Mickey Mouse's first week in the public domain got weird, fast; the researchers using satellites and radar to measure the destruction in Gaza; the future of Broadway as movie remakes and jukebox musicals threaten to take over; and democracy at risk as more than half the world goes to vote in 2024.
On today's podcast, Tara and Stephanie discuss a recent episode of Andy Frisella's Real AF podcast where he talked about the connection between Operation Trust and Qanon. Your hosts give a brief background on Operation Trust and delve into some details on Qanon, including the theory that it's part of the NSA. They also speculate on Trump's level of knowledge and involvement. Is good going to triumph over evil or are we all just being duped? Don't ever visit a strip club in Houston - for biblical reasons - and also because odds are, the girls you'd be watching there are likely the victims of human trafficking across the border - how cases like that bust wide open the myth that Sound of Freedom was just a QAnon conspiracy. Plus, Florida governor Ron DeSantis takes down his second Soros D.A. Then, age verification laws are shutting down Pornhub in multiple states. This week's episode features a conversation with conspiracy theory expert Mike Rothschild, author of the excellent 2021 book The Storm is Upon Us: How QAnon Became a Movement, a Cult, and a Conspiracy Theory of Everything. We begin at the beginning: what is the appeal of conspiracy theories in general, and why are so many people attracted to them historically? Conspiracy theories are nothing new, and have been around for as long as humans can remember. QAnon, it turns out, is a rehash of a number of extant and time-tested conspiracy theories, tropes, memes and more. Has it gone away, now that Trump is no longer president? Why are so many evangelicals still hooked on the movement? And finally, if you have a friend or family member who's been sucked into the Q Universe, can you get them out? Much of the world is on edge this week over the prospect of an actual war in Europe, if Russia moves against its neighbour Ukraine. But for almost two decades, Russia under Vladimir Putin has been engaged in a culture war with what he sees as an 'increasingly decadent west.' Professor Marlene Laruelle explains.

Conspiracy theories have always been with us, but as the Covid-19 pandemic swept around the world in March 2020 they exploded in popularity as misinformation flooded to fill the vacuum of uncertainty. They quickly expanded to include everything from Covid conspiracies and paedophile rings to anti-vaxx sentiments, presenting governments and scientists with a tough nut to crack as they sought to convince ordinary people that they had their best interests at heart. Aoife Gallagher is an expert in how such theories spread and flourish online and she joined me to talk about how such movements work and grow - and what might be done to stop them.

Come with us down the rabbit hole as we head back to conspiracies this week, as Dawn enlightens Jade and Taby on the many aspects of the QAnon Conspiracy theories. It's beginnings, multiple side tangents and where they are now. We also manage to offend Trump supporters, Jehovah Witnesses, Seventh Day adventists and Mormons. Sorry, not sorry. We'll leave you with one of Tabys favorite Terry Pratchett Quotes“There were plotters, there was no doubt about it. Some had been ordinary people who'd had enough. Some were young people with no money who objected to the fact that the world was run by old people who were rich. Some were in it to get girls. And some had been idiots as mad as Swing, with a view of the world just as rigid and unreal, who were on the side of what they called 'the people'. Vimes had spent his life on the streets, and had met decent men and fools and people who'd steal a penny from a blind beggar and people who performed silent miracles or desperate crimes every day behind the grubby windows of little houses, but he'd never met The People.People on the side of The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people. As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up. What would run through the streets soon enough wouldn't be a revolution or a riot. It'd be people who were frightened and panicking. It was what happened when the machinery of city life faltered, the wheels stopped turning and all the little rules broke down. And when that happened, humans were worse than sheep. Sheep just ran; they didn't try to bite the sheep next to them.” Taby's recommended reading, Night Watch - Terry Pratchett, Earth - David Brin, The Harlott by the side of the Road - Jonathan KirschDon't forget to like and follow us on all our platforms.Facebook: The-maid-the-mother-and-the-otherInstagram: @maidmotherotherTwitter: @MotherOtherEmail: maidmotherother@gmail.com

This week's episode is the second, concluding part of our series reviewing concepts and topics from last season. (If you haven't yet listened to part 1, you can find it here.)In part 2 of our re:verb “re:cap,” we rekindle the critical ideas brought up in episodes 6 through 9. First, we build upon our discussion of urban renewal and gentrification from episodes 6 & 7, talking through the ongoing transparency controversy at the heart of Pittsburgh's “bid” for Amazon HQ2, the economistic frames used by both proponents and opponents of the bid, and the difficulty of staging place-based resistance to massive corporate entities like Amazon. Then, we examine two cases that exemplify people's affective & emotional attachments to evidence (a call-back to Jenny Rice's work, discussed in episode 8): the liberal-left split over #Russiagate and the cryptic, all-encompassing, extremely-online #QAnon conspiracy. We go on to discuss the brilliant treatment of language ideology (a concept previously covered in episode 9) in the film Sorry to Bother You (Boots Riley, 2018), particularly its depiction of code-switching and “white voice.”Finally, we reflect on some of the unresolved tensions across all of our conversations on the show so far: rhetorics of “the future,” certainty vs. uncertainty, the role of aesthetics in rhetoric, and the relationship between language and power.Previous episodes discussed:Episode 6: How do spaces and places function in resistance movements? (Rhetorics of Place: Part 1) (w/ Derek Handley & Liana Maneese)Episode 7: What are the economic, social, and political forces fueling gentrification? (Rhetorics of Place: Part 2) (w/ Scott Riess)Episode 8: What can conspiracy theories teach us about how we use "evidence"?
