We're back after a little break, and there's loads to chat about. Having just returned from a trip to NYC, Matthew discusses New York Fashion Week highlights with Eni (who also gives us some tips for the forthcoming LFW). Last week happened to be a big one for the downtown music scene, with both Fcukers and The Dare dropping their debut EP and album, respectively. Do they live up to the hype? Why do these ex-indie kids love dancing now? And are we allowed to call it “indie sleaze”? Press play to find out.

In this episode, Lauren Sanders is speaking with fellow LFW researcher, Renato Wolf about the issue of determining where legal obligations lie in the conduct of attacks, carried out by AWS. In particular they delve into his research about the Art 57 term ‘those who plan or decide attacks' to see how that maps onto AWS, how that features in the AWS debate and what needs to be thought about in operationalising this legal obligation.Renato Wolf is an international lawyer who served as a legal adviser to the Swiss Armed Forces for nearly ten years. He was deployed to Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and then spent two years working as a legal advisor to the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Unit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. He holds a Bachelor of Law and a Master of Law with a specialization in international law from the University of Bern, Switzerland, as well as a Master of Arts in War in the Modern World from the King's College London. He is currently a research fellow at the University of Queensland and finalizing his PhD on the legal review of autonomous weapons.

# Front Matter Today Lance takes a look at the question: Why did God Create Humans to be sent to hell? He unpacks three answers to this question and explores the ramifications of the metaphysics of the will. ## This is a serious Topic - the reality is that this question touches on aspect of our worldview that inform us on the very nature of God's goodness. The question of the nature of the will, though central to this issue, is nevertheless used by us to understand God's relationship to the problems of evil. And it can be an upsetting experience to have these assumption challenged. ## This Topic is surrounded by Mystery from every view point. - We have to walk a line here that puts us between two extremes when we talk about this topic: the "complete" answer, that leaves nothing to mystery, and the mysterious answer, that leaves it all to mystery. The bible is somewhere in between these two extremes. - But every approach to this question claims some sort of mystery at one point or another. This is not bad on the face of it but it is a dangerous place to be: to claim mystery where the Word of God has spoken or to claim revelation where the Word of God has not Spoken are two errors that we must avoid. # Three Approaches to this question ## 1) He didn't. He took a chance that we would go to hell by giving us [[Libertarian Free Will]] and discovered after we chose where we were headed. (Open Theism) - This is the most logically complete and consistent viewpoint in terms of faithfulness to LFW. Given LFW as a presupposed non negotiable this is the conclusion that one must come to in order to be truly faithful to LFW. - John Frame has a good quote on this in his Systematic Theology: > As with open theists Pinnock and Rice, libertarians tend to make their view of free will a nonnegotiable, central truth, with which all other theological statements must be made consistent. Libertarian freedom then takes on a kind of paradigmatic or presuppositional status. But as we have seen, libertarianism is unscriptural. It would be bad enough merely to assert libertarianism contrary to the Bible. But making it a central truth or governing perspective is very dangerous indeed. An incidental error can be corrected without much trouble. But when such an error becomes a major principle, a grid through which all other doctrinal statements are filtered, then a theological system is in grave danger of shipwreck. ### Why is this view wrong? - This view is simply wrong for several reasons. - First: It is simply miles away from *quite* a few basic biblical doctrines such as the sovereignty of God, the omniscience of God, and the nature of time itself regarding God. - Second: This view relies and assumes that LFW is an nonnegotiable central truth. But this is untenable considering the Bibles take on the nature of the will. Not only does the Bible never affirm LFW in a few spots it explicitly denies core aspect of LFW. And the other doctrines conflict with LFW on a deep level. ## 2) He didn't. While He knew how we would choose he nevertheless did not choose for us and gave us Libertarian Free Will. How that works in light of God's Sovereignty is a mystery but we have perfect freedom to choose either hell or heaven. (Classical Arminianism) - This is the most common view of faithful Christians' that nevertheless cannot get on board with the conclusions of the Calvinist. - This is also the view that can be follow throughout history all the way back to the early church fathers. - It must be noted that even though this view, married as it is to LFW, can be found in the early Christian writers it would be a an error to declare LFW to be true based on that fact. If that were true then it would prove too much. Read Justine Martyr, Origin, and many others to a smaller degree and you will find beliefs that are simply counter to the scriptures. - Further, and the reason we find error in the early Christians,

Read Justine Martyr, Origin, and many others to a smaller degree and you will find beliefs that are simply counter to the scriptures. - Further, and the reason we find error in the early Christians, the assumption is commonly (in keeping with the Roman tradition) to see them as more pure believers in their worldview assumption. But if we read them with an eye on worldview we see that they were heavily influenced but the cultures that they were in. LFW was a common pagan philosophical belief in that day that the early believers used as a crutch even though it was not found in the scriptures.### Why is this view wrong?- For much the same reason as the Open theists. But, thankfully, this view seeks to be faithful to the scriptures overall. There are distortions on secondary issues but it is no where near as bad.## 3) He did so for his Glory. We might have Free Agency but God ordained nevertheless that there would be some created that would freely choose to reject him and some that would freely choose to accept him. He created some as examples of his grace and some as examples of his wrath. (Soft Deterministic Calvinism)- This view is difficult for many to accept on the face of it as it does not allow for LFW which is commonly used in the worldviews of today to alleviate most issues pertaining to the problems of evil. So, removing that possible explanation, and especially replacing it with the Glory of the Lord being the only visible purpose for this terrifying reality, causes most people to chafe and reject this out of hand.- Yet there are issues with rejecting this view point: - The Bible is shot through with examples and references to God's complete Sovereignty. - This view, when worded this way, is a literal word for word quotation of Romans 9. Further, given the meaning of the words here and the contextual meaning of the same words in Romans 9, the Bible makes this same statement. And to add insult to injury Romans 9 itself directly invalidates LFW, the cornerstone of Open Theism and the crutch of Arminianism.- To demand that LFW must be the solution to the problem's of evil also faces some deep issue: - Such a demand reveals a heart that does not value the glory of God as much as it values the glory of man. - How can I make such an assertion? - When someone asks this question it is common to use LFW to settle their heart on this matter. And so I have seen quite a few people draw comfort from LFW. But assume that you used God's glory as the sole reason and the idea that was supposed to bring comfort to the heart. Would it? Not for most. It would bring consternations and indignation. But this is a *major* problem in and of itself and reveals that we value our own LFW over God's glory. What are the stakes here? People going to hell. This is terrifying. But when LFW is used to justify God and hell people are calmed. This means the reality of hell is acceptable *as long as* we also get LFW. But if LFW was not true and the sole reason for hell was God's glory this would be an outrage. So here we have it: mans heart wants its own power and cares not for the glory of the Lord.

In this episode of the Dunamis EQ Leadership Podcast, we sit down with Lavar Thomas, who shares his journey towards emotional intelligence and international leadership experiences. Lavar reflects on a difficult time in high school where he faced rejection from all colleges he applied to due to low SAT scores. This experience left him feeling defeated and uncertain about his future. Lavar also felt failed by the educational system and struggled to navigate it. Emotions such as rejection, the need for external validation, and the constant need to prove himself consumed him. However, Lavar's perspective began to change when he realized that his feelings were tied to a negative narrative he had created about not being good enough and being perceived as a threat due to his background and where he grew up. Through maturity, therapy, and mentorship, Lavar started understanding and articulating his emotions, which marked the beginning of his journey towards emotional intelligence. During the episode, Lavar shares a transformative experience of a student from Chicago who unexpectedly had a layover in Egypt. Witnessing the pyramids and seeing camels passing by overwhelmed the student and made Lavar realize the power of having a vision and pushing through setbacks. Lavar's own desire to go to Egypt aligns with the student's experience and solidifies his belief that his struggles and failures were leading up to the moment of being able to help others from similar backgrounds. Lavar also discusses his decision to join the Peace Corps, inspired by a conversation with an advisor who had done the Peace Corps in Jordan. He saw this opportunity as a unique way to break away from societal expectations, find his purpose, and become the person he was meant to be. Through volunteer work in Rwanda, Lavar started an organization called LFW, aiming to make international experiences accessible to other black men and expand their perspective as global citizens. The episode explores the training process for Peace Corps volunteers, the importance of on-the-ground experience, and Lavar's involvement in an international experience in leadership development program for young black men. Lavar emphasizes the importance of authenticity, problem-solving, and adding value as a leader. He believes that everyone has the potential to be a leader, and the seeds for leadership are within every follower. In addition, Lavar discusses his own personal growth through therapy, the importance of belief in one's worth, and the impact it has on leadership. He shares how his self-concept changed dramatically, understanding that no test, job, or title can define his value. Lavar's experiences have shaped his leadership style and have led him to create impact by shifting narratives and helping others show up more boldly. This insightful episode of the Dunamis EQ Leadership Podcast highlights the power of emotional intelligence, international experiences, and personal growth in becoming effective leaders. Lavar Thomas' journey serves as an inspiration to listeners, revealing the potential within each individual to overcome hurdles and create positive change in their communities and the world. This week Anna Grace is joined by guest host, Taylor McGowan. We cover the shows you need to know from London and Milan Fashion Week FW23. While the overall vibe of most of the runway shows were drab (think brown, sellable workwear- boring!), a few managed to catch our eye. Some heritage fashion brands are bringing in young designers to breathe new life into these old houses. Daniel Lee makes his debut at Burberry- spoiler alert, we love it! Over at Roberto Cavalli, Fausto Puglisi delivered all of the Cavalli essentials- sex appeal, animal print and denim. Plus, did Filippo Grazioli at Missoni just make the must have dress of the season? One of the best part about London Fashion Week is that is always shines a light on smaller, less known designers. Johanna Prav delivered a forward thinking, utilitarian collection for the modern woman who bikes to work. LFW also showcased several Ukrainian designers, like Frolov who recently dressed Beyonce for the Atlantis hotel in Dubai's secret opening event. When discussing free will we see folks really focused on the libertarian/non-causal free will, even within this stream where we start to talk about different types of free will we can see all of us inadvertently shift back.... As brands rethink traditional runway, the Spring 2021 catwalk featured reimagined digital shows. Many found savvy ways to show off their latest designs, deflecting the spotlight away from the absence of physical showsThe recent runway shows didn't create as much engagement as usual, with the all-digital LFW seeing 55% less buzz on social media than in January, according to Launchmetrics. On the upside, digital formats and the lack of travel across the industry proved to promote sustainable efforts and reduction of CO2 emissions. So is there a sweet spot between the two? Alex Badia, Style Director at WWD, joins us on the podcast to discuss the future of digital shows and tells us the top trends from the Spring 2021 runway shows that you should be taking note of. It is not very often that we get to hear an agents view on models health. Many times people compare models to athletes. Needing to be strict with their diets and vigorous exercise regime, a short career in a high pressured environment. Mental health is known to suffer from daily comparisons of high standards and rejection. In the last of the LFW special season, I speak to Karen Dimond, owner and director of Models 1, a leading modelling agency in the heart of London. Karen speaks very openly acknowledging the press that agents get is absolutely dreadful - especially during London Fashion Week because there's a huge spotlight on models. Highlighting there's always going to be a front page picture of a slim model who has been shot at an angle to look incredibly thin, which then becomes something which is being celebrated, but the reality is you do have to be strong and healthy to be a model. As an independent research and technology organisation, TWI Ltd has recently invented a highly disruptive, new sub-surface machining technique called CoreFlow™. As soon as MTD magazine heard the term ‘Sub-Surface Machining’, we were intrigued, so here Senior Project Leader, Vito Di Pietro takes us through this ground-breaking innovation. This new solid-state process is an evolution from friction stir welding (FSW) and friction stir channelling (FSC) that allows for sub-surface networks of channels to be machined into two-dimensional or three-dimensional monolithic parts in a single manufacturing step. These channels can then be used for applications such as heat exchange. Figure 1 shows a cooling plate demonstrator recently produced in aluminium (AA6082-T6) with infrared thermal imaging evidencing the circulation of liquid coolant. At the forefront of solid-phase friction welding and processing technology, TWI has been innovating welding research and development since the 1960s, responding to industry needs and providing consultancy and support to all industry sectors. Providing everything from advice on component design, process selection and quality issues, troubleshooting, feasibility and pre-production trials, application, and prototype equipment development, TWI has been responsible for many key innovations and developments in solid-phase joining. The most notable examples are friction stir welding (FSW), invented at TWI in 1991, and the development of linear friction welding (LFW) into a mature joining process for turbine blades. The uptake of FSW has been very rapid, especially when compared with other innovations in materials joining. First demonstrated in the laboratory in late 1991, by 1995 it was in industrial production fabricating panels for refrigeration purposes. Many other applications rapidly followed including its use in launch vehicles, railcars, airframes, automotive structures, heat sinks and ships. FSW uses a rotating tool designed to generate frictional heating to soften the adjoining metal to a point where it can be viscoplastically deformed and displaced around the tool (Figure 2). The FSW tool traverses the joint line between two parts, where its stirring action enables the formation of a solid-state weld. This has revolutionised welding of aluminium alloys due to the sub-melting point processing conditions, which prevent solidification cracking and porosity formation while reducing distortion and minimising the loss of parent material properties. The resulting joint has excellent tensile strength and fatigue and fracture properties. Derived from FSW, Friction Stir Channelling (FSC) is an innovative solid-state process that integrates sub-surface networks within metal structural elements. The original FSC concept was patented by Rajiv S. Mishra in 2005. In his work, poor material consolidation during FSW was deliberately promoted to produce a continuous void along the tool path. However, despite its great potential, this technology has not yet been adopted by industry, mainly by not fulfilling the required repeatability, surface finish or design flexibility. TWI has recently invented and patented a new stationary shoulder variant of FSC (SSFSC) which has overcome many drawbacks of conventional FSC. As shown in Figure 3, a stationary shoulder is employed to confine the nugget of viscoplastic material, limiting the flow of material extracted by the probe. With the appropriate rotation direction, the geometrical features of the probe causes part of the nugget material to be conveyed into the shoulder. The material extracted is then re-directed towards a series of vents in the shoulder and expelled. As the tool assembly traverses along a pre-defined path, the process of extracting the material leads to the formation of a closed channel within the workpiece and the production of extruded wire. The four main stages in the process are shown in Figure 4. The cycle is initiated by plunging the rotating probe into the plate and once the probe reaches its target plunge depth, the machine initiates its traverse motion along the workpiece, the plasticised material is conveyed upwards by the rotating probe threads, into the shoulder and then expelled as extruded material. This subtraction of material leads to the formation of a closed sub-surface channel. Applications for CoreFlow™ CoreFlow™ already looks set to find revolutionary applications in the manufacture of heat exchangers, cooling systems, integrated fluid management and the light-weighting of structures. Heat exchangers can be found everywhere from cars to aeroplanes, but also communication platforms, satellites and ships. The automotive opportunities In the electric vehicle (EV) market, there is an increasing need for faster-charging rates, improved speed and autonomy, increased power density, and a general ambition to make EVs affordable. These expectations are resulting in increased heat generation and are driving a collective demand for low cost, compact, lightweight and efficient heat transfer solutions. Battery packs release heat during charging and driving due to electric resistivity. This is aggravated for higher intensity charges and discharges. Currently, serpentine pipe heat exchangers are incorporated inside the battery pack to prevent excessive temperatures that could lead to cell chemical degradation or battery derating. These systems take up space, add weight and manufacturing complexity to the vehicle, therefore CoreFlow represents a huge opportunity to solve these challenges by manufacturing battery trays with integral cooling channels built into the metallic structure. Another example is the thermal management of electric motors. These components heat-up mainly due to the resistivity of the copper windings and eddy-current losses, this excess heat is detrimental to motor performance. Cooling systems are usually incorporated into the casing based on natural or forced convection of air or liquid. CoreFlow™ could be used to incorporate channels in thin-walled motor casings for active cooling, reducing weight and improving performance. The aerospace industry is another potential beneficiary. Aircraft engine cooling is usually performed by heat exchangers located between the engine and the nacelle, cooling engine oil using air or fuel. These components disrupt airflow, create drag and decreasing thrust. With CoreFlow™, cooling networks could be incorporated directly in the nacelles. The same applies to hydraulic cooling systems that could be replaced by integrated CoreFlow™ manifolds rather than hoses and pipes. Currently, FSW is one of the most promising technologies for manufacturing heat exchangers. Their complex geometry currently forces engineers to split production in two stages (see Figure 5). Typically, a housing is machined from a solid block of metal that incorporates cooling features and channels to circulate the cooling fluid through the part. In the second stage, a lid is joined and friction welded to isolate the cooling channels from the environment. FSW has become the most effective solution for this process. CoreFlow™ has overcome these challenges by machining the cooling channels in a single step. By creating a channel below the surface of a structure, CoreFlow™ provides an integrated method to vent heat from a part without having to add pipework or other complex and costly solutions. This creates a simpler, more efficient manufacturing method, using approximately 20% less raw material, producing almost 80% less waste (in form of wire), and weighing less than its conventional counterpart (see Figure 5). This new technique provides heat reduction and can be used for the production of anti-icing features on wings and flight control surfaces for aircraft. The technique can also be used to create lubrication networks for hydraulics, to embed instruments into a structure, to perform cable management or simply for light-weighting. Outside of transport, CoreFlow™ can be used for cooling data servers, communication infrastructures and radar installations or to manage the thermal load in manufacturing equipment – opportunities are huge. Aluminium AA6082-T6 and AA1050-H14 plates with a thickness from 5 to 50mm have been successfully processed and the application has already moved on to flat and tubular demonstrators (see Figure 6 below) that feature channels along linear and helical trajectories. The demonstrators passed both leak and pressure testing, with leak rates well below 10-8 mbar∙L/s and pressure up to 9 bar. The development of CoreFlow™ In the last few years, CoreFlow™ has been demonstrated and further developed by TWI. Trials have been conducted on an ESAB SuperStir™ machine (Figure 7) with a purpose-built FSW gantry fitted with TWI’s proprietary stationary shoulder system. The probe used is a cylindrical proprietary cobalt-nickel-chromium alloy threaded probe with a diameter of 9.8mm and a length of 7mm. The shoulder has a flat surface, a 30mm outer diameter and a bore diameter of 10mm. The shoulder features four orthogonally-positioned, radial vents with 3mm diameter holes that increase to 5mm to ease the expulsion of plasticised material. The probe and shoulder are usually designed specifically for the material and application. In Figure 8, an aluminium AA6082-T6 test piece with a thickness of 15mm has been processed with CoreFlow™ using two main process parameters; traverse and rotation speed. In Figure 9, the superficial appearance of samples produced using rotational speeds varying from 400 to 1200rev/min and traverse speeds from 25 to 150min/min are shown. Fully-consolidated ceilings are achieved when combining low traverse speeds with low rotation speeds whilst increasing the rotation speed resulted in intermittent surface voiding; an effect more noticeable for higher traverse speeds tested. All channels feature a flat bottom surface with well-defined edges, coincident with the probe outline (Figure 10). The channel produced is fully consolidated and is 9.89mm wide with a maximum height of 2.53mm and a minimum ceiling thickness of 4.46mm. From the micrograph, it is also possible to appreciate how the anisotropic grain orientation in the parent material, caused by the plate sample rolling process, transforms into a fully recrystallized microstructure in the channel ceiling due to the stirring action of the probe. The material extruded in the form of wire can be used as feedstock for processes such as wire-based additive manufacturing or even welding wire. CoreFlow™ is capable of extruding an unlimited length of wire from a plate or a pipe. This process, labelled ForgeWire, is of great interest for producing a spool of wire from materials with poor extrudability, such as alloys of aluminium or magnesium. Wire manufacturers or additive manufacturing process developers now have a quick option for producing wire with tailored chemical composition and from experimental alloy formulations (e.g. Aluminium-Lithium or Aluminium-Scandium), potentially even directly from the rolled product or cast billets. TWI is continuing to develop CoreFlow™ by defining guidelines for use with different materials while working on a range of industrially-relevant demonstrators. With a variety of applications having already been proposed, this new friction technique is potentially the next paradigm shift forward in manufacturing technology.
No sensible discussion about body image can start without an understanding of Social Comparison Theory (SCT). We all compare ourselves, whether it is a physical trait, psychological quality, talent on finical value to others. The SCT looks at the pattern of those comparisons and the impact this has on our wellbeing and very importantly how this can affect our body image. In this special LFW episode, I invite psychologist and author, Kimberly Wilson on stage to discuss the social comparison theory and body image. Modelling and working in fashion comes with a lot of opportunities, but the tax young people pay for that is working in an industry where absolute strangers can critique your body. All day. Every day. In this kind of environment, our natural tendency to social comparison gets dialled up, which can put stain on relationships and the risk of self-objectification is real, affecting low self-esteem. Kimberly discusses the steps to take to help re address your values and how to create an anchor for your self esteem. This episode was recorded live at the LFW, Be Well Collective Wellbeing Summit 2020. For more information follow: @sarahannmacklin | @be_well_collective www.sarahannmacklin.com

This week on Let’s Fix Work I am going to be talking about goals and goal setting. The topic is timely because I’m heading down to Atlanta to meet with my business coach, Jesse Itzler. I'm going to stand in front of him and my entire cohort of about 100 and I'm going to talk about why I didn't achieve my fourth quarter goals in 2018. Yes, it’s going to be hard. But, I am all about owning up to why I didn’t make things work and learning the steps needed to fix what wasn’t working. In this episode, I share how and why I began working with Jesse. One of the things you will hear is about how Jesse coaches his clients using a system that prioritizes goals while focusing on your health, work, family, and creativity. When I began working with Jesse, I also wanted to layer that approach of prioritizing goals on top of a time management tracking tool and really learn how to spend my time doing the things that would move my life and my business forward. I wanted to put myself first. At the beginning of the year, I took a page out of the corporate playbook and I got my head out of my ass. Once I started to have boundaries, I started to have goals. I began setting standards for myself and 2019 came into focus. I've been doing more writing, I've been doing more speaking and I've been doing more business development. But yet, I've been missing some goals because I'm human. Today, I also share insights and lessons about the best laid plans, because I’ve learned that even when you map it out and you create rock-solid systems, life happens. If you want to hear about my successes and failures with goal setting, the importance of putting yourself first, and making an effort to at least try to attain a specific goal, then listen to this episode of Let’s Fix Work. In this episode, you’ll hear: My method for creating a system and plan for goal setting Writing a book proposal even if when I was scared and my pre-mortem told me I was sure to fail - but I got a book deal! Running life on your schedule and with integrity The importance of putting yourself first When to consider getting a coach or therapist Resources from this episode: Thank you to our sponsor: Ultimatesoftware.com/LFW Jesse Itzler: https://jesseitzler.com/ *** We're proud to be sponsored by Ultimate Software. I am so excited to share this episode of Let’s Fix Work with you! My guest this week is Kevin Kruse, founder and CEO of LeadX. Kevin is also a New York Times bestselling author of nine books. He has a brand new book hitting the shelves titled Great Leaders Have No Rules: Contrarian Leadership Principles to Transform Your Team and Business. I have been following Kevin’s career for around ten years, and it is wonderful to finally have him as a guest on the show. Besides talking about a “no-rules” work zone, we discussed the role of “love” in leadership. That's right, love. We explored the idea that you don't actually need to like someone who works for you or with you, but you do need to love that person. It's smart and interesting conversations like this one that keeps me excited about doing this podcast! So if you enjoy learning about the interconnectivity between love and work, leadership principles, or “no rules” work zones, join me for this conversation with Kevin Kruse. In this episode, you’ll hear: How rules can get in the way of relationships Success and understanding that can develop when leaders connect with employees, explain the company culture, and the “why” behind certain actions Leadership is a superpower - not a choice The importance of the “close the open door” principle and the power of creating a sense of psychological safety in others The “crowd the calendar” idea and the importance of scheduling open-office times and your work How to personalize your leadership approach The reasoning behind not over-investing in one person but rather leveraging the talents of top performers Kevin’s perspective on why leaders must lead with love by putting the needs of others ahead of their own That whatever rules you have, it’s important to have a conversation about them...then the rule will be strengthened because of the relationship that develops Resources from this episode: Thank our sponsor: https://Ultimatesoftware.com/LFW Great Leaders Have No Rules: Contrarian Leadership Principles to Transform Your Team and Business: https://amzn.to/2U59biV John Wooden Quotes https://www.success.com/27-quotes-by-john-wooden-to-motivate-you-to-be-better/ Kevin’s website: https://www.kevinkruse.com Kevin on Twitter: https://twitter.com/kruse Kevin on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinkruse67 *** We're proud to be sponsored by Ultimate Software. In this episode of Let’s Fix Work, I talk with Professor Amy Edmondson from Harvard Business School and author of The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth. HR leaders and executives love this book, and they love Amy for her rigorous take on what it means to create a high performing and humane work environment. Her name and ideas come up in my social circles over and over again. I've come to know of Amy’s work through many women that I admire. And since it’s really important to them, it’s equally important to me. So if you are interested in psychological safety, inviting participation, and creating a productive workplace of tomorrow, then listen to this week’s episode of Let’s Fix Work. In this episode you’ll hear: Why organizations are fearful in the workplace today Why people need to understand that our human instincts, and especially our human instincts in hierarchies, are at odds with our organizational goals The definition of psychological safety How we reconcile psychological safety and corporate social responsibility That psychological safety tends to be quite variable across groups in an organization How leaders in the middle have figured out that they want their group, their part of the organization to be engaged, dynamic, energized, and candid People need to feel free to be candid and feel free to offer candid feedback How leaders can create that fearless organization, what it looks like, and some concepts leaders can use Being a leader is so different than it was even 10 years ago, and it requires such an exceptional and extraordinary skill set What the fundamental job of a leader is today “How can you create the conditions whereby we can show up and do the work we need to do, but also keep thinking about how will we be doing it better tomorrow?” ~ Professor Amy Edmondson “Set the stage, invite participation, and respond productively.” ~ Professor Amy Edmondson Resources from this episode: Thank you to our sponsor: Ultimatesoftware.com/LFW Amy at Harvard Business School: https://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Pages/profile.aspx?facId=6451 Amy on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amedmondson/ The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth: https://amzn.to/2XntpqW We're proud to be sponsored by Ultimate Software. Welcome back to Looks and Books with Cat & Olly, and to episode eight of our 'Reading is Fundamental' Book Club! When we planned out our content schedule, we knew that we wanted to dedicate an episode to LFW, therefore we knew that we needed a fashion-related book club pick. Tune in this week to hear us catch up on the last two weeks of our lives, toot and boot the THIRTY looks from the first two episodes of Strictly, and ultimately rip into an uneventful, misogynistic and racist book that we couldn't recommend less. Don't miss our SHOWNOTES - they're a veritable cornucopia of extra info... Sometimes it can feel like sustainable fashion is a new thing, but pioneers laid the groundwork years ago. People like this week’s guest, British fashion change-maker Tamsin Lejeune. Back in 2006, Tamsin founded the Ethical Fashion Forum, a London-based industry body for sustainable fashion. Her team also brought us Source, one of the first platforms to list sustainable resources & suppliers in one place. In the UK, it was Tamsin & her team who were running the sustainable fashion panel discussions and bringing the fledgling ethical fashion community together. How much has changed since then? How far off is sustainable fashion from being the norm? What tools do we need TO DO FASHION BETTER? Today, Tamsin leads a new project called Common Objective with that in mind. Think, a sustainable fashion matchmaking service, like a targeted Linkedin, or Tinder without the romance. In this absorbing interview we discuss what’s going on with fast fashion and why the model is broken. We decode the discomfort we feel when fast fashion giants launch eco capsule collections while still making most of their stuff the same old way. And we delve into the magic powers of fashion access over ownership, and the opportunities for the next generation of designers. Soteriology 101: Former Calvinistic Professor discusses Doctrines of Salvation
Much of this podcast is me attempting to rephrase our point of contention. JD continually moves the discussion to be about a non-regenerate man's need to become regenerate, when my contention was about the ability of an already regenerate to resist temptation. If a Christian sins is it because God has in any way failed or neglected to give His child what was needed to resist that temptation? Or is the that believer simply free (contra-causally) to resist divine aid and fall into that temptation? Compatibilists, like John Hendryx and Phil Johnson, believe "we do not make choices seperately from God's meticulous providence." In otherwords, God decrees which choice men (even regenerate men) will make, not that they will be free to make it. I'm not sure if JD would affirm this or not since he never went deep enough into our actual point of contention. Below is the blog post covering in more detail some of the other points in the broadcast: JD Hall responded to my podcast entitled “Is Calvinism Practical?” Maybe when I have more time I can sift through the entire discourse and podcast a rebuttal, but for now I simply want to reply to some key points JD addressed: 1. Dump on Stewie: JD begins by “poo pooing” on the Stewie character in my podcast and addressing him as if he is my co-host who agrees with me, which kind of misses the point. I picked a condescending voice to play the part of someone who disagrees with me and reminds me regularly that I’m not all that bright, which is probably obvious without the character but nonetheless I find him delightfully humorous. I know little about the actual character on Family Guy and have never liked the whole “guilt by association,” or “you must condone it if you use it,” or “boycott everything that looks like what we disagree with” approach to life. I doubt JD does either, but nevertheless he thinks my use of Stewie to lighten the mood makes me not worthy of “being taken seriously.” I’m actually fine with that. I don’t take myself all that seriously either. In short, the podcast begins with the irony of JD condescending my use of a blatantly condescending character. 2. Ad Hominem: This is a debate fallacy where instead of speaking to the issue one speaks “to the person,” or attacks the motives or character of the individual without real justification. JD speculates my podcast is meant to “make a name for myself,” he references that people in my church must not be holy given my views, and lumps me in with the easy believism crowd of the Joel Osteen types. That would be tantamount me lumping him in with hypers and accusing him of just trying to make an name for himself on his program. Not necessary nor helpful. I hope any further dialogue, if it were to continue beyond this point, would rise above this level of discourse. 3. Blaming God for Evil: In my podcast, I argued that this culture naturally blames God and runs to sin, instead of blaming sin and running to God. Then I asked if the deterministic conclusions of SOME Calvinistic teachers helps to bolster that false view. JD agrees this is what the culture naturally does, points to Adam blaming God for giving him Eve, and then takes a hard left turn into “Doesn’t Followsville” and asks me if Adam was a Calvinist, as if I had argued that this culture only blamed God for evil because of what Calvinism teaches. WHAT?! Back up. We agreed that man naturally blame God. Adam is a good example of that. When did I say that originated from being Calvinistic? I didn’t. I asked if the deterministic conclusions (i.e. “God decrees whatsoever comes to pass”) helps to BOLSTER that FALSE view or not. JD ignored that question to “straw man my argument” and make me sound as if I was blaming his soteriology for the natural tendency of blaming of God for evil. So, in the debate world that point would flow to my side. (0-1: Stewie is keeping count, but I’m not.) 4. Helpless Deity: JD refers to my view of “god” as being a “terrible, wimpy, helpless, little, dumb, fragile, deaf deity.” JD sure better hope he is right about his view of God…WOW. At least if I’m wrong I can rest in knowing God determined for me to be wrong, whereas if JD’s view of God is wrong, then he has just called God all those names by his own free will. Ouch! Now, this particular argument made by Calvinists is really just question begging because it presumes God didn’t choose for the world to be created in the way we are proposing but that it just “happened to Him” apart from His decision. As if “Arminians” all got together and imposed this world onto God, or God just accidentally got a world with free moral creatures and now He is a helpless divine victim trying to assist us when He can (see “straw man” again). Allow me to quote from Tozer to give a better perspective of my view of true biblical sovereignty: “God sovereignly decreed that man should be free to exercise moral choice, and man from the beginning has fulfilled that decree by making his choice between good and evil. When he chooses to do evil, he does not thereby countervail the sovereign will of God but fulfills it, inasmuch as the eternal decree decided not which choice the man should make but that he should be free to make it. If in His absolute freedom God has willed to give man limited freedom, who is there to stay His hand or say, ‘What doest thou?’ Man’s will is free because God is sovereign. A God less than sovereign could not bestow moral freedom upon His creatures. He would be afraid to do so.” – A.W. Tozer, The Attributes of God So, as I argue in my podcast over Tozer and Piper, the higher view of sovereignty, according to this perspective is the one in which God decides to grant moral freedom to others, not one where he has to “play both sides of the chess board to ensure His victory.” Our view of God is not some hapless boob that is caught off guard, as JD would like to paint Him out to be. I think JD does this because its easier for him to dismiss us as heretical than to deal with what we are actually saying. In our view, as in JDs, God is WORKING OUT EVIL FOR GOOD, which I think can and should be distinguished from God causing, determining, or in any way bringing about evil. I can work out something that is evil without being the cause of that evil, so I suspect God can do the same though I may not know how all that perfectly works within the concepts of divine omniscience (an infinite matter we cannot even begin to grasp or speculate about). JD compares God giving the world over to evil and all its consequences to two dudes watching his kids drown and not doing something to save them, as if that would be equal to the guys holding them under the water themselves. One, I think it far worse had they held the kids heads under water than if they would have passively watched. Two, God’s permitting sin and its consequences is better illustrated by the prodigal’s father granting him the inheritance (i.e. to go drown in his sin, so to speak), than the passive unloving jerks watching two innocent kiddos fall into a lake. 5. God’s hate for sin: In my podcast I argue that I don’t believe God determines sinful desires and thus choices (in the manner proposed by Compatibilism) and I reference God’s hatred for sin as one of the reasons. JD accused me of suggesting Calvinists believe God delights in sin, which once again I did not say (see straw man again). My argument was that God’s expression of hatred for sin strongly implies that he wouldn’t cause it…not even compatibilistically. (James 1: He doesn’t even tempt men to sin) Now, JD argues, as do most Calvinists that God doesn’t “DIRECTLY” cause sin but then goes on to show how God causally determines it through secondary means, as if that doesn’t afford the exact same argument. Face it, in that system God determined the nature which determined the desire which determined the choice of the evil agent. Plugging in a thousand deterministic causal links in that chain doesn’t make the argument magically disappear any more so than if I said, “I didn’t kill my boss. I hired someone who hired someone who hired someone else to kill him.” Do determinists really think adding more links in their deterministic chain somehow relinquishes the truck to which the the chain is attached? “Why did you just use your truck to pull my tree out of my yard, sir?” “No I didn’t, not technically. The chain did.” “Your chain? The one you attached to my tree and your truck? How can you say you didn’t pull it up” “Oh, no, see I put this link here in the chain, so you really can’t blame me for that.” “Huh, you put the link there. So, yes I can. You pulled up the tree.” “Your aren’t quite smart enough to get it obviously, but because I added several links in the chain that have really hard to pronounce jargon as their titles, I’m not really to blame here. You can’t understand. You’re too jejune. Just trust me, I didn’t cause it. Now stop with the nonsensical questions!” 6. Examples of God Determining: On this point I’ll refer people to my podcasts referencing Phil Johnson and James White as I cover this point more extensively there. I will just say that JD, like other Calvinists, point to examples of God deterministically bringing about some things as proof that God likewise brings about all things. And I remind everyone reading along that non-Calvinists, such as myself, may not believe God determines everything but that doesn’t mean we believe God determines nothing. The crucifixion, the raising up of certain leaders for certain purposes (Joseph), the inspiration of scripture, the setting apart of authoritative messengers (Jonah, Paul) etc, etc, are all things we can agree that God purposed and determined to bring to pass within the course of human history. That is what makes those events uniquely DIVINE. But, PLEASE NOTE THIS KEY POINT: Proof that God determines some divinely redemptive events throughout the course of human history is not proof that God determines all the evil that needs redeeming. I know, I know, God doesn’t “really determine the evil” because of all the links in this proverbial causal chain… But why!? Why do you need to create a chain that leads back to HIM!? Why not lead the chain back to US and stop there? How about we appeal to mystery as to how we choose one thing over the other and not impugn the holiness of God by suggesting He is ultimately responsible for which options I choose at any given moment? Do what Tozer did and hold to a view of God so high, so sovereign, that He is able to ensure His victory despite creaturely freedom, despite there being other powers and authorities in this world! It’s the best of both worlds. 7. God is Passive in Condemnation: In my podcast I ask the question, “Who, if not God, determined for mankind to be born with total inability due to the fall.” JD applauds the question and even replays it concluding that it is a great question and that yes God does indeed make this determination. But then JD goes on to argue that God is passive in condemnation, as if God didn’t do anything to determined the disabled nature of man from birth. Which is it? He argues on the one hand that God must actively work to change the nature of the elect, but God is passively allowing the reprobate to be what he was born to be, but this ignores the question he earlier applauded by overlooking that God ACTIVELY decided to punish all mankind with the nature of total inability to begin with. The same active decree that put man in their totally disabled condition is the same level of activity God uses to decree the rescue of man from that disability, but JD either misses that point or avoids it purposefully. I’m not sure which… 8. Addictive Sins of Believers: I make an argument for the contra-casual freewill of believers suggesting that those already regenerated are able to refrain or not refrain from sinful actions (like libertarian free will). Many, if not most, Compatibilists deny contra-causal freewill (LFW) in anyone (including pre-fallen Adam and believers), arguing that it is an “irrational causeless choice” unless it is ultimately causally determined by God. Apparently JD is not familiar with this particular set of beliefs and thus misses the point all together. It was good though because he made my case for me considering that we agree with each other on this point. Too bad he didn’t know that while he was arguing it, otherwise it could have been an actual point of agreement for us. In summary, I’d say that JD and I aren’t really near as far apart as he seems to think we are in our views. If he listened to my other podcasts he might see that. He does not want to impugn God’s holiness or blame God for evil any more so than I do. Our ways of describing those differences would likely appear semantical to most laypeople. I just think the Compatiblistic system fails to avoid the charge of impugning God’s holiness and maybe he disagrees, maybe he doesn’t–I’m not sure since he never gets beyond the surface of the argument. Unfortunately, most of his arguments don’t actually engage our points of contention but resort to strawmanning and hyperbole. For example, he said I deny the doctrine of regeneration and original sin, which I do not. I deny the Calvinistic concepts of “pre-faith regeneration” and “total inability,” distinctions I make very clear in my podcasts, but he never actually addresses. Hopefully JD will take another stab at engaging me but next time with a little less rancor and a little more substance. I’d love to hear, for example, why he believes some Christians do sin at times. Did God grant them what they needed to resist the temptation? If so, then why did they fail? Did God fail to grant them enough grace to resist, or where they just contra-causally free? Thanks for your time in engaging this discussion. P.S. One more point. I was also accused of being Pelagian, which I address in my third Podcast titled, “Am I a Pelagian…” It is the lazy man’s approach in debate to label and dismiss people as heretical instead of actually dealing with their point of view. Ironically, no writing of Pelagius survived for much of the same reason: the desire of man to do away with anyone who disagrees with him. I’m just thankful that today that it is “labeling and dismissing” instead of “labeling and burning at the stake.” Shew!
