In this episode I'm joined by Meghan Patrick.   The Canadian born, Nashville resident is a Juno and CCMA winning singer & songwriter, who's latest release is a song that prompted us to have a deep and meaningful conversation unlike any other I've had on the podcast.   Her song, ‘The Boy Who Cried Drunk' is a very personal journey through Meghan's experience with Domestic Violence.    Having recently met Meghan at the CCMA's, where she shared about her new song, I immediately wanted to have her on the podcast so that we could share our stories in the hopes that it can help anyone who may currently be in an abusive relationship.   We talk of our experiences, as well as how the journey is frequently very similar from case to case, and how you are not alone in this. The statistics are astounding. The one thing that shook me and really helped me to manage my situation was hearing that, on average it takes the victim, on average, 7 times to try to leave. For me this was entirely true, and helped to alleviate the shame and guilt I felt when I kept going back.   Today we also celebrate what Meghan refers to as Part 2 to ‘The Boy Who Cried Drunk' with her follow up single ‘God and a Good Man' her story of hope and the love and life that is waiting for you.   Although not overly graphic, this episode is a deeper topic that requires listener discretion and may contain triggers for some listeners, however, the biggest thing this episode does contain is hope. The fact Meghan and I are both now in happy and in loving, safe and healthy relationships we are here to show you that with the right support, your recovery and a very happy life is entirely possible.   If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to your local authorities, or use the links below to find the guidance and support you need.     If you are local to Calgary, Homefront is an incredible resource and they helped me hugely. https://homefrontcalgary.com/   Some international resources can be found here: https://www.domesticshelters.org/resources/national-global-organizations   The book Meghan recommends is: The Gift of Fear – Gavin De Becker https://www.amazon.ca/The-Gift-of-Fear/dp/0316235776     Sometimes when you are in the situation, you have become numb to how serious it is. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your local authorities if you are in danger or fear for your safety. Follow and support Meghan on her Instagram @megpatricmusic or by visiting her website.

Award-Winning Canadian Country singer/songwriter Alexis Taylor is just getting started. The Canadian singer and songwriter was born and raised in the small town of Huntsville, Ontario. From a young age, Alexis' powerhouse vocals combined with emotional lyrics showcased her creativity and love for music in every song. From sharing the stage with The Marshall Tucker Band , Love and Theft , Meghan Patrick and Doug Seegers , triple threat artist/singer/songwriter, Alexis Taylor has quickly established herself as one of country music's rising stars. Following the release of her first single in 2018, Alexis has appeared live on numerous radio stations and tv stations throughout North America. She has been a part of events such as Canadian Music Week in Toronto, CMA Fest in Nashville, and has performed at the USO Northwest Gala in both 2018 and 2019. The release of her first single also lead to Alexis winning Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2018 Tennessee Music Awards , and would be the first of many nominations and awards to be won in Alexis' career. At the beginning of 2022, Alexis reached #36 on the Sirius XM CBC Country radio charts with her release "Long Way From Home" - A story of Alexis' journey in the music industry. However, Alexis' newest release "Let Me Leave" which was produced by Taylor Carroll (drummer for American rock band LIT), and vocals recorded by Dave Aude (known for more number ones than any other producer on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart) is sure to be an even bigger success. With big plans to get back into the studio before 2023, there is no telling what accomplishments this Nashville girl will see in the year ahead.

There are plenty of apt adjectives that apply to Meghan Patrick. But perhaps the most meaningful descriptor for the acclaimed country singer/songwriter is authentic.Patrick is a musician who always tells it like it is in a voice as gorgeously persuasive as they come.  So, when she describes her electrifying third full-length studio album, Heart on My Glass, as “the most ‘me' record I've ever made,” it's a profound statement given the sincerity that has come before. It's also a handy metaphor for summing up the new album's many sonic textures and flavors, some familiar to long-time listeners and others new— blues and gospel, anyone? — but all yanked straight from Patrick's rich reservoir of influences.Funny what a pandemic year spent hunkering down in a town like Nashville will do for your music.“This is a special record for me for a lot of reasons,” Patrick confirms. “I had so much more time over the past year to focus on writing and really being able to dig into what my sound and message should be. This feels like the most all-encompassing representation of me as a writer, an artist, and a human. All the pieces fell into place.”www.GaryScottThomas.com

Also, part of the win was a recording deal with Warner Music Canada, which saw the release of his debut single "Loved You Like That" which has garnered over 1.5 million streams to date.  Off stage, Kris has been raising funds for mental health and PTSD in the Veteran and First Responder community. Partnering with Wounded Warriors Canada, Kris was able to raise four thousand dollars in 2020 for their programs.  The new single from Kris is called "More Than Whiskey" written by Meghan Patrick, Aaron Goodvin & Skip Black. Kris recently opened up a few shows for Meghan.

Manitoba's Kendra Kay is here to chat about her new song "Homegrown Heart". The 2 x MCMA Female Artist of the Year winner has had the opportunity to spend more time on her family ranch in the past two years than she has in a long time. As a songwriter, she felt naturally inspired to write about it. This is how her new single Homegrown Heart was born. “This song is my story – it is inspired by my roots, life and family. I wrote it to tell the story of who I am, and from the idea that everyone has that little piece of home, it is a universal feeling. When I am not out on the road touring, I am on the road barrel racing or at home working with my horses and that feels like home for me. I know there are so many people out there that will connect with this song and feeling, no matter where they call home,” says Kendra. When the reigning MCMA Fans' Choice Award winner (Kendra won in 2020 & 2021) was unable to tour with her band, she turned to another passion. She loaded up her horse and hit the road for a different reason. Kendra joined the rodeo circuit which led to winning a Championship Buckle for Barrel Racing! Kendra continues to grow her audiences as she achieves 1 million global streams, has had music videos placed in rotation on CMT Australia, and embarked on tour dates across Western Canada. She hit the road armed with her 5-piece band, playing major events such as the Calgary Stampede, Red River Exhibition Fall Fair and the Ponoka Stampede to name a few. When Kendra isn't working on the ranch, out on the road with her horse or touring with her band she is recording new music, cutting tracks from an impressive list of writers including Carly Pearce, Maren Morris and Meghan Patrick. Homegrown Heart was written by Kendra & Tyler Del Pino and produced by award-winning producer Murray Pulver.

Meghan Patrick was down to her last few dollars when she landed the record deal that would change her life forever. “I was so broke I had to borrow gas money just to get to the signing,” she says with a laugh. “I was still driving my first car, a used pickup truck, and it died right when I pulled into the parking lot at Warner Music Canada. It felt like the end of an era, like the truck was saying, ‘This is where I leave you.'” Now, Patrick's landed herself another high profile record deal, this one with American label Riser House, and, fittingly enough, she's poised to make her highly-anticipated US debut with a tribute to that faithful old truck. Recorded with producer Jeremy Stover (Justin Moore, Eli Young Band), “My First Car” offers up a perfect introduction Patrick's infectious blend of southern rock and classic country, packing the breakout Canadian star's life story into three infectious minutes of pure FM radio gold. Like much of Patrick's writing, the song is equal parts humor and heart, balancing gritty honesty and warm nostalgia as it celebrates the simple joys of growing up in the kind of small town where getting dressed up on a Saturday night means putting a fresh set of mud tires on your pickup. “My first drink was a warm Busch Light / And my first scar is from an old dirt bike,” she sings in a larger-than-life voice matched only by the track's blockbuster production. “My first love grew up on a farm / My first buck is tattooed on my arm.” “Everything in that song comes straight out of my own experiences,” says Patrick. “I wanted it to be a way of telling my audience about who I really am, about how I was raised and the things that I carry in my heart.” A back-to-back CCMA Female Artist of the Year winner with several Top Ten singles to her name already, Patrick never imagined she'd grow up to be a country singer, Though she was raised on her parents' eclectic record collection, which contained everything from Neil Young and Hank Williams to Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin. As a solo artist, she began playing open mic nights, which quickly gave way to bar and club gigs, and within a year of signing to Warner, she was playing arenas on the road with Tom Cochrane and cutting her debut album, ‘Grace & Grit,' with Vince Gill and Justin Niebank in Nashville. The record garnered an avalanche of awards and acclaim for Patrick, who set a record by taking home both the Sirius/XM Rising Star and Female Artist of the Year honors at the CCMAs, and it significantly raised her profile ahead of her 2018 follow-up, ‘Country Music Made Me Do It,' which yielded her first #1 single, “Walls Come Down.” “‘Country Music Made Me Do It' was a big turning point in my life,” says Patrick. “It was the first record I made after moving to Nashville full-time, which was a really important step for me because I wanted to put myself in the mix with the best of the best. Living here still leaves me humbled and inspired and challenges me to grow as a writer every single day.” Patrick's most recent collection, the Juno Award-winning ‘Wild As Me' EP, showcases that continued growth, with the exhilarating title track quickly racking up over a million streams on Spotify alone and setting the stage for her eagerly awaited American introduction with “My First Car” and its similarly intoxicating follow-up single, “Goes Good With Beer.” “I'm hoping America will embrace me as something a little different,” Patrick reflects. “There's a real Southern rock edge to the music I'm making, and I think audiences are hungry for that right now, especially in a live setting, which is my happy place. As soon as it's safe to get back on the road, I'll be touring like crazy again because I was born to be a performer.” With ‘My First Car,' Meghan Patrick proves she was born to be a star, too.

Of the new single Meghan says, “It’s always been difficult for me to write love songs that felt authentic and real to me without being cliché. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about love in this past year, it’s that it’s not just about romance, sparks and the good times. It’s about continuing to choose that person over and over again, even when things are rough. When I love something, I go all in, but it doesn’t always stick. True love is knowing this about yourself, but realizing you’ve found the one thing (or person) you will never give up on, no matter how hard it gets.” Many more exciting announcements are set to come from Meghan in the coming weeks

From a young age she showed a great love and passion for music through her songwriting and acoustic guitar playing. “Both my parents are songwriters, and have always been very musical. Music is a part of me - it has always been in my blood.” After making her very first trip to Nashville, Tennessee, Alexis decided to make the move to Music City. Shortly after, Alexis saw the launch of her international career in Summer 2016 with a tour throughout Scandinavia, opening for renowned singer/songwriter Doug Seegers. “Being able to open for someone as talented and genuine as Doug Seegers along with his incredibly gifted band was an experience of a lifetime,” she says. “The opportunity truly allowed me to grow as a performer, and I am so grateful that Doug took me under his wing.” After releasing her first single in 2018, Alexis has had the opportunity to play at events such as Canadian Music Week in Toronto, CMA Fest in Nashville, and open for artists such as Marshall Tucker Band, Love and Theft, and Meghan Patrick. Alexis has also received numerous nominations and awards such as “Female Vocalist of The Year” at the 2018 Tennessee Music Awards and “Modern Country Vocalist of The Year” at the 2020 Josie Music Awards. I assumed that I would be talking with someone who grew up in Montreal. You see, his dad was the legendary sportscaster Randy Tieman from CFCF, but I didn't know that his late father commuted daily from Lancaster, Ontario. It was also exciting to discover we had a mutual admiration for the poutine in the area, and the joys of growing up at the local hockey rink.In this episode, you'll hear what it is like to grow up in a broadcast household, what he learned from his dad and his adventures moving from eastern Ontario, to Alberta; including his stint at the legendary Goat in Lloydminster. In a completely unrelated note - if you are alumni of that station, please contact Evan them about their 20th anniversary. edegenhardt@vistaradio.caAlso I made mention of the podcast episode featuring Meghan Patrick, you can connect to it here. Dani Strong visits the podcast to chat with me about her new album Undefined & to share some songs from it. She'll also chat with me about Tom Petty, Shane & Stacey Lee Guse, "task writing", music therapy & much more! DANI'S BIO Produced by JUNO Award winning and 2020 Grammy nominee, Dan Brodbeck (The Cranberries, Texas King), Undefined sees Dani unafraid to wander across genre lines, blending pop hooks with authentic lyrics while remaining firmly rooted in familiar country sounds. Dani thrives within the story-telling nature of country music and her latest release, "Mrs. Jones (Evelyn)," spins the classic tale of “filling holes with gold” and the futile effort of trying to heal through superficial means. The single won "Best Country Song" at the 2020 International Independent Music Awards in NYC. Her single "Not Right Now" was nominated for two awards at the International Independent Music Awards held in New York City in June of 2019. "Not Right Now" was also featured in the film Hometown Holiday on Amazon Prime TV. Dani has played the mainstage at Boots and Hearts (2017) and opened for Luke Bryan, Brett Eldredge, The Eli Young Band, The Road Hammers, Tom Cochrane, James Barker Band, Meghan Patrick, and Tebey.

Inside Today's Country

This week I chat with Rod Black.  A song for the times we are facing today. For 2020, Rod Black has teamed up with Producer/Writer Jeff Johnson who is a 2017 CCMA award winner (Producer of the year) and a 5-time BC Country Music Association award winning Producer. The first release for 2020 titled “Walk On” was co-written by Black and Johnson. The duo has seen major success previously as co-writers with US Billboard charting rock group Jet Black Stare which got signed by industry mogul L.A. Reid to a million-dollar contract with Island/Def Jam New York. The pair also wrote the top 20 Billboard Country song “Keeping On” in 2014 which Jeff Johnson also Produced. In 2019, Rod Black finish the year very strong with the single “Good Times” which was produced by Dan Swinimer and co-written by Rod Black, Chris Labelle (Rivertown Saints) and Dan Swinimer. The song was released in July and quickly hit #1 on SiriusXM Canada in less than 3 weeks following the release. Good Times stayed at #1 for an incredible 20+ weeks. Rod was also nominated for Male Artist of The Year at the BC Country Music Awards. In 2018, Bristol Records released Black’s top 20 Canadian Billboard single, “Keepin’ On”, to the US market. This proved to be successful as it reached top 80 on the US Country Music Row Charts. Black spent all of 2018 touring with his labelmates throughout the United States which included Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. They also performed in parts of Canada. Rod has shared the stage with country acts such as Dierks Bentley, Chris Young, Dallas Smith, Meghan Patrick, as well as national rock artists Three Doors Down, Stained & Shinedown. In 2017, Black got the attention of Bristol Records who receive worldwide distribution through SONY/The Orchard. Bristol Records quickly signed him to a multi-year contract. Black’s stage presence and his experience with touring is second to none, while his drive and passion for music is simply unstoppable. Prior to signing with Bristol Records, Rod Black spent a number of years living between Nashville and Texas following the success of “Keepin’ On”. Black spent his time there working with some of the most accredited producers and songwriters, while developing his songwriting skills.  www.rodblackcountry.rocks

Ontario's Meghan Patrick, who now lives in Nashville, co-wrote all but one of the 12 tracks on her new album Country Music Made Me Do It. Some of her other co-writers include Kelly Archer (Brett Young, Dustin Moore) and Justin Weaver (Kip Moore, Jason Aldean), who helped pen Walls Come Down, an ominous number about family strife. Case Of Beer And A Bed, written with Derick Ruttan and J.T. Harding (Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney), is a sentimental song about going back to the basics. Meghan co-wrote the title track with Stover and roots singer/songwriter Dan Isbell. The singer has recently experienced a lot of highs with the CCMA Awards and chart successes that she has earned, but there have also been a few lows such as the end of a long term relationship. Country Music Made Me Do It captures some of the peaks and valleys with heartfelt emotion in a traditional country setting. Meghan lives hard and loves hard, and her songs reflect this passion. She loves trucks, fishing and hunting, riding horses and a good stiff glass of whiskey, and all of these elements fuel her countrified lyrics. Think the free spirit of Emmylou Harris from those magical days when she performed with Gram Parsons, combined with the spark and sensuality of Tanya Tucker, the only female to crack the Outlaw genre, and you begin to have some idea of what Meghan Patrick is all about.

Born and raised in Bowmanville, Ontario, Meghan Patrick has dedicated her entire life to music, always wanting it to be more than just a passion. Prior to setting out as a solo artist, Meghan was the lead singer of the popular roots act The Stone Sparrows. A newgrass / bluegrass band, The Stone Sparrows released an EP and a full-length album before the members parted ways amicably in 2013 after playing their second Boots and Hearts Festival. Meghan has quickly made a name for herself since signing to Warner Music Canada. She has recently signed a  publishing deal with Ole Nashville. Her debut album Grace & Grit was released earlier this year. She worked with  producers Justin Niebank (Vince Gill, LeAnn Rimes), Vince Gill, Chris Baseford (Nickelback, Avril Lavigne), and  Carly McKillip. To add even more star power to her debut, Meghan brought in a few more big names, including  multiple Grammy nominee Joe Nichols who duets with her on “Still Loving You,” and fellow Canadian Chad Kroeger,  who co-wrote and produced the smash debut single “Bow Chicka Wow Wow” along with several other cuts on  the album.  “I have to feel connected to the music, especially when I am playing live," explains Meghan. "The emotions I write about are real and  audiences know when you are being true to yourself. Performing my own music and forming a bond with my  audience is what I do this for. And that’s the most enjoyable thing in the world."
