This episode of Planet Haliburton challenges Ford's affordable housing rationale for withdrawing 7400 acres from the Greenbelt and delivering over $8 billion in increased land value to a few well-connected developers. In addition, we look Ford's recent proposed changes to municipal planning rules and the campaigns fighting to save the Greenbelt from Doug Ford's “Tall and Sprawl” urban agenda. We are back! After a year-long hiatus, we are back at it and have some exciting news to share! First, we are creating a Community called The PAC! As many of you know we have been searching high and low for the Poly community in LA. Like, does it even exist!? If it does, we haven't found it yet. So we decided to create our own! The PAC will launch on August 2nd, so mark your calendars! We will share more details in later podcasts. Next, we started a Ko-fi page! Ko-fi is like Patreon but way better because it doesn't take out a huge percentage of the money that is donated. This is where you can support us and the podcast with a one time payment, or join one of our monthly membership tiers to support us on an on-going basis. This is also where you will be able to access the video portion of our podcast moving forward. Finally, we are really trying to grow this podcast and reach more people. Why? Because it's our mission to share our story and help to normalize Polyamory and other forms of Non-Monogamy. The best way to help us with this is to rate and review our podcast! If you do, we will send you our Resource List filled with book recommendations, tv shows, and other podcasts to explore! To get the Resource List, rate and review our podcast on apple podcast. Take a screenshot and email it to hello@polyplusamor.com and we will send you the resource list. Simple! This season we have started taste-testing non-alcoholic beverages! Specifically, drinks that are a substitute for alcohol. This week's tasty beverage is Recess and the flavor is Strawberry Rose. It's a pink cloud of deliciousness! Ok, so here's what we've been up to in the last year: Elisa worked 5 different jobs last year and is no longer in the restaurant industry. Yay! She is doing social media management full-time. Celebrated our 3-year wedding anniversary wine tasting in Paso Robles. Got snowed in while visiting Mike's Mom for Christmas! Mike got a new job! And sadly, his commute has not improved. We didn't date at all! I know, we said we were going to, but we didn't date. BUT Elisa has been dating this year! She shares a little about how it's going and what she is looking for, but a more detailed account will come in later episodes. We've been working on a HUGE project that is related to Polyamory that we are so excited about, but we aren't allowed to share the details just yet! As soon as we can you'll be the first to know! If you have any questions or would like to contact Mike and Elisa you can email them at hello@polyplusamor.com or message Elisa on Instagram. Before the COVID pandemic, remote schooling was uncharted territory. For many parents, in-person school seemed to normalize a hands-off approach to their children's learning. At the peak of the pandemic, school closures temporarily forced parents to take the lead on their children's education. While adapting to virtual learning has come with its challenges, it has also shed light on the importance of parental presence in academia. Today, host D-Rich is joined in conversation with five parent/educator panelists to discuss how to give children the education they deserve.  For those parents who have been homeschooling their kids this year, it has been all too easy to distinguish flaws in the school systems. Coming to this disappointing realization, many are eager to step into their roles as their children's advocate, but are unsure of how to help. As a parent, the best way to ensure that your child gets the most out of their education is to be actively involved. Communicate regularly with teachers, volunteer in after-school sports programs, or make sure that your child is completing all their assignments. However you choose to show your support, it is important to maintain proximity to your child's education all the way through adulthood.    • A list of all resources shared during the podcast can be found here: College Prep Professionals: https://www.yourcollegepro.com/ The Idea Farm Academy: https://ideafarmacademy.org/ Resource List: https://www.soullivestream.com/episodes/education-resource-list   Quotes • “We've heard the popularized term ‘learning loss' but nobody is popularizing the term ‘learning gain.' But I think the five of us know that students have probably learned and gained more than they've lost.” (23:34-23:56 | Dr. Rudy Jackson Jr.)  • “The pandemic truly showed where our schools are lagging and what schools are thriving. And that is what a lot of parents opened their eyes up to. I can't tell you how many parents have inboxed me on the daily asking me ‘what do you do to find schools? Because this isn't working for me.'” (30:39-03:57 | Cydnie Randolph) • “Check up on them, verify, and make sure they're doing what they said they did. Go to the avenues that the teacher has provided for you because my daughters go to an awesome school and the teachers set up the program, from A to B the kids knew exactly where to go. So always ask them ‘what did you do today?' And they can't say they did nothing because they always have something to do.”(34:23-34:49 | Amire Billups) • “What I realized is that the issue is that leadership and the vast majority of the educators don't live in the community so in some sense they don't see the value of the people in the community. So when scenarios come about parental and community involvement is the key to doing it better. Now you see schools with more community and parental liaison. And they are there because a lot of people see what parental voice and involvement does for schools in more affluent communities and they want the same type of opportunities for their children. (01:27:53-01:28:44 | Yoofi Dowell) • “ So many parents stop communicating and stop being involved once their child hits high school because they think they don't have to do anything else. But that's the most important time because now your child is on their way out to being an adult without having the support. So I think it's important to make sure that you can teach your child to be an advocate, but you're also an advocate for your child.” (01:33:44-01:34:26 | Lisa Rice)   Connect with Southern Soul Live Stream: • Want to listen to our next episode live? It’s no secret that the SARS-Cov-2 virus has wrecked disportioncate havoc among elderly residents of our country’s Long Term Care Facilities. Do the inner work of realizing the real worth your work provides and stand by it. 3. Show up consistently - As an artist, a lot of the value comes from authentically showing up everyday and attracting like-minded people towards you. 4. It's about service - As an entrepreneur, the work you do should be about lifting others through your work and coming from a place of service 5. Get back to your why - It can be hard to continue whenever you face setbacks and self-doubt. Whenever you do, stay on the path of your purpose and realize your work matters. Always experimenting, continually mixing, and matching. She is decidedly right-brained: expressive, emotive, and intuitive with a love for art and music. So naturally, she pursued an education in the Arts and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design.  Her design inspiration comes from art and the incredible randomness and variation in nature. Amna Rather is a Professional Designer, a CIFD Certified Floral Designer, and a WPIC Certified Wedding Planner. Today, Amna shares with us five key takeaways about running a boutique style business: 1. Have a plan - If possible, try to get educated in the field of design to arm yourself with knowledge before jumping right into business. 2. Learn your value - Make sure to price properly for your time and expertise. Remember that the work you do is unique and valuable. 3. Quality over quantity - Today, social media is a great way to get leads. So funnel in ideal clients by sticking to a system and only showcasing the works you want to do more of. 4. Focus on your own growth -. Business is a learning process. Enroll in online courses, get an apprenticeship, read books, listen to podcasts, or get a mentor. 5. Figure out your unique selling point -  It takes time. The more clients you work with, the more you get clarity on the things that you truly want to focus on. Calendly: https://calendly.com/info-8427/60 Today, we keep our focus on one commencement speech that has the power to change our perspective on success and failure – the “Fall Forward” Commencement Speech delivered by Denzel Washington at the University of Pennsylvania. Denzel Washington is an Academy Award-winning and Tony Award-winning actor and director. In this episode, Supriya shares with you some great outtakes we can all learn from his famous speech: 1. Take risks - As Nelson Mandela said: “There is no passion to be found playing small—in settling for a life that’s less than the one you’re capable of living.” 2. Embrace failure - First, you will fail at some point in your life. You will embarrass yourself. You will suck at something. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success. 3. Failure is better than not trying - As his wife said “To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.” Get out there and give it everything you've got. 4. Be open to life - Learn to accept new views and be open to new opinions. Be willing to say yes to opportunities no matter how frightened you are.
