This week, we wanted to look at how we stay motivated and productive, especially during the pandemic. We start out with our icebreaker question where we talk about recent moments and experiences that have brought us out of our comfort zones, made us uncomfortable, and something new we've been working on. Reflecting on our weeks is always a highlight of our discussions, as it's great to get some insight into what's going on in our lives. We then move on to discuss expression and personal identity among ourselves and among others. We talk about clothing, music, and hobbies and how they all contribute to who we are as people and as a collective society. Expression also plays into what productivity is and how that manifests in our lives. We talk about being productive during virtual learning and online activities, especially when there can be so many distractions all around us. Creating a space that works for you by surrounding yourself with objects that help you to fulfill your potential can create a positive environment for being productive. We also talk about goal setting and what it means to set short term and long term goals. This week, we wanted to dive into the multifaceted topic of how the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected so many parts of our lives, often gone unnoticed. It is no secret that the pandemic has touched all of our lives and we wanted to take the time to highlight these insecurities and give space to discuss them. We start off by talking about a few positives from the pandemic and contrasting them with how we've been personally affected by COVID. We reflect on our experiences and start to discuss the basics of what homelessness is and define poverty within our respective cities. Using statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, we learn which communities are primarily affected by homelessness and discuss ways we can help the situation. We talk about how Black communities need our attention and the necessity to discuss homelessness within the context of racism. Socioeconomic status and health are also heavily correlated and play large roles in this discussion. We take a minute to debunk the ways the US healthcare system is intertwined with access to privatized quality insurance. This is a topic we'll be working to explore more in the coming months, so stay tuned! We also reflect on other ways the pandemic has affected society. In talking about the current job scene, we highlight the inconsistencies in payment, especially towards women and people from minority backgrounds. The wage gap has been an ever persistent concern in society, but the pandemic gives employers more of an opportunity to prey and capitalize on their employees. Lastly, we touch on social anxiety and the fears that people have during public interactions. This topic of mental health is incredibly important and we look forward to talking about it more soon. Following our One Year Anniversary episode last week, we wanted to continue providing quality content starting off with a dive into Animal Cruelty. This episode takes a different approach at some of our former episodes such as our Meat Industry episode with Maya Eisengart. After a riveting and high energy icebreaker question on which animals represent each other, we define what animal cruelty actually is. We also discuss a few statistics that really put the entire topic into perspective. For example, did you know that every 60 seconds an animal is abused? Did you know that 95% of a circus animal's life is spent in a cage? With the numbers in mind, we talk about animal cruelty by commission vs. animal cruelty by omission. Another vital part of Animal Cruelty is really breaking down how it can manifest and the ways Animal Cruelty is ever-present. We touch on this for a minute as we speak on types of cruelty. Another key aspect of Animal Cruelty is learning why animals are exploited and what they are exploited for. To end on a high-note, we talk about how we can help this cause and some action steps we can collectively take against it. We are so excited to be sharing this milestone with all of our listeners as we provide exclusive Instagram content, our brand new Newsletter, and this one-of-a-kind commemorative episode! To kick off this episode, we reminisce on why we started our podcast with the goal of creating a community. We speak to how much of a journey this entire experience has been before sharing some hilarious behind the scenes moments! It is so humbling to look back and reflect on our early episodes which have really shaped our podcast today. We then take a walk down memory lane and highlight a few iconic Dive Right In episodes. We first highlight our episode with MILCK where we discuss empowerment, what speaking to MILCK was like, and even listen to a snippet of her episode. We also laugh about some good memories we made while recording with MILCK. It was truly and incredible experience. Next, we look back on our episode with Sophie Frieden, a remarkable Jewish advocate. We highlight how we have grown through interviewing Sophie and the impact she had on our podcast. Our episode with David Leopold was also one for the highlight reel. We take a moment to reflect on how we were feeling gearing up for our episode on immigration with David and how cool it was to talk with him. The last segment we highlight is from Loralei Cook as we discuss the importance of having an episode dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and how we continue to talk about the episode to this day. A special tribute is also given to Honest + Jazzy and how that prepared us to take the leap to rebrand. It was so fun to look back on all these episodes and talk about the podcast as a whole! In honor of our one year anniversary of Dive Right In Podcast next week, we have been working hard to put out a newsletter discussing our journey, what we have learned, and what is to come in the next couple of months! Please be sure to text, email, or DM us your email so that you can receive it in your inbox! This week, we speak with Raya Al Weshah, a Hijabi born in Jordan and now a sophomore at Beachwood High School, to talk about her experiences with Islamophobia and why she is passionate about being Muslim. Before we get into the interview, we address Yom HaShoah which translates to "Holocaust Remembrance Day", and it is when we take some time to remember each and every one of the lives lost during the Holocaust. Transitioning off from that important discussion, we acknowledge how even though Jews and Muslims are often pinned against each other in the media, this is definitely a stereotype and we are still able to learn about and celebrate the Muslim culture. We then welcome in Raya to introduce herself and talk about her story and heritage. She mentions that while she has never been a victim of outright Islamophobia, she has definitely heard micro-aggressions targeted at her because of her religion and because she wears a hijab. We then make sure to talk about the recent French legislation which prevents Muslim women and young adults from wearing a hijab and participating in basic activities and services. Raya talks about how this made her feel and the toll this took on the Muslim community worldwide. "What we need to recognize is that we're in the 21st century and no one should be living in fear of gun violence. When will lawmakers open their eyes and recognize the necessary steps our country needs to take towards peace? This starts with us." -Jackie and Hannah Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! For this week's episode, we kick off our episode by highlighting our own Jewish culture and talking a little bit about the holiday of Passover. There's a saying that goes "In each generation, we have to see ourselves as if we personally went free from Egypt". Keeping this spirit of Yetziat Mitzrayim alive, we break the ice by talking about things we're hoping to rid ourselves of in the coming months. Whether you are Jewish or not, this is an interesting question to think about, and we look forward to hearing your answers! Continuing with this idea of freedom, we jump into our main topic for the week starting with discussing the drastic increase of hate crimes and gun violence in our society. We discuss our frustrations with the current police system and talk about the importance of mental health. With a conversation centering on why lawmakers need to allocate more funding to mental health resources, we talk about the moral implications of weaponry and taking a stand against gun violence. We move into breaking down different types of gun violence and discussing what actions we can take to put an end to these horrific acts. Ending on a positive note, we highlight President Joe Biden's plan to implement more background checks, buyback programs, and take steps towards ending this violence. We wanted to remind everyone to like, rate, and share this episode with all of your friends and family, and continue to do your part by wearing a mask! Thanks for tuning in! For this week's episode, we kick off our new monthly series where we invite guests on to talk a bit about their cultures and heritages. Before we jump into these conversations, we discuss some of the recent events that have occurred over the past week including the devastating mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado on March 22nd which killed 10 people. We wanted to take some time to remember the innocent lives lost, and we encourage you all to educate yourselves and those around you on what is going on throughout our country. Transitioning right over, we introduce Edalix Marin, a friend of Jackie's, and we speak with her about Colombian and Venezuelan cultures as well as some current events going on in both of these countries. Edalix concludes the conversation by discussing what makes her proud of her heritage and Latine background. We then introduce Aryana Petti, to discuss specifically her Persian heritage and the Persian culture as a whole. We make sure to address Persian New Year (Nowruz) which takes place on the spring equinox. Both of these conversations were very informational and taught us a lot about each other and where we come from. “We don't need to feel guilty for our privilege, but we need to use it to help others." Natalie Carnoy Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! This week, we wanted to do a deep dive into the ways in which the pandemic has affected so many aspects of society that often go unnoticed. We start off by talking about the recent Atlanta shooting which targeted the AAPI (Asian American, Pacific Islander) community. The unjust treatment of the AAPI community has directly been correlated to Former President Trump's perpetuation of Xenophobic rhetoric following his proclamation blaming COVID-19 on the Asian community. Seeing how unfair and unjust this is, we wanted to talk about our responsibility as allies to stand up against Xenophobia and work to #EndAsianHate. We also talk about gun control and the importance of speaking up for more understanding, love, and community. Shifting our perspective, we define our terms to gear up for a conversation with Natalie Carnoy on Food Insecurity and how that has become more prevalent during the pandemic. During the discussion with Natalie, we talk about what a Food Desert is and who it disproportionately affects. We look into SNAP and WIC benefits and also learn about what we can do to address the issue. Through these ideas, we bring up the topics of equality and intersectionality which play a huge role in who we each are individually. Since it has been around seven months since our Girl Power miniseries, we wanted to take a different approach at this topic. As two young girls, gender inequality is something that we are both very passionate about, and we wanted to share our revised opinions now knowing new terms, definitions and of course, having had much personal growth over the past few months. After defining our terms, we answer this week's icebreaker question: Why do you think girl power and female empowerment is important? Please feel free to email us your own answers to this question and we will be sure to feature it in our next episode! For the (beyond) meat of our episode, we invite Noa DeBasc to share her opinions and to give another perspective on what these terms actually mean. After referencing Fascism in E. 38 about the Capitol Insurrection, we wanted to take a step back and work on defining our terms. Through our icebreaker question and current events update, we discuss the mindset and thought process that many Extremists have and how scary the rash and unknown are. We also touch on Environmental Warfare in relation to Middle Eastern politics. Stay tuned for more to come on this topic! Following this interesting discussion, we transition into talking about Fascism and its history. Additionally, we touch on what Fascism advocates for and how their extreme actions lead to more conflict, especially by counter-protesters such as Antifa. Focusing on Antifa, we discuss the role it plays in furthering violence and how it correlates to Anarchism. We discuss the sad reality of doxxing which both ends of the political spectrum partake in, and we highlight the ways in which the media perpetuates violence. Moving into discussing the QAnon Conspiracy group, we talk about what QAnon is, its origins, and their methods for drawing in supporters. Through learning about the role idolizing Former President Trump plays in QAnon conspiracy theories, we move into highlighting other popularized political conspiracies that have swept the media. "This is such a prevalent form of crime and it is clearly such a big industry, but one of the things that is so devastating about it is that most people I have talked to don't even know what it is." -Jackie and Hannah This week, we discuss the global epidemic of Human Trafficking and the response that we have as advocates. It is a heavier episode, so we encourage you to tune into a different episode if this topic may be triggering for you. With that being said, we also urge you to check in with your friends and family members to ensure they are safe and healthy as well. We discuss our initial and current feelings towards Human Trafficking and then work our way to reflecting on some survivor stories and discussing ways to help, even from a distance. Following that, we talk about the Dressember movement and the idea of femininity. Allyship is a huge idea that we dive into as well and we discuss how our actions influence the society around us. Becoming educated on tough subjects is a great first step in stopping Human Trafficking and finding ways to bring more hope and acceptance into dark places. We hope you'll join us in bringing awareness to Human Trafficking!
