Eusebius McKaiser hosted well-known human rights and social justice activist, Mark Heywood, on his TimesLIVE podcast. They were in conversation about how new political players, especially those who will be contesting the 2024 general elections, could maximise their chances of making a real and positive democratic difference. Heywood and McKaiser started off by sketching their respective takes on the overall state of South Africa's democracy. Both of them focused on data that reveal various deep social crises, which rob most South Africans of living meaningful lives. Given their overlapping consensus, McKaiser quickly moved on to teasing out three critical themes from Heywood about the possibility that civil society could disrupt the current party political system by contesting political power, which the likes of Rise Mzansi are intending to do, as well as individuals like well-known activist, Zackie Achmat. The bulk of the podcast episode focuses on Heywood carefully explaining three broad themes: a) the importance of actively and immediately helping communities in practical ways to demonstrate what you could do, at scale, if voted into power; b) the importance of articulating about five very clear, radical, feasible and well-thought through ideas that you campaign on; and c) the importance of co-operating as new political vehicles (rather than each working alone) in order to contest and disrupt hegemonic political power most effectively. McKaiser and Heywood ended their conversation by also briefly reflecting on a) how new political entrants might deal with donors who are reluctant to fund them; b) avoiding political ideology and terminology that are overused and wooly; and c) learning the art of clear, explanatory and persuasive political communication. Produced by Bulelani Nonyukela.

In this episode, I talk to the incredibly knowledgable Cheryl Straffon. Cheryl has taught me so much since I moved to Cornwall about ancient sites and the lineage of goddess culture in this land.We discuss Cornish ancient sites, how she researches to bring the sites alive and how she combines intuition, science, anthropology and archeology to understand how ancient people used the sites. We consider the status of women in society and storytelling and journey through the ages to understand more about sacred places.About Cheryl:Cheryl Straffon spent her childhood in Cornwall, UK, and then studied English &Comparative Religion at King's College London University for a B.A (Hons) degree.Following this, she did a post-graduate Education diploma at Cambridge University and then taught for some years in Secondary and Further Education in Scotland and England, before taking up Bookselling Training and then Librarianship. In 1986 she returned to Cornwall to live, where she was the Library Manager of St.Just Library for 20 years, before taking early retirement in 2006. For about 15 years she was firstly the Secretary and then the Chair of C.A.S.P.N [Cornish Ancient Sites Protection Network], a Charity that looks after the prehistoric sites in West Penwith, Cornwall, before she stepped down in 2017. However, she still continues to play a role in the organisation as Deputy-Chair, and organises the annual ‘Pathways to the Past' event (a weekend of walks and talks amongst the ancient sites), now in its 16 th year. In 2018 she was awarded the annual ‘Heritage Champion of the Year' (Sir Richard Trant award) from the Cornwall Heritage Trust. For the last 36 years she has produced and edited a magazine “Meyn Mamvro”, about the ancient stones and sacred sites in Cornwall, and written books including “Pagan Cornwall: Land of the Goddess”, “TheEarth Goddess”, “Daughters of the Earth”, “Megalithic Mysteries of Cornwall”, “Fentynyow Kernow”, “Between the Realms”, etc. She has given a number of talks and workshops, and has been a central figure in the Goddess movement: for 15 years she edited a magazine “Goddess Alive!” as well as being a Trustee for Women's Land in Cornwall, a co-organiser of the Goddess in Cornwall event, and a trainer on the Priestess of Kernow course. She is married to her partner Lana Jarvis, an accomplished dowser, and they share a love of the Land and the Ancient Sites, especially in Cornwall, and also in Crete, where they have had a house built, and where they spend some time each year.E-mail address - info@meynmamvro.co.ukWebsite: www.meynmamvro.co.ukAbout Meghan:Meghan Field is a Qoya Teacher, Embodiment Coach, Irish Celtic Shaman and Social Justice Activist who lives in Cornwall, U.K.  Meghan is the Violence Against Women and Girls Strategic Lead for Plymouth City, has her own consultancy practice, is the owner of Sacred Kernow Retreats, the founder of The Intuition Conversations Podcast and the creator of multiple oracle decks. In the first episode of Season 2, I am speaking to Lauren, a wonderful yoga teacher and amateur mythologist. Lauren joins me as I start my deep dive into the importance of ancient wisdom in modern times. This is such a joyful conversation and we have a LOT of fun pulling cards from  Lauren's oracle deck and discussing Ancient Greek goddesses. We discuss what archetypes are and consider cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation. We learn how Lauren developed a love of Greek gods and goddesses and hear the depth of her knowledge through the card pulls. We also think about how connecting to the universal energy of archetypes help us to better understand ourselves. We deep dive into some of our favourite mythological figures and compare them to other lineages to see the commonality and what they can individually teach us. About Lauren:Lauren is a yoga teacher by trade and a mythologist in her spare time. As a young girl, Alexie Torres climbed atop the radiator underneath her ninth floor window in the Bronx River Public Housing Projects, watching fires burn through her borough. Torres didn’t understand that these fires were a result of “planned shrinkage” and “urban renewal” in the 1960s and 70s -- which meant, in theory, that municipal authorities could close down public services with the intention of redesigning and rebuilding better. For the residents of the South Bronx, though, it didn’t turn out “better." Fire stations were shut down even as fire emergencies rose, and residents, who had no voice in the rebuilding of their own communities, were increasingly displaced.  These early impressions would lead Torres to social and environmental justice, locally and nationally. By her early 20s, she founded Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) where she labored with young people on issues from policing to education and environmental justice. A cornerstone of her work was the reclamation of the Bronx River, which was highly industrialized and inaccessible to her community. She co-founded the Bronx River Alliance, which today continues the work of protecting the river.  As an urban planner, activist for environmental justice, and community organizer, Torres has lived into the full meaning of her given name, Alexie: “Defender of Humankind.” Torres’s mother and father were immigrants who came to the U.S. from Puerto Rico as teenagers. After being homeless for a while, her father got a job as a deli man, a dishwasher, and ultimately moved up to become a maintenance man in the public housing projects in which she was raised. As Torres grew up, despite how much she loved her family and community, she learned that the rest of the world would define her success by how far away she could escape from them. So in her 20s, she left the Bronx for Manhattan. Working a corporate career, she became “a conscientious objector to [her] own story,” But during that time, she also became involved with the Williamsburg activist group, El Puente, her introduction to the power of grassroots organizing. In 1992, Torres returned to the South Bronx to participate in Holy Cross parish’s anti-drug rally. When local drug dealers attempted to burn down the church and intimidate them, twelve hundred neighbors -- those the world might deem powerless -- came forward to march. “[To have] people coming from the margins and into the center,” Torres reflected, “… that's where the heart of my planning heart was born.” She went on to found YMPJ, with the mission to prepare young people to become prophetic voices for peace and justice, and served as its executive director for 17 years. Through YMPJ and affiliate projects, Torres has helped create new parks, provide access to the Bronx River, and clean up brownfields. Despite these external achievements, she recognizes that it is “even more important that I contribute to leaving a legacy of a community that understands its own power.” In 2013, Torres was awarded the prestigious Loeb Fellowship through Harvard University. Her service on the national stage has included the White House Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, which aimed to reduce poverty and inequality and create opportunity for all. She is the Managing Director of Jubilee Gift, board member of Fr. Richard Rohr’s Center for Action and Contemplation, and most recently, co-creator of the Soul of the Movement Fund to connect healers and wisdom keepers to social movements. For her body of work, she has been named one of "50 Visionaries Changing Our World." A mother of two, Torres has inspired a new generation of young leaders dedicated to promoting peace and justice in their communities. Her vision for change in the face of daunting obstacles has led to success in her efforts to effect positive change within public spaces and marginalized communities. She is a national voice on issues of faith, community organizing, and the sacred work of social justice. Please join us in conversation with this dynamic grassroots activist and defender of humankind.
