Our studio chat with Kieron (Digital Director at Blackwells, part of the Waterstones group of booksellers) had a number of firsts... Not only the first podcast of 2024 (Happy New Year to one and all!) but also the first time that Georgia and I had been given gifts. In our prep for the studio session Kieron had asked us what were the last three books we'd read. He used this to predict a book for each of us and wrapped them for us to give in the studio! Utterly thoughtful, but more importantly gets to the heart of Kieron's focus upon data AND intuition. In our conversation we talk about the history of Blackwells (surely one of the most famous longstanding and academic booksellers, now a part of the Waterstones group) and some of the dynamics of the book trade online. We discuss learning and the ongoing quest for information and knowledge, and the vital role of staff in retail. This is the origin of the "really different" of our title - how to engage staff with knowledge, skills, passion and individuality rather than falling into the trap of homogeneity. There is so much to learn here about individuality, passion and invention in retail - our thanks to Kieron for being so open with us. --  Run time: 53 minutes   INFORMATION: [

This episode continues a short series on the psychology of writing, looking at the stories we tell ourselves when we tell stories. Here I look at the many ways in which we might tell ourselves we're not writing the right kind of story, what we write isn't proper fiction, and we're not proper novelists. I talk a bit about the uncomfortable feeling when our intuitive mental image of what a novel or a novelist looks like doesn't match up to what we're writing or who we think we are. And, of course - because I'm not about to leave you hanging - I suggest some ways through, some strategies by which we might start to explore those feelings and challenge them in a lasting way. In this episode we continue a short series on the psychology of writing. What stories do we tell ourselves when we tell stories? Writing a novel is a long business, and at some point, you're going to hit snags. Your enthusiasm or confidence might lag. Different writers typically have different points where they hit 'the Wall'. In this episode I continue our short series about the psychology of writing. What stories do we tell ourselves when we tell stories? I investigate the idea of expectation - the awareness of an audience out there, who will ultimately evaluate the novel you're working on. How might it impact your ability to write? How might your relationship to that putative audience shift over your career? And what kind of interventions can you make if your relationship with your imagined readers becomes unhelpful? Here are a couple of novels by authors featured on today's episode that I think you'll really like. This episode is the first in a short series about the psychology of writing. What stories do we tell ourselves when we tell stories? How can we write more, write better. and be a little bit happier when we do those things? Drawing on months of conversations with neuroscientists, psychologists, psychiatrists and nearly 200 episodes of podcast, I try to zero in on some answers. More importantly, I give some practical suggestions, based on studies, of what you can do to get the most of writing. Later episodes have contributions from previous guests as I have a look at the mindset side of writing, the thought distortions that can creep in, and how to keep morale up when you run into trouble. He shares his initial overconfidence and how he worked through setbacks to forge a career writing in various universes, such as Star Wars, Elementary and most recently Stranger Things. He explains the process of pitching and negotiating with the creators of a show, the differences between writing original work and licensed novels, and how he uses routines to keep going and get his work done. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to know: - how can I write novelisations of existing TV shows, films or video games? - what's the process for pitching and writing a licensed novel? - how can I keep writing on bad days? - how can I plan my novel and still be creative? In this episode I chat to celebrated SF & Fantasy author Emma Newman about fae, fabulism, fear and finding futures. Emma talks about her early love of stories, why she stopped writing for a decade, and how she got over it. We chat about faeries and patriarchy, inventing future technologies, and writing good characters who manage mental health challenges like anxiety or post-natal depression. We also cover roleplaying (because I will take literally any excuse to gab about RPGs) and ways to beat procrastination and creative fear. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to know: - how can I get writing again if I've stopped? - how can I create believable new technologies in Science Fiction? - how can I use SFF to explore themes? - can I turn my roleplaying sessions into a book? I really enjoyed this one! If you'd like to check out some of Emma's work, here's a - not even exhaustive! - list of her novels. What's the point of writing when there's so much suffering in the world? When there might not even *be* a world in not so many years time? Is it indulgent? Pointless? A form of denial? Why write at the end of the world? This is an unscripted, unplanned 'writing ramble' episode where I just talk about what's on my mind. I've been struggling a bit, and so I talk about that, in the context of how horrendous the world seems at the moment. Don't expect any neat conclusions in this one. I'm just working through some difficult things, and relating them to writing, which I'm finding it hard to do. Today I chat with Martin Lotze, neuroscientist at the University of Greifswald, about his research into the brains of writers. Martin has researched how the minds of writers and non-writers operate, using fMRI scans to observe which areas of the brain are activated during the writing process. His fascinating work demonstrates that wholly different parts of the brain are used by experienced writers and novices when undertaking creative writing. I ask him about how he came to study this area, discover many of my assumptions are wrong, and ask him the implications of his findings for writers like us. Nick Harkaway is the author of several novels, most recently GNOMON, set in a near-future Britain where everything is recorded, monitored and shared. In this wide-ranging chat we cover everything from writing from multiple viewpoints, to reader expectation, to knowing when to stop and fix something vs pressing on to the end of the draft. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to know: - how can I manage reader expectations? - what are some useful ways to think about story structure? - should I finish my first draft before editing or revise as I go? - how can I turn big SF ideas into stories? This episode is an unscripted, unedited talk from me about creative writing and fiction and motivation. So I decided to record this one evening a few days ago, to get out a few things about writing, and keeping going with your writing, that had been on my mind. (I'm aware that the language I use in this one is quite florid bordering on Biblical - just so you know, I'm fine, I'm not about to start spewing prophecies or anything. Just being poetic!) Folding together some thoughts from my most recent chats with authors, I ask: why are you writing? And I try to formulate the difference between writing for the approval of others, and writing for mischief. We discuss his comedy SF novel BATTLESTAR SUBURBIA and its bracing mix of humour and barbed political comedy. He also drops some serious data about the top 100 bestselling books in the UK last year, breaking them down by author and genre to reveal what books are on the up, and those which remain perilously tricky to sell. Welcome back to Looks and Books with Cat & Olly, and to episode eight of our 'Reading is Fundamental' Book Club! When we planned out our content schedule, we knew that we wanted to dedicate an episode to LFW, therefore we knew that we needed a fashion-related book club pick. When we came across a murder mystery set against a 1930s haute couture backdrop, we thought, what could possibly go wrong? As it turns out, many, many things. Tune in this week to hear us catch up on the last two weeks of our lives, toot and boot the THIRTY looks from the first two episodes of Strictly, and ultimately rip into an uneventful, misogynistic and racist book that we couldn't recommend less. At least we can't be accused of sitting on the fence. NB: our next 'Reading is Fundamental' Book Club read is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, which we'll be discussing in two weeks' time. In today's episode I look at the first page of a listener's story and suggest ways of making it better. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to know: - how can I get some tips for editing my novel? - how can I write a great first line? - how should I describe my characters? - what makes good dialogue? - how can I think about the flow of a sentence? If you'd like to submit your work for a future show, you can do so via my website, here: http://www.timclarepoet.co.uk/ If you'd like to support me, please buy my novel, THE HONOURS. It's temporarily unavailable on Wordery, so here's a link to wonderful UK indie bookshop, Mr B's Emporium, who ship worldwide: https://mrbsemporium.com/shop/books/the-honours/ Finally, you can support the running of the show directly via my Ko-fi page: http://ko-fi.com/B0B17913 And here's today's extract (PS - I realise now 'against' is a two-syllable word - oops!): THE DENTIST (by Morgan) Joy wore a short, black, cotton dress, her hair tied back in a blond ponytail. Around her neck was a thin, golden chain with her star sign, a ram’s head. I had given it to her when we first met. I wore an open-necked, pale blue shirt under a dark-blue suit. It brought out the color of my eyes. We were celebrating my first proper television role. The restaurant terrace shimmered gold, the candle flames restless in the breeze from the ocean. The crashing waves drowned out the piano tinkling through the speakers. "I'm proud of you, honey," said Joy. “A speaking role.” "Let’s hope I don’t develop a stutter.” "Aw, that would be adorable!" said Joy, pinching my cheek. "Ow!" "Oh, sorry, honey, is that the bad side?" "It's okay," I said, "I'm just minding it, so it'll go away sooner." "You know..." started Joy. Our starters arrived, ending the conversation. I had curried oysters, Joy had asparagus salad. My mouth throbbed. I’d almost gotten used to it. I was pretty sure the tooth was rotten, that the cure would be worse than the disease. Lost in these thoughts I bit down on a mouthful and a sharp pain jolted my head. There was a hard lump in my mouth. I held my cheek and went to the bathroom. At the mirror I picked a cracked and rotten piece of tooth from my mouth. It was laced with blood and the smell of seafood.
