He used to be a big fantasy reader when he was younger (some of his favorite authors were Ursula K. Le Guin and Terry Pratchett) but doesn't read as much now. The last SF/F he read and loved was the Murderbot series. Do you have any SF/F recommendations that are fast-paced, on the shorter side, and possibly reminiscent of classic fantasy? I value the gift of books and hope you'll use my recommendations to fill the stockings of your science fiction and fantasy loving friends and family members. Before I give you my short list of recommendations, I want to tell you that the links below help support my podcast through Amazon.com's affiliate program. As I've mentioned on my podcast several times, I'd always rather you get your books at independent or local bookstores. However, if you're using Amazon, I'd appreciate it if you'd use my link. My number one pick for the holiday season is Zen Cho's Black Water Sister, an urban fantasy set in Malaysia. I thought Zen's book was a great mix family drama, fantasy, lore, and eastern myth. Not only is her writing good, but she interviews very well also. Listen to episode 52 to see what I mean. Get a copy of Black Water Sister and enjoy the read.Number 2 on my list goes to C. Robert Cargill's Day Zero, which I read in about three days this year and cried at the end. I believe it's his best work. It is the prequel to his previous novel, Sea of Rust, which I also read this year and enjoyed. We discussed both of those books on Episode 51. Rounding out my top three is Xueting Christine Ni's anthology called Sinopticon 2021. Xueting joined me on a very informative podcast episode to talk about putting together this translated anthology. Enjoy that episode and then pick up a copy of the book to read different perspectives on future tech and culture. All Systems Red, by Martha Wells, is number 4 on my list. Unfortunately, I didn't get to have Martha on the show, but I'm hoping to have her on in the future. All Systems Red comes with a really good price and I think you'll enjoy the story about a cyborg who wants to be more than she is.Honorable mention goes to Andy Weir, celebrated author of The Martian and most recently, Project Hail Mary. Andy joined my show for episode 50, and Andy was just a real treat. I really enjoyed Project Hail Mary, and I think you will too.Recommendations for those wanting to start a series:1. Derek Kunsken's Quantum Evolution series, starting with Quantum Magician. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: Derek Kunsken is a great writer and an even better person. I've always been a fan of his writing. Quantum Magician will get you on his fan list too. You get an Oceans' 11 feel in space with galactic-level stakes. Listen to episode 20 to learn more about his series. Get a copy of Quantum Magician and enjoy the heist!2. Michael Mammay wrote a trio of great books about an old warrior who is too tired to care what people think about him and too stubborn to let something go when he thinks he's onto something. I enjoyed all three books immensely. I think you will too. Get book one, Planetside, and see for yourself! Oh, and once you've got the book, listen to the most recent podcast episode where we talk about the whole series! That's it for this year. For sure these aren't the only books I enjoyed, nor are they the only books you should consider. But for me personally, these are my top picks. Enjoy!

Zen Cho is a multi-award nominated and winning author. She's published 3 novels and many short stories, and is back with her first ghost story... although that's not what she thought it'd be at the start. It's called 'Black Water Sister', and all came from one word she read in the dictionary. It's based on ancient Malaysian folklore, and Zen has taken great joy in playing with old language, and presenting it in a ghostly manner. We talk about switching genre, and how having a baby helped with that, also about how much she knows what's coming next, and how she divides things up being a full-time lawyer, and part-time writer. You can get a copy of the book here - https://amzn.to/3aRpDOlIf you can, please support us at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week on Heyer Today, Sara-Mae is chatting to not one, but two fabulous authors of magic-inflected Regency fiction. Garth Nix (Old Kingdom, Seven Towers and Keys to the Kingdom books) discusses how his book Newt's Emerald was a homage to Heyer, as well as giving us his list of top Heyer-inspired fantasy works. Zen Cho, our other guest, is a UK-based Malaysian author. Her books Sorceror to the Crown and its sequel, The True Queen, are full of a Heyerian sensibility, but include magic, feminism, dragons and fairies. We also explore LGBT strands in Heyer's work and fan fiction inspired by this sort of subtext, and as usual, both authors discuss their favourite and least favourite Heyers. I first learned about Zen Cho when Amazon (always the faithful recommender of things to read! - lol) suggested I might like Black Water Sister. Well, Amazon isn't the king because they get things wrong. Indeed, I found the cover art for her novel to be extremely attractive and, once I'd read it, loved Black Water Sister. So much so, in fact, that I immediately asked Zen Cho, via her literary agent, to come on the show. I'm so grateful we got to chat. I think you'll enjoy it a lot as well. Zen and I talked about writing about different ethnic backgrounds without being cliche, how worldbuilding works when writing in a contemporary setting, and how she mixed different religious backgrounds into her story, among other things. We've got answers, but if you're looking for questions… Well, you're going to have to ask Deep Thought. We take a trip through life, the universe and everything as we celebrate The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Which is the definitive version of Douglas Adams' masterpiece? The radio series hit airwaves in 1978, the first novel followed in 1979, there's a much-loved 1980s TV series and oft-maligned 2005 movie, with videogames, comics and stageplays appearing along the way. Saturated with Adams unique voice, the story is infinitely quotable and hugely influential. Join us as we spend an evening celebrating its humour, sci-fi credentials and memorable characters. We take our trip to the planet Magrathea in the company of writer, editor, book reviewer and Doctor Who superfan Rhian Drinkwater, who'll be a familiar name to followers of SFX magazine and the Arthur C Clarke Award. In this episode, I talk with Zen Cho, author of BLACK WATER SISTER. In this Malaysia-set urban fantasy, out-of-work college grad Jessamyn joins her struggling immigrant parents as they return to their home country. But for Jess, who's been an American most of her life and hides her long-distance girlfriend from her parents, reintegrating with overbearing family and unfamiliar customs is highly stressful. Made all the worse when Jess's recently deceased grandmother, Ah Ma, takes up residence in her mind. As Ah Ma begins domineering her body, Jess is pulled into a supernatural conflict between her grandmother's patron deity—the Black Water Sister—and a dangerous gang boss. Jess fights to reclaim control of her destiny while seeking retribution for her grandmother, but failure could spell doom from a number of directions, including Ah Ma's own mysterious god. When Jessamyn Teoh starts hearing a voice in her head, she chalks it up to stress. Closeted, broke and jobless, she's moving back to Malaysia with her parents – a country she last saw when she was a toddler. She soon learns the new voice isn't even hers, it's the ghost of her estranged grandmother. In life, Ah Ma was a spirit medium, avatar of a mysterious deity called the Black Water Sister. Now she's determined to settle a score against a business magnate who has offended the god—and she's decided Jess is going to help her do it, whether Jess wants to or not. Drawn into a world of gods, ghosts, and family secrets, Jess finds that making deals with capricious spirits is a dangerous business, but dealing with her grandmother is just as complicated. Especially when Ah Ma tries to spy on her personal life, threatens to spill her secrets to her family and uses her body to commit felonies. As Jess fights for retribution for Ah Ma, she'll also need to regain control of her body and destiny – or the Black Water Sister may finish her off for good.

This week we read The Perilous Life of Jade Yeo by Zen Cho, a historical romance novella, which in the author’s own words is a “happy fluffy story about a single non-white woman at large in 1920s London”. Learn why you shouldn’t make a decision after reading (most) Brontës, the difficulties of being scrutable and loof, and whether we’ve finally found a cad we don’t want to punch? This novella is available for free on Kindle or at barnesandnoble.com.Content WarningsDiscussion of sex, and pregnancy. This story is set in 1920’s London with a female Chinese Malaysian British protagonist and so does touch on racism and sexism.Social MediaYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFXi9LNQv8SBQt8ilgTZXtQInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/teachmycat2read/Twitter: https://twitter.com/teachmycat2read?s=09Tumblr: https://teachingmycattoread.tumblr.comWebsite: https://teachingmycattoread.wordpress.com/Email: teachingmycattoread@gmail.comSupport the show (https://ko-fi.com/teachingmycattoread)

Zen Cho is back with a brand new novella called The Pure Order of the Moon Reflected on Water. She calls it a tropical wuxia, inspired by martial arts yarns and period C-dramas, follow her band of merry bandits as they careen around a fantasy take on Malaya's emergency with a kung-fu nun in tow. It's rip-roaring, tender in places and way... way... too short. We ask her all the questions!

This week, Jonathan and Gary are back together (with no guests) for the first time in several weeks, and we discuss the inevitable: the current pandemic, and the various ways in which it was and was not anticipated by past science fiction narratives—not only of worldwide plagues but of alien invasion stories and tales of isolation. But we also find time to touch upon the reading we've both been up to, including Gene Wolfe's final novel, Lavie Tidhar's reinvention of the Arthurian tales By Force Alone and some recent titles edited by Jonathan himself, including Zen Cho's The Order of the Full Moon Reflected in Water and Alex Irvine's Anthropocene Rag. We also encourage listeners to check out our newly launched series of short "Ten Minutes With . . ." podcasts, and to support not only their local bookstores, but independent publishers, including our beloved Locus magazine, who like so many people are facing unprecedented stresses in the current economic environment.

I was hoping you girls could recommend me some books to bring for the trip Summer books are good, I also like thriller and horror, weird for summer but oh well! I like authors like Taylor Jenkins Reid No YA if you can -Tamika 2. Time Sensitive: My son is turning 15 next week and I always get him a book (or five) for his birthday. This past year, he’s really been into graphic novels: he loved Scott Pilgrim (and the movie) and having read The Watchmen myself some years ago, I gave him a copy and he loved it. We have Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman and Marvel 1602 in the house (which I have not yet read yet), but I am looking for some other graphic novels he might enjoy. Any suggestions? -Neda 3. Hello Get Booked friends! Last year I was #blessed to get a job at my dream company, and am currently moving from entry-level to mid-career level responsibilities (aka “Big Kid stuff” as I like to think to stave off imposter syndrome). I have such a supportive work community as I grow into these new responsibilities, but I am wondering if you could recommend books (fiction or non-fiction) with practical advice for women stepping into leadership and “big-girl” responsibilities for the first time. I’ve read Lean In, You are a Badass, and a lot of Brene Brown, and tested the waters of some general business books, but I’d love the practical, Millennial perspective of women moving from entry-level to a management role (and managing people) for the first time. -Lauren 4. Aloha Ladies! This podcast has been a godsend for me as I’ve recently rediscovered my love for books after a long hiatus. With my re-entry into the world of bibliophiles, my best friend and I created a long-distance book club (Hawaii to Boston!) with some other wonderful women who were interested. I’ve never been part of a book club before and am so nervous about picking an interesting read that will spark discussion. There are no restrictions on genre, author, etc., but I would prefer to select a book that’s written by a woman. My personal preferences lean heavily towards fantasy (not sure that’s the best for a group), true crime and mystery/thrillers. Any suggestions for books that will drive thought-provoking discussion would be greatly appreciated! Many Mahalos! -Christina 5. Hello! I have a wonderful colleague who is preparing to adopt a child from Colombia. She doesn’t know a great deal yet, but knows that the child will be around 8-10 years old. I would love to get her some books that they could read aloud together. My colleague and her family are all currently taking Spanish classes, and the child will be in the process of learning English. Any thoughts on a good read that might help to ease the adjustments that will be happening in some small way? Thanks so much, for this and for your great recs in general! -DK 6. hi, i’ve been a fan for a while and so i’m looking for recommendations by authors who are not from the u.s., or more specifically just anything from the other side of the world. i have so little international books, it feels like i’m limiting myself to one country, one kind of book. i recently read “gumiho” by kat cho, which i really liked, and am reading “i am not your perfect mexican daughter” by erika sanchez, a book which i’m relating to a lot since i am latinx. some books i really like/love are “the rest of us just live here” by patrick ness, “eliza and her monsters” by francesca zappia, and any series/book that rick riordan has worked on or presented. i’m open to any genre though i have a tendency to like books that mix the real world with a bit of fantasy/supernatural. bonus if there is lgbt and mental illness rep in the book. -Ru 7. I am looking for a new book/books to read after finishing the books by Nina LaCour. I like books with queer characters (especially wlw and trans characters) set in western cities (LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland) where the city plays a big part of the book. I have read “Little and Lion” “Juliet takes a breath” and “when dimple met rishi” Love the show! We like to think that fantasy is a limitless exploration of our imaginations, but in reality, fantasy fiction is limited by the cultural experiences of the author. As someone not *too* far removed from the voracious-child-reader stage can I suggest: Dragonskin Slippers (Jessica Day George), Inkheart (Cornelia Funke), The Ranger’s Apprentice (John Flanagan), the Stravaganza series (Mary Hoffman) and Eragon (Christopher Paolini). Hope some of those are useful, and thank you so much for the podcast - every episode just brightens my week x --Hannah   Questions   1. First of all, when I found your show it was like a dream come true. I love to read! Second only to my love of reading, is my love of discovering new books and putting them on my to read shelf. I keep telling my husband that I wish I had y’all’s job. Speaking of my husband, I am recently married and we are getting ready to go on our honeymoon in December. We are heading to Australia! My husband and I have no intention of just laying on the beach and relaxing all honeymoon. That’s not our style. Instead we plan to do plenty of historical tours. My favorite tours are when I already have a little background on the history of a place. I was hoping you guys could recommend some historical fiction novels set in Australia, especially dating back to its early colonial days and possibly some about its Aboriginal population. I do not like nonfiction or pages and pages of descriptions. I can’t wait to hear your recommendations!! Thank you! --Amelia   2. Hello Ladies! Thanks for answering my previous questions (all those Besses are this Bess) and laughing at my jokes! Very validating! I'm writing to ask for reading recommendations to read over my honeymoon! We're going to an all inclusive resort and I can't wait to just lie around and read :) I'm specifically asking for books that are that tender, heartrending romance where you just want them to be together! Examples include Song of Achilles, Room with a View, Golden Compass Series (Will x Lyra forever). I already own Possession, haven't read it yet -- Way down with pining and angst, I am not really looking for a romance novel, but a literary story where two characters' love is just oh so burny and tender! Thanks in advance, --Bess - bride to be   3. Hi, so like you I loved Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho and I am waiting on tenterhooks for the next book in the series. I’m looking for something to filled the Sorcerer to the Crown shaped hole in my heart. I really like both the Regency, the politics, the slow romance and the magic elements of the book. The Regency period is such an interesting time in British history - right on the edge of the modern, but not quite there yet. I don't need the book to have magic, but it is always a plus. I have already read: Arabella of Mars by David D. Levine Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Patricia C. Wrede & Caroline Stevermer and loved all of them. --Sidsel   4. I am looking for recommendations for my 11 year old daughter. She would love to read YA, but I think I would like to hold off from the love relationships and more adult themes for a little bit longer. Last year she read "Some Kind of Happiness" by Claire Legrand and said it was written for her. I'm looking for books that are perhaps more mature, but somewhere in between middle grade and YA. Thanks! --Lauren   5. Hi Amanda and Jenn, I am listening to Deadly Manners, a dark comedy murder-mystery podcast series I am in love with! It's an old-school style story with modern sensibilities. The plot: there's a dinner party and guests are getting picked off one by one, and Levar Burton narrates. Need I say more? I just finished the next to last episode and am already dreading the void in my life when it's over. Can you recommend some books to fill it? Thanks! --Alexis   6. I know Halloween just passed but I heard Shelly Laurenston's booklist from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books podcast, one of the things she mentions is psychopaths and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for this. I don't want mystery or thrillers, more like a mind dive into spotting them, try to understand why they do it or facts. Since the holiday are coming up I would like some recommendations as soon as possible please. --Ash   7. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I would love to get some recommendations for romance novels that deal with sexual trauma or sexual dysfunction (or that just acknowledge the fact that sex isn't always easy and fun). I'm not fussy about the type of romance (just no paranormal). I realize this may be difficult because romance is supposed to be escapist but I am desperate to see my experience represented. Thanks so much for your help! --Joss   Books Discussed The Monster Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (tw: homophobia, assault) Becoming by Michelle Obama obviously The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott The Mothers by Brit Bennett My Education by Susan Choi Heartstone by Elle Katharine White Gail Carriger Witchmark by CL Polk Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste Death at Wentwater Court by Carola Dunn An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten, transl. This episode is sponsored by Sadie by Courtney Summers, Mirage by Somaiya Daud, and Chica Chocolate.   Feedback For Bess who wants full cast audiobooks: Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo both have great full cast recordings and I think they would work well for someone who liked His Dark Materials. --Insider Sibyl For the same person, anything by Tamora Pierce. At least one of her books was specifically written for audio and at least some were done by the company Full Cast Audio, who frankly has a lot of good middle grade fantasy stuff. --Insider Alanna   Questions   1. Hello! I’m a huge fan of your podcast! I was hoping you could help me find some books to get me through a sort of stressful time. For the next two months I’m going to be working three jobs in two states - with 7 hours of travel each way when I switch states every week! I’m hoping to find some lighthearted yet well-written romantic comedies to help me de-stress during the long bus rides. I am open to almost any genre, as long as it’s smartly written. I love Jane Austen (though not Austen retellings unless they involve zombies), Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Eleanor Oliphant, and This is Where I Leave You. Stardust is my favorite Neil Gaiman novel. I was less keen on Attachments and Eligible because they felt a bit heavy handed/cheesy. It’s been tough to find the right balance of lighthearted without being too sugary, so I would love any suggestions! Thanks! --Andrea   2. Hello, ladies! I'm looking for a book about strong women that has a specific flavor to it. I can't describe it exactly, but books that have that feeling that I've read are The Help and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe. I love books that focus on women's relationships with each other, bonus points if it's historical fiction. Thanks in advance! --Therese   3. Hi, My mother retired a couple of years ago, and has been using some of her newfound free time to read a lot more. I am one of her main sources of reading recommendations, and am wondering if there is some stuff out there that I am missing that she might love. My recommendations tend to mostly be SFF, historical fiction, and non-fiction, with some YA that usually overlaps with SFF or historical. She also reads mysteries, but I am not looking for recommendations in that genre at this time. One of my main goals in my recommendations has been writer and character diversity: there are enough recommendation lists out there of books by straight white guys. We are also both white women, so I feel that it is important for us to educate ourselves on the stories and perspectives of people different from ourselves. Now, I am going to give a lot of examples of books she has read, because I worry about getting a recommendation back of something she has read. Of the books I have recommended, she has loved The Night Circus, A Tale for the Time Being, The Queen of the Night, Bad Feminist/ Difficult Women, The Signature of All Things, Tears We Cannot Stop, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Books and Islands in Ojibwe Country, What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours, and Homegoing. She has also really liked books by Nnedi Okorafor, Connie Willis, Donna Tartt, Ruta Sepetys, Elizabeth Wein, Kate Atkinson, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Junot Diaz, Stacey Lee, Carlos Ruiz Zafron, and Ursula Le Guin, as well as You Can’t Touch My Hair, The Library at Mount Char, Never Let Me Go, Swing Time, Greenglass House, We Need New Names, Americanah, Lab Girl, Another Brooklyn, Garden of Evening Mists, and Kindred. Books she just liked: Station Eleven, An Unnecessary Woman, Rise of the Rocket Girls, Everything Leads to You, Ninefox Gambit, Bone Witch, and Boy, Snow, Bird. Books already on my suggestion list: Shrill, Radium Girls, I contain Multitudes, Behold The Dreamers, Pushout: the Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, The New Jim Crow, Men Explain things to me, Pachinko, Inferior: How Science got Women Wrong, The Cooking Gene, the Winged Histories, The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, The Hate U Give, Infomocracy, Citizen by Claudia Rankine, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America, Uprooted, Speak by Louisa Hall, The Fifth Season, Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, George by Alex Gino, Monster by Walter Dean Myers, Too Like the Lightning, Electric Arches, Labyrinth Lost, N.K. Jemisin, Zen Cho, and Jesmyn Ward. I would prefer backlist recommendations I may have missed, as I am pretty good at keeping up with new releases and determining if they seem interesting to either one or both of us. Thanks! --Mary   4. Hi! I'm wanting to read more fantasy and sci fi books as they're two of my favorite genres even though I haven't read a ton of books from either. I grew up reading Harry Potter. I've recently read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, and mostly enjoyed them but I was very disappointed in the lack of female characters. I would love to read a fantasy or scifi book where several of the main characters are women, and that isn't graphically violent and doesn't include explicit sex scenes. I've read and enjoyed the first two books in the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer (reading 3 now) and Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series. Thanks!! --Valerie   5. Hi, I'm looking for an audiobook for the Dr. I work for. He and his family with children aging from 18 to 6 years of age travel by car often. I'm looking for an adventure even a true life adventure, that would capture the attention of the children as well as the adults without a lot of swearing as they are a religious family. I know it's last minute. Your help is much appreciated --Tiffany   6. I need a recommendation to fulfill the Read Harder Challenge #2, a book of true crime. So far a lot of what I'm finding is things about serial killers or school shootings and for various reasons, books about murders, shootings, extreme violence etc are too triggering for me to get into a this point in life. But surely there must be true crime books about other topics? If it were a movie, I'd think something like Oceans 11 or Catch Me if You Can. Books about abductions or kidnapping are okay as long as they aren't too grisly or graphic. Thanks in advance for your help! --Jessica   7. Greetings, Jenn and Amanda! This is perhaps oddly specific, but I have recently realized that a premise I always love, whether in movie, TV, or books, is “unlikely group stranded together somewhere due to inclement weather.” I have always loved huge snowstorms and the resulting inability to go anywhere or do anything but hang out at home and read. I love seeing or reading about characters in a similar situation. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a snowstorm that’s keeping the characters stranded, but that’s my favorite. I am open to any genre, but prefer romantic or other interesting interpersonal plot points to scary ones (i.e. group of people stranded by snowstorm deals with deranged killer on the loose). I love your show and I thank you! --Darcy   Books Discussed   For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig (out Sept 25) Secondhand Time by Svetlana Alexievich The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn The Color Purple by Alice Walker Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart The Kindness of Enemies by Leila Aboulela Bone & Bread by Saleema Nawaz (TW: eating disorder) The Five Daughters of the Moon by Leena Likitalo Bannerless by Carrie Vaughn The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Hoover Bartlett The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean Snowspelled by Stephanie Burgis (rec’d by Jess) The Big Bang Symphony by Lucy Jane Bledsoe

This week Coode Street welcomes Zen Cho, who received the Crawford Award earlier this year for her story collection Spirits Abroad and whose delightful first novel, Sorcerer to the Crown, is published this week.  We discuss what it's like to be a Malaysian writer living in London, the influences and background of her new Regency-romance fantasy, the heritage of colonialism, the expectations sometimes faced by writers from non-Western cultures, and her recent anthology of stories by Malaysian writers Cyberpunk: Malaysia.  As always, we'd like to thank Zen for making the time to appear on the podcast and hope you enjoy the episode.
