Late in 2024, the UK government launched a Consultation on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence. The questions - all 47 of them - asked a range of questions, including whether UK Law should allow free access to protected content for AI training. It also made it clear that it had a preferred option. What it probably hadn't anticipated was the swell of public opinion, even as the consultation closed. In the LHV Guest Spotlight this time is Tim Carter, a solicitor turned tech consultant, who has worked with tech companies of all sizes, from Google to Flawless AI. Importantly, Tim, has worked for tech developers serving the creative industries, which gives him an unusually broad perspective. So -  open to consultation or just open to Big Tech?

Jolyon Maugham has been called 'Public Enemy No. 1" by terrible right wing newspapers, attacked by Rishi Sunak and belittled with smears by the BBC.  And if that wasn't enough to make you love him, he also heads up an organisation that works for justice in our laws and legal system, challenging powerful elites and holding wealthy corporations and careless governments to account on behalf of ordinary people. Come to think of it, the smears on his name may have something to do with that. Jolyon joined us to talk about the most popular of the slurs he's faced and the story behind it, as well as his work with the Good Law Project, a not for profit campaign organisation that uses the law for a better world. Jolyon talks about the unhealthy closeness between the executive and the police, whether newspapers and government officials really care about free speech and how the law can be used to make the world a better place from gender based violence to tax law.  This interview was made possible by the lovely people at Greenbelt festival and you can hear Jolyon's talk at Greenbelt 2023 here for just three British pounds.  You can buy Jolyon Maugham's book, Bringing Down Goliath here and follow him on Twitter here.   You can find more about this episode at beerchristianity.co.uk New to Beer Christianity? It's not terribly serious.  Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not available in all good bookshops, but if you bought it and left a review that would probably make that more likely.  We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.

Do preborn babies have rights? A new UK law is chipping away at reproductive standards for Invitro-fertilization for parents. #123 Is you company legally compliant?

The ISO Show

All companies have a legal obligation to comply with existing legislation – it's the law! Failure to comply to legal requirements can be costly in terms of fines and reputational damage if an incident occurs. So, it's in your best interest to ensure you can identify all applicable compliance requirements.   Most ISO's specify a requirement to identify legal compliance requirements, and in our experience, the most effective way to do so is through the creation of a Legal Register. Mel is joined by Sarah Ball, A QHSE Consultant here at Blackmores, to discuss how you can create your own Legal Register and keep up-to-date with changes in legislation. You'll learn The importance of Legal Compliance How to identify what legislation is applicable to you What is a Legal Register? How can you create a legal Register? How can you keep up with changes in Legislation?   Resources isologyhub gov Productivity Ninja   In this episode, we talk about: [01:06] Why do you need to comply with Legislation – quite simply, it is the law! It can be very costly for you in both a financial and reputational respect. [01:25] There is a requirement for identifying legal compliance requirements in most ISO's i.e. ISO 45001 (Health and Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental)   [02:33] A Legal Register is not a requirement of any ISO – but we find it is the most effective way of documenting and keeping track of changes in applicable legislation. [03:05] Why is it so important to manage legal compliance? Besides the financial and reputational cost of not complying with the law – it's a way to protect your business. The law is there for a reason and it is often times to protect individuals or communities. [04:35] You will need to take a proactive approach to find out what legislation is applicable to you. [05:40] How can you identify your legal obligations? Firstly, do some basic research, start by visiting reputable industry authorities as they will likely have some guidance available i.e. The HSE Website or the Legislation.gov website. There are also subscription services available that give you an overview of what may be applicable to you and notify you of any updates. Finally, you can look to a specialist consultancy to help you.   [09:05] We do have a module on Legal Compliance available in the isologyhub!   [10:05] Why is it important to have a legal register? You will have to keep track of a lot of legislation! By documenting it, you have full visibility and can identify any gaps. You can also assign accountability against each piece of legislation, so the responsibility can be shared and managed. [11:40] Your brain is for thinking and processing, not remembering. By documenting information, you create a ‘second brain' to free up your brain for more important tasks – We recommend checking out the ‘Productivity Ninja' series of books for more helpful organisation and prioritisation tips!   [12:28] What does a Legal Register look like? It's typically a table of information – we use spreadsheets but any format is fine. Key columns we use identify the name of the legislation or contractual obligation, a link to the legislation, the requirements and purpose (what does this legislation mean to you?), A link to any further guidance and description of what good looks like to you i.e an example of evidence of compliance. You could include a column for accountability. [16:00] How do you create a Legal Register? First, set up your table, next go out and find your applicable legislation, confirm and document your requirements in regard to the legislation, then assign accountability within the organisation. You may want to consult stakeholders to complete the obligations and figure out what good looks like. It is also good practice to do a legal compliance audit to ensure you are meeting obligations and identify any gaps. [17:50] You can document other requirements in the Legal Register – this can include Service Level Agreements or even any ISO standards you're certified to. It is advised to add any contractual requirements with customers or possibly landlords or suppliers. If you are a trade body that has a code of conduct, we recommend you include that too. [21:00] Sarah's top tip: When creating new processes or updating existing ones, it's always good to look back at the Legal Register and check that any changes you're making aren't going to affect anything in terms of compliance.   We'd love to hear your views and comments about the ISO Show, here's how: Share the ISO Show on Twitter or Linkedin Leave an honest review on iTunes or Soundcloud. The UK government has promised to introduce a new ‘Brexit Freedoms' Bill in the current parliamentary session. The government's aim is to make retained EU law – former EU legislation placed on the British statute book during the Brexit process – easier to amend. However, this may mean increasing ministers' ability to make important policy changes via delegated legislation, with relatively little parliamentary scrutiny. What can we expect the ‘Brexit Freedoms' Bill to look like? What could it mean for the relative power of parliament and ministers? What might this mean for laws and regulations that affect the everyday lives of UK citizens? This seminar will bring together an expert panel to discuss these important questions.Speakers:Professor Catherine Barnard, Professor of European Union Law and Employment Law, University of CambridgeDr Tom West, Delegated Legislation Review Manager, Hansard SocietyRuth Chambers, Senior Parliamentary Affairs Associate, Greener UKChair: Dr Joe Tomlinson, Senior Lecturer in Public Law, University of York

Roe v. Wade, legal case in which the U.S. Supreme Court on January 22, 1973, ruled (7–2) that unduly restrictive state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional.  Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022. The Supreme Court disagreed with Roe's assertion of an absolute right to terminate pregnancy in any way and at any time and attempted to balance a woman's right of privacy with a state's interest in regulating abortion.  Abortion in the United Kingdom is legally available through the Abortion Act 1967 in Great Britain, and the Abortion (Northern Ireland) (No. 2) Regulations 2020. Britain's leading abortion care provider is anticipating “assaults on abortion law in Parliament” following the fall of landmark Roe vs Wade ruling in the US.In this episode we discuss the two chief positions on the morality of abortion: “pro-life” position vs“pro-choice” . The basic pro-life position holds that induced abortions are morally impermissible (morally wrong, morally prohibited). The basic pro-choice position holds that induced abortions are morally permissible (morally allowable, not morally wrong). Support the showTell us your thoughts on instagram @boldbrownandbritish or Visit our Linktree

We consider what changes we might see in the law moving forward. In our news section, we cover:New research from TLT showing an increase in employees using interim relief applications. These can be challenging and costly for employers to deal with, and many HR teams will never have seen one before.A recent reminder of the need to be flexible to help parents with childcare commitments – particularly where a flexible contract has already been agreed.Useful links:EHRC Working Forward campaignSend us your questions and we'll answer them in a future episode – email emplawpodcast@tltsolicitors.com or tweet us using the hashtag #TLTemploymentpodcast and tag @TLT_EmploymentYou can find out more about our employment team at tltsolicitors.com/employmentSign up to receive our updates at tltsolicitors.com/signupIf you’ve enjoyed listening, please rate us and write a review.

Hello folks! It’s been a while since I last produced some content for this website and my podcast. Last week, I had some very interesting feedback from a friend regarding a comment I made about the salutation Dear Sirs towards the end of episode 43. Anna K. informed me that her language school teaches students that the salutation Dear Sirs should be used when addressing a legal entity. I had never come across this before and so I decided to do a little reading and investigating. This is a link to an article from The Guardian. If you’d like to check out Ken Adams’ article, you’ll find it here. It’s very informative and definitely worth a read. Have a look at this to find out what the UK Law society has to say and here is a link to an announcement by the Irish Law Society on the same topic. Blog RSS
