In this Horse & Hound Podcast advertising episode, our podcast host Eleanor Jones chats to World Horse Welfare CEO Roly Owers about what social licence is, why it matters and how it could effect every single horse owner and rider around the world.
It's one of the highlights of the racing calendar but the build-up to this year's Cheltenham festival has been dominated by controversy over one piece of a rider's kit: the whip. So, are new restrictions over its use a necessary step to protect horse welfare and improve the sport's image? Or, are they an over-the-top reaction to a non-existent problem that's forcing riders to reinvent their techniques at the peak of the jump racing season? Ex Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton argues that whip use is "not a welfare issue", while Roly Owers, the CEO of World Horse Welfare, insists that the whip should only be used for safety and training, not to encourage a horse. Panel: Nesta McGregor, John Hunt, Andrew Thornton & Roly Owers. Producer: Sam Sheringham

Rachael aka Ray the Goth has grown a sizeable social media following on both Instagram (22.7k) and YouTube (16.1k). Despite some amazing brand partnerships, opportunities and friendships, it hasn't all been plain sailing for Ray. She's had numerous negative comments regarding her weight, her horse's condition, and had World Horse Welfare called to her horse after some trolls took exception to her, and lots more too. Needless to say the accusations were baseless, but it still left a very sour taste that meant Ray made some changes (such as location tags) to her content. Ray shares the highs, the lows, the opportunities, and some great tips for people looking to grow a genuine, authentic following and find the right people for them.

I was lucky enough to be asked to help out at Royal Windsor Horse Show this May. In my free time I managed to grab interviews with Roly Owers from World Horse Welfare; Karen Thompson (mum of Hovis the Destroyer); Gemma Waller of Bransby Horse Rescue and Belinda Davis of Equissage. All interviews were recorded live at a very busy event and in slightly dodgy weather, so the sound quality is unfortunately variable. And of course, as always, I finish with this month's fun fact!
Elise’s guest today is Dr. Roly Owers, CEO of World Horse Welfare, based in the United Kingdom, but engaged worldwide to improve horses’ well-being. Roly is a veterinary surgeon and was a member of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, which included a posting overseeing the care of Queen Elizabeth’s Horse Guards as the Veterinary Officer at the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in London. World Horse Welfare was founded in 1927 as a campaigning organization to prevent the export of live British horses for slaughter. In the decades since, WHW’s work has been crucial in improving the lives of horses around the globe through education, lobbying for legal reform and protection, research, investigations, and re-homing. Issues the WHW tackles include responsible use of horses in sport, improvement of working horses’ living conditions, sustainable animal husbandry practices, and public awareness and advocacy. In today’s episode, Dr. Roly Owers takes us through the organization’s origins and how it has evolved, his previous duties as a Veterinary Officer for Queen Elizabeth’s horses, the core principles of WHC and how they continue to impact the organization’s endeavors, WHC’s efforts in both third-world and first-world countries, and of course, all the amazing things WHC has accomplished for equines around the world. It is widely believed that laminitis poses a threat to the health and welfare of all Equidae; however, there is a paucity of evidence-based research on fundamental aspects of the disease, including how commonly it occurs, its clinical presentation and those animals at greatest risk. Following generous funding from World Horse Welfare, we have produced a programme of work over the last eight years to improve the evidence base regarding the epidemiology of laminitis. This talk will outline the methods we used to gather evidence-based data in the equine field, highlight the challenges and lessons we have learnt, and emphasise the crucial role the veterinary practitioner can play in both providing and using such evidence-based data. In January 2008 more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys were removed from horrific conditions at Spindle Farm near Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in one of our biggest ever rescue operations. The horses were lovingly cared for and rehabilitated by the RSPCA, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare and The Horse Trust. Following a phenomenal response to our rehoming appeal in June 2010, we matched the horses and ponies in our care with special new owners. And almost three years on to when they were first rescued, we caught up with some of the Amersham horses in their new homes.
