In this episode, Buz and Dickie chat with Clinton Rasmussen about the innovative use of goats for land management, particularly in combating the spread of eastern red cedar in South Dakota. Clinton shares his journey from growing up on a ranch to returning after his military service and discovering the power of goats to clear invasive brush. He discusses how these goats thrive in rough terrain and how their grazing habits can significantly reduce unwanted vegetation, including cedar trees, yucca, and other tough plants. The conversation highlights Clinton's use of electric fencing and his experiments with no-fence collars to manage his goats across different paddocks. The effectiveness of goats in land restoration is contrasted with the challenges posed by eastern red cedar, which not only competes with grazing lands but also contributes to dangerous wildfires.Clinton explains how goats can fit into traditional cattle operations and how they offer a great opportunity for younger ranchers or anyone looking to diversify their operations. For those who may not have the capital to purchase large tracts of land or invest in a big cattle herd, goats provide a way to get started with smaller investments. Running goats alongside cattle allows you to use the same land without the need for major infrastructure or large upfront costs. It's an ideal way for younger ranchers to gain experience and build their business over time, especially since goats can thrive in areas where cattle struggle. Clinton's own experience shows how goats can be a stepping stone to eventually expanding into other livestock, creating a sustainable and profitable operation. One of the great advantages of goats is their relatively low water needs, especially compared to cattle. Clinton points out that once goats are established on a piece of land, they can often go quite a while without a constant water source, relying on moisture from the plants they eat, like yucca and cedar. This can significantly reduce the need for water infrastructure, as goats can be moved across the land without the need to set up multiple water points, which can be a costly part of managing cattle. This flexibility makes it easier to rotate goats through different paddocks and access areas that might be difficult to reach or impractical for cattle. For younger ranchers looking to minimize their infrastructure costs while maximizing their land use, goats offer a smart, cost-effective solution. For further reading, check out the AgUpdate article on "Tackling the Green Glacier" here and the prescribed burn resource here. The Persian Gulf has long been a contested space--an object of imperial ambitions, national antagonisms, and migratory dreams. The roots of these contestations lie in the different ways the Gulf has been defined as a region, both by those who live there and those beyond its shore. Making Space for the Gulf: Histories of Regionalism and the Middle East (Stanford UP, 2024) reveals how capitalism, empire-building, geopolitics, and urbanism have each shaped understandings of the region over the last two centuries. Here, the Gulf comes into view as a created space, encompassing dynamic social relations and competing interests.  Arang Keshavarzian writes a new history of the region that places Iran, Iraq, and the Arab Peninsula together within global processes. He connects moments more often treated as ruptures--the discovery of oil, the Iranian Revolution, the rise and decline of British empire, the emergence of American power--and crafts a narrative populated by a diverse range of people--migrants and ruling families, pearl-divers and star architects, striking taxi drivers and dethroned rulers, protectors of British India and stewards of globalized American universities. Tacking across geographic scales, Keshavarzian reveals how the Gulf has been globalized through transnational relations, regionalized as a geopolitical category, and cleaved along national divisions and social inequalities. When understood as a process, not an object, the Persian Gulf reveals much about how regions and the world have been made in modern times. Making Space for the Gulf offers a fresh understanding of this globally consequential place. Arang Keshavarzian is Associate Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University. He is the author of Bazaar and State in Iran: Politics of the Tehran Marketplace (2007) and coeditor of Global 1979: Geographies and Histories of the Iranian Revolution (2021). 1 in 5 days of work are lost “User expectations have just accelerated,” says John Ruthven, CEO of IR. “We just expect it to work. I expect that I can just jump on a conference call with a hundred of my colleagues, and we'll have a great experience.” In this podcast, we discuss the expectations gap and the productivity gap that flows from those expectations, and the reality of how routine business events unfold, in a way that does not match up. The fumbling around adds up. The minutes lost while people struggle to get audio, video, and other things to work and work together, adds up to a whopping productivity loss of one in five days. In our discussion, we also learn that this also means worker dissatisfaction, and the knock-on impact of flat customer experiences. IR also helps companies with getting paid. Frustrated customers who struggle, with the offered technology, to make a payment, can also become a customer who's not satisfied generally. Ruthven discusses how IR is taking on these challenges and offering working solutions. Visit www.ir.com

Audio of the 2015 opinion of the Court in Hana Financial, Inc. v. Hana Bank. In 1994, the Korean entity Hana Bank extended its services to the United States. In an advertising campaign that summer, they used the names "Hana Overseas Korean Club" in English and "Hana Bank" in Korean along with their corresponding logo. That fall, a completely unrelated entity, Hana Financial, Inc. (HFI) was founded in California. They obtained a trademark for their logo in 1996, displaying the words "Hana Financial." Hana Bank (the first entity) was aware that HFI was using the name Hana Financial but, since the two weren't direct competitors at the time, they didn't see any reason to take action against HFI. Imagine their surprise when, in 2007, HFI filed a complaint against them for trademark infringement! In a district court, the jury found that, since Hana Bank was the first to use the "Hana Bank" trademark in the United States - and had been using it continuously since that time - Hana Bank's trademark could be "tacked" to their 1994 advertisements using the similar name "Hana Bank." HFI appealed, but the U.S. Court of Appeals affirmed. The question before the Supreme Court in this case was: who determines whether a trademark may be tacked to an earlier mark? Is it a question of law which a court must decide, or a question of fact for the jury? In a unanimous decision, the Court held that tacking is a mixed question of law and fact to be determined by the jury.   Access this SCOTUS opinion and other essential case information on Oyez. I know exactly the professionalism.” “Let's show up. Let's dress up. Let's play a part that will make people go, ‘This person is 100% showing up for me, representing me, looking great'.” “I always say it's not about what you're wearing; it's how you present yourself. And sometimes wearing something can help you feel a certain way.” “There's an actual study…and their sales numbers were drastically different, much higher, with the group that wore suits compared to the group that was wearing sweats. There's a psychological difference that will come about with this.” “Would I feel comfortable walking into my own store? Would I walk in and go, ‘Woah! I want to do business with this person'? That's the question that I think we need to answer for ourselves.” “That first impression, that first moment we get to meet somebody is so incredibly important. [It] sets the stage of how that relationship is going to move forward in the future. And you get one shot.” “'Best dressed guy in the office!' Looking good, as always, man!' This isn't the first time Darla's talked about Mike Michalowicz's Profit First formula (and how interior designers can apply it in their business). But this IS the first time she's had a conversation with the man himself!  If you don't know who he is, Mike Michalowicz is the author of The Pumpkin Plan, Clockwork, Fix This Next, Get Different, and a Wingnut favorite—Profit First. In this episode of Wingnut Social, he shares how you can flip the script and turn your business into a money-making machine.  What You'll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [0:45] Housekeeping: Wingnut Webinars + Wingnut Academy Updates [1:32] Mini News Sesh: LinkedIn is testing link stickers [3:26] Learn more about Mike Michalowicz [5:16] The story behind the first cover of Profit First [9:10] Why entrepreneurs struggle to make a profit [11:21] The pay yourself first principle applied to business  [13:55] What happens if your business is carrying debt?  [16:12] The optimal number to contribute to profit [18:00] Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) [20:45] Using tacking to make quarterly adjustments [25:06] How service-based industries should grow [28:10] Why you should work with a Profit First coach [30:13] The What Up Wingnut Round! Connect with Mike Michalowicz Check out Mike's Website Clockwork, Revised and Expanded Resources & People Mentioned Younger Next Year Profit First for Interior Designers Creating a Sustainable Design Business through Profit First Record your podcast episodes on Riverside Why entrepreneurs struggle to make a profit Cyril Northcote Parkinson studied human behavior. His thesis was that as supply increases in availability, consumption increases. If Mike is given one chocolate chip cookie, he'll eat it. If 20+ chocolate chip cookies are placed in front of him, he'll likely eat more than one because the supply has changed. The same is true for money. When there's more available, there's more to spend. It becomes a trap. Many businesses make tens of millions of dollars but are still struggling to get by because the more they make, the more they spend. They see money in the bank account and go, “Finally, I can do X, Y, Z.” Parkinson also points out that if you constrain supply, you can force frugality. You also become more innovative. You find ways to stretch it. When you have one cookie to eat, you savor it. When there's less money available to spend, you're more selective with how you spend it.  The pay yourself first principle applied to business If you take a portion of your income and put it toward savings, you will have a future of savings. Why not apply that to business? The first thing you do is allocate money to profit. With Profit First, the equation is sales minus profit equals expenses. Money comes in, you take profit, and then you know what's truly left available for expenses.  Profit isn't an event or eventuality. Profit is a habit. When money comes in, take a portion and allocate it toward profit. You use the profit to pay yourself first. You preallocate money to its intended use. It's a mindset shift. When you see what money's intended use is before you spend it, you work within the confines of that. How do you operate if your business has debt? Listen to hear Mike's thoughts! Using tacking to make quarterly adjustments What is your five or ten-year vision? What can you do in the next 90 days to best get there? Tacking is a strategy that's used by sailors. The boat has a desired destination. But you can't go in a straight line to get there because you have to take advantage of the winds. So sailboats zigzag to capture the wind to get to their destinations.  Businesses are the same. You don't beeline straight to the end goal. Obstacles, like the economy, will present challenges. So take things one quarter at a time. What are the biggest movements you can make in your business to get to your end goal? You also have to get into a quarterly rhythm of distributions. The only way you can grow is with fiscal discipline. The #1 rule of publicly-traded companies is to distribute profit to shareholders every quarter. They do that to maintain engagement and award risk-takers. Your business needs to follow the same pattern. It keeps you emotionally engaged in your business.  Why shouldn't you re-invest your profit? Why should you work with a Profit First coach? Listen to learn why!
