The conversation I had with Rachel was genuine. She has a great support system, and she loves being an independent author. Rachel grew up in Western PA and found her love of reading early in life, supported by her parents with frequent trips to the library and local bookstores. She stumbled into the bookish world in late 2020 and has embraced the lifestyle whole-heartedly, diving headfirst into the Romance genre, becoming a book reviewer and Bookstagrammer. In 2021, she changed careers, took a job at an indie bookstore, and started her first official novel-length writing project. Now, Rachel is getting an MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University and juggling too many story ideas for one brain to handle. She's excited to continue to share Happily Ever Afters with you that bring the swoons, the spice, and the humor. Rachel had a dream to do what she loves, and this dream became a reality in 2022. Rachel's debut novel, "Carry Me Through Christmas," published November 10, 2022. Signed copies are always available for purchase. She continues to move forward with "Capitally Matched." Rachel's currently working on a new series of interconnected standalones featuring five brothers while she pursues an MFA in Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University. When not immersed in her bookish world, you can find Rachel hanging out with her husband and two cats, spending time with friends in the Washington DC area, and rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams. We have three horror shows left. But we are not sure Jennifer McMahon fits within the genre so neatly. If you are dipping your toe into the genre...start with the Children on the Hill, her latest. It's suspenseful, compelling, chilling and the ghoulish gore is at a bare minimum. We talk to her about why she keeps coming back to what scares her. We then talk to horror academic (yes, you heard us) Michael Arnzen, an accomplished writer in his own right. Albert Wendland is the author of three sci-fi novels and a poetry collection, all featuring his character Mykol (pronounced "Michael") Ranglen as a universe-exploring poet adventurer. His newest novel is "Haunted Stars" and is available now from Dog Star Books. Apart from the poetry collection - which features poems written by Ranglen - the books are adventures colored by Golden Age sci-fi yearnings but with a noir sensibility added in. You wonder who to trust. You wonder what the next discovery will mean for the humans bouncing between stars. You turn each page with wonder. Wendland is also co-founder of the Seton Hill University Writing Popular Fiction MFA, alongside Lee McClain. He still teaches there in an adjunct capacity while also writing and doing things other than writing to stay sane, just like his character Ranglen. We chat about the MFA program, how he came to create his sci-fi alter ego, what it's like writing multiple stories with a recurring character, plus how teaching plays into his reading and writing. Episode 232 is with my friend Demi Michelle Schwartz. Demi is a singer/songwriter and author. She returns to update us on all of the latest projects and things she is working on. You will love her fun spirit and fearless goals. From her website - Demi Michelle Schwartz is an author from Pittsburgh, PA. She's loved reading YoungAdult Mysteries and Thrillers from a young age, and she's inspired by the work of Sara Shepard and Karen M. McManus. Being drawn to these thrilling and twisty novels for the YA audience eventually led her to step into the shoes of an author herself. There's something so enchanting about these stories that pulls her in, beyond the clues, red herrings, and dangerous twists and turns. She's drawn in by the realism and truth that these stories are ones that could happen. There's so much to be gleaned from the way protagonists act and react in the face of danger and how a complex puzzle can lead to justice being served or the lingering feeling of the world still being slightly off-balance. So much can be learned about the human condition from these stories, and Demi continues to explore this concept both as a reader and author of crime fiction.Demi earned both a BA in Creative Writing and BA in Music at Seton Hill University inGreensburg, PA. With encouragement from her undergraduate English professors, she went on to pursue her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill and graduated with her degree in June of 2022. She has finished writing her debut YA Mystery novel and is currently seeking representation. When Demi isn't revising her second novel, a YA Psychological Thriller, she's busychasing her other dream as a songwriter. Her creativity knows no bounds because along withbeing a creative writer and songwriter, she's the host of her own podcast, Write on Track: ASongwriting Podcast. Whether Demi is writing a full-length novel or crafting her next song, she always aims to inspire and encourage others to shoot for the stars. For more about Demi, visit her website - https://demimschwartz.com/

Please join us in welcoming Demi Michelle to chat with Heart of Indie Radio station owner and international radio host, Captain Eddie. About Demi Heartfelt, charismatic, and unique are three words used by reviewers to describe Demi Michelle's music. She turns her life experiences into songs that touch the hearts of her listeners through captivating storytelling in her lyrics. Her creativity and love for both pop and country music drive her passion for writing meaningful songs with melodies that wrap each song's message in the warmest hug. She greatly looks up to Julia Michaels, Kelsea Ballerini, and Taylor Swift, three incredible songwriters who share their stories in raw and truthful ways. Demi strives to remain honest and authentic as a songwriter in her own music and during her collaborations with other songwriters and artists. Demi pieced together her songwriting passion over the years. She began piano lessons in fifth grade, took voice lessons in high school, and learned guitar while in college. Also being a creative writer and in graduate school for her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction, Demi is always finding ways to blend her musical talent and storytelling in powerful ways. Demi kicked off her journey in 2019 with her debut single, “Into Focus,” and followed after with “All I Want This Christmas” and “LA Will Wait for Me.” On May 21, 2021, Demi released “Will I Ever.” This is the lead single off her debut album, Dear Diary, which is coming on October 15. Demi thinks of the song as entry one from the musical pages of Dear Diary. In “Will I Ever,” Demi shows that she's not afraid to be vulnerable in her music. The song found a home on many radio stations and shows and has been embraced worldwide. The song charted on radio stations as well, including climbing to number two on the New Music Radio Top 40 on Revival Radio and number eight on the Heart of Indie Radio Top 10. Demi released another entry from her musical diary on August 20. “Find Love,” the second single off the album, is an acoustic-pop song with a country flavor. This song highlights Demi's passion for writing authentic music with meaningful storytelling. Like “Will I Ever,” “Find Love” captures Demi's feelings about falling in love, but this song brings a hopeful quality to the lyrics. Demi is looking forward to sharing the rest of the story when Dear Diary releases in October.

They Come From the Void by Luke Elliott. Narrated by J.S. Arquin. Featuring an afterword recorded by Luke Elliott. Orblights rose from beneath black waves, boiling the saltwater into white banks of steam. Seven lighthouses flashed golden as their rotating lenses cut beams from the headland into the rolling sea. The orblights hovered over shoals, between craggy sea stacks, and amid high breaking surf in paths unwavering, though the sea assailed them. They would only alter course to glide up the sheer cliffs into the coastal village of Overmorn Cove, whose people congregated outside their homes to meet them. Luke Elliott's fiction has appeared in Metaphorosis Magazine, the Buckman Journal, and The Best Vegan Science Fiction and Fantasy of 2018 collection. He has a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Florida, an MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University, and is a graduate of the Viable Paradise writer's workshop. We kick off season 2 with an exploration into the absurd. Our guest, multi Bram Stoker Award Winner, professor of Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University, and Mentor to our co-host, EV Knight, Dr Mike Arnzen leads the way with a prompt we never could have come up with on our own. We get into a couple different variants on the idea of the Toys For Tots boxes that can be found all over the place leading into the holiday season and what else they might be doing there. If this episode teaches you anything, it’s that no idea is too weird to look into, and that once you do get weird, the fun part can be figuring out how to tie it all back in to real life somehow. Enjoy our first foray into guests on the show! Season 2 has more on the schedule and we are immensely excited to bring them to you!

Hey there word nerds! Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Aileen Erin on the show. Aileen is half-Irish, half-Mexican, and 100% nerd. From Star Wars (prequels don’t count) to Star Trek, she has a severe fascination with the speculative and supernatural. This fascination led her into writing, but after Twilight, Aileen was told that nobody wanted to read another vampire or werewolf story. She didn't agree and wrote one anyway. She proved her critics wrong as her independently published Alpha Girl series, has sold over 1.5 million copies. She earned a BS in Radio-TV-Film from the University of Texas at Austin, and went on to earn her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. She has since founded an independent boutique publishing house Ink Monster. Aileen’s latest novel, Lunar Court, is the eighth installment of her USA Today bestselling series Alpha Girl, and is available now. So listen in as Aileen and I chat about this awesome fantasy series and how to successfully write and publish your books through indie publishing. In this episode Aileen and I discuss: Using reader input to help you decide what story to write next. How to change the point of view character throughout a series the right way. Planning your world organically. The series strategy in indie publishing, and why it works. Producing a book as an indie boutique publisher from beginning to end. Plus, Aileen’s #1 tip for writers. Hey there word nerds! Today I’m pleased to have K.J. Howe on the show. K.J. is the executive director of Thrillerfest, the annual conference of International Thriller Writers. This is one of my favorite genre conferences and I look forward to it every year. Today I'm talking to Daphne du Maurier Award winner, K.J. Howe about her debut thriller, The Freedom Broker and how to craft a strong female lead in this genre. We also talk about why it's important to give even the most heroic characters a flaw or personal obstacle and for the first time ever on this show, I share a behind-the-scenes look at a personal obstacle I have in my own life. This was such an honest and deep conversation and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed interviewing K.J. Howe. In this episode K.J. and I discuss: Some of the challenges of writing a strong female character. How do you walk that line between over-masculinizing her or making her seem like a “token” character in a male-dominated world? Giving your characters limitations that help them feel more realistic on the page. Weaknesses, flaws, and the ability to recognize the limits of their power are important aspects of your characters that keep them from tipping over the edge into indestructible superhero territory. Weaving invisible disabilities into stories. Creating characters who are real, who struggle with real health and mental health issues, but who are not defined by their disabilities. The dynamics and tension between characters and how to bring their relationships to life for the reader. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. About the Author K.J. Howe is the executive director of Thrillerfest, the annual conference of International Thriller Writers. She became fascinated by the kidnap and ransom (K&R) world after meeting Peter Moore, a British computer consultant who became the longest-held hostage in Iraq and the only person to survive of the five men who were taken that day. The Freedom Broker is her debut novel. The Freedom Broker There are twenty-five elite kidnap and ransom (K&R) specialists in the world. Only one is a woman: Thea Paris. And she's the best in the business.Twenty years ago, a terrified young boy was abducted in the middle of the night by masked intruders while his sister watched, paralyzed with fear. Returned after a harrowing nine months with his captors, Thea's brother has never been the same. This life-shattering experience drove Thea to become what she is today: a world-class freedom broker. Most hostage-recovery work is done at the negotiation table, but when diplomacy fails, Thea leads Quantum Security International's black-ops team on highly sensitive rescue missions to political hot spots around the globe. Her childhood nightmare resurfaces when her oil magnate father, Christos Paris, is snatched from his yacht off Santorini on his sixtieth birthday, days away from the biggest deal of his career. The brutal kidnappers left the entire crew slaughtered in their wake, but strangely, there are no ransom demands, no political appeals, no prisoner release requests-just obscure and foreboding texts written in Latin sent from burner phones.Knowing the survival window for kidnap victims is small, Thea throws herself into the most urgent and challenging rescue mission of her life-but will she be able to prevent this kidnapping from destroying her family for good? Also, John has stated he's not a fan of Milton Berle, but in discussing this episode, you'll see he actually appreciates Berle in the role of Louie. So what is wrong with this episode?
