We continue in our mini series of the 30 pesukim of our Rosh Hashanah Musaf prayers. Pasuk number 3 of the Malchuyot is Devarim 33,5. God is King amongst Yeshurun, (which refers to Jewish people). When the leaders gather together, Shivteh Israel. They all gathered together, says the Ramban, and accepted upon themselves the yoke of God's kingdom. The Rishonim say this happened at Har Sinai, when we gathered together at Matan Torah and it says, and the Shivteh Yisrael were all together, and they all accepted Hashem's Kingdom upon them. So this is one of the times that we accepted God's Kingdom, and therefore this is discussed in our Malchuyot . The first Pasuk, Hashem Yimloch L'Olam Va'ed, happened at the revelation at the splitting of the sea, where we accepted Hashem as our King- Ze Eli V'Anvehu this is my God, Hashem Yimloch L'Olam Va'ed the revelation of the splitting of the sea. And another time, which is today's topic, was the revelation at Har Sinai. As we should have said back in Hashem Yimloch L'Olam Va'ed , it's very helpful when saying the pasuk , to remember the context and realize the clarity that they had then at the splitting of the sea. When you say the pasuk, you should imagine the splitting of the sea, as the enemies were drowning and we are walking through and seeing God in full control and we say God is king . Similarly, here we have to focus on the revelation of Har Sinai. The Seforno says that it's a general rule (not just at Har Sinai) that anytime the Jewish people come together, it brings the Shechinah down. In Bamidbar 7,3, where it talks about how the twelve tribes gave six caravans, he asks why six caravans? Why didn't the twelve tribes give twelve caravans? The Seforno says it's because they wanted to show a sign that they had brotherhood and partnership and were deserving of the Shechinah to come upon them as they were building the mishkan. And he quotes our pasuk וַיְהִ֥י בִישֻׁר֖וּן מֶ֑לֶך When is God king? When we're together, and the opposite when they separate themselves. So when you're saying this pasuk, think that it's not enough to just say Hashem is King. In order for God's Shechinah to come down upon us, we need to be united. The Gaon of Vilna says here that there were different times that we accepted Hashem as King, as we discussed (one of them was at the sea, and our pasuk is discussing Har Sinai ) and that's why it says the word yahad When did this happen? In Shemot 19,7, where it says וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ כׇל־הָעָ֤ם יַחְדָּו֙ / Everyone answered together, and again in Shemot 24,3 כׇּל־הָעָ֜ם ק֤וֹל אֶחָד֙ / They all answered in one voice There it says, Moshe wrote this down. He built a Mizbe'ach with twelve altars, לִשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ . That's the Shivtei Yisrael , when we gather together. Yahad Shivtei Yisrael . So the time of the Shivteh Israel joined together was at that time, at Har Sinai, where it clearly says Shivteh Israel. And they answered with one voice. And that is the power of the Jewish people together. There's a Midrash that says that God's Kingdom is like a palace that's built on two boats. As long as the boats are together, the palace will stand. If the boats are separated, the palace will fall. That is, so to say, the power of the unity of the Jewish people when we come together in our Avodat Hashem. And that's the focus on Rosh Hashanah in general. It's all about the Jewish people joining together. That's a fundamental point in our Rosh Hashanah. There's a famous letter that the Elder of Kelm wrote and put on the front door of the Yeshiva during Elul- Just like in a physical army, there's only success when the troops are united, so too, we have to be united together as the troops in the army of Hashem in order to see success. Bezrat Hashem, we will get there.

There are no words that can adequately describe the agony and pain that Klal Yisrael is suffering at this moment. While our brothers and sisters are being brutally murdered, we are praying hard for the violence to end. May we hear good news very soon. Everybody wants to do something to help, and fortunately for us, there are many ways that we can. The Chatam Sofer writes, ‘There is no such thing as tragedy for nothing. We are not like the fish at sea where one fish can just come and swallow another. Everything that happens in every single person's life is done B'Hashgacha Pratit.' We don't understand the ways of Hashem. We don't know why certain people had to die in such a horrific manner, but we do know that the enemy has no control. How is it possible that the Israeli intelligence did not know about this? The pasuk says in Parashat HaAzinu, Hashem tells us He is the only One in charge of life and death and nobody else has any say. In the very next pasuk, Hashem took an oath that He will destroy our enemies and our people, and our land will be appeased. Just the other day we read in Parashat Zot HaBeracha that all Hashem has to do to wipe out our enemies is say the word Hashmed / destroy . We will dwell in security and have the most enjoyable lives, but when that will happen depends on us. The pasuk there calls us Yeshurun , which the Midrash says means when we act the way we are supposed to , then Hashem will ride across the heavens and help us. Rabbi Menashe Reisman quoted the Or HaChaim who said all of the difficulties that were predicted by the Neviim before Mashiach comes do not have to come to fruition. If the Jewish people merit, the Mashiach will come with no tragedy. And even if tragedy has already taken place, it can end in an instant. It all depends on us. Hashem is shaking us up at this moment, and if we want to bring about peace, we have to step up and answer the call. Of course, we need to say Tehilim and pray hard for Hashem to save us, but we must also accept upon ourselves to improve in areas which need improvement. Everybody knows where he needs to improve. The harder it is to do, the greater the zechut will be and the more it will do to end this war. Our wars are fought by Hashem, and He is the only One that we need to impress. Before Rosh Hashanah this year, the rabbis were quoting the Aruch LaNer who said that in a year that Rosh Hashanah falls out on Shabbat and the shofar isn't blown, it is Shabbat itself who advocates on behalf of Klal Yisrael. The shofar is what causes Hashem to go from His Kiseh HaDin/Throne of Judgment to His Kiseh Rachamim/Throne of Mercy. Shabbat has the same power to accomplish that, but, says Aruch LaNer , that it is conditional upon us keeping Shabbat properly. Hashem has infinite calculations for everything that He does, and therefore it is not a coincidence that on the first day after this year's judgments have been finalized, Hoshana Raba, the attack on the Jewish people began on Shabbat itself. Perhaps if we can guard Shabbat better now, it will cause our Guardian to guard us. Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein said last week, that whoever undertakes to learn two Halachot every Shabbat with his family members, and accepts to follow those Halachot exactly as he reads them, he guarantees the person will have a good year filled with yeshuot in Ruchaniut and Gashmiut and that Hashem will fulfill all the wishes of his heart for good. May we hear Besorot Tovot B'Karov. Amen.
Tom Yeshurun joins us today from San Francisco. Tom is Founder and CEO of Civ Robotics, a company that automates construction layout. Their robots drive themselves around a site and locate points by paint or laser so they can be marked by their human operators. Tom shares the names of a few of the robots they currently have operating: Betty, Ugly, and Joey… No #5 yet. Regardless of the name, each robot is a four-wheel drive unit customized for specific terrain. Several years ago, Tom was a contractor who hired surveying teams. As he talked to these teams, he learned about the limitations they experienced with some of the early survey drones. Within a few years, Tom had founded Civ Robotics and led a team in development of a drone that could drive stakes with QR codes linked to relevant information about that spot on the worksite. As they sought to generate interest in their drone, they discovered that many workers were intimidated by the drone in one way or another. After hearing this multiple times, Tom and his crew set about building a ground-based unit. They found that 8 of 10 contractors preferred the ground-based unit over the drone. Much of Tim's team struggled with this change of direction, but the bold, painful pivot paid off. Three years later Civ Robotics has more than 40 machines in the field. Tyler asks Tim to talk through the mechanical functionality of the robots. Tim explains that the unit paints a spot or uses a laser to mark a spot where a worker can then drive a stake. Two people working with the robot can do the work of eight people with handheld equipment. Traditional two-person team places somewhere between 200 and 400 points a day, depending on the terrain challenges. With the Civ Robotics machine, one person following the machine can place anywhere from 700 to 3000 points a day depending on the accuracy needed. Accuracy is obviously a concern. The base model can mark spots within two inches, and the high-precision model can mark within 8mm, using a laser on a robotic arm. The unit then audibly tells the field crew worker which marker to place–red, blue, black, and yellow. Due to the addition of this vocalizing feature, some contractors are opting to have just a single human worker team up with the robot. Some job sites use multiple vehicles, most often two. That means that 1400 marks can be placed within an 8-hour shift, which requires a battery hot-swap at lunch time. (Everyone wants a lunch break.) Eddie shifts our attention forward to discuss what Tom has in mind next. Today most of Civ Robotics' work involves horizontal work. Tom discusses possible expansion, including partnerships with Trimble, but he said that Civ Robotics' focus for the moment is on outdoor, rough-terrain applications. Tyler talks about the promising job prospects for robotics operators. Tom confirms that the learning curve with their robot is generous enough that people can easily learn to operate it without any special training from the company. Eddie asks about licensing issues. Tom explains that you don't have to be a licensed surveyor to do layout in most states. Licensing is required to measure the land and place control points, but not to mark where to build. He also mentions that on-the-ground robots capture more-detailed topographic data than drones do because vegetation won't throw them off. We explore what “as-built” means in Tom's world. He explains that it refers to measurements of what was actually built. It often relates to topographical elements. Different entities have different requirements for how this data is processed. Tom explains that the “topo” feature can toggle off and on to gather elevation data. This data can then be gathered at the same time as the X-Y data, resulting in substantial time savings. Tom advises people to evaluate new equipment before buying. He's seen companies overcommit to specific technologies and waste loads of money. He shares about the various specialized robots he'd like to build or buy. (Here's the luggage-carrying one Tyler mentioned.) Tom's Megaphone Message: Construction automation is coming whether you want it or not. It's going to help customers build buildings more efficiently and with greater precision. It will empower us to reach our goals as an industry. If you don't adopt it, you're going to fall behind. We're here to build America. It needs to be a group effort. We need to have multiple technologies to meet those goals. Find Tom Online: LinkedIN - Civ Robotics Check out the partners that make the show possible. Abstract: Prediction is a fundamental process that spans most facets of human cognition and is one of the most essential aspects of efficient language processing. At the same time, prediction plays a critical role in reward processing. Nevertheless, the exploration of the involvement of the reward system during language processing has not yet been directly tested. Here, we investigated the role of reward-processing regions while listening to a natural story. In a pre-registered study, we utilized a published dataset in which half of the participants listened to a natural story and the others listened to a scrambled version of it. We compared the functional MRI signals in the reward system between these conditions and discovered a unique pattern that differentiates between them. This suggests that the reward system is activated during the comprehension of natural stories. We also found that the fMRI signals in reward areas are related to the predictability level of processed sentences and that the system might be involved in higher predictability during the processing of a natural story. Abstract: Infant stimuli elicit a widespread neural and behavioral response in human adults and such massive allocation of resources attests to the evolutionary significance of the primary attachment. Here, we examined whether attachment-related cues also trigger cross-brain concordance, generating greater neural uniformity among individuals. Post-partum mothers were imaged twice in oxytocin/placebo administration design and stimuli included four ecological videos; two of infant/mother alone (Alone) and two mother-infant dyadic contexts (Social). Theory-driven analysis measured cross-brain synchrony in preregistered nodes of the parental caregiving network (PCN), which integrates subcortical structures underpinning mammalian mothering with cortical areas implicated in simulation, mentalization, and emotion regulation, and data-driven analysis assessed brain-wide concordance using whole brain parcellation. Results demonstrated widespread cross-brain synchrony in both the PCN and across the neuroaxis, from primary sensory and somatosensory areas, through insular-cingulate regions, to temporal and prefrontal cortices. The Social context yielded significantly more cross-brain concordance, with PCN's striatum, parahipporcampal gyrus, superior temporal sulcus, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and prefrontal cortex displaying cross-brain synchrony only to mother-infant social cues. Moment-by-moment fluctuations in mother-infant social synchrony, ranging from episodes of gaze aversion to rhythmically-coordinated positive bouts, were tracked online by cross-brain concordance in the pre-registered ACC. Findings indicate that social attachment stimuli, representing evolutionary-salient universal cues that require no verbal narrative for immediate comprehension, trigger substantial inter-brain concordance and suggest that the mother-infant bond, an icon standing at the heart of human civilization, may function to glue brains into a unified experience and bind humans into social groups. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.01.522416v1?rss=1 Authors: Ohad, T., Yeshurun, Y. Abstract: We can all agree that a good story engages us, however, agreeing which story is good is far more debatable. In this study, we explored whether engagement with a narrative synchronizes listeners' brain responses, by examining individual differences in engagement to the same story. To do so, we pre-registered and re-analyzed a previously collected dataset by Chang et al. (2021) of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scans of 25 participants who listened to a one-hour story and answered questionnaires. We assessed the degree of their overall engagement with the story and their engagement with the main characters. The questionnaires revealed individual differences in engagement with the story, as well as different valence towards specific characters. Neuroimaging data showed that the auditory cortex, the default mode network (DMN) and language regions were involved in processing the story. Increased engagement with the story was correlated with increased neural synchronization within regions in the DMN (especially the medial prefrontal cortex), as well as regions outside the DMN such as the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex and the reward system. Interestingly, positively and negatively engaging characters elicited different patterns of neural synchronization. Finally, engagement increased functional connectivity within and between the DMN, the dorsal attention network and the control network. Taken together, these findings suggest that engagement with a narrative synchronizes listeners' responses in regions involved in mentalizing, reward, working memory and attention. By examining individual differences in engagement, we revealed that these synchronization patterns are due to engagement, and not due to differences in the narrative's content. We continue going through the Korbanot prayer of our morning Shaharit . It starts with the title L'Olam. Yesterday, we spoke about how we say, What are we? What's our life? What's our kindness? And that section, it continues, All strong man are like nothing. The strongest of men, God just blows over. Men of fame and wealth, men of power, they're like they didn't exist. The wise men, like they know nothing. After the seven What, what, whats that we discussed yesterday, we now discuss these three categories. Our siddur is based on Navi, and the rabbis tell us that this portion is based on a pasuk in Yirmiyah that says: A wise men should not pride himself in his wisdom, the strong man should not pride himself in his strength, and the wealthy man should not pride himself in his wealth. Rather, what someone should pride themselves in is knowing Me. That means pride yourself in your religious progress, (which is really the next words of the paragraph… “ except for the neshama” ) What we do that's praiseworthy and pride-worthy , is our religious accomplishments, because we make choices in that area. This is our humility pill every morning. הַגִּבּוֹרִים כְּאַֽיִן לְפָנֶֽיךָ Strong men are like nothing before You. There was a great Gibbor/Strong man. His name was Christopher Reeves. He played the part of Superman, he was muscular… and yet, as he was riding on a horse one day, he fell off the horse, cracked his neck and, lo Alenu, became a paraplegic for the rest of his life. He became a depressed man. He didn't go out into public for a year. When he finally came out, still a paraplegic, with difficulty talking, all made up for the short interview he gave, they asked him, “ What pulled you out of your depression?” And he said, “ When I realized I am not my body. I attributed myself to my body and my strength. And that's not me.” He realized Levad Haneshama . Even a goy has a soul. And he realized his strength was nothing. Anshei Hashem, men of great names, it's like they don't exist. Many years ago, there was a Centennial celebration of the creation of the Deal charter in New Jersey, and they had a book for sale in one of the local stores. As I flipped through it, I saw that there was a great man, whose name was Mr . Hathaway . There is a street named after him, called Hathaway Avenue . Nobody knows who Mr. Hathaway is today. There was a Mr. Darlington too, and another street was named after him. But nobody knows who he is either. All these great people, who built huge mansions, nobody knows who they are. No one even knows Mr. Hathaway's first name. These were Anshei Hashem, men of name, and we don't even know their names. They were so powerful and famous. Wise men , like Dr. Fauci, a very wise man, he has no knowledge … And that is the morning humility pill. As we said yesterday, the goal of the 40 days of the high holiday season is to get to the statement of What am I ? Our goal is to realize that we really don't do anything. We have no power. We have no wisdom. We have no wealth. It's all in the hands of God. What do we have? We have our Neshama Tehora, that pure soul that eventually is going to go up to God. And that soul ( in this prayer) is contrasted with the soul of the rest of the world) We, the Jewish people, we are Your nation, the sons of your covenant. The sons of Abraham that You love, that You promised at Har HaMoria, a son, that seed Yitzhak, that was bound in front of You on the Mizbe'ach, the Eidah/congregation of Yaakov, Your firstborn son, who You loved so much and enjoyed so much and gave him the name Yisrael, and Yeshurun. So who ar e we ? We're nobody on our own merits and our own acts. But do You know who my father is? That's an important line. Do You know who my father is ? That's what you're supposed to be thinking all the time. Wealthy kids sometimes say that when they get pulled over. I heard a story like that once. But the cop said, “I really don't care who your father is,” In our case, however, it makes a big difference. We start off every prayers with Elohei Avraham, Elohei Yitzhak, Elohei Yaakov. Do you know who my Father is? Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov. That's something. These are the important principles that we start our prayers with. And, as we said, they're important every day, but especially during the month of Elul, as we get ready for the high holidays. We have to appreciate these important principles that our rabbis put into the siddur for us. Have a wonderful day.
Rachel Cohen Yeshurun grew up in Montreal, where she attended an Orthodox girls' school, which taught that women should never actually hold a Torah scroll. These days, however, after she moved to Israel 30 years ago, she's not only breaking that rule regularly, but teaching other women in Israel to read from the Torah as well. Every month, she attends prayer sessions for Women of the Wall, an organization that advocates for women's right to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. She's been arrested more than once by Israeli police, though the country's Supreme Court has ruled that the women are not breaking any laws or causing any harm. They are making incremental progress, having won the right to wear prayer shawls and tefillin, though the rabbi in charge of the Wall still prohibits them from using Torahs or bringing their own. Still, each month, the Women of the Wall visit the holy site, only to be disrupted by ultra-Orthodox protestors who spit on, shove and whistle at the women. It's a scene that has been playing out for years—and now, after a particularly heated encounter on May 2, inflamed by the World Zionist Organization reportedly bussing in Haredi girls to protest, Cohen Yeshurun joins The CJN Daily to talk about what it's been like to fight for women's rights at one of the most sacred spots in Judaism. We continue to discuss how the Bet HaLevi says that Ahavat Yisrael is so important. He says, The success of the Jewish people is not dependent on any natural event. Rather, only through learning Torah, and connecting to God. And all of this is for naught without shalom. If you don't have shalom , you can't learn Torah and you can't connect to God. Therefore, shalom is necessary for Jewish success. As the pasuk says, וַיְהִי בִישֻׁרוּן מֶלֶךְ בְּהִתְאַסֵּף רָאשֵׁי עָם יַחַד שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ When there is a king in Yeshurun ( which means the Jewish people will come together) when the leaders gather together and the tribes gather together as well.” We say this pasuk on Rosh Hashanah as one of the ten pesukim of the Malchuyot/God is King section of the Musaf Amida . When is God king? When we are together. The Rosh says that when the Jewish people are together with brotherhood and friendship, then Hashem is King on us. But when we argue it's almost as if we are saying that God is not our King. God's kingdom is decided by our unity. Without our unity, God cannot connect Himself to us. There is a beautiful Seforno that points out that this process, as in the pasuk above, starts at the top- if the leaders are united. He points out that when the Nesi'im donated to the Mishkan in the desert, besides the jewels that they gave, they also donated six wagons. Every two tribes partnered up to donate a wagon together. Why couldn't they give twelve wagons? The Seforno explains that it was as a symbol of their brotherhood. In that way, the Shechina would come upon them, as the pasuk mentioned above says. They could have given twelve separate wagons, but they wanted to unite in their donations, and thus, be fit for the Shechina to come down. The Mishkan was there for the Shechina. So they wanted to show their unity in the donation. The same is true for the Mahasit Hashekel- everyone gave half shekel. This was not just symbolic. It meant that everybody was united and together. There's nothing more beautiful than two people partnering up for a dedication, because that shows the brotherhood. Neither is out for his own honor, they just want to be together. Have a wonderful day.
Yeshurun is not a proper name. It is a term of endearment used by God to endear Himself to His people, even when we have rebelled against the lavish overtures of His grace.

Abstract: Reorganization of the maternal brain, primed by oxytocin surge during childbirth, triggers the species-typical maternal social behavior. These brief social moments carry profound effects on the infant's social brain and likely have a distinct signature in the maternal brain. Utilizing a double-blind, oxytocin/placebo administration crossover design, we imaged mothers twice while observing three naturalistic maternal-infant contexts in the home ecology; "unavailable", "unresponsive", and "social", when mothers engaged in synchronous pick-a-boo play. We found four processes by which mother's brain registers social moments. Salience - social moments increased activations throughout the maternal brain network; Brain-behavior coupling - caregiving behavior linked with socially-driven neural response; Oxytocin sensitivity - administration impacted neural response mainly to the social context; and Temporal engrams-consistent temporal patterns in insula and TP characterized response to social play. Findings describe how mother's brain compiles and amplifies these precious social moments to generate dyad-specific brain-behavior patterns that initiate the cross-generational transmission of human sociality. In this episode we talk with Rachel Cohen Yeshurun of Women of the Wall in Israel who regularly reads the Torah at the Western Wall in defiance of law on the New Moon with other women. We talk about the history of why women haven’t been allowed to pray equally at the Wall, the role of the current government in that discrimination, and how it relates to Israeli LGBTQA rights. What does it mean to be able to pray together? Why is it important to have equality for all genders in religion? Note: This interview was recorded at the beginning of October. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get it released before the prayer times mentioned in the interview. However, Rachel does mention that the prayers at the Wall happen monthly, and that you’re welcome to join them on the new moon from wherever you are to pray in solidarity with them. Rachel Cohen Yeshurun was schooled at Bais Yaakov of Montreal and was active with Beth Ora Synagogue youth. Rachel made aliyah in 1989 but took 22 years to discover Women Of the Wall! She received a Bsc. in Mathematics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is currently studying towards a second degree in Computer Science. Rachel works as a computer programmer and is chair of Kehilla Masortit Ma’aleh Adumim. She was the chair of Women of the Wall, and more recently taking on the role of gabbait for the group.
