In 2018, while sailing in The Bahamas, I had a terrifying encounter with an oceanic whitetip shark, a known maneater, and one of the most feared sharks in the ocean. I described the encounter in my book Journey to the Ragged Islands. In this episode is a chapter in the audiobook, where I read from the book about my time at Cat Island. I encountered the shark while on a paddleboard at the north end of the island. In the following days, I sailed south to New Bight and hiked up Mt. Alvernia to the Hermitage of Father Jerome.  Shownotes are here https://www.paultrammell.com/dream-chasers-and-eccentrics Support through Patreon here https://www.patreon.com/DreamChasersandEccentrics

Come along for some tales from an Island off the coast of Southern California! You can find all of our wonderful links on the linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts   Santa Catalina Island, nicknamed "Catalina" or "Cat Island", is a charming island getaway located 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. History The island has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The first inhabitants were the Tongva people who lived on the island for over 8,000 years. In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain, became the first European to set foot on the island. He named it Santa Catalina after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of sailors. The island remained sparsely populated until the 19th century when it was used as a hunting ground by wealthy mainlanders. In the 1860s, William Wrigley Jr., the chewing gum magnate, purchased a controlling interest in the island and began its development as a resort destination. He is credited with the island's iconic Catalina Casino, which was originally a ballroom dance hall, and the town of Avalon. Locations The island is 21 miles long and 4.2 miles wide, with an area of 76 square miles. Avalon, the main town and port, is located on the eastern end of the island. It's a pedestrian-friendly town with colorful buildings, shops, restaurants, and casinos. Two other settlements are Two Harbors, a smaller village on the island's west side, and the Isthmus, a seasonal community located on the narrow strip of land connecting the island's two halves. Tourist Attractions Catalina is a popular tourist destination known for its Mediterranean climate, stunning scenery, and outdoor activities. Here are some of the top things to do: Explore Avalon: Walk along the Avalon Harbor, browse the shops on Catalina Avenue, or take a glass-bottom boat tour to see the underwater world. Visit the Catalina Casino: This iconic landmark is now a centerpiece for entertainment, dining, and shopping. Hike in the Interior: The island has miles of hiking trails that offer stunning views of the ocean, mountains, and valleys. One popular hike is the Trans-Catalina Trail, a 38.5-mile route that traverses the entire island. Go Ziplining: Experience the thrill of ziplining through the island's canyons and forests. Relax on the Beach: Catalina has many beautiful beaches, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Go Kayaking: Explore the island's coastline by kayak and discover hidden coves and sea caves. Take a Golf Cart Tour: Rent a golf cart and explore the island at your own pace. This is a great way to see the sights and get off the beaten path. Go Scuba Diving or Snorkeling: The waters around Catalina Island are home to a variety of marine life, making it a great place for scuba diving and snorkeling. UFO Sightings Catalina Island is known as a UFO hotspot. There have been many reported sightings of unidentified flying objects over the island for many years. Some people believe that the island's location and magnetic field make it a prime spot for UFO activity. Whether you believe in UFOs or not, the sightings add to the island's mystique and allure.

This documentary was so thought-provoking for me, about how mentally healthy perspectives at a young age can contribute to shaping a person's life. That might be an odd (partial) takeaway, given the richness of Sidney Poitier's life. But while watching the film, that is one of the aspects I heavily keyed into. While, clearly, not the only factor, I ruminated about how much of who he was stemmed from that one fact. Naturally, there's a lot that went into his life and the project, as he had an extensive career and life that touched many people. But there are a few moments that stood out to me the most. When he talked about how he was raised and the fact that being considered “less than” was not a factor for him growing up because there were only two White people living on Cat Island, Bahamas, where he was raised before moving back to Florida at 15. People were just people. There were no Jim Crow laws, covert or overt racism influencing how he saw himself or how others saw him. Though as a teen he was developing a habit if getting into trouble before moving to the US, it was interesting to see how the seeds of his later character were potentially already there. Of course, we know that both nature and nurture are factors in development, and that is also as clear in his case as in any other with different upbringings from his. But it was interesting to see how things developed for him without being born into and potentially heavily influenced by all the minutiae of systemic oppression of that time, even with being born into financial poverty. So in coming to the United States, he didn't understand the rules and conducted himself as such. I've often wondered about and talked about the ways in which some of the best parts of people's core personalities develop without the influence of others and without oppression. While it is unquestionably possible to overcome damage done by oppression, as I watched the documentary I thought about how his persistence and good nature was a throughline, and how those natural inclinations were nurtured in his youth before arriving in the United States. (It was good to see how the joyful prediction given when he was a baby came to pass.) And as an actor, he broke down barriers and contributed to showing the world it was possible for Black people to not only be considered equal, but also extraordinary. He was a man of respect and integrity, not out of a want for approval, but because that is how he saw himself and that is how those natural core aspects of himself were allowed to develop before he ever crossed paths with Jim Crow and other designs of racial oppression. Not only did he have a natural talent, but he worked hard to cultivate his skills as an entertainer. One of the joys of the documentary is seeing the history of his friendships with other entertainers and actors like Harry Belafonte, and how they all persisted despite the racism thrown at them. Overall, it's a grand historical piece of work and more than worth the watch.

In this episode, Michelle Rickman shares her admiration for Sidney Poitier who played the role of Walter Lee, a character inspired by the life of her grandfather Perry Hansberry IN RAISIN IN THE SUN written by her great auntie Lorraine Hansberry. : Hollywood icon Sidney Poitier was the first African American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, receiving the honor in 1964 for his performance in 'Lilies of the Field.' Who Was Sidney Poitier? After a delinquency-filled youth and a short stint in the U.S. Army, Sidney Poitier moved to New York to pursue an acting career. He joined the American Negro Theater and later began finding roles in Hollywood. Following his performance in the 1963 film Lilies of the Field, he became the first African American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also directed several films, including Buck and the Preacher and Stir Crazy. The acclaimed actor was knighted in 1974 and honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. Early Years in Miami and the Bahamas Sidney Poitier was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida. He arrived two and a half months prematurely while his Bahamian parents were on vacation in Miami. As soon as he was strong enough, Poitier left the United States with his parents for the Bahamas. There, Poitier spent his early years on his father's tomato farm on Cat Island. After the farm failed, the family moved to Nassau, when Poitier was around the age of 10. In Nassau, Poitier seemed to have a knack for getting himself into trouble. As a result, his father decided to send the teenager to the United States for his own good and Poitier went to live with one of his brothers in Miami. At age 16, Poitier left the South for New York City, where he worked menial jobs to support himself, until he found his life's passion. Stage Beginnings Poitier made a deal with the American Negro Theater in New York City to receive acting lessons in exchange for working as a janitor for the theater. He eventually made his way to the ANT stage, filling in for Harry Belafonte in their production of Days of Our Youth. In 1946, Poitier appeared in a Broadway production of Lysistrata to great acclaim. His success in that role landed him another in the play Anna Lucasta, and for the next few years Poitier toured the country with the all-Black production. Sidney Poitier's Films Early Career: 'No Way Out' to 'Blackboard Jungle' Poitier made his Hollywood debut in the 1950 feature film No Way Out, and he followed in 1951 with Cry, the Beloved Country, a drama set in South Africa during the time of apartheid. He enjoyed a career breakthrough in 1955 with the popular Blackboard Jungle, portraying a troubled but gifted student at an inner-city school. Oscar Nom for 'The Defiant Ones' and Win for 'Lillies of the Field' Poitier's success as an actor reached new heights when he scored an Academy Award nomination for the 1958 crime drama The Defiant Ones, with Tony Curtis. The following year, he lit up the screen as a leading man in the musical Porgy and Bess, co-starring with Dorothy Dandridge. Both this film and his impressive turn in the 1961 film adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun helped make the actor a top star. In 1964, Poitier claimed the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in Lilies of the Field (1963) — the first win by an African American actor in this category. The accolade helped make Poitier cinema's first Caribbean American superstar, one who consciously defied racial stereotyping. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thesuccesspodcastnow/support

Hurricane Frances  was the sixth named storm, the fourth hurricane, and the third major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. The system crossed the open Atlantic during mid-to-late August, moving to the north of the Lesser Antilles while strengthening. Its outer bands affected Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands while passing north of the Caribbean sea. The storm's maximum sustained wind speeds peaked at 145 miles per hour, achieving Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. As the system slowed down its forward motion, the eye passed over San Salvador Island and very close to Cat Island in the Bahamas. Frances was the first hurricane to impact the entire Bahamian archipelago since 1866, and led to the nearly complete destruction of their agricultural economy.   Frances then passed over the central sections of the state of Florida in the U.S. only three weeks after Hurricane Charley, causing significant damage to the state's citrus crop, closing major airports, schools and canceling a collegiate football game. The storm then moved briefly offshore Florida into the northeast Gulf of Mexico and made a second U.S. landfall at the Florida Panhandle before accelerating northeast through the eastern United States near the Appalachians into Atlantic Canada while weakening. A significant tornado outbreak accompanied the storm across the eastern United States, nearly equaling the outbreak from Hurricane Beulah. Very heavy rains fell in association with this slow moving and relatively large hurricane, which led to floods in Florida and North Carolina. A total of 49 lives were lost from the cyclone. Damages totaled US$12 billion.   Hurricane Ivan  was a large, long-lived, Cape Verde-type hurricane that caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and United States. The cyclone was the ninth named storm, the sixth hurricane and the fourth major hurricane of the active 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. Ivan formed in early September, had reached Category 5 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, and became the 10th most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. At its peak in the Gulf of Mexico, Ivan was the size of the state of Texas. It also spawned 120 tornadoes across the eastern United States.   Ivan caused catastrophic damage to Grenada as a strong Category 3 storm, heavy damage to Jamaica as a strong Category 4 storm and then Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands and the western tip of Cuba as a Category 5 storm. After peaking in strength, the hurricane moved north-northwest across the Gulf of Mexico to strike Florida as a strong Category 3 storm, causing significant damage. Ivan dropped heavy rains on the Southeastern United States as it progressed northeast and east through the eastern United States, becoming an extratropical cyclone. The remnant low from the storm moved into the western subtropical Atlantic and regenerated into a tropical cyclone, which then moved across Florida and the Gulf of Mexico into Louisiana and Texas, causing minimal damage.   Ivan caused an estimated US$18 billion in damages to the United States, making it the fifth costliest hurricane ever to strike the country.  We didn't get hit too badly by this storm, but it has my nerves on edge that it is just one storm after another this year.   Hurricane Jeanne  was the deadliest hurricane in the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the tenth named storm, the seventh hurricane, and the fifth major hurricane of the season, as well as the third hurricane and fourth named storm of the season to make landfall in Florida. After wreaking havoc on Hispaniola, Jeanne struggled to reorganize, eventually strengthening and performing a complete loop over the open Atlantic. It headed westwards, strengthening into a Category 2 hurricane and passing over the islands of Great Abaco and Grand Bahama in the Bahamas on September 25.   Jeanne made landfall later in the day in Florida just 2 miles from where Frances had struck 3 weeks earlier. Building on the rainfall of Frances and Ivan, Jeanne brought near-record flood levels as far north as West Virginia and New Jersey before its remnants turned east into the open Atlantic. Jeanne is blamed for at least 3,006 deaths in Haiti with about 2,800 in Gonaïves alone, which was nearly washed away by floods and mudslides. The storm also caused 7 deaths in Puerto Rico, 18 in the Dominican Republic and at least 4 in Florida, bringing the total number of deaths to at least 3,025;   Jeanne is the 12th deadliest storm in the Atlantic hurricane history ever. Final property damage in the United States was $6.8 billion, making this the 13th costliest hurricane in U.S. history.  Jeanne took out several trees at the sanctuary and smashed some cages, but none of the cats escaped.  I had to use my body as a patch in the roof of a cougar cage until a patch of wire arrived, but that was the scariest part of the damage done.   I'm exhausted from being on high alert for weeks now due to hurricanes hitting Florida.  I watch them for days, not knowing where they will land, and fearful for the lives of my cats and family.  People are saying that it is global warming and life in Florida will always be this way from now on.  I don't know how long I can deal with the stress.   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! In today’s podcast, I interview a friend of mine since high school (shout-out to Westfield High School!).  Lexi Tourtellotte DiYeso is an incredibly driven woman, not only physically (she was a collegiate soccer player, and continues her physical prowess being a personal trainer and keeping fitness as one of her top priorities), but also mentally and spiritually.  Lexi is the founder and owner of her brick and mortar clothing boutique “Hazel Twenty”, as well as Hazel’s offspring “Maisie Twenty Kids Boutique”, both located in Asheville, North Carolina.  Lexi also runs a wellness retreat on Cat Island in the Bahamas called “Complete Retreat”.  In this episode, we talk about Lexi’s soccer history and how it’s helped shape her in navigating many decisions in life, particularly in being a female entrepreneur.  We talk about how persistence pays off when going after your dreams, as well as vision boarding and pivoting in life when the unexpected happens.  I have a feeling that you are going to find yourself doing some on-line shopping at Lexi’s boutiques after hearing this episode (and if you’re lucky enough to be near the Asheville, NC area, I bet you’ll be making a trip over to her stores to check all of the goodness that is Hazel Twenty and the Maisie Twenty Kids Boutique).  When she isn’t busy running her stores and thinking of her next project, you can find Lexi doing something in nature with her 3 sons and her 2 dogs!Sit back, enjoy and start thinking of your fall wardrobe!!

I am doing my best to learn how Marine Conservation can become more diverse and equal and provide that information to you. Over the past week, two pieces of content have really inspired me to think better as a Marine Conservationist. The first piece of content was a short documentary called "Big Ocean Islands" which dove into the many issues facing pacific Island Communities that stemmed back to the 1940s when the US military conducted nuclear bomb tests among the islands.  The second piece of content was a podcast in the Speak Up for Blue Podcast Network called "The Guide To Mindful Conservation: Dancing In Pink Hiking Boots" by Dr. Ashley Scarlett. She interviewed Nikita Shiel-Rolle who lives on Cat Island in the Bahamas. Nikita discusses how colonialism is still in practice today and is conducted within conservation.  Content like this is truly inspiring and needs to be out there. So I give my thoughts about colonialism in science and try to find solutions (and ask for solutions from you) to improve Marine Conservation. Bonus Barrel welcomes Seigi back this week, after last weeks official (spin-off) episode! We start things off light with some amiibo hate, followed by Leff and Seigi having a long discussion about how much they love this game called Minecraft. Then things really HEAT up when Rob finally gets to talk about Pokken because that's what matters. Creep Corner this week is Cat Island. What is Cat Island? Are we able to comprehend it? Next up, we talk about those fake NX controller leaks and Nintendo in general. Seigi has no interest in non-nintendo games and kids should just shut up and get a Wii U. This weeks topic continues with more gaming Myths and Legends. We only get to three myths this week but they're still pretty fun and/or exciting. Sonic 3 and ol' MJ, Shen Long in Street Fighter 2, and another.. super duper secret ending in Cave Story? Seigi is on the case!
