    Good Hair, Bad Hair

Recently, the New York City's human rights commission stated that people have the right to wear their hair in its natural state which includes: Locs, Cornrows, Twists, Braids, Bantu Knots, Fades, Afros, and any other hairstyle in an uncut or untrimmed manner. For years, people of color has been unjustly discriminated against due to the texture or style of their hair. The New York City Commission on Human Rights will now consider such bias as racial discrimination. The law applies to every New York City resident, but it's overall focus is to specifically rectify the ill-treatment of black people. The main objective is to give legal recourse to individuals who have been demoted, harassed, punished threatened, or terminated because of the texture or style of their hair. The punishment can lead up to $250,000 in penalties on institutions that are found in violation of these guidelines. In this episode, we breakdown the importance of implementing a law that protects individuals of such discrimination. I talk about my own professional experience applying for a job as a 911 Operator back in 2002. After completing an arduous hiring process, I was told I had to cut my locs due to a 'Hair Policy' implemented on my start date. I went through several steps to seek legal recourse all to no avail. This begs the question, who will hold potential offenders accountable for their actions when such situations arise? Even to this day I find myself attempting to wear my natural hair in a manner I think my employer will deem appropriate. There is a desire to attain the proverbial "professional" look in order not to offend and seem less threatening in the workplace. Workforce upward mobility is predicated on perception not performance. It's based off of personal preference. Most individuals in our society possess predilections of comfort and convenience. It is more convenient to hire a person who looks like you because it brings a certain level of comfort. safe and comfortable. That sense of comfort can easily be misconstrue for competency. "New York City’s human rights commission is one of the most progressive in the nation; it recognizes many more areas of discrimination than federal law, including in employment, housing, pregnancy and marital status. Its legal enforcement bureau can conduct investigations, and has the ability to subpoena witnesses and prosecute violations." Unfortunately, racist stereotypes that are perpetuated in the workplace when it comes to black people is a microcosm of the greater world we live in. The "good hair, bad hair" narrative has a long lasting adverse effect that has seeped into many different aspects of society. It's still very much a conversation that needs to be conducted in the work environment and on a wider scale. Lastly, we discuss the plight many Americans face on a daily basis when it comes to the workforce. Many are consumed with feelings of frustration, resentment, anger, regret not to mention depression, anxiety and a number of other conditions that affects our emotional, mental and physical state. We talk a lot about prison reform, but when will job reform become a part of this nation's ongoing discourse? We spend a bulk of our time either at work or on work related activities which leaves us little time for our families or ourselves. I would like to take this time to tell our listeners to stay positive and don't get discourage or distraught. Optimism is key while taking the necessary steps to improve your current work situation. I know it's easier said than done, but positive self-talk works in ways you would not believe. Thank you so much for joining us today. Enjoy! REM (Raw Emotions Manifested)

As a child, I remember spending countless hours in front of the television watching “Back to the Future”. The 80’s sci-fi classic features a young Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, a teenager who is sent back in time to save his parents future with the help of his mentor Doc Brown played by Christopher Lloyd. I diligently daydream about driving a DeLorean designed just for time travel. I envied Marty McFly. Watching him journey back to a moment right before his parents met left me in awe. What a sight to behold — to see my parents young and in love. Oh! How I longed for the day to return to that time in history. Only if I could alter my parent’s trajectory to inevitably ensure a better life for our family. A life no longer marred by memories of a fragmented home and an absentee dad. Instead, I would have recollections replete with father and son time. Every little league baseball game, amusement park, movie, and sporting event would be cherished. Every hug and kiss would be accepted and appreciated. Every time he uttered, “I love you son” or “I’m so proud of you” would be honored and heartfelt. If only I could turn back the hands of time things would be much different, or so I had hoped. Subsequently, as I grew older, reality set in and my dreams of owning a DeLorean derailed. Until… One day I decided to become a Big Brother. I remember it like it was yesterday. Sitting in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) office waiting patiently to meet my potential little brother, I was nervous and apprehensive. I found myself wondering if my “little” would like me or would we even be a good match. As the tension build, he finally walked through the door with his Mother and little sister. The BBBS liaison introduced us. “Remington meet Jeremiah, Jeremiah, I would like you to meet Remington”. As time went on, I increasingly became more confident and comfortable in the choice I made. Once the initial interview ended, we all agreed…it’s a match! The day finally came for us to have our first outing together and we were both excited. We decided to keep it simple and go to the park and play Frisbee. We had a really great time, and instantaneously there was a connection. It wasn’t until our second outing that I had an epiphany. We decided to go bowling and grab lunch. Afterwards, Jeremiah glanced at me and asked, “What’s the relationship with your dad like?” Stunned by his question, I replied, “My dad and I do not really have a relationship. It’s been that way for quite some time now.” He paused briefly. “I don’t have a relationship with my dad either. I think that’s why they matched us together.” As I sat there speechless. It was at that moment I stared at him and saw my own reflection. I saw a seven year old boy scared and confused. Due to unforeseen circumstances in his life, he too was looking to alter his reality. That was seven years ago. That moment back at the bowling alley gave me perspective and purpose. I suddenly realized my role in life. I was never meant to play the role of Marty McFly. It was always to be Doc Brown, the Mentor. Now whenever I pull up in front of Jeremiah’s house, it feels like I’m stepping out of a DeLorean. Yes. The same DeLorean I used to dream about as a child. But it’s different now. Long gone are the days of wishing to go back in time in an attempt to alter my reality. My sights are now set on a greater purpose. Now every school project, every sports game, every conversation with Jeremiah creates new memories we cherish. Every hug is mutually valued. Each time I say, “I love you” or “I’m so proud of you” is welcomed and warranted. All the things I had hoped for as a child, I now have the opportunity to provide to Jeremiah. I believe being a prominent presence in his life during his formative years will fortify a foundation that will allow him to flourish in the future... continue reading at www.obsessivelyoutspoken.com

Depending on which coast you reside on...you may have an affinity for one artist over the other. In this short, but exciting episode of Obsessively Outspoken, we shed some light on the two iconic musicians and the legacy they left behind. They both had extraordinary careers in a very short amount of time. Their music and influence on the culture is still as impactful now as it was back then. We also take some time to look into the past and present battles between Nas/Jay-Z and Machine Gun Kelly/Eminem. Is beef and rap battles between MC's good or bad for the culture? Does it bring out the competitive spirit in a genre of music that started as a street sport of sparring from a lyrical standpoint? We would be totally remiss if we don't take a little time out to highlight two of the all-time greats like Kool G. Rap and Busta Rhymes. Enjoy!
