He is a former soldier, one-time politician and a made-good businessman. Today, Glenn is Chair of Veterans For Peace Ireland and a Board Member of the Belfast Charitable Society. He remains an unapologetic Irish peace processor. In the second half of our interview I asked Glenn about how he as an Irishman was viewed/treated in the British army and Glenn recalls an incident when he was asked to leave a pub in England because he was Irish despite being a serving British soldier. Glenn shared his thoughts on the degree to which collusion occurred between British security forces and why he is of the opinion that collusion could not have been as rife as it is often alleged to be. The most important aspect of Glenn's story however is his eventual turning away from violence as a form of conflict resolution and complete disillusionment with violent means. Glenn talked us through the internal process of becoming a peace advocate and his work towards a peaceful Northern Ireland. Glenn describes his internal process of moving away from the mentality of military life and dealing with PTSD as a veteran of a bloody conflict. ***TIMSETAMPS*** 00:00 Soldiers from mainland UK- how good of an understanding did they have of the conflict in N.I 8:30 Did the mainland UK soldiers consider N.I people to be British & how Irish soldiers were treated in the british 13:15 British Army collusion w/ loyalists ??19:00 When did Glen start to become disillusioned with violence (after his uncle's horrific murder) 34:10 Being an independent thinker in the army38:10 Life post-Army44:00 PTSD 57:00 People's reaction when Glenn tells them he's a former soldier

Today, Glenn is Chair of Veterans For Peace Ireland and a Board Member of the Belfast Charitable Society. He remains an unapologetic Irish peace processor.I was  eager pick Glenn's brain about what it was like to grow up surrounded by the violence of "the troubles" conflict that began when he was a small child and particularly about the years of his youth spent in the army before he became completely disillusioned with violence after experiencing it's futility firsthand. Glenn told me about his childhood in a staunchly loyalist area of Belfast during one of Ireland's bloodiest times including when he was injured by a no-warning IRA bomb at the age of 5. We also spoke about a particularly horrific incident during the Bobby Sands riots when his schoolbus was petrol-bombed by a republican mob. Glenn would eventually join the British Army, a time in his life that he has made sure not to let define him and I was fascinated to get his insight on the soldiering of N.I.I asked about the daily realities of being a soldier during this period, what it feels like to be in a shootout with paramilitaries and how The British Army viewed the IRA and Loyalists. Glenn also explained the mindset of a trained soldier in terms of how they were trained to view their enemies/opponents.PART 2 COMING SOON ( We discussed more of Glenn's military days and how he would eventually become  entirely disillusioned with violence.)00:00 Intro & growing up in troubles-era Woodvale area6:05 Injured by IRA bomb at 5 years old13:25 How realistic was Irish reunification as a possibility in the minds of unionist people at the time?17:45 View of the RUC in the area? 20:35 How did Glen view British soldiers in the streets?22:55 GLEN'S SCHOOLBUS PETROL-B*MBED (day of Bobby Sands death) 26:16 How were loyalist paramilitaries viewed by the community in his area? 32:35 Joining British Army instead of Loyalist paramilitaries 43:00 Where was Glen 46:50 Shoot-outs with the IRA50:15 How competent did British troops consider the IRA 53:35 Any clashes w/ Loyalists 55:10 Soldiers from mainland UK- how good of an understanding did they have of the conflict in N.I

FOR years I used to gather up acorns and chestnuts and hazelnuts and little sycamore seeds and all manner of other seeds. My growing methods are fairly basic. I collected as many as I could and then planted them out in pots or growbags and let nature do the rest. I worked on the general assumption that if I planted a lot there was a greater chance that I would harvest a lot. I'm not talking of hundreds of seeds, by the way. Pocketfuls picked up on walks. The Falls Park has plenty of oak and chestnut trees. There are native trees also in the Waterworks, Colin Glen and Woodvale. Acres of broadleafs. And in all of our forests. The British Prime Minister's country residence at Chequers has great rowan trees. I got heaps of towan berries there.  They are always a wee bit trickier – like the tenant in Chequers. The seeds are contained in the little red berries but well worth the trouble. Unlike the tenant in Chequers.Campfire tales of a great manLAST week I was part of an online panel discussion on the life and times of escaped slave Frederick Douglass, his time in Ireland in the 1840s and the relevance of his message of hope and equality in today's world. The conversation was part of an ambitious and successful one day conference organised by the Irish Echo in New York. The event – The Big Irish Campfire (the title alone attracted me) – showcases Irish American organisations across the USA. All of the discussions were short – 30 minutes – so there was no time to bore those contributing or watching. The Echo staff – comhgairdheas to all involved – ran a tight ship.

Robert Billeaud, who has always been known as "Popie", is our guest. He serves as President of JB Mouton, the construction company established by his great-grandfather, John Berchman Mouton, in 1915. This interview gives the listener an opportunity to hear Popie speak of his love of building and the satisfaction the team at JB Mouton derives from creating structures built to withstand the test of time. As Popie tells clients, "You can pay for the building but it will always be ours!" One of 17 children raised by Lillie and Manning "Bozo" Billeaud, Popie was raised in a warm and loving family. While Bozo encouraged all of his children to follow their own path in life and "just get an education," Popie always loved the construction business. A graduate of Northeast Louisiana (now UL-Monroe), he studied Construction Management and joined his father at JB Mouton in 1976 as a Project Manager. The success of JB Mouton is attributable to its reputation for integrity and the ability to get the job done on time, if not early, with quality workmanship. Popie explained that building skills are such that you either have them or you don't, that you can't teach the innately given craft of building. So the company looks for team members with that gift and nurtures them and their talent, while always challenging the team to build the best building they can. Ongoing craft and safety training are important components of the company's culture. JB Mouton has built many of our community’s most iconic landmarks, schools, and churches such as the LITE Center, St. Pius Catholic Church and Elementary School, ESA’s lower school, CGI, the IberiaBank Tower in River Ranch, Moss BMW and Kia Sterling. They’ve also renovated St. John Cathedral, the Academy of the Sacred Heart, the Cajun Dome, Hub City Ford, IberiaBank Tower downtown, and St. Charles College in Grand Coteau. Chase Tower (formerly FNB Towers)The LITE CenterSt. Thomas More Football Stadium Surviving economic ups and downs and two World Wars has not been easy for the company, and the early days were tough. JB Mouton was originally a farmer who turned to carpentry to make a living. A jack of all trades, he learned the craft of building in early jobs he worked on, and in 1915 started building homes on his own. An early remodeling job JB Mouton took on was the home of Joshua Hays and Mary Laboye Town, the parents of A. Hays Town. Town was only 14 years old at the time and drew up the architectural plans for the remodel. He was so talented that he was hired by JB Mouton to draw up other plans and Town would recount later that his first commission ever made was paid by JB. By the 1930s, JB Mouton's sons, Bill and Francis, joined the firm and they began working commercial construction. U. S involvement in WWII resulted in the rationing of supplies so the firm put its work on hold with Francis going into the service and Bill taking their equipment to Fort Polk to be of service to the military. By 1949, Popie's father, Bozo, went to work at JB Mouton with his granddad and uncles. Commercial construction projects were in high demand and one of Bozo's first jobs was a contemporary A. Hays Town building on the airbase in New Iberia. The ensuing years led to the building of Pecan Island High School, Crowley High, Carencro High, and remodel/additions to Lafayette High, Woodvale, Alleman, Comeaux High, J. W. Faulk, and S. J. Montgomery. In the mid-1960's, JB Mouton added two stories to UL's Dupre Library, and Bozo joked that no books got wet in the process! The firm also built Lafayette's airport in the early 1960's and remodeled it in the late 1980's. From 1973 to 1975, JB Mouton worked on the construction of FNB Tower, now known as Chase Tower, designed by Jerry Gossen and Don O'Rourke. It is still the tallest building in Lafayette, LA. This iconic project was the first time that JB Mouton utilized the now commonly used design-assist-build process,

Bump In Burger is located in Woodvale in the northern suburbs of Perth in Western Australia. Owner Brad Wesson who many know as one of the names behind Soundworks Direct Touring, teamed up with professional chef wiz Christopher Swayne to launch their own burger suburban haven. For those who don't know, Brad's own journey in the self employment world has seen him running the music touring company Soundworks Touring for over a decade. More recently merging with David Haley of Direct Touring to form Soundworks Direct Touring, Brad has built a global network of contacts, talent and insights that have continued to build his own knowledge and skill sets. These years slogging it out all over the world has now positioned him to be able to 'take that plunge' and launch his own burger joint, even though Brad has had no experience himself in hospitality since being a kitchen hand in his teens.Since the launch of Bump in Burger in February 2018, the team has seen dramatic success in their local area and through Brad's wider network has attracted attention globally with international musicians stopping in for a meal when coming through Perth on tour. Their real impact however has been through their efforts in contributing to their local area, ensuring that the suburb of Woodvale feels that Bump in Burger is their own. It's a collective project that has formed a passionate loyalty with many regulars coming in each week to grab their favourite specials before they sell out, which happens often. This is a great chat where we talk about the build up to launch, pushing it all over the line (with some encouragement from Brad's wife), how they have managed to achieve what they have in 2018 and their efforts to package up and strengthen the business as quickly as possible. There's lots to come for Brad and the Bump in Burger business rolling into 2019, so if you're ever in Perth be sure to head north and grab a bite. What did you get out of this episode? Here’s what I learnt;1. What's Your Back Up Plan? - Bump In Burger came from Brad wondering if his Touring business ever went away, what would his back up plan be. Not all of us may be thinking of a second business to create to protect the first, however sometimes a solid fall back is a great way to take the pressure off and provide you with options and flexibility. Even better if your back up plan becomes just as successful!2. Pull Your Finger Out - Brad's wife said it best, "Let's get moving. There is not enough urgency". This has been a common theme with Self Starter. Sometimes being stuck in the concept and idea leaves you missing your window of opportunity due to waiting for the perfect set of circumstances to get started. Brad knew that it was getting to the point where he just needed to open the doors and work the rest out as they went. In this case, Brad's wife, having the outside perspective, was the one to smack some sense into him!3. Make the community feel like it's theirs - Brad is nailing it when it comes to advocacy. He said that his aim for Bump in Burger was to make it feel like the community owned it. As a result he has seen faithful supporters jumping in online when any unfair criticism is displayed. Large corporations pay huge dollars to create campaigns that breed this level of advocacy. Brad seen the same results from his grass roots, community entrenched approach and his reputation in how he conducts business. Bump In Burger is something that the local area can truly be proud of.4. Become a People Person - I understand that we might not all be social butterflies, but we should always be open to create new relationships and nurture existing ones. This can have obvious business advantages but it also has a great impact on your own self development. This point has a lot packed into it, but Brad's approach of 'everyone is a potential friend of business partner' is a fantastic way to approach life in general.5. Don't play with amateurs. Recruit Pros. - Brad is a firm believer of investing in himself and others. The old saying of 'you get what you pay for' rings true. Paying a premium for professionals such as an accountant, book keeper, staff, contractors, consultants etc will see your return on investment a lot quicker and lift the bar on your own expectations, operation and vision. Surround yourself with excellence and don't hesitate to pay for it.6. Package it and put a bow on it - One of the first things that Brad did was look to package up his business and scrutinise all facets of operation. Normally this happens when you're looking to sell up, but Brad's approach was to do this early so that he could identify any bias, bad habits and get a professional independent assessment on everything he is doing. This is a great way to remove the emotion, have a healthy detatchment and identify not only the areas of strength but the areas of opportunity.Follow Bump in Burger via Main Website | Facebook | Instagram |Location – Shop 4, Woodvale Boulevard Shopping Center, 931 Whitfords Ave, Woodvale WA 6026
