Dawn didn't ease her way into animal rescue—she threw herself in, heart and soul, saving an entire herd from the start. Her story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the belief that when you follow your intuition, it often leads you exactly where you're meant to be. Through heartache, grit, and unwavering dedication, Dawn has reimagined what's possible for horse rescue, offering new hope in an industry where every saved life matters. To say Vicky Leonard is brave is probably an understatement. Back in 2017 she published a series of blogs where she outlined the threat poor horse welfare poses to the racing industry. It caused quite a stir. Since then she has been advocating for change in the industry because as she sees it, horse welfare is the one issue that could bring racing down. In the seven years since that post, she has led hard conversations all over the world to help the industry grasp the risk to their reputation, their bottom line...their future. Like most horse people, Vicky is an optimist and a doer. She not only sees the dangers, but also the opportunities to make things better, and the many positive changes that are already happening. Vicky gives us a glimpse into the world of racing and her insights are valuable for everyone interested in the future of horses in sport.

This conversation was prompted by an event that occurred just before the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics. One of the top dressage riders had to withdraw because of a video that showed her whipping a horse during a training session. The video came out just as Dominique and I were planning our next podcast recording. Dominique said her social media feed was filled with posts discussing the video. Should we talk about it. Generally we shy away from talking directly about training that disturbs us. But horse welfare is an important topic and one we need to be talking about. So I invited Michaela Hempen to join us. We've just finished the conversation with Michaela on the connection between riding and the Feldenkrais work. Normally we wouldn't have a guest do back to back conversations, but Michaela was the perfect person to ask to join us. In her day job with the European Food Safety Authority she is currently involved in providing scientific assessments that inform the European Commission and other EU member states to formulate legislation to protect animals. This has primarily meant animals produced for food, but the mandate has broadened out to include equine welfare in general. In Part 1 Michaela described what they will be considering under these new mandates. In Part 2 we consider the role each of us can play in moving the horse community as a whole forward towards more horse-friendly training.

In 2023, Rebekka went undercover as a groom to see firsthand the daily operations at the Danish base of Helgstrand Dressage, which also has locations in Germany and Florida. Inside the barn, Rebekka found horses with welts from whips, mouth sores that were not given time to heal, and spur marks that were disguised with shoe polish when customers visited. She also filmed Helgstrand riders riding aggressively in training sessions with tight draw reins and the use of rollkur. Later that year, the documentary “The Secrets of the Horse Billionaire” aired on Danish national televisions station TV2, resulting in the indefinite suspension of owner Andreas Helgstrand from the Danish National Dressage Team. MIckella and Toto traveled and visited kindergartens and other educational programs to educate and advocate on equine welfare. Toto and Mickella originated a therapy program in a few assisted living homes for the elderly, Day care for the disabled and recently were invited to a local hospital. Today Mickella owns and operates a program called  “Compassionate Communications with Animals”, Teaching human learners to utilize and improve their observational and communication skills. By harnessing human love and empathy for animals and the passion for a connection and bond, she motivates a more compassionate outlook on Animal behavior, learning and welfare. In this episode, Jec visits with Mary Ann Simonds in a discussion around how to keep horses happy in their domestic spaces. It's a wide ranging interview and Mary Ann well versed in a wide range of subjects. While her work is mostly with sport horses and competitive riders, there are a lot of take-aways for us more ordinary riders with our more ordinary horses.  I think you will also dig the Riding Season Reviews page on NickerNews. Every year, we dedicated space and time to review gear – clothing, horse camping and saddle bag must haves. We have products from Camelbak, Patagonia, Nomadix, Outdoor Pantry, Hoka, Duckworth, and more.  We thank Lucerne Farms for their sustaining sponsorship. Lucerne is a forage company based in Northern Maine. Forage is chopped hay, an excellent option when you can't have your horse on pasture or when you need to add calories and nutrients to your horses' diet. We also thank Redmond Equine for being part of our sponsorship family. Redmond rocks and other offerings come straight from their mine in Redmond, Utah.  This interview really got me thinking about creative ways to enhance a horse's day. My four horses are in a dry lot most of the time. It is about 80 by 150 feet and has a run-in shed. They get turned out to several acres of pasture, which in the high desert of southwestern Colorado, is mostly dirt, for a few hours every day. I have panels in the dry lot that they go around and use strategically if they want to get away from another horse. I see that space awareness is definitely an effective language of my social herd. Just this winter, the geldings started entertaining themselves by playing with small rubber tubs (that I use to put soaked alfalfa cubes in). They have this funny game of picking up the tubs, playing of tug of war and generally being goofy. So I know that sometimes enhancing a space can come about through chance and observation. Anyway, I thought Mary Ann's points around the need for lots of social interaction was spot on.  We thank Kate's Real Food and Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. Did you know? All ya gotta do is comment or suggest a podcast topic or send us a training question here and you'll be automatically qualified for our monthly Patagonia WorkWear giveaway.

Horses who may have been neglected, left behind, forgotten, mistreated or simply unable to be cared for by their owners. Not all of these horses come from homes where they were not loved. In fact, a large percentage of horses in the current climate are victims of drought or flooding in parts of our country. Their families are suffering, livelihoods are being threatened and the horses are simply victims passed on by regretful owners. Others come from homes where their owners were simply not educated appropriately in the care or management of horses. And sadly, some do come from backgrounds of complete neglect, abandonment and careless breeding programs.
