Since this past December here at the Traveler we've been bringing you a series of stories on the Endangered Species Act and the threatened and endangered species it's intended to keep from going extinct. For me, it's been an eye-opening series because of what our editors and writers have learned about threatened and endangered species — from birds to trees and even to grasses — and the work being done to help them recover. It's certainly not an easy task, and one that often takes decades before you can see progress. In today's podcast, I sit down again with Jake Li, the vice president for conservation policy at Defenders of Wildlife, to get his take on efforts in Congress to rewrite the Endangered Species Act in ways that might not be so beneficial for threatened and endangered species. I'm excited to talk about one of my favorite places, Cumberland Island National Seashore here in coastal Georgia. I got word from the nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife that they are working to prevent some new proposed construction of large houses on Cumberland Island and increased recreational activity that will be disruptive to wildlife. We also talk about the wild horses who live there, as they were introduced to the island and they face some welfare issues and also cause some ecological issues for island habitat. As part of this discussion, we will consider the trump administration's budgetary and staffing cuts to the National Park Service, but end this 20-minute segment on a positive note by discussing the Wildlife Corridors Act proposed in Congress, to help wild animals migrate safely between habitats on public lands. The event ran long days and was busy but enjoyable. – At Blubrry he's been promoted to VP of Operations, overseeing teams and day-to-day work; Barry (another cofounder) is now CEO. He encourages podcasters to contact him for help, states he uses Blubrry hosting and the PowerPress plugin, and plugs Blubrry's services. – Technology and AI: – He discusses AI-generated content broadly: YouTube's proliferation of AI-narrated slideshow-style or AI-generated videos; his guilty pleasure of “AI Karen stories” on YouTube (which he knows are AI and mostly fiction). – He references a MacRumors article reporting YouTube will automatically label AI videos even if creators don't, and applauds the move, predicting many viewers will prefer non-AI content when labeled. – He raises concerns about AI in podcasting: AI-voiced podcasts and companies generating massive amounts of AI podcast content. He names a company, Inception PointAI, that reportedly generated a lot of AI podcast content and moved from Spreaker to Megaphone/Spotify; he says such AI content can hallucinate and produce factually untrue information, and that some AI podcasts present content as true. – He describes his own measured use of AI: he uses AI for transcripts and some artwork that he then tweaks, and he tried a cloned AI voice for one episode a few years ago but it didn't sound right. He notes telltale patterns of AI-written scripts and advises never to ask AI for its opinion. – He touches on scams: modern scam emails are harder to spot because language models clean up grammar; he warns about requests for immediate payment, iTunes/gift cards, or crypto as signs of scams. – Advertising and social media observations: – Criticizes YouTube mid-roll ads that interrupt videos, and the perceived decline in value of TV ads—locally seeing many online gambling ads in Michigan. – Observes AI activity on Facebook: AI agents entering groups to start conversations (sometimes inane or provocative) and AI-generated video shorts (e.g., airplanes doing impossible things). He dislikes Facebook's prompts to read more on Threads and says he doesn't want more social media accounts. He mentions being on LinkedIn, using X a little, and participating on Reddit, and says he plans to use a flip phone when he retires. YouTube Will Now Automatically Label AI Videos Even When Creators Don’t – Podcasting industry and advice: – Clarifies his use of “podcast” to mean generally audio (though he acknowledges podcasts can be video) and emphasizes that podcasting is a distribution method open to anyone. – Contrasts highly produced, broadcast-style podcasts (teams of producers and sound designers) with indie, authentic podcasts (one person talking into a microphone from a shed). He values indie authenticity and accessibility. – References a report by Tom Webster of Sounds Profitable noting people seek authentic-sounding podcast audio. He warns the industry is bifurcating between highly produced shows and indie creators. – Gives practical advice: podcasting is inexpensive and accessible (buy a microphone, record, compress to MP3, upload to hosting or WordPress to create an RSS feed). Suggests inexpensive cover art via Fiverr and mentions Blubrry hosting around fifteen dollars. Warns that podcasting generally won't replace a day job quickly—monetization takes time and consistency. – Lists three elements for podcast success: consistency, authenticity, and having content that is interesting/informative/compelling (he stumbles on phrasing but leaves the point authentic). He notes technology barriers are lower now; you don't have to be a geek. – Explains distribution parity: small indie shows can sit beside big shows like Joe Rogan in directories; one can succeed without becoming huge. When Frances Xavier Cabrini stepped onto the shores of America, she didn't arrive with power or privilege — she arrived as a woman, a foreigner, and someone who understood firsthand what it felt like to be overlooked. That lived experience became the very foundation of her extraordinary ministry to immigrants, orphans, the poor, and the forgotten. In this episode, Sophia Bricker draws a thread from Mother Cabrini's life all the way back to the Israelites in Egypt — a people who knew the sting of being strangers in a foreign land — and forward to us today, asking a quietly convicting question: do we love our neighbors the way God loves them? God's instruction to the Israelites was rooted in remembrance — you were once the foreigner, so love the foreigner among you. Jesus affirmed that same call in the greatest commandments, and the parable of the Good Samaritan made clear that our "neighbor" reaches far beyond those who look and live like us. We may not be building orphanages around the world, but the opportunities to extend a hand of welcome, to defend the cause of the needy, and to bring light into dark places are all around us — in our communities, our workplaces, and our homes — if we are willing to look. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt." — Deuteronomy 10:18-19, NIV Ponder Today Your past struggle can become your greatest ministry. Frances Cabrini and the Israelites both served others better because of what they had endured. God doesn't waste our hard experiences — He uses them to soften our hearts toward others. Loving your neighbor is not optional. Jesus named it as the second greatest commandment (Mark 12:30-31). It is not a suggestion for those with extra time or resources — it is a call extended to every follower of Christ. Your neighbor is broader than you think. The parable of the Good Samaritan dismantles every boundary we place around who deserves our love. Our neighbor includes those who are different from us in ethnicity, nationality, and circumstance. Small acts of love are never insignificant. Whatever is done for the poor, the hungry, and the stranger is done for Christ Himself (Matthew 25:34-40). You don't need a platform or a position of influence — you need willingness. Don't let fear, politics, or opinion stop you from doing what is right. The call to love our neighbors can feel complicated in today's world, but God's standard has not changed. Step out in faith and trust Him to guide you to the opportunities He has already prepared. A Prayer for You Today Great God and Defender of the widow and orphan, I confess I often struggle to know how to reach out to those around me who are in need. Guide me to the opportunities where I can use the gifts and resources You've given me to bless and serve others. Keep me from letting fear, politics, or the opinions of others prevent me from doing what I know to be right. Help me to remember that by welcoming the stranger, I am welcoming You. As many as 25% of the population may have perished.At the heart of this conflict was siege warfare. Across Ireland, towns, castles, forts and fortified houses came under attack. Some were taken by storm, while others were blockaded until starvation and disease did their work. Defenders faced cannon fire, tunnelling, psychological warfare and the terrifying prospect of what might happen if the walls were breached. Meanwhile, thousands of civilians had no escape and suffered appallingly. In this episode, I'm joined by historian Padraig Lenihan to explore the brutal reality of siege warfare in 17th-century Ireland. We look at why these conflicts were so destructive, how sieges were fought, and why warfare in Ireland was often more violent than in Britain during the same period.
