Today I sit down with Simone Missick an actress truly led by spirit. This kick-ass woman is no stranger to walking in faith and trusting the process. When she booked her breakout role of Misty Knight in Marvel's Luke Cage for Netflix she had only a handful of co-stars to her resume. She admits to struggling with self-doubt about choosing a life path as an actor. Her focus is on her inner journey over the business. This interview is a refreshingly honest and vulnerable look at what it means to literally walk into one's vision and be a light for others. Simone leads CBS' ALL RISE which is currently the most popular new network show of 2019! She is the first African American woman to lead a series on CBS, and it's been a huge huge hit for the network. She will also soon be seen opposite Anthony Mackie in the second season of Netflix's hit sci-fi anthology drama ALTERED CARBON. Happy Black History Month! As part of Backstage’s ongoing mission to provide platforms for BIPOC storytellers and amplify inclusive stories, we’re presenting a very special podcast episode for Black and non-Black listeners alike. Echoing questions the arts community has faced with particular urgency over the last year, “In the Envelope” has asked recent guests about the state of the biz: How do Black actors and creators navigate the entertainment industry today? How can white people leverage their privilege and allyship in creating a more inclusive Hollywood? What should individual artists of all backgrounds do to instigate systemic change? Prentice Penny, Aldis Hodge, Bob the Drag Queen, Rashida Jones, Justin Simien, Simone Missick, Jonathan Majors, and Janet Mock gave us frank answers to these questions and more. For Black listeners, there’s plenty of actionable advice on working in the biz; for non-Black listeners, we hope these conversations provide perspective, reflection, and a call to action. As Prentice says in a previously unaired clip, fighting for authentic representation and ending discrimination in Hollywood isn’t solely the responsibility of people of color: “It should be on the system to fix the system.” Check out coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement here: https://bit.ly/3a7QWo9 Joining this week’s Backstage casting insider segment is Destiny Lilly, New York theater casting director and advocate for actors and artists. In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

For inspiration on how to empower yourself as an actor—a profession that doesn’t usually feel empowering—listen to “All Rise” star Simone Missick’s advice: “So many more actors would be so much happier with the process of going to work, the process of auditioning, which is another part of work, if we recognize the power that we do have to advocate for ourselves.” That includes advocating for actors’ safety, particularly when filming amid the COVID-19 pandemic. A Howard University graduate originally from Detroit, Simone appeared Off-Broadway and in bit TV and film roles before breaking out as Marvel’s first black female superhero, Misty Knight, on Netflix’s “Luke Cage.” She recently starred as a bounty hunter on Season 2 of Netflix’s sci-fi venture “Altered Carbon,” and now leads Greg Spottiswood’s CBS legal drama “All Rise” as L.A. County Superior Court judge Lola Carmichael. Simone Missick made history for her powerful and extraordinary portrayal in Marvel's Luke Cage as TV's first black female superhero, Misty Knight, and has captivated audiences ever since. Touted as the show's "breakout star," Missick was featured as one of People magazine's "Ones to Watch" prior to the first season premiere. She continued to portray this impactful character in other shows, such as The Defenders and Iron Fist. Simone's other television appearances include CBS All Access' Tell Me a Story, the political thriller Scandal, Wayward Pines, and Showtime's crime drama Ray Donovan. Also, she starred in the comedy short Voicemail, for which she was nominated for the Best Actor Award at the NBC Universal Shorts Festival. Later this year, Simone will star in the second season of the series Altered Carbon, opposite Anthony Mackie. Previously, Simone filmed the lead in the independent film Jinn, directed by Nijla Mumin, which premiered at SXSW Festival in 2018. The film tells the deeply intimate and timely story of a woman who converts to Islam and how this affects her family dynamic. Outside of film and television, Simone's impressive theater work includes the Signature's Paradise Blue, written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Center Theatre Group's Citizen: An American Lyric. Based on a book of poetry by Claudia Rankine, adapted for the stage by Fountain Theatre co-artistic director Stephen Sachs, and directed by Shirley Jo Finney, "Citizen" fuses poetry, prose, movement, music and the video image in a provocative stage adaptation. Also, Missick starred as Sweet Tea in The Road Weeps, the Well Runs Dry at the L.A. Theatre Center, which earned her an NAACP Theater Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2014. Simone lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Dorian Missick, and pup Charlie. Her birthday is Jan. 19. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram @SimoneMissick. Today I sit down with Simone Missick an actress truly led by spirit. This kick-ass woman is no stranger to walking in faith and trusting the process. When she booked her breakout role of Misty Knight in Marvel’s Luke Cage for Netflix she had only a handful of co-stars to her resume. She admits to struggling with self-doubt about choosing a life path as an actor. Her focus is on her inner journey over the business. This interview is a refreshingly honest and vulnerable look at what it means to literally walk into one’s vision and be a light for others. Simone leads CBS’ ALL RISE which is currently the most popular new network show of 2019! We celebrate William Harrison Withers Jr. "Bill Withers," today.  Born in Slab Fork, West Virginia, July 4, 1938 in a family of 13, he the youngest, most people know him as an American singer-songwriter and musician who performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. He recorded several major hits, including "Ain't No Sunshine", "Grandma's Hands", "Use Me", "Lean on Me", "Lovely Day", and "Just the Two of Us." However, he was so much more and we learn about these other dimensions of a man who stopped recording for 33 years to have a family and a life with that family. The film, "Still Bill," co-directed by friends and colleagues, Damani Baker and Alex Vlack, is a wonderful portrait of this complex man's life from growing up in a coal mining town, to joining the navy to working in the air force making toilets, to fame in his 30s.  I am going to play a little of the audio here this morning following an interview with director, Damani when the film was debuting in a free community screening at the Kabuki Theatre in San Francisco 11 years ago.  We open with Amikaeyla Gaston singing "Lovely Day." We then shift to a conversation with Simone Missick, who portrays the character Camae in Katora Hall's play "The Mountaintop" (2013) at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA.  We play Nina Simone's moving Why did they kill the man of peace? After that song, well what could anyone say? So we play about 30 minutes of "Still Bill." Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdizl63aols  In between the two segments I read a review of the play. The show is Wanda's Picks tribute to two great men from a generation of men and women slipping into other dimensions so quickly we need to pay attention and enjoy their gifts now before they return to the earth. .  Aṣẹ, Aṣẹ, Aṣẹ-o.

Do you think #Aquaman should move its release date due to its crowded opening weekend? 6. Why do you think WB hasn’t turned to Greg Berlanti to be the ‘Kevin Feige’ for the DCEU? He’s killing it with the DC/CW universe. 7. FOX has accepted Disney’s offer according to several sources so now what would be the best and the worst way to introduce the X-men into the MCU? 8. I heard Marvel we’re talking about doing a Morbius movie. Do you ever think we’ll see vampires and Blade in the MCU? And could we ever see a cross over into a Spider-Man movie? Love you guys 9. If Schnepp was cast in a DCEU film, which character (that must be known, not an extra) would he likely be cast as? 10. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely recently revealed that while planning Avengers: Infinity War, they wanted to include MODOK in the film. If it had happened, do you think he would’ve helped the movie or hurt it? He would’ve been quite tricky to realize in my opinion. Beneath them in the darkness under Midland Circle and the vast skeleton of Shou-Lao, Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho)explains to Danny Rand (Finn Jones) that the dragon bones are the source of the substance used by the Hand for resurrection. As above so below destruction is sure to ensue, as Colleen and Claire Temple place the explosives to destroy the building, so the harvest of bones by the Hand will cause widespread destruction of New York City. In the skyscraper Wing (Jessica Henwick) and Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) are confronted by Bakuto (Ramon Rodriguez), who cuts off Misty Knight's (Simone Missick) arm as she arrives to help; but as Colleen kills Bakuto his headless body falls and sets off the timer for the explosives. Further down in the belly of the beast Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), and Luke Cage arrive to rescue Danny Rand from Elektra (Elodie Yung) and the Hand. In the heat of battle Matt’s senses detect the timer ticking down and he gets the others to leave as he remains to plead with Elektra to shun her darkness and recognise the good within her. As the timer ticks down Matt and Elektra are together as the building implodes around them, as well as Gao and Murakami (Yutaka Takeuchi) who failed to escape the cavern. In the aftermath of the incident at Midland Circle, the loss of Matt is felt throughout the remaining Defenders but most keenly with Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson). As Danny, Luke and Jessica begin to move on with their lives, protecting the city of New York a battered Matt Murdock slowly awakes in a convent as a call rings out for Sister Maggie. As always make sure you've watched the episode before listening to the podcast. The Defenders Episode Three Review Podcast Spoiler filled Synopsis Written by: Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Douglas Petrie Directed by: Peter Hoar Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) recounts the resurrection and training of Elektra (Elodie Yung) - The Black Sky - as she prepares her weapon for the coming conflict against the Iron Fist and the mystical power of K’un Lun. Elsewhere, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) tends to his tender jaw after his run in with the Iron Fist, but as Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) discovers who threw the punch she suggests that Luke meets with Danny Rand (Finn Jones) pointing out that he could help him. At the Chikara Dojo with Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) the tentative meeting leads to stories of dragons, a mystical city and the Hand; but things break down and the unbreakable skin from Harlem and the privileged chi-powered hand go their separate ways to the frustration of Claire and Colleen. At the NYPD precinct, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter)is released from Misty Knight’s (Simone Missick) custody and is determined to lose her new, weird and slightly annoying Attorney, but Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is harder to shake as he follows her knowing that she is a super-powered individual. However, the wily Jessica turns the tables to discover the special parkour abilities of her blind lawyer. As Jessica, Danny, Matt and Luke follow their own leads one common denominator focuses them on the offices of Midland Circle Financial. Danny using the clout of Rand Enterprises gets to meet with the Board and is confronted by Alexandra who, unfazed by his threats, aims to take the Iron Fist alive. As he battles to save himself from capture, Jessica, Matt and Luke converge on the boardroom and join Danny to fight the Hand, just as Alexandra unleashes her ultimate weapon against the newly formed quartet!
