Every February, the United States celebrates Black History Month. But this year, the celebration might feel a bit different. On January 31st, the Department of Defense announced it would no longer use official resources to celebrate cultural awareness months, including Black History Month, which began the following day. That announcement came after the Trump administration's rollback of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives within the federal government. This hour, we’re joined by a panel of experts to talk about Black History Month and what it means today. GUESTS: Kevin Gaines: Julian Bond Professor of Civil Rights and Social Justice and Interim Director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia. Christina Greer: Associate Professor of Political Science at Fordham University Michael Harriot: founder of ContrabandCamp and bestselling author of Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America In this episode, the guests mention several Black Americans who have made an impact on U.S. history. Send us a textKendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show left many talking, but was it a masterstroke of cultural commentary or just another performance? We unravel the layers of symbolism, from Kendrick's subliminal jabs at Drake to the cultural gravitas that Samuel L. Jackson and Serena Williams brought to the stage. Our chat isn't just about music, though. We speculate on who in the rap game could stand toe-to-toe with Kendrick in a battle, with names like Eminem, Nas, and Jay-Z tossed into the ring. And let's not forget the smooth sounds of SZA, whose touch added a unique flair to the show that resonated with audiences far and wide.Celebrating Black History Month, we tip our hats to African-American pioneers in the automotive industry and beyond. With figures like Garrett Morgan and C.R. Patterson leading the charge, we reflect on their legacy and impact. Our talk takes a turn into the intricacies of loyalty and relationships in high-profile circles, analyzing the drama between 50 Cent, Big Meech, and Rick Ross. It's a peek into how personal and professional alliances play out amidst public scrutiny, and what it means to truly support one another. For a lighter touch, we dive into the world of celebrity feuds and outlandish antics. Soulja Boy's unexpected diss track against Marlon Wayans sparks laughter and thoughtful discussion on generational battles in the spotlight. Meanwhile, Kanye West's latest escapades, from Grammy grievances to wild theories about his wife's public persona, provide plenty of fodder for discussion. As we round off our episode, we sprinkle in a dash of TV drama, wedding speculation, and the cultural importance of supporting Black businesses during Juneteenth cookouts, ensuring a perfect blend of humor and cultural insight.FOLLOW. Before Garrett Morgan became a successful inventor and saved countless lives with his creations, he was a little boy with a head full of ideas on how to make life better for everyone. At a tumultuous time filled with racism and discrimination, Garrett became a prominent business man and skilled inventor who produced the traffic signal, a gas mask, and others objects still used today. This second book from the award-winning children's film series founded by Karyn Parsons, Sweet Blackberry, comes a little-known story about a man whose talent would be a gift to the world. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/avant-garde-books/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/avant-garde-books/support
Origins of the Yellow LightThe origin of the yellow caution light is somewhat ambiguous. A narrative exists crediting William Potts, a Detroit policeman, with integrating a yellow light into traffic signals on November 20th, 1920, to indicate an impending change. However, it is also on this date in 1923 that Garrett Morgan's patent emerges, adding to the historical puzzle.Policeman William Potts engineered the first three-color traffic signals to address Detroit's early automotive era. Red light violations became increasingly problematic due to congested streets filled with cars, horses, and carts. Officer Potts introduced an intermediate warning phase now universally recognized as the yellow light. This innovation was subsequently integrated into global traffic systems.Today Commemorates a century since Garrett Morgan's patent for his traffic signal—a precursor featuring a cautionary phase allowing all directions to stop—highlights this enduring challenge. Morgan's innovation aimed to curb impatience among motorists, exemplified by honking at green lights—a behavior still present today.Morgan's invention emerged during the nascent days of widespread automobile ownership in America when chaotic traffic conditions prevailed due to inexperienced drivers and diverse modes of transportation sharing roadways. After witnessing a traumatic accident, Morgan crafted a T-shaped mechanical signal that could be manually operated, distinctively incorporating an all-clear interval before movement resumed—the predecessor of today's yellow light.Morgan's patent acknowledged that this feature would mitigate collisions caused by drivers' eagerness at signal changes. His design was particularly relevant during an era lacking widespread electricity, offering flexibility for varying urban settings. Following public demonstrations in Ohio and General Electric's acquisition of Morgan's patent for $40,000, his concept laid the groundwork for modern traffic control systems designed with safety as a paramount concern.Understanding the yellow signal is crucial for drivers. A steady yellow light indicates an imminent switch to red; drivers already in the intersection should continue cautiously, while those approaching should prepare to stop if safely possible. A flashing yellow advises drivers to proceed through intersections with heightened awareness and reduced speed. The steady yellow arrow warns of limited time to clear the intersection, permitting passage only when safe, although its usage is not uniform across all states. The newer flashing yellow arrow allows drivers to proceed without halting but mandates yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians—typically transitioning to a steady yellow or green arrow.Appropriately timed yellow lights prevent accidents, particularly since over 20% of traffic collisions occur at intersections. Road speed limits influence these timings; for example, a road with a 55-mile-per-hour limit requires a longer yellow phase than one with a 45-mile-per-hour limit to accommodate safe deceleration. Insufficiently timed lights can lead to rear-end collisions and red light running. Traffic management entities worldwide strive to optimize these intervals, considering factors such as urban density and traffic volume. For those interested in the evolution of traffic signals and their future adaptations for autonomous vehicles, further exploration will be available on "No Driving Gloves." An upcoming episode will delve into the potential introduction of a fourth signal color designed to facilitate self-driving technology. so be sure to subscribe to hear more about this and many other facets of the automotive realm.www.nodrivingloves.com#cars #car #collectorcars #oldcars #cartalk #electriccars #ev #hotrod #carhistory #automotivehistory #automobile...

Garrett Morgan's descendants hope a DNA test will prove what the family has believed for more than a century - that the inventor is the grandson of Confederate Col. John Morgan, of the Civil War's "Morgan Raiders." But even without that distinction, Garrett earned his place in history for designing the three-light traffic signal, and a gas mask he used to rescue men trapped in a Cleveland tunnel. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Music: Audionautix- The Great Unknown, and The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. To celebrate Black History Month, this episode honors Garrett Morgan, an African American with ideas that changed the world.
This week on the FiredUp Podcast: We explore the continued downward trend in Covid hospitalizations and deaths, slowly driving the numbers to a manageable level. We are tired of Covid and its impacts. No arguments. We are making progress but still have a good way to travel. Compare with Australia at 97% vaxxed, Israel 90+ %. We need to remain diligent in our effort to combat the virus, but we have a good start. We take a look at some of the elements of Black History and its influence on American History. Individuals like Granville Woods, Lewis Latimer, Garrett Morgan and Elijah McCoy among others. Many of these inventions were things that improved everyday tasks and processes mostly through automating processes that were performed by African American and other workers, usually tedious jobs. We are announcing an addition to our show goals and direction. You know that we have so-called “call to action” segments on our show, now we are adding “Practicing Activism” to our tools. Actionable procedures that we need to do to promote real change. More to come, stay tuned. What do you think of when you hear the name “The Black Panther Party”? Did you know that they provided early-childhood education, free breakfast to children, second-hand clothing, health care, free clinics and other social services? “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” -Martin Luther King Jr. This week, we dedicate the entire episode to discussing Black History month and giving a platform to Black historical figures who have and have not been given the recognition they deserve. We want to emphasize that as two white females, we are not at all trying to take the spotlight away from people of color to share their stories, but rather to amplify their voices and the voices of those who are unable to speak out and raise awareness. Before jumping into Black History, we talk briefly about National Eating Disorders Awareness Week which spans from February 22nd to February 28th, 2021. Additionally, we discuss celebrating Purim during this time and how important it is to seek out joy in our everyday lives. Transitioning into the (beyond) meat of the episode, we touch on historical figures such as Audre Lorde, Amelia Boynton Robinson, Fritz Pollard, Jesse Owens, Alice Coachman, Garrett Morgan, Claudette Colvin, and Ruby Bridges who have all made such a positive impact on the world we live in today. While these are some of the Black historical figures who have had a big impact on today's society, these are not nearly all of the people who deserve recognition for the brave work they did and continue to do. Please make sure to continue your own research and learn about people you have never heard of before. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode, stay safe and wear a mask! Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, focuses on making cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. This is significant, as currently half of the global population, or 3.5 billion people, live in cities today, and a projected 5 billion people, or 60% of the world's population will live in cities by 2030. SDG 11 is one of the two foundational SDGs of Healthy Cities in the SDG Era, alongside SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing. Throughout the series, we'll explore the ways that these SDGs intersect with other goals, including gender equality, education, reducing inequalities, zero hunger, and climate action. As industry accelerated in Cleveland during the 1880s and 1890s, the pace of industrial accidents--all too often fatal--also picked up. The newspapers of the day gave brief but vivid accounts of workplace accidents. The ore docks seem to have been particularly dangerous, but fatal accidents took place in factories of all kinds. Larger industrial disasters also took place. Some of those disasters are little remembered today--such as a riverbed accident that claimed the lives of 16 ore dock workers in July 1896. One of the most dramatic industrial accidents in Cleveland history was the water tunnel explosion of 1916. 20 lives were lost as tunnel workers, firemen, policemen, doctors, tugboat crew members, the janitor on the crib, and African American inventor Garrett Morgan were all swept up in desperate rescue attempts. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Join us for the first installment of our series “The Observer Effect”. In this series, we will explore histories connected to some of the lesser known or under-researched items in the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History's collections. To kick off this series, we are talking about an often overlooked inventor, businessman, and hero named Garrett Augustus Morgan. Born in the American South in 1877 to formerly enslaved parents, this gentleman would become the first African American in Cleveland to own a car thanks to his brilliant intellect, entrepreneurial spirit, and sheer will power! As the inventor of early prototypes for both the gas mask and the modern stoplight, Garrett Morgan saved countless lives with his dedication to public safety.
I read a bit from Black Rednecks and White Liberals which points out that perhaps the reason why anti-Irish sentiment went away was because the Irish changed. I offer my hypothesis as to why the Polish were thought stupid. Then I tell the story of a fascinating man, Garrett Morgan. Morgan invented the first good gas mask which he used to save 29 men suffocating below Lake Erie in 1916. Morgan was later the pioneer of traffic signals, embellished his own triumphs, discovered a hair-straightening solution and marketed skin-bleaching to blacks. He was discriminated against, but in the end he was acknowledged a hero.
The cuzzies come in HOT! The first 15 minutes was just too crazy to air, but Chrissy's back from the Impractical Jokers Cruise and back in Yanni's lap! We get into the screwed-in kid Garrett Morgan, the unsung hero of black history and innovation, his legacy and why we think he's looked over!
