In the more than five decades that he was involved in Agudath Israel of America, rising from a member of their youth group to the Executive Vice President of the organization, Rabbi Shmuel Bloom encountered literally thousands of fascinating people: gedolei Yisrael, dedicated askanim, politicians from all sides of the political spectrum, and so many “just plain Jews” – who proved, by their actions, that there is no such thing as a “just plain Jew.” Rabbi Bloom met with gedolim at Agudah events, at meetings of the Moetzes Gedolei Torah, and in quiet, urgent conferences. He chatted with them in cars and on Shabbos afternoons at conventions. In this Inside ArtScroll interview, we hear stories from Rabbi Bloom, many of them not widely known, of generations of greatness. In these “stories behind the stories,” more of which you'll find in Rabbi Bloom's book, On the Shoulders of Giants, we gain a unique understanding of the inner workings of daas Torah, in all its glory. We also meet the Jewish people's askanim, up close and personal. Watch and be inspired. [Purchase the book HERE.]

Chofetz Chaim Shvat Cycle Day 4. The Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (1838-1933), was a prominent Talmudic scholar and leader of Orthodox Judaism in pre-war Poland. He is best known for his work on the laws of forbidden speech, or "Lashon Hara," which he compiled in his eponymous book, the "Chofetz Chaim." Rabbi Kagan was born in the small town of Zhetel, in the Grodno region of what is now Belarus. From a young age, he demonstrated a deep commitment to Torah study, and by the time he was 18, he had already become an accomplished Talmudic scholar. He later moved to the nearby town of Radin, where he spent the majority of his life. The Chofetz Chaim's most famous work, the "Chofetz Chaim," is a comprehensive guide to the laws of Lashon Hara (forbidden speech) and Rechilus (gossip or tale-bearing). The book is widely considered to be one of the most important works on the subject of ethical speech, and is still widely studied today. The book has been translated into many languages and is considered a classic in Jewish literature. In addition to his work on Lashon Hara, the Chofetz Chaim was also a leading authority on other areas of Jewish law and ethics. He wrote several other important works, including "Ahavas Chesed" (Love of Kindness), "Shemiras Halashon" (Guard Your Tongue), "Shemiras Halashon Harambam" (Guard Your Tongue According to the Rambam), and "Shmiras Halashon Yomi" (Guard Your Tongue Daily). The Chofetz Chaim was also a respected leader of the Jewish community in Poland, and he played a key role in the organization of the Agudath Israel movement. He was a strong advocate for Jewish education, and he established a network of yeshivas and other institutions to promote Torah study among Jews in Poland. Throughout his life, the Chofetz Chaim maintained a strict adherence to the principles of Torah and mitzvos, and he was known for his humility, piety, and selflessness. He lived a simple and modest lifestyle, dedicating himself entirely to the study of Torah and the betterment of the Jewish people. The Chofetz Chaim passed away on the 9th of Av, 1933 in Radin. The Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation was established in his memory, dedicated to the dissemination of his teachings and legacy. His teachings on the laws of Lashon Hara continue to be studied and followed by Jews all over the world, and his works remain an essential part of the Jewish literary canon. In conclusion, The Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan was a prominent Talmudic scholar and leader of Orthodox Judaism in pre-war Poland. He is best known for his work on the laws of forbidden speech, or "Lashon Hara," which he compiled in his eponymous book, the "Chofetz Chaim." The Chofetz Chaim was also a respected leader of the Jewish community in Poland, and he played a key role in the organization of the Agud.
Is Torah relevant as we go into the new year (not the Jewish new year, just the regular new year)? Afterall, this text was written over 3,000 years ago! How can something so literally ancient be applied to a world with social media, vaccines, gender studies, technology, and more? Rabbi Benzion Klatzko explains the world that we face today from the Jewish perspective. This fascinating dialogue brings about many questions and probably warrants for a 2-part episode. About Rabbi Klatzko: Rabbi Klatzko attended Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland and received his rabbinic ordination from Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York from Rabbi Shmuel Berenbaum, ZTL. Rabbi Klatzko accepted an offer to serve as Rabbi of the 14th ave Agudath Israel of Brooklyn, New York. After seven years of serving, he began a three year stint as the Rabbi of Shaarey Tzedek Congregation in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In 1999 saw the Klatzko family move to California so that he could accept the position of Campus Rabbi at UCLA, the first of hundreds of Olami rabbis who would work and live on campus. As a hands-on and loveable ambassador for the Jewish faith, he reconnected literally thousands of young Jewish men and women to their heritage. He also made an impressive splash in the broader Jewish community, earning the moniker “The Hollywood Rabbi.” Some of Hollywood's biggest stars and producers became regulars at his popular monthly class on Jewish thought. Beyond transforming lives at UCLA through JAM, Rabbi Klatzko's activities touched-off a revolution that profoundly changed the landscape of North American Jewry. Almost overnight, dozens of young rabbis throughout the country moved their families to campuses with high Jewish populations in an effort to reach out to the unaffiliated and curious. To this day, hundreds of young rabbis seek out Rabbi Klatzko's sagacious advice in an effort to glean some of his wisdom and experience. He currently serves as a Senior Director for Olami and in that capacity oversees and trains Jewish educators throughout North America. Rabbi Klatzko also founded the highly impactful “Akiva Trip” franchise with trips to Israel, Poland and New York Stateside. A person of indefatigable energy, Rabbi Klatzko is also a successful author (The Kuntrus / Moznaim Publications), noted public speaker, music producer, and Mohel. In 2010, Rabbi Benzion Klatzko founded the website Shabbat.com to facilitate shabbos and shidduch connections across the globe. Today, Shabbat.com is the largest Jewish Social Network in the world. Endorsed by the gedolim and active in 220 countries, 10,000 people a week take advantage of the Shabbat.com service. He is also the founder of many other projects to increase Jewish awareness and observance including the organizations Hisoriri (Hisoriri.com), Chazkeinu (Chazkeinu.org), Havdalah.com, Hashem.com, Illuminatethe World.com, LiveJudaism.com, WhyMarryJewish.com, OdYavo.org, and others. Rabbi Klatzko, his wife Shani, and their 11 children currently live in Monsey, New York, where hosting 70 or more people for Shabbos in the norm. He is proud to be counted among Rabbi Klatzko is one of Olami's “founding fathers” with 2 decades of service to campus outreach and Jewish life. Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Homnick -- the author of 23 sefarim on Shas and a longtime writer for The American Spectator -- passionately believed in Agudath Israel's mission. But in 1980, he argues, the organization missed a historic opportunity to cut itself loose from government purse strings. In the process, it began violating a Gemara whose penalty is nothing less than a delay in Moshiach's arrival.

Agudath Israel of America welcomes this historic development. Agudath Israel has long been on record opposing Roe v. Wade's legalization of abortion on demand. Informed by the teaching of Jewish law that fetal life is entitled to significant protection, with termination of pregnancy authorized only under certain, extraordinary circumstances, we are deeply troubled by the staggering number of pregnancies in the United States that end in abortion.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/yaar-ben-emmett/support

After many years of teaching, he wrote a 4,500 word essay in The Jewish Observer titled “An Ounce of Prevention” on the subject of at-risk teens in the community. It also led to the founding of Project Y.E.S. in 1997, which he is the director of In 1997, Horowitz founded a yeshiva, Yeshiva Darchei Noam, for teens. He worked with teens at risk for over 30 years. He is also the founder and Director of Project Y.E.S. (Youth Enrichment Services). He was a regular columnist for The Jewish Press and Mispacha on topics including mental health, social problems, internet usage and child safety. He developed a children's book to educate children about sexual safety called "Let's Stay Safe" published by Artscroll that sold many copies. One of the architects or American Orthodoxy and perhaps the greatest Orthodox rabbinical leader in that country of the 20th century, Rav Eliezer Silver (1886-1968) had a decisive impact on Jewish life. Through his communal rabbinical leadership, his national leadership on the American scene, through the organizations which he spearheaded and ran for decades, and of course his myriad efforts on behalf of Eastern European Jewry. Having studied under Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski in Vilna, Rav Yosef Rosen the Rogatchover in Dvinsk and Rav Chaim Brisker in Brisk, he then immigrated to the United States at the peak of the great immigration in 1907. He'd later be president of the Agudas Harabbonim, founder of Ezras Torah, founder of Agudath Israel of America, founder and president of Vaad Hatzalah and a constant man of action for almost every Jewish, educational and rescue undertaking during his long career. Oral Arguments for the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit
Agudath Israel of America v. Cuomo
Episode Notes Today we will have an open discussion about bad Supreme Court decisions and COVID in, “Not Necessarily the Good News.” Then, we learn about the prodigal son in, “The More You Know. NOT NECESSARILY THE GOOD NEWS: When we spoke last about the Supreme Court, it was in reference to the latest addition - at that time only a nominee - now a full fledged justice who is already on the wrong side of history and humanity with a couple of the court’s latest rulings. A phrase that is likely to make my heart sink numerous times over the coming years is “in a 5 to 4 decision” and it is with that phrase that we enter the deeply wrong rulings coming out from the court in favor of churches that have protested strict COVID measures. The arguments, first in a case from New York state brought by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Agudath Israel of America and then in a case from California brought by Pasadena-based Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry, which has churches across the state, were that the restrictions on gathering for worship were harsher than those on gathering to distribute food or provide shelter, two things that were often happening in the same buildings as where they seek to worship. https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/26/politics/supreme-court-religious-restrictions-ruling-covid/index.html https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/courts_law/supreme-court-california-coronavirus-church/2020/12/03/fcf4fcf8-357d-11eb-a997-1f4c53d2a747_story.html THE MORE YOU KNOW: Jesus was a story-teller. He taught very complicated ideas through simple, memorable parables. Sometimes, as we learned with, “The Good Samaritan,” the intention of his story gets lost in the re-telling, and, after so many years, acquires unintended new meanings. Most people think of the story of the Prodigal Son as the story of a lost son finding his way home. That’s just one part of the parable, and it has plot twists. The story is the last of three stories on a similar subject included in the fifteenth chapter of the Gospel of Luke. The parable of the lost lamb, of the lost coin, and the prodigal son, were used to address criticism from the Pharisees. The Pharisees, if you remember, were an influential religious party that mostly agreed with Jesus on matters of theology ( they believed in an afterlife, for instance ) but did not like his liberal interpretations of scriptures, or his disregard for their devotion to cultural tradition. We are told that Jesus had gathered an undesirable element in his public following. Since he would often bring crowds from the street into the temple, there may also have been the concern that these undesirables might come into the temple. The story starts this way, with a father and two sons, like the stories of Abraham and Issac/Ishmael, or Issac and Essau/Jacob. Over Thanksgiving break, the Supreme Court struck down New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s strict coronavirus related occupancy limits to 10 or 25 worshipers in churches and synagogues located in orange and red zones in the state. In a 5-4 per curiam decision, the majority sided with Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Agudath Israel, who argued that Cuomo’s COVID-19 regulations treated houses of worship differently from comparable secular institutions, especially considering the religious plaintiffs in question went above and beyond in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks within their doors. “From the standpoint of the plaintiffs,” David argues, “it’s sort of a double whammy of good facts. One, expressions of animus from public officials and hypocrisy from public officials. And two, they’re coming to the court with clean hands.” Later in the episode, David and Sarah also dive into a host of abortion related lawsuits and the U.S. census case before ending with some thoughts on election litigation. In a signing ceremony in Yerushalayim two weeks ago of the World Zionist Organization,a coalition that included the Orthodox Union, Yeshiva University, Touro College, Bnei Akiva, AMIT, the RCA, the National Council of Young Israel and Torah Mitzion resulted in Yaakov Hagoel, being named the organization's first religious Jew to serve as the Chairman of the Executive. The agreement signed distributed control over Zionist institutions and departments to a wide range of Jewish organizations and factions, from Orthodox to Reform and from Right to Left. This prompted Agudath Israel to issue a "Statement on Charedi Principles" explaining why they did not join and claiming that those who did were acquiescing to the dogmatic statements that were part of the The Jerusalem Program's foundations of Zionism which are:"Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, it brought about the establishment of the State of Israel, and a Jewish, Zionist, democratic and secure State of Israel is the common responsibility of the Jewish people for its continuity and future. The State of Israel and Jerusalem, its capital, is central in the life of our nation.Aliyah to Israel from all countries and the effective integration of all immigrants into Israeli society is a goal we must work for.Strengthening Israel as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state and shaping it as an exemplary society with a unique moral and spiritual character, marked by mutual respect for the multi-faceted Jewish people, needs to be inculcated to our children as something to constantly strive for.Eretz Yisroel's destiny is rooted in the vision of the prophets, striving for peace and contributing to the betterment of the world. We will ensure the future and the distinctiveness of the Jewish people by furthering Jewish, Hebrew and Zionist education, fostering spiritual and cultural values and teaching Hebrew as the national language;Despite being geographically spread throughout the world,we will nurture mutual Jewish responsibility, defend the rights of Jews as individuals and as a nation, and represent the national Zionist interests of the Jewish people, and struggle against all manifestations of anti-Semitism.We will do all in our power to further thesettling of the country as an expression of practical Zionism."The Agudah deems these ideas, which give such prominence to statehood as a rejection of Torah as the major factor that defines our people and in essence condemned persons identifying as Charedi for joining the group. New Jersey is the ninth state to legalize physician-assisted suicide. According to the state's Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act, attending physicians can “write a prescription for medication that would enable a qualified terminally ill patient to end his or her life.” The Act defines “terminally ill” as “the terminal stage of an irreversibly fatal illness, disease, or condition with … a life expectancy of six months or less.” Only the “physician who has primary responsibility for the care of a patient and treatment of a patient's terminal disease,” may write the life-ending prescription. And what happens if the doctor's conscience prevents him from writing the prescription? While the Act is clear that “any action taken by a health care professional to participate… shall be voluntary...” it also requires the “health care professional” to “transfer, upon request, a copy of the patient's relevant records to the new health care professional or health care facility.” So, while it would be far worse for New Jersey to coerce doctors to kill against their conscience, does honoring a patient's request and making a referral mean one is still complicit in his or her death? Or, to put it differently, is the law still forcing physicians who want nothing to do with physician-assisted suicide to participate? That is the opinion of Dr. Yosef P. Glassman. He recently filed suit to block implementation of the Act because he believes that being forced to refer patients to doctors who will kill them violates his religious beliefs. Dr. Glassman is particularly well-qualified to hold forth on his beliefs. Not only is he a physician specializing in the care of the elderly, he is also an Orthodox Rabbi. Glassman told the Jewish Link that he “was motivated to act by the chilling prospect of being a part of the suicide process, which strongly conflicted with both my professional and religious values.” After talking with several concerned Jewish community members on the topic, Glassman decided his work in geriatrics left him no choice but “to take a firm position.” “Some people who may oppose my action,” Glassman says, “may say that I want dying patients to suffer, chas v'shalom. Quite the opposite—we as physicians have ample tools to alleviate the suffering for the living, even for the terminally ill, without the need to license suicide.” That Hebrew phrase he used, chas v'shalom, means “Heaven forbid.” It reveals that just as Dr. Glassman is religiously motivated not to kill, he's also religiously motivated to heal and to alleviate suffering. In his mind, being forced to kill not only forces him to do what is wrong, it's an obstacle to doing what he's called to do. The good news is that a New Jersey state judge has issued an order preventing the law from taking effect until the religious freedom issues Glassman raised have been adjudicated. Still, Glassman's case is a reminder of the increasing pressure being put on medical professionals to participate in the “Culture of Death.” No matter how often advocates paint physician-assisted suicide and abortion as “compassionate” care, many doctors rightfully want nothing to do with them. This leaves the dilemma of to what degree unwilling physicians should be coerced to participate. Even if laws talk about “voluntary” participation, it's nearly impossible to avoid the machinery of death once it carries the force of law. Thankfully, physicians like Glassman are ethically coherent and willing to resist, and Jewish organizations like Agudath Israel are monitoring new laws like the one in New Jersey and are willing to help people like Dr. Glassman not violate their faith. More than a few Christian pastors could learn from the moral clarity of Dr. Glassman and the advocacy of Agudath Israel. No Christian should be coerced to participate in the culture of death. And no Christian who refuses to participate should find themselves alone in their courage. Chas v'shalom that Christians should be any less determined to fight against this “Culture of Death.”
Intimate Judaism: A Jewish Approach to Intimacy, Sexuality, and Relationships
In his recent analysis of the “#MeToo earthquake,” Rabbi Avi Shafran, Agudath Israel of America’s director of public affairs, bemoans the “supposedly enlightened, progressive, post-patriarchal society, with its proud claim to value and respect women,” and questions how we can expect men to respect women who dress and behave immodestly. In contrast, he asserts that sexual abuse is “relatively rare” in a society guided by Jewish law, where modesty and strict boundaries on gender interaction provide a carefully controlled environment, and women are valued and respected rather than objectified. In this episode of Intimate Judaism, Talli Rosenbaum and Rabbi Scott Kahn discuss Rabbi Shafran’s premise and his conclusion. While acknowledging the socio-cultural contrasts, they question the value of this self-idealization; though the mechanisms of abuse of power and authority may look different, objectification and victimization exist across cultures, and Orthodox Judaism is no exception. During the second half of the show, they are joined by Dr. Rachel Yehuda, an expert on trauma, who led a team of researchers who demonstrated that sexual abuse is indeed not a rare phenomenon in Orthodox society.
The deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue a week before the midterm elections has led to a debate on which types of responses are appropriate and which politicize a tragedy. And it’s also sparked a serious question that’s exposing divides within the Jewish community: if a climate of anti-Semitism is growing, who’s contributing to it? To what extent can an elected leader’s words contribute to violence? And what, if any, responsibility do they hold? We spoke with three representatives of Jewish organizations about the issue in separate interviews to get a variety of views. Rabbi Rachel Grant Meyer, director for education and community engagement at HIAS Rabbi Avi Shafron, director of public affairs for Agudath Israel of America, a national Orthodox advocacy organization Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block, the Washington director of the progressive Bend the Arc Jewish Action group
The Trump administration's policy (thankfully reversed by executive order) of separating parents and children at the US-Mexico border was cruel and inhumane, and violated basic Torah values. The Orthodox Union and, to an even greater degree, Agudath Israel of America, did the right thing by condemning this policy in clear and unambiguous terms. But what about the Orthodox Jews who support the policy - what Torah values are they advocating? When does support for Trump become a violation of Torah? Please subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes!
