Katori joins Tom to discuss the concerns the late music icon had about the way her story would be told, what they learned they have in common, and why it's important to look at our favourite musicians and artists as people — not as myths.

Does seeing abortion on TV and film change the way people feel about it? You could argue that another big social issue — gay marriage — was helped by shows like Will & Grace and Ellen. Or that The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Murphy Brown helped normalize the idea of women in the workplace. Ahead of the midterms, Sam is wondering why more depictions of abortion onscreen haven't moved the needle on public opinion or access to abortion itself. Sam chats with Katori Hall about writing an abortion episode for her show P-Valley, which was based on the women's health organization at the heart of the case that overturned Roe v. Wade. Then, he talks with social scientist Steph Harold about the things onscreen abortions get wrong and the limits of representation. Send us your culturegeist. Interview with P-VALLEY Creator and Cast, Katori Hall, Nicco Annan, Elarica Johnson, Brandee Evans, Shannon Thornton, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Parker Sawyers #PValley is a popular series about the lives of strippers and the other people in a fictional town (Chucalissa) in Mississippi. Uncle Clifford is the house mother that runs The Pynk, the club where much of the show initially takes place. While strippers Autumn, Keyshawn and Mercedes, as well as the bouncer Diamond, are central to the show, Clifford and his relationships - particularly with rapper Lil Murda - also take center stage. In the interview, the cast and creator talk about flack they've gotten for the show, as well as the fact that many people are supportive of it. It's a great show, with fantastic art and characters, and heart - not "just a show about strippers." ~ Edit: It's not in the interview, but as I was telling Nicco (Uncle Clifford) after, the relationship between Clifford and Murda was/is adorable. (Until a certain point) it's healthy and has a natural ease of just two people who genuinely care about each other that's great to see! #loveislove ~ While #PrideMonth was officially last month, it's a celebration all year 'round! Happy #Pride2

Major themes from this season include: ⁃ Being haunted by the past and unhealed inner traumas ⁃ Uncertainty, disruptions and the inevitability of our own impermanence ⁃ The healing power of intimacy Major shout out to Katori Hall for making my Sunday nights on Starz sexy again. The “P-Valley” showrunner talks about growing up in Memphis and how going to strip clubs informed how her Starz TV series celebrates the culture and art form of stripping. Hall discussed how she was inspired by Barry Jenkins' “Moonlight” and used color light to capture the beauty of her casts' dark skin tones. The playwright-turned-TV creator also talked about her experience of being a first time showrunner, what she is building off for Season 2 (about to start filming), where she'll step into the director's chair for the first time.
