October 5th, 2023 is Latina Equal Pay Day. What does this mean? It means Latinas have to work until this date to earn what their white-male counterparts made in 2022. For Latinas this is 57 cents to the full dollar of pay for equal work. In today's episode we talk through why this happens and what we can personally do to impact change. Are you comparing your life with the ones you see on Instagram? Does that leave you feeling like you're not doing enough? Or that something is missing in your life? I do! Today we talked to Yanely about this comparison trap... and how to end! I don't want to keep feeling shitty about my situation, especially when we realize that we probably aren't all working towards the same goals. Instead of continuing to buy stuff we don't want to impress people we don't know or because we think we need it to be happy, let's ask ourselves: what is it that I really WANT from MY life? Once you identify what this is, what we see on Instagram or what people say to us about what we don't have won't phase us. We know what we want and what we're doing to get there. About Yanely: Yanely was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and is one of the first in her family to graduate college. After two decades of school, she still can't believe that she never had a class about making smart money decisions! Now, she's on a mission to help young people learn about personal finance in a fun and engaging way! After completing Teach For America, Yanely paired her love for teaching with her passion for financial literacy, creating a unique YouTube channel for people to engage with topics like budgeting, managing credit, saving and investing for retirement and more! Yanely serves as the Director of Educational Outreach at Next Gen Personal Finance and is a member of CNBC's Financial Wellness Advisory Council. Today's episode breaks down THREE different "rules" — rules in quotes because at the end of the day, tu haces lo que te da la gana — on how much you should be spending on your housing costs. Whether it's the home you own or rent, yeah we don't want to be spending 100% of your paycheck on housing. Housing is one of the TOP expenses in a person's budget so it's important for us to understand how this is either helping or hurting us in reaching our short or long-term goals. We're bringing it back to the basics with today's episode on TRACKING YOUR EXPENSES! Yes, I literally mean tracking every single dollar that comes out of your pocket. Why? Well with a few months left of 2022, what better way to start then to take control of our money. Tracking my expenses was the FIRST step I took when I started my money journey in 2017 and it helped uncover a lot for me. When I knew exactly where my money was going, I could make a plan that was realistic and based on facts about what I was doing. This doesn't need to be something you do forever... But if you're just getting started OR need a reset, then tracking can be the way to go. Hope you enjoy the episode and if you're looking for an expense tracker to get you started, check out the one I created!

This week we have Kayla Castañeda, founder of Agua Bonita, joining us to share her story. For some of us, the decision about quitting our jobs to pursue our business full-time takes years or many attempts before actually doing so. For Kayla, the decision was made for her when her company went under in the early pandemic days and left her unemployed. When that happened, Kayla decided it was time to take a chance on herself and decided to start Agua Bonita with co-founder Erin PonTell. As of today, Agua Bonita has raised over 2 million in venture capital funding. For context, only 2.7 percent of all venture funding goes to women CEOs... Now think about what percentage of that goes to Latina CEOs. While working her corporate job after graduation, Liz realized she couldn't do that for the rest of her life. She had other desires and passions she wanted to explore that she put aside in college. That's when Liz made the decision to start painting on the side and continued to do so for the next three years. Eventually she knew she wanted to make the jump into creating art all day. She quit her job without telling anyone and that's where her painting career started. Liz Flores is a painter and muralist based in Chicago. Her work experiments with how the human condition—with its interplay between emotion and memory—can be represented abstractly. She engages everyday human experience and the female body by using shape, color and the human form as a mode of visual storytelling. Her mural work can be found throughout the Chicagoland Area and New York City. In addition to working with private and commercial clients like Target and the Chicago Bulls, her paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout Chicago and are driven by her interests in womanhood, belonging and inner life.
