Y'all it's time for another round-up of all things romance in this month's RAAG on Romance. Bridget talks about the books that she's been reading (thank you to all publishers for the copies!), Shani and Bridget talk about what TV they have been binging, and generally laugh and play their way through the episode. Special Thank You to Anna Lowe for sponsoring today's episode. Anna Lowe is the author of Tempting the Sheriff, a steamy, suspenseful paranormal romance featuring a female, fox shifter as Robin Hood and a dragon/knight as the new sheriff of Nottingham. The Sherwood Forest Shifters series combines the action-packed romance of Outlander with the humor of The Princess Bride for a fresh new twist on a classic, with brave knights, cunning bandits, fire-breathing dragons, and forbidden lovers.Shows and Books we talk about in this month's RAAG on RomanceGen V on Amazon Prime - Highly recommend, but trigger warning - LOTS of violence, gratuitous and frankly weird sex, and trauma of ALL kinds throughout. Business Proposal - Korean Drama - The main character pretends to be someone else and ends up with a billionaire, who she works for! Shani rewatched it and still loves itMy Fault or Mia Culpa - Spanish romance movie, based on a Wattpad turned trilogy.  Bridget watched a liked it! Had a new step-siblings fall-in-love taboo element. Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros - The hype is worth it. This series is so good. Disclaimer - it is not finished. At least one more book coming next year. I burned right through books 1 and 2. If You'll Have Me by Eunnie -a sapphic graphic novel - legitimately cried a little at the end with how sweet and heartwarming it is. Fans of Heartstopper jump on this. The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain - author of Mr. Malcolm's List. - list of eligible rich women widows etc turn the tables and use it for their benefit.  Comes out January 9th, 2024Fire in the Flesh by Jennifer L Armentrout – if you missed our interview, make sure you check it out! Plus, we didn't even talk about her series Blood and Ash being optioned by Amazon Studios.  I burned right through it.******Join our book club on Patreon at patreon.com/romanceataglance  we meet 1x per month to chat books, finances, movies, and catch up!  Come hang out with us!******Affiliates! JOIN US ON PATREON: patreon.com/ivebeenmeaningtowatch In this episode of I've Been Meaning to Watch That, Jocelyn, AKA Joc's Watchlist, talks about Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. "Hi, everyone! I'm Jocelyn, also known as Joc's Watch List on TikTok and Instagram. I talk about TV shows and movies, review them, and give recommendations. I also share a daily TV show guide, so if you're ever running out of things to watch, come follow me!" First things first: in the Can't Wait to Watch segment, we talk about the upcoming DC movie, Blue Beetle, in the shadow of recent DC drama. We're hoping that Blue Beetle will break the trend of DC's underperforming releases when it comes out in August. We also get into Warner Brothers' new plan to license HBO original series to Netflix. Is this a bad idea? What does it mean for the HBO-exclusive series? Is Netflix's “One Home Per Account” plan worth it? Is it time to cancel our subscriptions? Which streaming platform should we pick? Does Peacock offer good value? Hear our thoughts on Atlanta Housewives, our predictions for the upcoming Challengers movie after watching the trailer, the next seasons of Euphoria, our beef with HBO's The Idol, and other shows that we enjoyed – including The Sex Lives of College Girls, Never Have I Ever, Mr. Malcolm's List, and we reminisce about old shows. Then, we get into the main topic of the show: Queen Charlotte. How many episodes should it have had? We're not too surprised at the show's success, because, let's be honest, it's Shonda Rhimes, and the actors were also incredible. We're glad that Bridgerton is introducing black characters into period dramas, but should Julia Quinn be making money from the diversity in the shows? We look at how Queen Charlotte's priorities have changed as she aged, we try to piece together what the other characters' lives would've looked like if the show had been longer, and we try to imagine Queen Charlotte's origin story. In the final segment, Watchlist, we go through the shows that we're excited about and our recommendations. Timestamps [00:28] A bit about Joc's Watchlist. [01:09] Can't wait to watch: Blue Beetle. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 22, 2023 is: beguile • bih-GHYLE • verb To beguile is to attract or interest someone, or to trick or deceive them. // He beguiled the audience with his smooth and seductive voice. // She was cunning enough to beguile her classmates into doing the work for her. See the entry > Examples: “Recycling themes from ‘Dangerous Liaisons' and ‘John Tucker Must Die,' the movie [Mr. Malcolm's List] follows two young women as they exact retribution on a snooty bachelor. The more Machiavellian of the pair is Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton), who early on endures a public snubbing by the coveted Mr. Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù). Vexed, Julia summons an old school chum, Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto), and enlists her in a vindictive plot to beguile Malcolm and then break his heart as payback.” — Natalia Winkelman, The Boston Globe, 29 June 2022 Did you know? A number of English words have traveled a rather curious path from meanings related to deception or trickery to something less unwelcome. A prime example is beguile, which first appeared in English around the 13th century with the meaning “to lead or draw by deception.” For the next several centuries, most of the senses of the verb had to do, in one manner or another, with deceiving. Around the time of Shakespeare, however, a more appealing sense charmed its way into the English language and hasn't left since: “to attract or interest someone,” or in other words, “to charm.” Nowadays, you're just as likely to hear beguile applied to someone who woos an audience with charisma, as to a wily trickster who hoodwinks others to get their way.

#ZaweAshton and #SopeDirisu star in this romantic comedy-drama set in 1800s #England, and it's such a feel-good movie where everybody wins. Things are set into motion when Julia (Zawe) fails to meet Mr. Malcolm's (Sope) list of requirements in a marriage partner. Furious, she enlists her childhood friend, Selina (Freida Pinto), in a plot to humiliate him with a false romance. But things backfire when the fake romance turns very real. From the start, it's difficult not to like most of these flawed characters who are at times silly but also endearing in one way or another. Despite her machinations, Julia is ultimately not a bad person and is deserving of love. The same can be said of Mr. Malcolm. I was ready to despise Julia and her childish plot, but Zawe brings such a girly warmth, strength and innocence to the character that it's difficult not to like her anyway and eventually root for her to find her own love amongst the convoluted courtship of the day. Sope and Selina are also excellent in the awkward and impassioned courtship. Selina's intelligence and honesty (as far as her views are concerned) lead Jeremy to question himself and his rigid nature. They balance each other in a way, and the journey is interesting to see. One of the best things about the movie, I must add, is the great diversity and having Black and POC characters as leads in a story that is both a period piece and a universal story that anyone can relate to. #mrmalcolmslist is available on streaming at #amazonstudios and #appletvplus among others. MR. MALCOLM'S LIST is a period piece set in Victorian England that conflates the plots of several Jane Austen novels. Mr. Jeremy Malcolm, a charming, rich bachelor in London, creates a list of qualities that any prospective woman he may wed must possess. Julia, one of his rejected prospects, finds out about his list. She persuades her cousin, Selina, to aid her in a revenge plot to treat Malcolm as badly as he has seemed to mistreat so many. However, Selina begins to disagree with Julia about Mr. Malcolm's character. She develops serious feelings for him.

Suzanne has written the screenplay for Mr. Malcolm's List, which was released in cinemas this month. Shot in Dublin/Wicklow last Spring, this film stars Freida Pinto and Zawe Ashton and is based on Suzanne's original novel. WFT spoke with her about the writing process and what it was like adapting work – even if it's your own. About Suzanne Allain Suzanne Allain is a novelist and screenwriter whose first novel, Incognito, was published in 2001. She later adapted her second novel, Mr. Malcolm's List, into a feature script. It was one of the highest-rated romance screenplays on the Black List, was produced as part of their Black List Table Reads Podcast in 2015, and released as a feature film in 2022. He tells Chris Hewitt all about this gear shift, his extensive research for a period role, and his days as a Harry Potter fan. That can be found between 00:32:45.00 and 00:55:19.00, timestamp fans. Then, in the virtual podbooth this week, Helen O'Hara hosts and brings Amon Warmann and John Nugent along for the ride, discussing average films with great scores, the week's movie news (including the trailer for Empire Of Light, the new Sam Mendes film), and reviewing Mr. Malcolm's List, Beast, Samaritan, and Official Competition. MALCOLM'S LIST, a new release starring Zawe Ashton, Freida Pinto and Sope Dirisu, directed by Emma Holly Jones in her feature debut. Anna talks to Emma Holly Jones about this Regency RomCom with a difference: about what it takes to get a first feature made, about historical accuracy versus depicting diverse female agency on screen and about casting and working with Freida Pinto and Zawe Ashton during lockdown. Zawe Ashton joins Anna to talk about playing Julia Thistlewaite in MR. MALCOLM'S LIST opposite Freida Pinto as Selina Dalton. Zawe talks about her view of the film's narrative, the pleasure of working with Freida Pinto and the other women in the film, and on making a movie in which female friendship is as important as the love interest. This week's very special episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show focuses on Baz Luhrmann's new movie Elvis and the life, music, legend, meaning, and enduring importance of “The King” Elvis Presley. “Champion” Joe Lansdale is the award-winning author of more than 50 novels including the amazing Hap and Leonard series. His Bram Stoker Award-nominated novella, Bubba Ho-Tep, was made into a movie of the same name by Don Coscarelli and featured Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis. Joe Lansdale shares what it was like experiencing the Elvis cultural phenomenon as a young man; the power of black music and Presley's relationship to it; youth culture and sex; and Luhrmann's new movie as a work of art and a type of true lie. Joe Lansdale also shares a powerful memory about exactly where he was and what he was doing the moment he found out that Elvis Presley had died. And Joe Lansdale reflects on getting to know Michael Kenneth Williams, shares some thoughts about his beloved cult classic film Bubba Ho-Tep, and of course updates folks on the future of Hap and Leonard. Michael Bertrand is the second guest on this week's installment of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is a professor of history at Tennessee State University and the author of the book Race, Rock, and Elvis. Bertrand separates fact from fiction about Elvis Presley's relationship to black music and the color line; the complex dynamics of race and class in Presley's life, career, and cultural meaning; and why we are still talking about The King almost five decades after his death. Chauncey DeVega goes to the movies and reviews The Black Phone, Mr. Malcolm's List, Crimes of the Future, Brian and Charles, The Phantom of the Open, and Top Gun: Maverick. Eight new movie reviews this episode, at least from Steve Prokopy who saw all of them. Erik Childress saw half of them. Half of those even great. But which ones? There are two Antonio Banderas films this week with him in action mode (Code Name Banshee) and another as an egotistical actor being directed by Penelope Cruz (Official Competition). Scout Taylor-Compton tries to survive an evening in a house again (The Long Night) and Ralph Fiennes tries to survive in the Moroccan desert away from Jessica Chastain after they accidentally kill a local boy in the latest from John Michael McDonaugh (The Forgiven). Love is afoot in 19th century England (Mr. Malcolm's List) and Joey King literally fights back against marriage in some time period (The Princess). Finally two films vie for family attention (Minions: The Rise of Gru, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On). Which one are you a bad parent for not taking your kids to? Also for an added bonus, Erik & Steve make their choices for the Best of the First Half of 2022, films and performances. 0:00 - Intro 1:18 - Code Name Banshee 8:40 - Official Competition 21:22 - The Long Night 27:14 - The Forgiven 41:17 - Mr. Malcolm's List 47:40 - The Princess 55:35 - Minions: The Rise of Gru 1:04:29 - Marcel the Shell With Shoes On  1:17:15 – Erik & Steve's First Half of 2022 Ballots 1:23:36 - Outro

Alonso and Christy also review the Regency-era rom-com “Mr. Malcolm's List,” which is entertaining but feels familiar and inferior compared to “Bridgerton.” In news, we discuss the Cinerama Dome, R. It's a special thing when you manage to get genuinely surprised....On this episode we dive into a truly joyful piece of cinema that is in theatres this coming Friday July 1st.  It's time to scroll through 'Mr. Malcolm's List'.When Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) is jilted by London's most eligible bachelor, Mr. Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) because she fails to meet an item on his list of requirements for a bride, she's humiliated and determined to exact revenge.  She convinces her friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to play the role of his ideal match. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders whether he's found the perfect woman...or the perfect hoax. While you could call this 'Jane Austen Fan Fiction' (or guest today does) this is so more as it has a genuinely sharp sense of humor to it while still respect the romance angle of it all.  It's exceptionally smart and is a love story that won't bore the guys who get dragged to the theatre by the girlfriend to see it.We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with director Emma Holly Jones to talk about the origins of the story, making something that is true to the genre but still very self aware at the same time and so very much more...

Actor, activist, and Story + Rain cover star Freida Pinto, known for acclaimed films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Trishna, returns to the screen this summer in the delightful Mr. Malcolm's List, a movie that shakes up what we've come to know as the period genre in film. The new mother is fiercely focused when it comes to her work, and in episode 106, Freida explains how and why her production company, Freebird Films, seeks out projects that allow her to tell stories that “angle towards hope”---they're about to make some big moves. Listen in as Freida discusses the stories she believes are lacking on the screen, how she prepares for a role, her desire to step far out of herself for them, and her preference to remain on the go, on any given project. You'll hear intimate stories about the many prolific directors she's worked with like Ron Howard, Danny Boyle, Terrence Malick, and Woody Allen---as well as what it's like working with first-time director, actor Kristen Scott Thomas, on My Mother's Wedding, which she is currently shooting, co-starring Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller---one of the most fun casts she's ever been a part of. Freida talks about her most taxing roles, shares stories from set and the valued relationships she's created there, including a surprisingly sweet story about Sir Anthony Hopkins. We talk motherhood, her work with postpartum plan and brand, Anya, and what it's like to be part of a creative couple. We get into details about Mr. Malcolm's List, her latest film, out on July 1st. We cover everything from its modern and inclusive international vibe, to the notion of having a checklist when looking for a partner, and how and when she's created one for herself. We go back to the beginning: her school days, her modeling days (and why she disliked it), and all things her very first film and smash hit, 2008's Slumdog Millionaire.
