Mark Pougatch talks to former sub-postmistress, Jo Hamilton, a victim of the biggest miscarriage of justice in British judicial history. Played by Monica Dolan in the ITV hit drama series, MR BATES vs THE POST OFFICE, Jo is one of over 700 sub-postmasters and mistresses prosecuted between 2000 and 2014 for shortfalls in their accounts. Jo was persuaded to plead guilty to false accounting but her case should never have come to court. Here in part 1, Jo talks about how her nightmare unfolded. Noticing a shortfall in her accounts one night, she rang the Horizon helpdesk only for her deficit to double before her eyes. Soon she was in debt, facing prosecution from the Post Office and a possible jail sentence. Her village might have rallied round but her ordeal was only just beginning. Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Girls On Film we give you a flavour of the third Girls On Film Awards, our annual celebration of women in film which this year took place at our new home, Regent Street Cinema in London. We launched the awards to celebrate excellence in women-focused films, and to honour women and non-binary filmmakers. Girls On Film provides an inclusive platform for the voices of diverse women and people of marginalised genders, and we have a mission: to bring about industry-wide change, and to work toward equal representation of women in the film industry: on screen, and behind the camera. As the saying goes: “if she can see it, she can be it”, and that's why shining a light on the great work women are making can make a real difference. Girls On Film host Anna Smith and co-founder Hedda Lornie Archbold hosted the awards together, and were joined by a stellar group of presenters to give out the awards, including Monica Dolan, Ronni Ancona, Sarah Gavron, Mia Bays, Col Needham, Mark Kermode, Nitin Sawhney and more. SANDY McGREGOR on MR BATES VS THE POST OFFICE First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 28th 2024 We don't often deal with all that much outrage in the generally cosy world of VISION ON SOUND, where often the most controversial opinion I make is about whether a fifty year old television series is still acceptable for modern viewing, how certain shows came to be wiped, or disagreeing with my guests as to whether certain TV shows can be considered to be absolute rubbish or not, or whether we should, perhaps, only award that dubious accolade to anything produced in the last ten years or so. Equally, we don't often consider much in the way of modern or recent television to come under what we loosely call our watching brief. And yet, because a certain recent ITV television drama has been causing a lot of discussion, and indeed outrage, I felt that we couldn't really ignore it for twenty years in the hope that it might become worthy of our attention. So, having already borrowed - and devoured - his copy of the book THE GREAT POST OFFICE SCANDAL by NICK WALLIS, I invited SANDY McGREGOR back onto the show to have a chat about the implications of the recently broadcast powerful four-part drama series MR BATES VERSUS THE POST OFFICE, the story of what has been called one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British History, written by GWYNETH HUGHES and directed by JAMES STRONG, which starred TOBY JONES alongside MONICA DOLAN and JULIE HESMONDHALGH as some of the “little people” doggedly and determinedly pursuing justice by taking on the POST OFFICE in a two decade battle to clear the names of over five hundred of his fellow sub-postmasters in a story which, finally, largely because of the broadcast of this production, has rightly been front and centre in the news agenda. And whilst neither of us can claim any insights or personal involvement with the story, other than having taken a keen interest in it, and reading rather a lot about it, as well as discussing the series itself, our discussion does try to consider the power of television to occasionally make great positive changes happen, so we do briefly consider some of the – surprisingly few - other TV shows that can claim to have actually changed lives, and wonder just why it is that an important news story such as this somehow failed to make the same kind of impact in documentary form as it managed to as a drama series, and whether in future, that might be the only way any of us are likely to get the rest of the population to take much interest in some of the important things that are happening but which remain largely ignored. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a subject that has gripped the nation as a result of a truly extraordinary drama series which aired on ITV earlier this month - Mr Bates vs The Post Office. Starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among other, this exceptional dramatisation of the Horizon IT scandal, otherwise known as the British Post Office scandal, depicts one of the biggest miscarriages of justice ever witness in the United Kingdom. Hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted for theft, false accounting or fraud as a result of the flawed Horizon accounting system, created by IT juggernaut Fujitsu. Incidentally, as is discussed in this episode of the podcast, this system is still in use today. Jacki and Lyle analyse the impact the ITV drama has had on the ongoing campaign for justice for the victims of this scandal, led by the inspirational Alan Bates. Jacki asks how it was only when this drama was broadcast that the government started to take notice, and why the Post Office didn't act when the crisis was first discovered. Lyle then discusses the involvement of Paula Vennells, former Post Office CEO who has recently handed back her CBE after a petition for her to do so garnered over a million signatures, and current Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, who was Minister for Postal Affairs in the coalition government and refused to meet with Alan Bates in 2010. Jacki and Lyle finish by discussing the lack of leadership within the Post Office and the effectiveness of the response to the outpouring of support from the British public in light of the excellent ITV drama.Head over to ITVx to watch the brilliant Mr Bates vs The Post Office: https://www.itv.com/watch/mr-bates-vs-the-post-office/10a0469/10a0469a0001Artwork by DimosoMusic by Lyle FultonGet in touch via lyle@dimoso.com or info@dimoso.comMore information at www.dimoso.com and www.therestispr.comFollow us on Twitter - @TheRestIsPR Hosted on Acast. TB Joshua, who founded the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Nigeria, built an evangelical empire that drew presidents, Premier League footballers and millions of followers from across the globe - including from towns and cities across the UK. Multiple victims claim they repeatedly tried to raise the alarm with British authorities, including the Foreign Office, but an adequate investigation “never took place”. Two UK survivors of his abuse - Rae and Anneka - join Clare to discuss their experiences as ‘disciples', why they left and the law changes they hope will result from this exposure. The Post Office Horizon scandal is once more dominating the headlines. Today, a petition calling for the former Post Office chief executive Paula Vennells to lose her CBE has received more than one million signatures, and yesterday the Prime Minister told the BBC the Government was reviewing options to help victims of the scandal. More than 700 branch managers were convicted of false accounting, theft and fraud based on faulty software. Currently, a public inquiry into the scandal is ongoing and the Metropolitan Police is investigating the Post Office over potential fraud offences arising from the prosecutions. One of the women who was falsely accused was Jo Hamilton. Her story has been told in the ITV drama Mr Bates vs. The Post Office, where she was played by the actor Monica Dolan. Jo joins Clare. What do you do if your child refuses to go to school? Today, the Government is expected to announce funding for a new initiative aimed at tackling school absences in England. More than a fifth of secondary school pupils in England are persistently absent. The new scheme will see funding for school attendance mentors, an initiative which has been trialled in a pilot by the charity Barnardos. As the Israel-Gaza war continues, aid groups are calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as power shortages threaten the lives of vulnerable patients, including women and children. UN agencies have estimated that one-third of hospitals in Gaza and nearly two-thirds of primary health care clinics have had to shut due to damage or a lack of fuel. The Israeli government says Hamas is stock-piling thousands of litres of fuel. The biggest aid provider in Gaza, the UN, says its fuel will run out tonight, unless it gets fresh supplies - hospitals in Gaza are already limiting services to critical cases only. Emma Barnett hears from Save the Children's Soraya Ali, as well as women's voices from Gaza and Israel. Lizzi Larbalestier has cared for 139 seals in her home in Cornwall. She also helped set up a new seal hospital with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, and has just won an animal action award from the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Actor Monica Dolan joins Emma to talk about starring in a new film about the undiscovered artist Audrey Amiss. Amiss was tipped for artistic greatness, but ended up cycling between mental hospitals and menial jobs for decades, and was sadly never exhibited, or recognised in her lifetime. Typist Artist Pirate King comes out this Friday. What normally happens as someone dies? These questions and others are answered in a new short animation ‘Dying for Beginners'. Kathryn Mannix is a retired palliative care doctor, who's made it her mission to demystify what happens as we die. Carol Morley follows the trail of Britain's most prolific female director, Muriel Box. She directed 13 films in 14 years and was the first woman ever to receive the Oscar for best original screenplay, for The Seventh Veil. Yet, she is barely known in her own country. She has never had a retrospective of her work here and her films are hard to get hold of, even box office hits like The Truth About Women, Simon And Laura and The Passionate Stranger. Carol made an appeal on Radio 4 for anyone who knew Muriel to get in touch. And she was overhwelmed by the response. On this cinematic journey of discovery, Carol talks to her daughter, Leonora, and her grandsons Ben and Charlie, as well as distant relatives Sean Barton and Olivia Howells. She also hears from Karen Peploe, who met the director when she wrote a thesis on her in the 1980s, and British Film Institute curator Jo Botting. Along the way, Carol digs through crates of diaries and letters and finally gets to hold an Academy Award, albeit one that's been loved to death by two small children. Carol also mounts a campaign to have Muriel's achievements recognised in this country, and discovers that her efforts have not been in vain. Presented by Carol Morley. Readings by Monica Dolan and Joanna Munro.

"[Set in England in 1980] EMPIRE OF LIGHT is a 2022 British romantic drama film written and directed by Sam Mendes. The film stars Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Monica Dolan, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth." - Wikipedia I would say that EMPIRE OF LIGHT is not what you would expect. It starts off seemingly only focused on one subject, but blossoms into a story about two people who manage to grow through different but nevertheless similar experiences. Hilary (Olivia Colman) and Stephen (Micheal Ward) almost couldn't be any different. She's a middle-aged White woman dealing with sexual harassment on the job. Stephen is a bright, young Black man with his whole future ahead of him. Yet through a shared feeling of being abused and outcast, they build something of a relationship, albeit temporary, that changes them. It's a lovely story--with some hints of HAROLD AND MAUDE--a carefully crafted visual love letter to film, and a sympathetic portrayal of the struggles of living in a world that often refuses to acknowledge the pain, both physical and mental, of "outsiders". I was glad to see that it went more in depth about the experience of racism and understanding it from multiple points of view, rather than simply having Stephen be a one-dimensional symbol for Hilary's growth. While there is growth from her experiences with Stephen, it's mutual and is more about the ways in which shared emotions can impact each person in unexpected ways. I also enjoyed the cinematic composition of the film as much as the symbolic changes in Hilary's style of dress as she continued to inwardly transform, particularly near and at the end of the story. In this interview, Sam Mendes talks about the intricate nature of the story and the deeply personal experiences that influenced him during the writing and directing of the movie. #SamMendes #EmpireofLight #OliviaColman #MichealWard --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support

For @EchoChamberFP https://www.instagram.com/echochamberfp/ this week, we went and gave you another 'TWO Parter'!!! In 'Part One' we take a look at the film sequel to 2019's 'Wu Assassins', and then a musical adaptation! 'Wu Assassins: Fistful Of Vengeance' is directed by Roel Reiné and written by Cameron Litvack, Jessica Chou & Yalun Tu. Kai Jin (Iko Uwais), a young Chinatown chef in present day San Francisco, becomes entangled with the Chinese Triad's pursuit of deadly ancient powers known as the "Wu Xing. 'Cyrano' is directed by Joe Wright and Erica Schmidt adapts her 2018 musical of the same name. It's a re-imagining the timeless tale of a heartbreaking love triangle. A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne (Haley Bennett), Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her — and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian (Kelvin Harrison, Jr). In each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Sister Aloysius Beauvier, principal of St Nicholas Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964, has her doubts about the school pastor, Father Flynn, and his relationship with 12-year-old Donald Muller. Her crusade to confirm her suspicions rocks the church community and her own certainties in John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize winning play Doubt – A Parable. Award-winning actress Monica Dolan shares her insights from playing Sister Aloysius in a new production at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Anna goes searching for buried treasure with two fascinating creators of The Dig (Moira Buffini and Gabrielle Tana) and brilliant actress Monica Dolan. They unearth the true lives of the film’s female characters, behind-the-scenes stories, and more. First up, Anna and screenwriter Moira discuss why The Dig has been such a popular lockdown watch. Moira delves into the process of adapting the book and how she brought to life the characters of Edith (Carey Mulligan) and Peggy (Lily James). On the subject of picking projects with interesting women, Moira also reflects on creating the popular TV series Harlots and her adaptation of Jane Eyre. Next, Anna catches up with Monica on her performance as May Brown, the wife of archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes). Monica describes working opposite Ralph and explores the pivotal role her character has. From the struggle to shake a Suffolk accent, to the training it takes to suppress a shiver, Monica gives us a picture of life on set. Finally, producer Gabrielle talks to Anna about putting together a “creative family” for the making of The Dig. She speaks fondly of casting director Lucy Bevan, production designer Maria Djurkovic, and costume designer Alice Babidge, among others. She also explains why she thinks women make good producers. Other TV and Movie Mentions: Call My Agent!, Honeyland, Philomena, Harlots, Jane Eyre (2011). This episode is in partnership with Netflix. Harriet Harman MP, raises concerns about the current treatment of mothers in prison during Covid-19 and the impact on their children and family life.. Fertility clinics were told last month that they could reopen as long as social distancing measures were in place. Being without access to fertility treatment has left thousands of couples – as well as single women – worried that they might run out of chances to conceive, and run out of time. Research has begun into the impact of clinic coronavirus delays on people’s lives, relationships and feelings. Public toilets have been a well-known victim of council cuts, leaving the UK with 50% fewer toilets than a decade ago. Coronavirus has caused even more closures – albeit temporarily. But where does that leave people who need urgent access to the loo? Monica Dolan is best known for her role as senior communications officer Tracey Pritchard in the BBC’s comedy W1A. Here's more from amazon about Don't You Forget About Me:After earning rave reviews with her rock-and-roll memoir But Enough About Me, Jancee Dunn takes on fiction in this comically poignant debut, a perfect read for anyone who has ever looked back nostalgically and wondered what might have been. At thirty-eight, Lillian Curtis is content with her life. She enjoys her routine as a producer for a talk show in New York City starring showbiz veteran Vi (“short for vibrant”) Barbour, a spirited senior. Lillian’s relationship with her husband is pleasant if no longer exciting. Most nights she is more than happy to come home to her apartment and crawl into her pajamas. Then she’s hit with a piece of shocking news: Her husband wants a divorce. Blindsided, Lillian takes a leave of absence and moves back to her parents’ home in suburban New Jersey. Nestled in her childhood bedroom, where Duran Duran and Squeeze posters still cover the walls, she finds high school memories a healing salve to her troubles. She hurtles backward into her teen years, driving too fast, digging up mix tapes, and tentatively reconciling with Dawn, a childhood friend she once betrayed. Punctuating her stroll down memory lane is an invitation to the Bethel Memorial High School class of 1988 twenty-year reunion. It just might be Lillian’s chance to reconnect with her long-lost boyfriend, Christian Somers, who is expected to attend. Will it be just like heaven? Lillian discovers, as we all must, the pitfalls of glorifying the glory days, the mortification of failing as a thirtysomething adult, and the impossibility of fully recapturing the past. Don’t You Forget About Me is for anyone who looks back and wonders: What if?
