Oh my goodness it's Jason Bourne. That's right we're taking a look at all of the movies in the Jason Bourne-universe. Beginning with the Doug Liman directed Matt Damon starring action-espionage thriller The Bourne Identity. Set against a European backgrop and also featuring the likes of Franka Potente, Julia Stiles, Brian Cox, Clive Owen and Chris Cooper the story follows a man whom after beig dredged out of the ocean with no memory must follow a series of clues to discover the truth behind his past. And it turns out he's an assassin or whatever.
Matt, aka the Black Country Vlogger, has chosen the iconic Run Lola Run from 1998 this week. Checkout Matt's vlog here: https://www.youtube.com/@BlackCountryVlogger The production of Run Lola Run was a testament to director Tom Tykwer's innovative vision and determination to push the boundaries of German cinema. Filmed predominantly in Berlin, the movie leveraged the city's vibrant and modern aesthetic to create an urban, pulsating backdrop for the story. Tykwer's use of kinetic camera work and rapid editing, combined with a blend of live-action and animated sequences, gave the film its distinct and high-energy style. The unique visual approach was complemented by a techno-heavy soundtrack, composed by Tykwer and collaborators Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, which underscored the tension and pace of Lola's journey. These creative choices not only shaped the film's unique identity but also aligned with the burgeoning techno culture of 1990s Berlin. Casting was a critical aspect of the production, with Franka Potente taking on the physically demanding role of Lola. Her fiery red hair, a decision made during pre-production, became an iconic visual marker of the film. The production schedule was tight, requiring a mix of meticulous planning and on-the-spot improvisation to capture the dynamic movement through the city. Tykwer's hands-on approach and collaboration with his team ensured that the film's technical challenges—like its seamless transitions between timelines—were executed flawlessly. Released to critical acclaim, Run Lola Run became a breakout success internationally, cementing its reputation as a modern classic and demonstrating the potential of German cinema to innovate on a global stage. Plot Summary: In the 1998 German thriller Run Lola Run, directed by Tom Tykwer, Franka Potente stars as Lola, a young woman who embarks on a heart-pounding race against time to save her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). Manni, a low-level criminal, loses 100,000 Deutsche Marks in a botched money drop for his gangster boss. With only 20 minutes to find the money and prevent Manni from committing a desperate robbery, Lola is thrown into a frantic quest through the streets of Berlin. The film's narrative structure is one of its most unique features, unfolding in three different versions of the same story. Each version explores how small changes in Lola's actions and timing lead to drastically different outcomes. Whether by chance encounters, split-second decisions, or twists of fate, each run has profound consequences, shaping the lives of Lola, Manni, and the people they encounter. The film masterfully blends live-action sequences with animated inserts, set to an energetic techno soundtrack that drives the relentless pace. Tykwer's innovative use of time loops and alternative storylines keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, turning what could have been a simple rescue mission into a philosophical exploration of fate, chance, and the power of individual decisions. As Lola sprints through the city, encountering obstacles and allies, Run Lola Run keeps audiences captivated with its kinetic energy, visual style, and themes of love, loyalty, and determination. The film's fast-paced, high-stakes action, combined with its unconventional storytelling, has made it a cult favorite. Join our podcast review as we dive into this adrenaline-fueled thriller, discussing its groundbreaking narrative structure, stunning visuals, and whether its pulse-pounding excitement still resonates with modern audiences. Franka Potente never became a bonafide movie star after Run Lola Run, but her intensely iconic work in this breakout movie remains awesome 25 years later. Tom Tykwer has had a solid career of his own since writing and directing this video-game-esque flick with the butterfly-effect gimmick. He and future collaborators the Wachowskis were making some of the coolest movies around back then, taking advantage of new technologies, narrative devices and editing techniques. In truth, while Tykwer clearly loves Potente, he doesn't do so right by Moritz Bleibtreu's Manni (and the first part of the man's last name rhymes with "tribe" by the way, not "leeb"). Bleibtreu is a whiny screw-up who needs his dedicated girlfriend to save his life by racing around Germany for 20 minutes to come up with a small fortune. Lather, rinse, repeat. Twenty-five years ago, this high-energy German-language action thriller started to take the world by storm as it was also released in the U.S. becoming an instant cult phenomenon. The story it quite simple: Manny (Moritz Bliebtreu) is a young drug courier living in Berlin who has just bungled an important money delivery.....he's scared and desperate, so who does his call?? Why his Flaming Red-haired girlfriend...the titular Lola played by Franka Potente. She hangs up the phone and starts to....you guessed.....RUN to help him out And run she does....across Berlin running into a variety of different characters whom she may or may already know....and thus kicks off a relatively short adventure which we see play out multiple times over, each version taking off in different directions. As directed by Tom Tykwer (The International, Cloud Atlas) and with a catchy soundtrack loaded with catchy EDM, what results is is one of the more memorable graduates from the vaunted (cinematic) Class of '99!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week, we're back to the unfortunate Nic Cage double features -- this time with our boy Nicolas on either side of the law! First, there's the staggeringly sloppy cop thriller 211, in which Cage plays an aging cop who teams up with his fresh-faced rookie son-in-law and a teenage ridealong to thwart a four-man bank robbery in Massachusetts. It's got the politics and aesthetics of a well-meaning anti-drug PSA, a bloated, poorly staged shootout even at a sparse 80-some minutes. Then, we get real weird with it with Between Worlds, a wild supernatural dirtbag romance with Cage as a scraggly, widowed truck driver, whose fling with another doomed soul (Run Lola Run's Franka Potente) leads them down a road where his dead wife's soul zaps into the body of Potente's hot young daughter (Penelope Mitchell). Marathon screwing and over-the-top garden hose fights ensue, as Cage goes as wild as he can with a film seemingly made for five dollars. After being traumatised by last week's film Ghosts Can't Do It, you thought we would have it easy this week. Wrong! Did Marcey & Batch survives watching Bede's pick? Doug Liman wasn't the obvious person to direct The Bourne Identity and Matt Damon was an even less-obvious choice to play an assassin with a brutal case of amnesia, but their underdog thriller kicked off what became a beloved franchise. The incredible action scenes got even more kinetic in the sequels and the post-9/11 political subtext was more a factor in those ones too, so this first Bourne stands out for being a fairly-quiet action film for people don't usually like that sort of thing. It's also funny to think that during this same year, there was yet another in a series where a handsome, government-trained killer goes by the initials "JB". 007 had been making a mint on the big screen for decades, but along came Jason Bourne to one-up James Bond. However, none of that would mean very much if not for the soulful work of Franka Potente, who's one of the best co-stars Damon has ever had. So buckle up as the 468th Ellises' Analysis zips you expertly around the streets of Paris and tries hard not to forget what made The Bourne Identity such a sleeper hit. Our second episode, in which we discuss the 2002 film The Bourne Identity starring Matt Damon and Franka Potente. We arrived at this film from last weeks Adaptation through actor Brian Cox.
Do You Expect Us To Talk? returns to start a new series with what many consider to be the contemporary rival to Bond. Based on the book series by Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity stars Matt Damon as man with no memory of who he is. Only that he has two bullet holes in his back, the ability to fight and speak serval languages. Little does he know that he has the CIA after him who would rather terminate him to cover up an assassination attempt as well as the man who he tried to kill. Join Becca, Dave and Chris as we discuss if this franchise had a real impact on the Bond series, when did regular actors start to do action films, what has Franka Potente been up to and how good is Run Lola Run, who is the real Brian Cox, Clive Warren and try and fail to not pronounce Matt Damon in the style of Team America. Steven Soderbergh's new straight-to-streaming movie KIMI wears its many influences on its sleeve, but we saw our inspiration for this week's pairing in its protagonist's colorful dyed hair, reminiscent of one of the many eye-popping elements of Tom Tykwer's 1998 international breakout RUN LOLA RUN. But what really links the two films is the breakneck pace they share as they chase after women trying to achieve an urgent goal on a short deadline. This week we home in on RUN LOLA RUN to parse its interplay of style and substance, and debate how and to what extent this fleet film stumbles over its weighty themes of time, choice, and fate. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about RUN LOLA RUN, KIMI, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net. We may respond to it on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes, a weekly newsletter, recommendations, and more. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.
This week we kick the ball around with a very exciting guest for Run, Lola, Run! Do you know what time it is? Trick question. Join us as we discuss this groundbreaking film by the great Tom Tykwer, starring the most exquisite Franka Potente. We wax a little nostalgic about the age of the mall cinema, and then do a deep dive. What a treat our guest brought us with his energy and knowledge. We had such fun making this episode and hope you enjoy it, too.
Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.
Do you ever wish life had a reset button? In our next episode we discuss the German film Lola Rennt aka “Run Lola Run” (1998). Director Tom Tykwer takes us on a frenetically paced adventure against the backdrop of pre-Millennium Berlin as Franka Potente races to beat demon time and change the variables in her chaotic universe. The techno soundtrack (also credit to Tykwer) is (chef's kiss) superb!
