There was no Internet when Yaya Han first discovered manga and anime in the early '90s. Born in China, she fell in love with this media (which was mostly imported from Japan) at a young age. But when her family unexpectedly moved to Europe, she became an outsider overnight - culturally and linguistically. That is, until she discovered a German anime magazine and started submitting her artwork. That's where she found thousands of obsessed fans just like her. But it wasn't until she attended a U.S. anime convention in 1999 that her mind was blown by the power of cosplay - super fans who sewed elaborate costumes and dressed up as their favorite characters. Yaya's focus immediately shifted from drawing to fabrics, and she never looked back. Today, her stunning costumes from anime and video games are adored by millions online, and she appears regularly as a speaker and contest judge at fan conventions around the world. She's partnered with global brands to release cosplay fabrics, sewing patterns, and even her own sewing machine. Yaya joins Matt to share her inspiring immigrant story, why online fandom is so powerful, her creative process, building her business in the early days of social media, the difference between re-creation and inspiration, how anime (literally) saved her life, and how she deals with online haters. She also takes the trivia challenge about some cinematic costume history! I had the unique and exciting opportunity to interview Andrew Liptak about his new book, Cosplay: A History. We hit the ground running with Andrew giving us his full blown origin story and how Star Wars pretty much kick-started his love of pop culture and all things nerdy. From learning Star Wars themed music pieces in high school band, to even joining the 501st Legion. That latter part is the overall theme in this book as it takes a look at the history of cosplay from the very first cosplayer ever recorded back in the 1930s to people attending the World Fair and so much more. In this chat, Andrew frames his time around the 501st as the blueprint for charting cosplay's growth into the mainstream status it's at currently. From things like cosplayers going from hobbyists to pros, making their mark in the movie industry, to individuals like Yaya Han bringing foam and her own fabric line to retailers like Jo-Ann's. There's a lot more to be heard in this conversation I have so be sure to listen to the whole thing! Cosplay: A History is available now at your local bookstore and Amazon! We've talked about Yaya's book all week and covered the first 4 sections – feel free to listen to the Podcasts that summarize the bookBuy the book – Yaya's really great about getting it to you right away. She signed it for me and even included a signed print. Above and beyond. In this final section, I think it covers the most ground of any section of the book. It goes over really how Yaya Han went from Cosplayer to Business Owner and developed partnerships, protected intellectual property, and in a short amount of time saw a lot of growth professionally. Results not typical – but it reinforces my statements on the show – there's no overnight success, there's no secrets to success – it's work, dedication, consistency, and unfortunately, a fair amount of luck overall. It's nice to know that the things that I've talked about on the show and how to go about creating a brand, and turning a hobby into something more are outlined and encouraged in Yaya's book.I'm very happy to see that she puts a lot of emphasis to controlling your own brand – having a website and a central place for your creations that is not just Social Media. There's not a lot about commerce and how to achieve this – Yaya believes in relatable content and relationship building in this industry. I do too – but there's definitely a way to SEO your way through Cosplay if you're providing product or service.Importantly – she talks about the most important reasons to do this and it's not about fame or money. It's about solving a problem for your customers/clients. Well done.My overall thoughts on this book – it's well written, well informed, well researched, and provides a great overview to a large audience looking to get into, understand more about, or be inspired to try more with Cosplay. There's even a resource section to help you along – I highly recommend spending the $25 plus shipping to have a copy of this book – digital or physical. Her website is also great – she's done a lot to customize it, and it's built on wix, so for anyone looking to create a website, you don't have to know everything about coding, but there are a lot of options.Check it out – I'm not paid to say any of this, I just find that Yaya is a great resource to the Cosplay community and a great example of someone who saw white space in something, saw it's potential, and made a decision to make an impact – with what she had, where she way, and learned and developed skills as she went.Find HoCS online:https://www.heroesofcosplaysanctuary.comFind the Sanctuary on Social:With Co-Host @astravoidcosplayFollow Her On Instagram & Join Her TikTok Community!https://linktr.ee/AstraVoidCosplay...And Host ScottyBVero: @scottybofficialListen to the HoCS Podcast Here: Website: http://www.buzzsprout.com/464554 Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/2QsDukZ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hero... In today's episode, we're talking about Yaya Han's book and the Duality of Cosplay that she covers in the 4th section. We're continuing with our review and coverage of Yaya Han's book with the 3rd section which talks about the creative process of Cosplay. This is really the part where I "got it" and really started to understand Yaya's perspective on Cosplay. This is the part of the book that made me want to be better at creating my own works inside costume design, makeup, and characterization. And really, this is expression in terms of adaptation – your own version of something, replicating something, commissions , etc.Alyson Tabbitha is mentioned in this section as one of the great transformers of modern cosplayPhotoshoots are talked about at length – a lot of great advice here from Yaya.Find HoCS online:https://www.heroesofcosplaysanctuary.comFind the Sanctuary on Social:With Co-Host @astravoidcosplayFollow Her On Instagram & Join Her TikTok Community!https://linktr.ee/AstraVoidCosplay...And Host ScottyBVero: @scottybofficialListen to the HoCS Podcast Here: Website: http://www.buzzsprout.com/464554 Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/2QsDukZ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hero... In this episode, we're continuing our look through Yaya Han's book and covering the second part of the book which goes through the history of cosplay. She goes through her journey over the years and how she got started – all the ups and downsRecent history in Cosplay, but also a brief on costuming throughout history, which I thought was great to includeCosplay pillars – Sewing and Armor. This is in terms of being a maker – these are essential. There are more pillars in my opinion, but in this context – yes. Agree – you need to learn how to do a couple of things in order to create costumes The advice is about truly becoming a maker – enjoying this journey of crafting and making it your own. Types of cosplayers get discussed later in the book.Find HoCS online:https://www.heroesofcosplaysanctuary.comFind the Sanctuary on Social:With Co-Host @astravoidcosplayFollow Her On Instagram & Join Her TikTok Community!https://linktr.ee/AstraVoidCosplay...And Host ScottyBVero: @scottybofficialListen to the HoCS Podcast Here: Website: http://www.buzzsprout.com/464554 Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/2QsDukZ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hero... This week we're talking about Yaya Han's Book and everything that it contains. Every day we're covering a section of the book, which is broken into 5 main parts.Part one is called the World of Cosplay, and it serves as your introduction to Cosplay and to Yaya HanHer origin story is very unique, and definitely not what I thought. Learning that she's from Germany and immigrated here was not what I expected.Advice sections throughout – and small tip sections, though it is not the focus of the book – not the main point – it is her story and truly is a guide to cosplay culture.Find HoCS online:https://www.heroesofcosplaysanctuary.comFind the Sanctuary on Social:With Co-Host @astravoidcosplayFollow Her On Instagram & Join Her TikTok Community!https://linktr.ee/AstraVoidCosplay...And Host ScottyBVero: @scottybofficialListen to the HoCS Podcast Here: Website: http://www.buzzsprout.com/464554 Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/2QsDukZ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hero... The 2020 Dragon Con Pre-Game Show hosted by Wes Carroll features interviews with Dan Carroll and Yaya Han and fills you in on what to expect at the virtual version of the convention
With the current state of the world through COVID, conventions have been cancelled/postponed throughout 2020. However, cons have been doing their best to adapt and initiate online offerings so that the spirit of conventions don't go away for this year. I discuss the most recent offerings with ReedPop's Metaverse as well as DC FanDome. Here I go into detail with the panels both events featured as well as the overall presentation of them. I talk about my favorite panels that were from each event, along with the vendor offerings on the Metaverse. Plus, I go into a discussion regarding Yaya Han's newest World of Cosplay book she released earlier this month, mentioning details and chapters from the book. With my ending remarks about hopeful future episodes, I hope you all enjoy this look at this temporary new norm for the cosplay and convention culture! Similarly, this episode is a series of reports and discoveries the likes of which have never been covered by a single podcast ever before! We visit Macross the Art, uncover long-lost VF-0 lineart, hear a live audio commentary by Shoji Kawamori himself and learn all about the making of the notorious SDFM episode “Phantasm”. But that’s just the beginning! We then meet conductor Kenichi Shimura and experience Yoko Kanno’s BGM work on Macross Frontier performed by a full orchestra. After that, it’s time to talk to the scenario writer of Macross, Kenichi Matsuzaki about the Supervision Army and hear mechanical designer Kazutaka Miyatake discuss his new personal best work. It’s more deculture than ever before, so throw on some headphones, kickback, and enjoy. These shots were instrumental in the making of "Phantasm". The view from the Conductor's podium.
