This episode originally aired on Nov 24, 2022 (Thanksgiving Day). Sometimes our co-hosts really struggle to come up with a character to discuss for our show. But actor Raúl Castillo (The Inspection, Cha Cha Real Smooth, Looking, and now Cassandro) went with his gut, and what came to mind immediately was The Outsiders, and especially Matt Dillon's character of lead "greaser" Dallas "Dally" Winston. Jordan, Raúl, and you the listener will all learn at the same time just why this character stuck with him all these years. ***With Jordan Crucchiola and Raúl Castillo

We talk about improving your skill set, specifically how you can get better at sales while being honest. My favorite part about this interview is when Jeremy tells you how to handle the money ask you are about to make from a prospect. I bet you have wondered many times, when is the best time to bring up the cost. Being truthful when selling is a big deal in this episode. Jeremy tells us how believing in what you're selling and getting your sales team to do the same, while making sure everything is solid – like the way things work and the stuff you're selling – is super important. He says that showing your salespeople good stories from happy customers can make them feel good about what they're selling. Lastly, we talk about something cool: sharing work and listening to different ideas. Jeremy shares a story about when he realized that even if he's good at something, he can let others who are better at it help him. This means he can focus on what he's really good at, and it gives him more time to grow. Overall, this episode shows some shortcuts around sales calls, how you can better at selling, being honest, having a plan, and working well with others. Based on his own real-life experiences, Elegance Bratton's THE INSPECTION, tells the story of a young Black man who was kicked out of the house by his Christian mother for being gay. After spending years at a homeless shelter and on the streets of New York City, he decides to enlist in the U.S. military to become a Marine. Ironically, this autobiographical film takes place during the era of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' – a controversial policy that shunned openly gay people from entering the armed services. Join us as I SEE U Host Eddie Robinson speaks candidly with acclaimed filmmaker, Elegance Bratton, about his feature debut and future projects on the horizon. Bratton will share intimate details of how he came to grips with the ultimate dilemma of whether he'd stay out on the streets and die young to become a mere statistic or join the military and die young to become a war hero. The New Yorker will even offer up words of encouragement for parents, when visions and dreams they had for their own children don't quite pan out the way they expected them to.
Since Reno celebrates Pride in July, I'm going to try and get a few more pride reviews done before we hit August, but this is a review of a 2022 film that was HORIRBLY slept on. It's a damn shame because Gabrielle Union gives the performance of her career, Jeremy Pope is a young person who is on the come up, and Elegance Bratton is a director truly to keep an eye out on. I don't even want to tell you too much of a synopsis on this film outside of Jeremy Pope plays a young man who joins the service to make something of himself, but please go into this movie as blind as possible. This week on On Story, AFF Moderator Andy Volk sat down with writer-director Elegance Bratton and actor Raúl Castillo for a post-screening Q&A of their latest feature film, The Inspection. Released last November by A24, The Inspection is an absolutely heart-wrenching drama inspired by Bratton's own experience. The film follows Ellis French, a young, gay black man played by Tony-nominated actor Jeremy Pope who is rejected by his mother and family. With very few options for his future, Ellis joins the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that has cast him aside. This deeply moving film is a sharp look at how one can find strength, support, and a sense of belonging in the most unexpected places. Just as inspiring as the film is Elegance Bratton's own artistic trajectory, which exemplifies perseverance and determination in creation. Bratton began making films while serving as a US Marine after spending a decade homeless. Now an acclaimed, boundary-breaking director, writer, and producer, Bratton's films have played at over two hundred film festivals worldwide, including Sundance, Outfest, BFI, New York City, Black Star Film Festival, and of course, at the Austin Film Festival. Beyond Bratton's festival success, he made his television debut as the creator and executive producer of the Viceland series, My House, which was nominated in 2019 for the GLAAD Media Award's Outstanding Documentary category. Additionally, his 2019 documentary, Pier Kids, made its streaming debut in August of 2021. Also in 2021, Bratton received the Film Independent Truer than Fiction Spirit Award presented to emerging directors of non-fiction features. And let's not forget that Bratton holds degrees from both Columbia University and the NYU Tisch Graduate School of Film. Yet summing up Elegance by merely his degrees, accolades, and awards does not provide the full picture. A master of harvesting film narratives and the overlooked stories right in front of us, Elegance uses his vision to highlight the universal power of our shared humanity. Joining Bratton is actor, playwright, and Texas's own Raúl Castillo. Castillo stars in the film as Rosales, a drill instructor who takes French under his wing. Castillo's artful performance is a nuanced depiction of masculinity and vulnerability, subverting traditional narratives through the duality of Rosales's stern yet nurturing mentorship, a complexity Castillo was eager to explore. Known for his starring roles in Amexicano, Cold Weather, We Are the Animals, as well as his role as Richie Donado Ventura in the HBO series, Looking, Castillo is known for his truthful embodiments of complex masculinity. Originally a playwright, Castillo has brought authentic Latinx stories to off-Broadway stages through his plays Border Stories, a trio of one-acts about life at the US-Mexico border, Knives and Other Sharp Objects, which premiered at the Public Theater in New York City, and his dark comedic family drama, Between You, Me, and the Lampshade, developed with the Atlantic Theater Company. We were thrilled to have both Elegance and Raúl, two exceptional storytellers, at the Austin Film Festival to speak to their creative process behind the film. So, do I have your attention yet? Are you standing at attention? Good. Let's dive deeper into The Inspection. Clips of The Inspection courtesy of A24.
This episode contains SO MUCH GOODNESS! Not only are we serenaded by Broadway actor Matthew Griffin, experience lots of laughter, we also get a look into his career and faith journey so far. I was super encouraged and I know you will be too! Matthew was last seen in the play THE COLLABORATION on Broadway starring Jeremy Pope and Paul Bettany. Prior to production, he was a member of the hit show, TINA— THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL on Broadway. During his time in Tina, he has been featured in multiple upcoming theater projects, along with guest star appearances in tv shows including The Godfather of Harlem on Epix and Inventing Anna on Netflix. Matthew's next adventure leads him to a new play off-Broadway (currently unannounced). This all follows his experience of being an educator for three years before jumping into the arts. Outside of his career he is active in his church, loves fitness and discovering the best food joints in the neighborhood, writes music, and never ceases to learn about the world through experiences and mountains of books. [REBROADCAST FROM November 28, 2022] Inspired by the real life story of writer and director Elegance Bratton, "The Inspection" tells the story of a young gay man (Jeremy Pope) who struggles to find acceptance for his identity both at home, and as a part of the U.S. Marine Corps. Bratton and Pope join us to discuss the film.
This week, when we're not chatting about Cort's soap opera and whomever Sprina is kissing now, we're loving on two films that we watched for the Film Independent Spirit Awards: “The Inspection” and “Bruiser.” Coincidentally, they both feature the theme of toxic masculinity, shown from two different perspectives.“The Inspection” is based on a true story and stars Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union. It is written and directed by Elegance Bratton, the story on whom the film the based and whose character Pope plays in the film. Bratton was a “troubled” teen and was estranged from his mother. He joined the Marine Corps, which ended up being more difficult for him than for the average Marine because he's gay.Pope, who was recognized at the 2023 Golden Globes by Ryan Murphy, stands out in this role and gives a deeply heartfelt performance. As of this posting, the film is rentable.“Bruiser” is the story of 14-year-old Darious (played by Jalyn Hall) who is caught between his father (played by Shamier Anderson) and an enigmatic and charismatic stranger (Porter) who suddenly shows up in his life (played by Trevante Rhodes). It turns out that his dad and Porter have a complicated history, as do Darious and Porter. Darious is severely lacking in positive role models. The film is Miles Warren's directorial debut. It is currently available on Hulu. All this sounds pretty serious, and the films definitely are. But y'all know us. I don't think anyone has ever asked us “why so serious?”
Jeremy Pope - THE INSPECTION "The Inspection is a 2022 American drama film written and directed by Elegance Bratton. Inspired by Bratton's real-life experiences, the film follows a young man who faces homophobia, both at a Marines boot camp and at home from his mother. It stars Jeremy Pope, Raúl Castillo, McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, Nicholas Logan, Eman Esfandi, Andrew Kai, Aubrey Joseph, Bokeem Woodbine, and Gabrielle Union." - Wikipedia THE INSPECTION is a study in building character, especially in the sense that Ellis (Pope) more so builds the characters of those around him as they come to accept who he is. By eventually becoming a family away from family, they realize that his sexual orientation is as much a part of him as his drive, his trustworthiness, his ability to stand with his fellow grunts. And they're made better by understanding that his "difference" is really no different than any of theirs. Of course, not everyone sees it that way -- his mother Inez (Gabrielle Union) is somehow under the impression that he joined the military in order to become a hetero man who would get all the ladies. That somehow the training was a "get straight" camp. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so tragic. In this interview, Jeremy talks about his character's journey. Discovery is one of the most critical jobs of a salesperson, because we need to know if we can help the people we're speaking with! Unfortunately, many salespeople make discovery a one-time event in their sales process and then get frustrated when interest wanes, objections arise and priorities shift. Salespeople that ensure discovery continues throughout the sales process avoid those problems, and to learn how it's done we sat down with Jeremy Pope, a clinical hypnotist who now coaches salespeople and teams in how to stand up great sales processes. He showed us how ay salesperson can systemize discovery at any point of the sale to increase client conversion. It's all in this week's Bulletproof Selling podcast!

Inspired by the real life story of writer and director Elegance Bratton, "The Inspection" tells the story of a young gay man (Jeremy Pope) who struggles to find acceptance for his identity both at home, and as a part of the U.S. Marine Corps. Bratton and Pope join us to discuss the film, which is in theaters now.
"The Inspection" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and later screened at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) as the Closing Night Film. Elegance Bratton's feature directorial debut pulls from his own life experiences to tell a powerful, inspiring story of a Black gay man who joined the Marines when he had nowhere else to turn to in life for love, support, or purpose. Stars Jeremy Pope and Raúl Castillo were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with Dan Bayer and I about their characters in the film, working with Elegance, going to "boot camp," how important the story is for today's society, and more. Enjoy, and please check out the film in limited release from A24 on November 18th and then going wide on December 2nd. Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Director Elegance Bratton and cast members Jeremy Pope, Gabrielle Union, and Raúl Castillo, and producers Effie Brown and Chester Algernal Gordon present and discuss The Inspection, the Closing Night selection of this year's festival, with NYFF Executive Director Eugene Hernandez. Known for his affecting and dynamic documentary Pier Kids, about homeless queer and transgender youth in New York, and the Viceland series My House, on underground competitive ballroom dancing, filmmaker and photographer Elegance Bratton has made his ambitious narrative debut with The Inspection, a knockout drama based on his own experiences as a gay man in Marine Corps basic training following a decade of living on the streets. In a breathtaking first cinematic starring role, Tony– and Emmy–nominated actor Jeremy Pope is run through an emotional and physical gauntlet as a young man dealing with the intimidation of a sadistic sergeant (Bokeem Woodbine), his desire for a sympathetic superior (Raúl Castillo), and his complicated feelings toward the mother who rejected him (a revelatory Gabrielle Union). Bratton's film is a nuanced portrait of American masculinity and evocation of the military during the Don't Ask, Don't Tell era, as well as a forceful, electric work of autobiography. An A24 release.
