On Wednesday, Tulsa's City Council is set to vote on an ordinance that would limit what Tulsans can do on sidewalks and medians. The proposed ordinance comes after two incidents, one in 2023, and one in 2024, where two separate people were killed while standing in center medians.Councilor Phil Lakin, who spoke to The Frontier on Monday about the ordinance, said it was about public safety. Many medians in Tulsa are narrow, and in zones where the speed limit is above 25 miles per hour, he believes standing in the median is a safety hazard. The ordinance would also potentially apply to sidewalks that are within 18 inches of the street as well. But when it comes to enforcement, some, including City Councilor Laura Bellis, fear the ordinance will only be applied to those panhandling, and she fears fines associated with the ordinance could prove too costly. On this episode of Listen Frontier, we hear from Bellis, Lakin, and Deputy Council Administrator Sarah Davis ahead of Wednesday's meeting. I had the distinct pleasure to sit down with two leading voices from the Congress for New Urbanism this past spring for a frank conversation on our current housing crisis. Their different ages and life experiences offer us a wealth of perspective to learn from and leverage. Let's dive right in to learn together in order to better each of our efforts to solve the issues of housing in America. Todd Zimmerman and his partner Laurie Volk founded Zimmerman/Volk Associates four decades ago, to address the walkability and economic viability of cities and towns throughout the United States. They developed over that time their own methodology for completing the work they performed. Both got their start as journalists and like so many of us who came to development from a non-traditional background, leveraged their skills to bring fresh ideas to the realm of the built environment. Carlos Sainz Caccia is a Mexican born Urban planner living and working in Boston Massachusetts for the leading firm Utile. His perspective particularly caught my attention in the fall of 2024 as I participated in a debate on the merits of CNU's voice in solving the current housing crisis during CNU's regional conference in Providence, RI. We start our discussion with Carlos's take on what's driving housing's unaffordability. These conversations often quickly stream into the social, financial, cultural and other worlds that contribute to the problem but inform possible solutions. We then move to a broader look at the issues contributing with Todd. We're going to present these conversations over several episodes. Thanks for our friends at the Congress for New Urbanism for suggesting these interviews and introducing us to Carlos and Todd. We hope you enjoy.

The number of registered voters who choose not to be members of any political party is growing. In fact, in Oregon, the percentage of these voters is bigger than both registered Democrats and Republicans. But those who vote in the major party primaries are the ones that decide which candidates appear on the general election ballot that is open to all voters. While Oregon’s neighbors, Washington and California, have made changes to their primary systems to allow for more participation, Oregon voters have said "no" in the past to doing the same. Nonetheless, Rep. Mark Gamba, D-Milwaukie, is among the sponsors of HB 3166, which would scrap the closed primary system that only allows party members to vote. Gamba joins us to discuss how to best enfranchise non-affiliated voters (NAVs), along with attorney and political consultant Julie Parrish, who served four terms as Republican representative in the Oregon House.

In this episode, host Shannon Urquiola, Life and Parent Coach, goes deep into the unique dynamics parents face when raising autistic children, especially when their parenting styles don't align. Parenthood is often described as a rollercoaster of emotions, and it takes a unique turn when partners find themselves on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. Are your differences in parenting currently a source of negativity and conflict in your relationship? Shannon explores this common scenario, where one parent often takes the lead in research and advocacy, while the other may have different perspectives on their child's behavior. Emphasizing the importance of unity in parenting, Shannon discusses the three main parenting styles: authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. Recognizing and embracing each partner's parenting style is key. Shannon highlights the power of self-awareness and the willingness to adapt, noting that meaningful change starts with oneself. She also addresses how childhood experiences impact parenting styles, discussing how parents may unconsciously recreate or react against their upbringing. Listeners will gain practical strategies and actionable goals for fostering a healthy relationship between parents, including effective communication, private discussions, and avoiding disagreements in front of children. This episode serves as a guide for parents raising autistic children, offering a roadmap to navigate challenges, promote unity, and create a supportive environment for their child's unique needs. Dr. Espen Wald Jensen shares his origin story and how it led him to explore the connection between emotions and healing. He emphasizes the importance of understanding that we are more than just physical beings and that our emotions are a language of the body. Dr. Jensen explains that emotions are meant to be felt, not lived, and that they provide valuable feedback and guidance. He also discusses the concept of energy frequency and vibration, and how emotions that are not in motion can lead to sickness and disease. The conversation touches on the role of breath work and the biofield in processing and releasing emotions, as well as the connection between emotions and the chakras. Dr. Espen Wold-Jensen discusses the importance of understanding and working with energy centers, known as chakras, in healing and personal growth. He explains that each energy center is directly related to a specific area of life and that clearing and balancing these centers can lead to greater well-being. Dr. Wold-Jensen emphasizes the need to focus on positive thoughts and emotions, as well as taking aligned actions, in order to manifest desired outcomes. He also highlights the importance of purifying the body and mind through practices such as fasting, meditation, and breathwork. Twenty years ago today, the United States invaded the nation of Iraq, intent on removing the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein and installing a stable democratic government. What followed instead was two decades of political instability and horrible sectarian violence that has yielded a modern Iraqi state that remains plagued with corruption and other problems, and is increasingly under immense pressure from the nearby regime in Iran.To gain perspective on the legacy of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and how it continues to shape the relationship between the two countries today, Lawfare Senior Editor Scott R. Anderson sat down for conversations with two individuals whose personal and professional lives have been intimately tied up in the last two decades of the U.S.-Iraq relationship. First, Scott sat down with Ambassador Doug Silliman, who is now the president of the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington, and who previously served in numerous capacities in Iraq, including as ambassador, over his decades-long career as a U.S. diplomat. Scott then sat down with Salem Chalabi, an individual who has held numerous positions across several administrations in the Iraqi government over the past two decades, most recently serving as the head of the Trade Bank of Iraq until January of this year. In each conversation, they discuss the legacy of the U.S. invasion, how it impacts the bilateral relationship today, and the central role Iran has come to play in the country.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
