With Earthworm Jim previously and Planetfall up next, you could say we're on a bit of a space-themed streak here. But while those games have lots of other things going on, the Elite series puts the vastness of outer space absolutely front and centre. When the original Elite came out in 1984 the sheer scale […]

My guest today is the American video game developer Steve Meretzky. Born and raised in Yonkers, New York, he attended MIT, where he earned a degree in construction management. In 1981, after two years spent working in the construction industry, a friend asked him if he would like to become a tester for Infocom, a publisher that specialised in interactive fiction. He agreed and was soon invited to write a game of his own, the science fiction game Planetfall. After he included a reference to Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the game, my guest was invited to collaborate with Adams in adapting the novel into a best-selling game. In 1988 he wrote A Mind Forever Voyaging, an ambitious and politically charged work that stretched the boundaries of what a video game could do ––and saw him become one of the first interactive fiction writers admitted to the Science Fiction Writers of America. After stints working for Blue Fang Games, Playdom and King, he is currently VP of design at the mobile games company PeopleFun.LINKSBBC Documentary from 1985 takes us inside Infocom.Play 30th Anniversary Edition of Hitchhiker's Guide in your browser.Google's AI experiment with Zork...Hire Ed Hawkins to voice your game. Roze offers Cleve, Mariah, and Corazon a job, but Dr. Citali has her own ideas on what it should include. Scene 20 Scene 21 Scene 22 GM Notes In this arc, we see several characters and creatures adapted from the video games. From Civilization: Beyond Earth, we have the Wolf Beetle, the Siege Worm, and the ever present Miasma. From the original Alpha Centauri, I also lifted Xenofungus (which is perhaps related to Miasma). I only took character inspiration from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. During our Session Zero, I asked the players for ideas on NPCs aboard Unity that their PCs knew. For most of those, I matched player NPC descriptions with existing leader profiles from the game. Cleve's NPCs are Sinder Roze and the Santiago family, represented by Corazon. Mariah's are Dr. Deirdre Skye and the “killer HR” of Nwabudike Morgan. You also heard mention of Professor Prokhor Zakharov from The University and Captain John Garland, who led the Unity expedition. Aside: In this episode, we make a reference to an upside down battlestation. That was the setting of several arcs of our StarCraft: FRAWD Investigators campaign, starting with A Very Special Mission. Mariah and Cleve protect Corazon Santiago from the Morgan Repossession Team. Scene 10 Scene 11 Scene 12 GM Notes The Stepdaughters of Chiron is an adaptation of the video game faction, Gaia's Stepdaughters. It remains to be seen if they are as peaceful as their video-game equivalent (which itself takes inspiration from real-world organizations like Greenpeace), or if they truly are “ecoterrorists”. Why change the name? “Gaia” is sometimes a name for Earth, but this campaign takes place on the planet Chiron. The stepdaughters are trying to adapt to their new home, not remake their old one. Note: In this episode, you'll hear us using social material and maneuver mechanics that come from a Genesys supplement called I Declare! Adjudicated Social Encounters for Genesys by Micah-Shalom “FatCrab” Kesselman. You can find it on the Genesys Foundry at DriveThruRPG here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/349232/I-Declare. Our music is from Purple Planet Music. Visit them at purple-planet.com. Need context? Jump to the start of the series!
Mariah and Cleve meet another human and learn some of the current situation on Chiron. Scene 7 Scene 8 Scene 9 GM Notes Corazon is perhaps the NPC most loosely inspired by the original video game character of the same name. Rather than have her focus be militarization as in the source game, I reinterpreted that at a more personal level as someone who is a bit reckless. Plus, early on, I wanted an NPC who was born on Chiron, not a “planetfaller.” Someone who would have a different perspective on society. Both because they don't have Earth to compare to, and because they didn't get a choice in coming to this planet. Our music is from Purple Planet Music. Visit them at purple-planet.com. Need context? Jump to the start of the series!
The first extraterrestrial lifeforms that Mariah and Cleve encounter are less than happy to see them. Scene 4 Scene 5 Scene 6 GM Notes During our Session Zero, our group made a list of things we either really wanted to have or really wanted to avoid in the campaign. Both players were interested in something supernatural to fit into the sci-fi setting. For Cleve, this translated to an ethereal animal companion. For Mariah, it was magic-like powers tied to the new planet. Neither PC had the experience necessary for those talents right away, but because we knew they wanted them, we began laying the groundwork for that early. The items that Cleve keeps finding and the purple glow to Mariah's eyes are the first hints of what's to come. Our music is from Purple Planet Music. Visit them at purple-planet.com. Need context? Jump to the start of the series!
Mariah and Cleve leave Earth aboard Unity, seeking a new life on the planet Chiron in the Alpha Centauri system. But something goes wrong on the way there. Scene 1 Scene 2 Scene 3 GM Notes You might be wondering why I set this campaign 30 years after planetfall rather than coincident with it. By setting it later, the world has already had some chance to develop into factions that the PCs have to deal with. This also ensures that there's a mix of built-up regions and wild regions. A campaign starting right at landing would have involved a lot more exploration and “human vs nature” conflicts than we wanted. I also wanted to see how the named NPCs changed over those 30 years. This gave the players something fresh to experience even with an NPC they “made.” I did talk about the extra 30 years of cryosleep with my players before launching the campaign, however. As always, it is important to obtain consent. After all, this is a cooperative story among players and GM. I encourage groups to bounce ideas off each other (and separate player from character knowledge). In this episode, we also hear about our first planetside faction, Morgan Industries. One of Mariah's NPCs took inspiration from CEO Nwabudike Morgan from the Alpha Centauri video game. It was straightforward to project what 30 years of unchecked capitalism might look like on a pristine planet. Our music is from Purple Planet Music. Visit them at purple-planet.com. Need context? Jump to the start of the series!
We get to the bottom of why it's called Fahrenheit 4-5-1 and which songs get stuck in our heads when we hear “Aes Sedai.” We finish up our thoughts on Planetfall by Emma Newman and kick off Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo.

We look at our first Adventures, the Atari 2600 Adventure and Colossal Cave Adventure. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Issues covered: why we're doing the adventure games, the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, birds and videos, connecting the printer to the modem, arcade games we played, action games, seeing a representation of a dungeon crawl, the dynamics of the simulation, clockwork and the surprising depth, a surprising story of a bat and a sword and a dragon, playing games with Dad, what you show the player and what you leave to the imagination, mapping problems, a score rush, muscle memory, wanting to explore to find new text, discovery, using text as game design and the emergence of narrative design, the ongoing life of interactive fiction, being able to page back through your work, other games of interest, the evolution of the design, the many dynamic aspects of the game, programming the Atari 2600, the first Easter Egg, a new timeline, being humbled to hear someone is making games, some other introductions, format fiddling, the first time planning a podcast. This week Andi and Lise discuss the brand new documentary on Netflix, Disclosure, about trans representation in media. Laverne Cox is the executive producer and the documentary includes commentary from several trans actors, scholars, and creatives who discuss the harmful and dangerous tropes that trans characters have been subjected to for decades, but also the double-edged sword of that representation, a question Lise and Andi grapple with: is bad rep better than no rep? And how do we negotiate bad rep with visibility? Andi and Lise loved this documentary, they learned a lot, and they’ll be watching it again. It stays with you – as it should. Find Disclosure on Netflix. Watch the trailer HERE. List of cast and crew HERE. Shout-outs! Lise highly recommends the book Planetfall, by Hugo-winning author Emma Newman. It’s part of her Planetfall series. Follow Ren and Lee Suh-Mi as they decide to seek out another planet beyond Earth that promises to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos. Andi is reading the graphic novel Archival Quality, written by Ivy Noelle Weir and illustrated by Steenz. Celeste loses her job at a library and takes another at a museum as an archivist, but it’s not what it seems and she soon finds herself confronting her relationships, her mental health, and possibly her grip on reality as she starts to dream of a woman she’s never met. https://lezgeekoutcast.files.wordpress.com/2020/07/lgo_81_disclosure.mp3

On today's show, Marc talks about their first impressions of Age of Wonders: Planetfall, which feels not terrible with a gamepad, as well as more Greedfall, which they hope ends sooner than later, some whatever PlayStation 5 news, and just a smidgen of anime, good and bad, bad and good. Anyway, something-something, wait, I won, wait, is this fun?!, cheers and enjoy the anime-zing(ly strategic) show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks. If you're feeling extra generous, you can become a patron, donate a little something-something, or subscribe to show your support for the site, the plentiful podcasts, the various videos, the absurd art, and all of the other nonsense we make over here at Pixelated Sausage. Thanks for being a fan.

In the last episode, #34 Red to Blue, we saw commander Aguire six shuttles of the Starship Hanno ordered to enter the atmosphere of Arcturus-4 to investigate the mysterious barrier, and to get a better view of the planet surface. Three shuttles aborted the mission because of the weather in the upper atmosphere. Commander Donno's shuttle is successfully circling the planet. Commander Sheffield's shuttle lost contact with the Hanno as soon as they reached the barrier. The Hanno saw that Commander Aguire's shuttle reached the barrier and landed on it and found that it was like a the surface of a fluid surface. A moment later a wave in the surface appeared and overwhelmed the shuttle, which then lost contact with the Hanno. In this episode, Commander Aguire's shuttle is damaged and must land on the planet. They see signs of life and decide to investigate.
