Imagine this. You're teaching your child to ride a bike. If you don't have kids, just imagine a beloved child. You've just taken the training wheels off for the first time and you help them get on the bike. With your hand on one handlebar and the other on the back of the seat you slowly get them rolling. You tell your child you're going to let go on the count of three. 1, 2, 3. You let go, and they wobble for exactly one half of a pedal rotation before falling over.  What is your reaction to this quote failure unquote? Do you tell this child they are an idiot and a failure? Do you tell them might as well forget they crazy dream of ever riding a bike like the other big kids? Of course not. You stand beside them and tell them that was a great start and that you're proud of them, and then you help them get back on the bike to try again. So why is this so different from the way many of us talk to ourselves after a quote failure unquote? Maybe it's time to relearn how to parent ourselves. Or maybe – as my guest today says – it's time to learn how to kick ass compassionately, to celebrate small victories, learn from our mistakes and discover the power of the restart. My guest today is Kathleen Trotter. Kathleen first appeared on this show about a year ago, and she's back again today to help us become our fittest future selves. Kathleen is a fitness expert, media personality, personal trainer, writer and author, and as you'll soon hear, she is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about helping people live their best lives. She believes that we should live our lives by design, not by default to become our best – and fittest – selves. But that's easier said than done. But not to fear – Kathleen is here to guide us on this journey.  Join us today as Kathleen shares her thoughts on why working is winning, the importance of perseverance, patience, and intentions, why we need to build systems now that will support our future selves, and the criticality of mindset and self-love. You can connect with Kathleen I the following ways: Website - www.kathleentrotter.comFacebook - @FITbyKathleenTInstagram - @fitbykathleentYouTube - Kathleen Trotter Personal Trainer - YouTubeTwitter - @fitbykathleent Kathleen's first appearance on the Over 50 Health & Wellness podcast - https://silveredgefitness.com/how-to-create-your-fittest-future-self-with-kathleen-trotter/Book - Finding Your Fit: A Compassionate Trainer's Guide to Making Fitness a Lifelong Habit by Kathleen Trotter - https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Your-Fit-Compassionate-Trainers/dp/1459735196/Book - Your Fittest Future Self: Making Choices Today for a Happier, Healthier, Fitter Future You by Kathleen Trotter - https://www.amazon.com/Your-Fittest-Future-Self-Healthier/dp/1459741285/The Power of Habit Ted Talk w/ Charles Duhigg - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMbsGBlpP30Book – The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg - https://www.amazon.com/Power-Habit-What-Life-Business/dp/1400069289/Book – Atomic Habits by James Clear - https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/0735211299/Andrew Huberman on Impact Theory - https://impactth

Kathleen's unique approach to fitness and coaching—namely, that a person's mindset and mental health is just as critical to their overall health as the number of hours they spend at the gym—sets her apart from many of her peers. Her commitment to improving the overall wellbeing of her clients rather than just helping them hit a number on the scale comes from a place of knowing what it's like to hate your body, as she grew up overeating, sneaking junk food and using every excuse she could think of to get out of gym class until, years later, Kathleen become her own health hero. For decades, the conventional wisdom has been that if you don't work out, it's because you're not motivated or disciplined enough. They explore how unhealthy habits can be masked as healthy habits, how our eating habits are connected to our emotional scars and beliefs, why you shouldn't always try your best, 6 types of self-sabotage and types of eating disorders that aren't commonly addressed or known.Kathleen Trotter is a personal trainer, life coach, nutritionist, and author of Finding Your Fit.Timestamps(00:00) Who is Kathleen Trotter? (01:40) Episode overview: Self-sabotage, intuitive eating, and eating disorders (02:35) How Tessa got disconnected from her body's satiety cues(07:25) Why diets don't work long-term (and the difference between shame and guilt) (13:37) Disordered eating: serving yourself vs. serving your fear(17:14) “Tessa got skinny and became a b*tch” (26:34) There's more to disordered eating than anorexia and bulimia(35:22) 6 types of self-sabotage you might unknowingly be guilty of(53:18) Should you keep things from people to protect them?(55:31) Don't try your best(59:03) Can friends replace therapists? 5 Key Takeaways 1) The reason generic diets don't work long-term is that they don't help you connect with your body. Unless you can understand the cues your body sends and the deeper thoughts and emotions around what you think of food, you will always go back to your unconscious beliefs and habits.2) Rigid choices masked as healthy choices are sometimes a survival mechanism. For example, you may feel you have to be extremely strict with your diet - or else people will stop liking you. In the beginning, these rigid choices help you stay happy and alive. However, once you're in a slightly better place you must reevaluate your choices and ask yourself: how can I make decisions that really serve me instead of serving my fear?3) Disordered eating is not limited to anorexia or bulimia. There are various types of disordered eating that are not popularly known. One example is orthorexia. Orthorexia is being a perfectionist about your healthy ways to the point where healthy habits turn unhealthy.4) 6 types of self-sabotage: (1) perfectionism, (2) snowball effect, (3) I deserve, (4) crying wolf, (5) too busy effect, and (6) trying to be something you're not.5)You can't try your best at everything. You don't need to be your best at everything. Choose what's important to you and try your best at those things.Links

Kathleen is currently working to become a life coach. Kathleen's unique approach to fitness and coaching—namely, that a person's mindset is more important as the number of hours they spend at the gym—sets her apart from many of her peers. Her commitment to improving the overall wellbeing of her clients, rather than just helping them hit a number on the scale and leaving it at that, comes from a place of knowing what it's like to hate your body, as she grew up overeating, sneaking junk food and using every excuse she could think of to get out of gym class. Eventually, she became her own health hero. Some topics we touched on during the podcast include: Why a growth mindset is crucially important when you're trying to meet fitness (or any) goals How to understand and utilize your brain chemistry to work for you. Why Kathleen believes people should ditch motivation and willpower. How to set up systems to save yourself from your future self What is the importance of mindset; specifically, a growth mindset? Why tracking is important, how best to do it, and how it keeps you accountable to yourself Why understanding hormones—especially dopamine—is important to achieving your goals Why noting your small victories is crucial to staying on track Why aiming for consistency over perfection is the key to maintaining a regular fitness practice How learning to embrace your bad days makes your good days even better SHOW LINKS: Website: http://www.kathleentrotter.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FITbyKathleenT/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fitbykathleent/ Shop Eco-friendly & Sustainable fashion use code WITCHY for 20% off your purchase at Blair Lane Co. - www.blairlaneco.com Take the Anxious Personality Type Quiz: https://www.anxioustoaligned.com/quiz evo HEMP products: use code WITCHY for 20% off your purchase!

We are culturally programmed to focus on the outcome – not the journey. Afterall, we are rewarded for outcomes. But this model applies poorly to health and fitness. When we focus primarily on “losing weight” or “getting fit,” we miss a huge component of creating sustainable life-long change. And that's the journey – as in the HOW and WHY we create change. My guest today states that working is winning – implying that the magic is in the work, that the small steps you take towards a big goal matter in creating any meaningful change. Before we worry about what diet is best: should we do keto or intermittent fasting, or what exercise program we should follow - we need to understand the work ahead, and to create and nurture the perseverance, patience, and intention that will allow us to move steadily on our journey. Along our journey we'll need to construct systems and frameworks that will support our future selves and set us up for success. My guest today is Kathleen Trotter. Kathleen is a fitness expert, media personality, personal trainer, writer and author, and as you'll soon hear, she is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about helping people live their best lives. She believes that we should all live our lives by design, not by default to become our best – and fittest – selves. But that's easier said than done. But not to fear – Kathleen is here to guide us on this journey. Join us as Kathleen Shares her thoughts on why working is winning, the importance of perseverance, patience, and intentions, why we need to build systems now that will support our future selves, and the criticality of mindset and self-love.Connect with Kathleen:Website - www.kathleentrotter.comFacebook - @FITbyKathleenTInstagram - @fitbykathleentYouTube - Kathleen Trotter Personal Trainer - YouTubeTwitter - @fitbykathleentWe discussed the following resources in this episode:Book - Finding Your Fit: A Compassionate Trainer's Guide to Making Fitness a Lifelong Habit by Kathleen Trotter - https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Your-Fit-Compassionate-Trainers/dp/1459735196/Book - Your Fittest Future Self: Making Choices Today for a Happier, Healthier, Fitter Future You by Kathleen Trotter - https://www.amazon.com/Your-Fittest-Future-Self-Healthier/dp/1459741285/Andrew Huberman on Impact Theory - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGa_jt3IncYReview of the book Molecule of More https://www.kathleentrotter.com/2021/09/27/dopamine-vs-dopamine-vs-the-here-and-now-chemicals-which-do-you-need-to-feed/Article on importance of little wins https://www.kathleentrotter.com/2021/10/27/merely-participating-subjective-insertion-and-the-power-of-celebrating-the-little-wins/Book – Finite and Infinite Games by James Carse – https://www.amazon.com/Finite-Infinite-Games-James-Carse/dp/1476731713/Book – Mindset – The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol Dweck - First Highlighted Book: Mindset by Carol Dweck - Kathleen TrotterPodcast – What's Essential - https://gregmckeown.com/podcast/Dr. K

There is a common belief that only motivated people can exercise frequently and have a balanced diet. The truth is, motivation alone is not enough. People feel motivated, and motivation, just as any feeling, fluctuates; the urge to stay under cozy blankets instead of running 8 miles is something motivated people feel very often. But then, if not motivation, are there any tools we can use to keep our health and fitness on track? Our guest, Kathleen Trotter, found some very effective ones, and she shared them with us today. Kathleen Trotter is a Personal Trainer, MSc in Exercise Science, CSNN Nutritionist, and Author of "Finding Your Fit." Daughter of two very active parents, Kathleen learned that movement and being active was non-negotiable; the only thing that was up to her was how she chose to remain active. She went through the running path; she ran 9 marathons, countless half-marathons; she also participated in 4 half-ironman and 1 ironman (ironwoman). In this episode, we delve into some of Kathleen's secrets to remain active, the right approach to turn physical activity and movement into an enjoyable experience, and the options we have when our workout motivation is low. We also dive deep into Kathleen's journey of becoming who she is today and the challenges she faced before embracing fitness and a healthy lifestyle. We talk about the importance of focusing on what we can control, progressive adaptation to exercise, and much more. Tune in to Episode 118 and start the year with an easy-to-adopt approach to health and fitness. Some Questions I Ask:What can we do when we have those days where we need to get motivated to go out and exercise? Holding 2 truths at the same time sounds tough, and you'd be right, but as you'll learn in this episode, it's a key variable of emotional maturity and getting yourself to the gym, saying no to the entire jar of cookies and eating nutrient-dense food! At the core of this is, really knowing yourself which begins first with getting to know who you are and how you perform best, which is different for EVERYONE. Think about your future self or larger payoff- Is exercise only goal driven?- Journaling idea: elimination vs reproduction exercise- You have to be very intentional about what you want for your life- What if you're an all-or-nothing thinker?- What we can learn from parenting and apply that to making exercise a priority- Keep looking until you find what you really like- You have to embrace the suck, and sort of “earn the right” to be good at it- You don't have to be great to start something, but you do have to start to get great- Ask someone to teach you what to do, try different fitness apps, or hire a fitness coach or trainer- Make a list of your 10-, 20-, 30-minute options so you don't have to think about it when you have the chance- Scheduling our exercise is really important- Know your tendency: Obliger, Rebel, Questioner, Upholder (The Four Tendencies book: - 4 workout personalities from Kathleen's book- You have to set up systems for your less motivated self- The biggest thing: if it doesn't work, learn from it and see what else you can try- Exercise relieves stress, almost immediatelyIntro/Exit Music  - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes

“The key to staying active is to frame daily movement as a non negotiable. Don't ask yourself if you will move. Instead ask yourself when you will move. – Kathleen Trotter I am thrilled to talk to Kathleen Trotter on the Ascend Lifestyle Performance Podcast.  Kathleen Trotter has been inspiring Canadians for 15 years on television, through her work as spokesperson for Quesada restaurants, and with her columns in The Globe and Mail and The Huffington Post. Her mission is to move people to the “fitness is an integral part of my daily life” category with her no-nonsense approach to diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Here's what we talk about: How to be compassionate with yourself when making healthy lifestyle changes (and that doesn't mean ‘letting yourself off the hook') Why the notion that you'll be a ‘new you' or have a ‘whole new body' is NOT something we should ever strive for, and what we should strive for instead The most common diet and fitness mistakes people make when trying to make healthy choices. And why we cannot keep a jar of almond butter in our house :)
