andrea was right. The place was a big mess. That’s when I came up with the greatest idea in the history of the world.“You know what?” I said. “Instead of cleaning this place, we should mess it up even worse.”“Why would you want to do that?” Emily asked.“If we really mess it up bad, Ms. Hannah will be so shocked that she will realize she has a problem.”It sounded like a genius idea to me.Cleaning isn’t fun at all, but messing things up is lots of fun.“I’m not sure that’s such a good idea, A.J.,” Andrea said.“Sure it’s a good idea,” I said.“Trust me, A.J. It’s not a good idea.”Andrea thinks she knows everything.Well, she doesn’t know everything.“I’m not cleaning this place up,” I said.“I’d rather go outside for recess.”“You promised you would help,” Andrea said.“I did not.”“Did too.”“I hate you, A.J.!”That’s when Andrea did the dumbest thing in the history of the world. She pushed me.If I knew she was going to do something dumb like that, I could have gotten ready for it. But how was I to know she was going to do something dumb like push me?My foot must have slipped or something, because I fell backward.Right behind me was Ms. Hannah’s newspaper ball. When I fell backward, I landed on top of the ball. The ball rolled. I rolled on top of it.“Watch out!” Emily screamed. My foot hit Andrea’s butterfly mobile that was hanging from the ceiling. The butterfly mobile landed on my head.On the floor behind the ball were a bunch of cans of paint. I tried to get out of the way, but I couldn’t. When I hit the ground, I hit the paint first.“You stupid dumbhead!” Andrea shouted. “You crushed my butterflies!”“You pushed me into them!”“I did not! You fell on them on purpose!”I got up off the floor. Paint and butterflies were all over me. Red. Yellow. Blue. Green. It was cool.“Hey, look!” I said. “Art is everywhere.” Ryan and Michael laughed.“How can you make jokes at a time like this?” Andrea said. “You ruined my mobile! Now I won’t win the contest!”“You’re going to be in big trouble, A.J.,” Emily said.“Somebody’s coming,” Ryan said.“Everybody shut up!”That’s when the door opened. Ms. Hannah and Mr. Klutz came in. I was standing there with paint and Andrea’s stupid butterflies hanging all over me.“What’s the meaning of this?” Mr. Klutz asked. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to say. I had to think fast. “It’s . . . performance art,” I said.Everybody looked at me for like a mil- lion hundred seconds.“Yeah,” Andrea finally said. “It’s friendship performance art. A.J. and I made it together.”Ms. Hannah walked around me and looked me over. One of the butterflies slid down my head and stopped at the end of my nose.“It’s Connecticut friendship performance art,” I said.“I think it’s fabulous!” Ms. Hannah said.“It is so very creative. I believe the winners of the art contest are Andrea and A.J.!”Everybody cheered and clapped. Mr. Klutz reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out two candy bars.“I’m so pleased to see the two of you are getting along so well together,” he said. “I promised you each a little something if you could go a day without fighting. Here is your prize. Congratulations!”The candy bar tasted great. Maybe art isn’t so stupid after all. After it was all over, I still hatedAndrea. Andrea still hated me. Ms. Hannah still had a big problem with collecting garbage. I said I would try to be nice to Andrea. She said she would try to be nice to me. And we both said we would try to help Ms. Hannah with her problem. But it won’t be easy!
