Guess what? I'm frigging back! I took a hiatus because my body needed a little bit of a rest. And so did my brain and literally so many other things, and I've got really exciting news, I'm engaged! That is a very exciting thing for me to share with everybody. I'm so excited. If you want to see how the proposal went down, you can find that literally everywhere. I post things because I'm so freaking excited to be engaged to Justin Decloux! You can also listen to him on past episodes, or you could find us on our Pineapple Skeleton YouTube page.Let me tell you why I'm back. I decided first of all, that I still really enjoy doing podcasts for my clients. But the other thing that I really enjoy is helping people find a way to make money with their creative pursuits. So I thought, why not share with you what I know about how to start a creative business? And today I'm going to start things off with an episode about choosing a creative business. And I'll be asking these questions to help you choose your creative business! Can you picture yourself doing this creative thing for more than a few weeks, with sustained interest?Do you have a background in this creative thing, or do you need to take a course to become proficient in it?Is someone else already doing this? If so, how can you differentiate? (Bonus - the fact that someone else is already doing it means there's a market for your product or service! This is a good thing!)Does the amount of time it takes to do your creative thing equal out how much you want to get paid? Look at the current market and see how much people are paying for your product or service to get an idea of this. That's all for now! If you liked this episode and want to hear more, make sure you follow me on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcasts! You can also find me on TikTok and YouTube. Are you looking for different ways to promote your podcast? Well you might just want to try Pinterest! And on today's episode of The Ultimate Creative Podcast, my guest Tara Reid is sharing exactly how you can use Pinterest to promote your podcast and grow your audience, without having to do a lot of extra work!Tara Reid is a multi-passionate, creative business owner (sound familiar?) with THREE BUSINESSES. She started out with her product business selling jewelry in 2007, and in 2015 pivoted to more services for entrepreneurs. Tara's clients wanted to start implementing more Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which was great at first, until the creativity disappeared from the equation. So Tara used her creative skills along with her technical online business skills, to create customized Pinterest services for her clients! The combo of both skills was a perfect fit for Pinterest! And for those of us who don't have/want to spend many hours of the day creating up to 5 pins for each podcast episode, Tara has a seriously amazing Podcast Marketing Template Bundle for Canva, full of customizable pins, Instagram posts and more! This is a very special episode of The Ultimate Creative Podcast. Why? Because one of my amazing business coaches, Shelagh Cummins, is coming in to drop some SERIOUS MAGIC into your ears! Here, I'll prove it with this quote:“It's not going to be possible if you just will it to happen, you actually have to take actions in order to get those results.” - Shelagh CumminsBOOM.Oh wait that wasn't mind blowing enough? Hang on I've got another one:“I think we just need to stop accepting mediocrity. We are better than mediocrity.” - Shelagh CumminsOHHHHHHH BABY! We are better than mediocrity! Heck yes we are!Aside from Shelagh's many amazing quotes in this episode, the reason I wanted to bring her on the show was really to help all my creator listeners understand that there is an essential business element that needs to be addressed, that I really don't think content creators believe they need. Why? Because I see it all the time - creators want to earn money from their content, but aren't putting in the work on the business side to truly understand how to communicate their value (and frankly, believe that what they have to offer is of value) to the world. So if you're one of those content creators that's thinking “dang, I do really want to earn money from my content, I know that my stuff is great, and I want to take it to the next level” you should absolutely tune in to hear:Why it's important that content creators view themselves as business ownersThe most important thing content creators can do to make the shift and begin treating their content as a business or revenue streamHow to turn dreams into action, and action into profit! And I highly encourage you to check out Shelagh's offerings if you want to take the next step towards becoming a business owner:The Road To Seven: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/The Business Accelerator: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/the-business-accelerator-liveThe Capital Access Program (seriously cool): https://www.theroadtoseven.com/capital-access-programThe Road To Seven Podcast: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/theroadtosevenpodcastEpisode 58 - The Hidden Microcosm of Entrepreneurs: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/theroadtosevenpodcast/the-hidden-microcosm-of-women-entrepreneursFree Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/867037907397297If you're in need of help to launch your podcast, or possibly to revive it, my team can help you out!Check out my new FREE masterclass, 5 simple steps to launch a podcast at https://theultimatecreative.com/simple-steps-to-start-a-podcast/Podcast Production Production - Let us take all the extra stuff off your plate! Are you trying to get more visibility but have no idea how to pitch yourself to podcasts? Are your cold pitch templated emails just making podcasters mad? Then you need to listen to this episode of The Ultimate Creative to hear how Podcast Visibility Strategist, Elizabeth Krajewski can help you ditch the cold pitch and build intentional relationships so that you can grow your audience by being on other podcasts!Elizabeth shares her creative journey, and how working in podcast management eventually led her to podcast visibility strategy, which allows her to feel truly fulfilled and creative. How? It's in the details.Elizabeth doesn't just write a cold pitch and send it to hundreds and hundreds of podcasts that have nothing to do with her clients. Heck no! Because that's annoying and podcasters hate it! Instead, she does the research. She dives deep into her client's mission and purpose, and aligns them with podcasts that have audiences who will get a lot of value out of hearing from them. The best advice when pitching yourself to podcasts:Elizabeth says to “come up with one topic for your pitch, and format it the way the podcaster normally formats their episode titles. Because that way, they're going to envision you on the podcast already.”And of course Elizabeth also shares what you should include in a package when you pitch yourself to podcasts, as well as a very awesome FREE podcast guesting strategy guide which you can grab from the links below!About Elizabeth:As a podcast visibility strategist Elizabeth Krajewski is on a mission to elevate female entrepreneurs' voices so they can inspire and engage with more clients through their podcast interviews. Whether she's researching relevant podcasts to pitch her clients to or working on topics that amplify her client's voices, she uses her experience and network to provide her clients an unforgettable experience. Elizabeth knows that in order to land podcast interviews that convert for her clients she needs to lead with value and build genuine connections. When she's not working with her clients or being active in her local community, she loves to explore new travel destinations, check out local restaurants with her partner, or curl up with a good book that usually includes a cat snuggled next to her.Elizabeth's Links:> bit.ly/podcastvisibility> https://virtuwellsolutions.com/ultimatecreative> https://instagram.com/virtuwellsolutionsMore Links:> Join me every Thursday at 11am EST for TUC Thursdays Live on Instagram! https://instagram.com/the_ultimatecreative> The Ultimate Creative Podcast Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tucpodcommunity/Learn how my team can help you launch and grow a podcast:> Free Masterclass: 5 Simple Steps to Start a Podcast: https://theultimatecreative.com/simple-steps-to-start-a-podcast/>Learn at your own pace with Podcast Rocket: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocket> Already have a podcast? Do you suffer from procrastination? This episode is for you. I covered this in part on an IG live last week which you can join every Thursday at 11am EST. But today I want to go a little deeper into the big goals side of things. On the live we talked about, Why do you procrastinate? How do you stop yourself from procrastinating? What are the benefits of procrastinating and how can you make it work for you?So today I thought we'd talk more about what happens when you set ginormous goals for yourself and then totally bail on them, whether you want to or not. What happens when you set big goals?Sometimes when we set very big goals for ourselves it can conjure up feelings of fear - what if I fail? What will people think if I don't do what I say I'm going to do? And then there's feelings of overwhelm - How will I get from where I am now, to this massive huge goal, I don't even know the first step? And finally, it can feel like you're trapped. You've committed to this goal, you've told everyone you know what you're doing - and now you have a sense of responsibility to deliver on something that is causing way more panic than joy in your life.Like launching a podcast. That's a big dream! And if you've never done it before, it's overwhelming! At least that's what my clients and students say when we start talking about why they haven't done it yet. So what I do as always is break everything down into tiny little steps. Obnoxiously tiny. No matter what your goals are, or your reason for procrastinating on your big dreams, this process can help you. Give it a try and write down a bunch of little steps that you need to take so that you can accomplish your dreams! And if your dreams happen to be to start your own podcast, you can just enrol in Podcast Rocket which is now available on-demand at https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocket Head on over there now to take action on your BIG GOALS to start a podcast and grab your spot in Podcast Rocket!Links:Join me every Thursday at 11am EST for TUC Thursdays Live on Instagram! https://instagram.com/the_ultimatecreativeThe Ultimate Creative Podcast Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tucpodcommunity/Learn how my team can help you launch and grow a podcast:Learn at your own pace with Podcast Rocket: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketAlready have a podcast? Today on TUC Thursdays Live we're talking about all things procrastination! Why do you procrastinate? How do you stop yourself from procrastinating? What are the benefits of procrastinating and how can you make it work for you?
Pro podcaster and filmmaker (and the love of my life) Justin Decloux is back for an episode all about creativity! And we're getting real to answer the question, why is creativity so hard?Today we're talking about why it's so hard to be creative, because we both struggle with this from time to time. And then there are times when we're super prolific. When Justin realizes that creativity is not coming to you as easily as he'd like it to, often times it's just about taking a nap and getting some space, and then moving on.For me, I just get super frustrated and angry with myself and one of my big tipoffs that I'm not in particularly creative mood is that I'm focusing on very mundane tasks that really could be done at ANY other time!We also talk about the value of being creative with a collaborator. This weekend we shot and edited 3 sketches about this new character named No Luck Chuck who gets killed by a gorilla at the end of every scene in very bizarre ways. Since Justin was in a bit of a creative dry spell in his work, we talked about the impact that having a collaborative project has on his ability to get back into a creative mindset. We also discuss the idea of self-editing when working with collaborators, and knowing how to manage your comfort levels so that creativity just flows naturally.Make sure you tune into hear more about:
Do you ever have those moments when you're like “I'M GOING TO WRITE A MOVIE” or “I'm GOING TO WRITE A BOOK” and you get so excited about it but you don't have a clue what the steps should be to make it happen? Well today I'm going to be sharing a few ways to reverse that and stick to your creative goals! These are a few reasons why I ditch my creative goals and some I've heard from others:
If you are feeling a little lost, you're creating content just for the sake of creating content and you're not feeling fulfilled, you might need to come back to your purpose.I recently joined a group of amazing women in Shelagh Cummins' accelerator program and this is what I learned about defining my process. Shelagh's program is obviously way more robust and I'm just sharing my own key takeaways here, but if you're struggling to figure out what the hell to do with your content, your business, or your life, this might be a helpful episode for you.Why is purpose important for figuring out your creative path/your business- Clarity on your path - you know exactly where you're going and how you're going to get there-More focus - there's no question that you're working towards something specific and you have a connection to it, that helps with the distractions-Clear messaging - people know what to expect from you and you become the “go-to” person for your contentHow to figure out what your purpose is-Create a list of everything you prioritize. Things like - prioritizing client calls over graphic design, or writing the outline of your podcast episodes over editing. -Note where the themes come together - are they overlapping in a particular area? For me it was storytelling. Bringing together my passion for audio & film and tv with the heart of the content - stories. How do I share other's stories, or help them to share their stories?-Test this out - write it in your IG bio or the next time you introduce yourself, tell the new person what you do by sharing your purpose. What to do now that you know-Start updating your content to reflect what your purpose is all about! That might mean new graphics, new podcast intro/outro, new podcast altogether!-Continue tweaking to make sure it feels right for you going forward. -Help others to do the same! This is tough stuff so if you've successfully figured it out, I'd encourage you to share! While you're at it, join The Ultimate Creative Podcast community on Facebook and share your purpose with the group! I'd love to learn what drives you, and how you make your purpose work for you!Links:-The Ultimate Creative Podcast Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tucpodcommunity/-Shelagh Cummins' Business Accelerator: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/the-business-accelerator-live-The Road To Seven Podcast: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/theroadtosevenpodcast-The Missing Pillar of Health Podcast: https://greenathome.ca/podcast-Descript Editing App: http://descript.com/?lmref=gsTrpALearn how my team can help you launch and grow a podcast:-Learn at your own pace with Podcast Rocket: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocket-Already have a podcast? Have you been sucked into the #hustle and #grind of entrepreneurship? Is your creativity being compromised because you're working all the time? Well my friend, this episode is for YOU. This week on The Ultimate Creative Podcast I'm talking with Christy Cegelski, host of the podcast Captivate + Convert about how she started her copywriting business, what it was like to develop (and stick to) boundaries within the business, and how she uses her podcast as a way to support the core mission of her business - to help more women achieve wealth, success, and independence, and to do it in a sustainable way.“Sometimes I do that by creating email funnels so my clients can automate their sales process and save time. And sometimes I have a guest on the podcast to talk about how to address and managing anxiety, because you can't effectively run your business if you're having panic attacks every day. To me, success isn't just about how much money you make. It's about really the quality of life. So the way I see it, both of those quote unquote ‘services' align with my core mission.” - Christy CegelskiTune into this episode to hear:How Christy's copywriting business came to be, and how it has evolved to match her lifestyle over timeChristy's motivation to create content that empowers her listeners to not do "all the things,” but to find satisfaction in what they love insteadChristy's top 3 non-negotiables to having a successfully stress-free business?Don't forget to rate, review and follow The Ultimate Creative Podcast wherever you get your podcasts!Links:Captivate + Convert Podcast: https://christycegelski.com/podcast/Captivate + Convert Episode 10 - From $35/Hr To 5-Figure Months: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1332115/6016957Captivate + Convert Episode 27 - Building A Multi-Passionate Business With Cara Alwill: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1332115/7815829TUC episode 57 Reinventing Your Content: https://theultimatecreative.com/reinventing-your-content/Christy's Done In A Day package: https://christycegelski.com/hire-meChristy's IG: https://www.instagram.com/christycegelski/Learn how my team can help you launch and grow a podcast:Learn at your own pace with Podcast Rocket: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketAlready have a podcast? Feeling creatively stuck? Not sure how to get through your creative blocks? Well I've got GREAT news for ya! I've put together my top 10 things that I do to get creatively unstuck to start being creative again!I'm going to challenge you to make your creativity your responsibility. That means pushing through and working on your craft no matter WHAT. Well we can all take sick days and time for ourselves, but if you have a goal and want to make it happen, it's all going to come down to you! Here are my top 10 favourite things to do help me get creatively unstuck: Go outside! Go anywhere you canTake an active recovery break - Take in someone else's art that you wouldn't normally for a different perspectiveMake lists of thingsSchedule 20 min per day to mechanically do your creative thingFind a writing group (yes, even if you don't like participating in group things)Let go of control & perfectionism, just put something out there! Who cares what it is?Give yourself a set of rules to stay within.Reflect on things you've been super successful with creatively before - maybe even over a long period of time!Write a story about literally anything, make sure it has a beginning, middle and end. It could be 2 paragraphs long, I don't care, just practice the art of storytelling to remind yourself of the big picture. You can also look up LOTS of free writing exercises online.Journal every day and process your FEELINGGGGSSSS! Your creativity is your responsibility! At the end of the day if you're making your creative passion a career, there is a level of professionalism you need to be bringing to it. Creativity and success need to be made possible by your dedication to your passions and craft. That means working on your creative output on the daily, not just when “the spirit moves you” - even if your creativity is stuck. The less we work on our craft, the less we're able to develop it. It's not about getting things perfect every time, it's really just about the journey and what you learn the whole way through. And yeah, that's what they all say - and if you're like me (totally impatient) this is basically impossible. But, that's just the nature of creating things, pals! It's a long game that needs to be nurtured! What are some things you do when you get creatively stuck? I'd love to hear from you! Feeling a little #burntout on your business? Sick of doing the thing you literally started because you felt incredibly passionate about it, and now you feel resentful? This is an episode of The Ultimate Creative you don't want to miss.In this episode I'm talking with Michael Wood, Founder & CEO of Helium Ventures, a website design company turned video company turned website design company turned complete client experience from start to finish all the bells and whistles company. Yes, it is a LOT of change. Michael and I worked on websites together ages and ages ago (you can listen to my episode on the website design part of my career here) when he realized that in order to grow his business, he'd have to start delegating out work in order to maintain the pace he had been working at. Throughout this time, we've both had our fair share of #burnout and had to come up with creative ways to get through it, and then avoid it at all costs so it never happens again! In this episode you'll hear:How we have experienced burnoutWhat we did in order to get through it and start functioning normally againHow we actively work to prevent more burnout from happeningMake sure you hit subscribe or follow on your podcast app so you never miss an episode! I've got some real sh*t to share with you. And it ain't pretty. But it is super fricking empowering.Since starting my business over 3 years ago, every single year around the same time my world is totally shattered. It's a pattern. It's one that I know I fall into, and one I knew darn well I could avoid if I only knew what the h-e-double-hockeysticks to do about it.Every single year, I got hit with a surprise $10,000 tax bill. Now, I call it a surprise, because I just had no clue what the hell I was doing. I was bringing in revenue, had no problem hitting the 6-figure mark 3 years running, but I didn't have a financial plan. So when it came time to pay “the man” I was legit fucked. And it would send me into a downward spiral tailspin everrryyyy singgleeee timeeeeeeughghghghghghghghgh! WHYYYYYY.But the thing is, I had no idea what the hell to do! So I avoided my biz finances, thinking “oh I'll just get a big contract and put all of that in my tax savings account and I'll be totally fine come June when my corporate taxes need to be filed.”WRONG.Avoiding the issue just made it worse.Enter my lovely wonderful financial coach, Melissa Houston to literally save my butt.I started working with Melissa last fall when I got an email telling a story about someone who had been facing the exact same challenge. I immediately booked a call with her, and basically hired her on the spot to help me get my finances in order.Pals, my life has been CHANGED ever since! And guess who has more than enough cash stashed to pay the tax bill in two months? THIS GAL.So here's what I want you to do. If you've been in this position before, or if you're just starting out and you need to figure out how to set up your biz finance fundamentals, listen to today's episode of The Ultimate Creative Podcast to learn what not to do, because I ask Melissa a LOT of very important questions I wish I'd had the answers to when I got started!Links:Melissa's free training: https://melissa-houston-cpa-cga.mykajabi.com/a/2147486133/CLLcP9ELMelissa's course, The Confident Cash Method: https://melissa-houston-cpa-cga.mykajabi.com/a/2147486125/CLLcP9ELMelissa's Podcast: https://www.melissahoustoncpa.com/think-like-a-cfo-podcastFree resource - The 4-Step Roadmap to Biz Finance Freedom: https://melissahoustoncpa.lpages.co/4-step-biz-finance-roadmap/The Business Society https://thebusinesssociety.co Work With Me:Podcast Production: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcastingPodcast Coaching: https://theultimatecreative.com/rocket-fuelConnect With Me:Instagram: https://instagram.com/the_ultimatecreativeP.S. What do you do when you realize that something isn't working for you as a content creator? You've lost the passion for what you're talking about. The spark isn't there anymore. Does that mean you should quit? Heck no!It just means you need to get back to your “why”.Over the last few weeks I've been doing a lot of soul searching. We do that as entrepreneurs, it's a constant introspective personal growth and development type of career. Why am I not making more sales? Probably because I've got a money mindset issue. Why don't I have any time? Probably because I still believe that I'm the only one that can do the things in my business. It's an ongoing push and pull.In facing tough questions like this and figuring out what's behind the block points, I had the opportunity to participate in Shelagh Cummins' Business Accelerator program last week. We went through a two-day bootcamp of re-aligning with our purpose and tying it into our core offers. It was a mind-blower of a two-day event and SO helpful if you need to get back in touch with your “why”.So I had been hitting burnout pretty frequently because I didn't feel connected to my business, and it turns out, I STILL believed that I needed to seek out super corporate business suit type entrepreneurs. I don't work with anyone that fits that description. Like, even remotely. But the shift had to come from my messaging - and realizing that I'm not actually working with entrepreneurs specifically, I'm working with content creators. And I have a much stronger connection to the title “content creator” than I do “entrepreneur” because of the simple fact that is has the word “creator” in it. I love creativity! But I was concerned that I'd be leaving out my clients that don't self-identify as creative people. So in this episode I'm sharing some behind the scenes of my new rebrand - which is kind of just re-igniting the original brand, and the reason why. I'm also going to share with you the steps you can take to do this too if you feel like your content needs a bit of an update.I also want to share that it is 100% ok to change things up with your content. You are a human. Humans grow and change. And your interests and priorities and beliefs will change. So bring people along for the ride with you, because they're tuning in for YOU. Not your specific expertise. They just like you.Links:The Business Accelerator: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/the-business-accelerator-liveThe Road To Seven Rebrand: https://www.theroadtoseven.com/theroadtosevenpodcast/the-road-to-seven-rebrandTo learn more about how I can help you build your dreams through podcasting & content, head over to https://theultimatecreative.com or follow me on Instagram at @the_ultimatecreative and let's chat!Don't forget to rate, review and follow this podcast so you never miss an episode. In the first episode of Season 2, fellow podcaster Chris Swail and I talk about how to manage chaos, so that you can keep on being the super productive creative powerhouse you are! This episode is a cross-over, you can check out Chris' podcast, A Little Bit Better, wherever you get your podcasts!
There's a new season in town! Ultimate Podcast Marketing is shifting focus to incorporate broader topics that will help creatives and entrepreneurs to grow their audiences and earn money through their podcast and video content, without the #hustle and grind. I'm SO excited about this because it means that I'll be sharing more with you about my multi-hyphenate life, the challenges and magical things I face as an entrepreneur and a creative (specifically bridging the two together) and I'm going to be bringing in lots of guests to talk about different ways to use your creative powers to achieve a life you absolutely love!So I decided that it made sense to start with a new season. I'm just over a year into this podcast, and if you're a long-time listener you might recall that it actually started out as “The Ultimate Creative” podcast before it turned into Ultimate Podcast Marketing. When it began, the focus was actually closer to the shift we're about to make with this new season. And that's the beauty of having your own creative business, it grows and evolves with you, but the core values and core messaging don't change that much.In working with a business coach, Shelagh Cummins, I've been uncovering some of the core values that really drive me as a person, as well as a creative entrepreneur. Specifically, that I want to help people to earn money through their content. So whether you're a creative that doesn't believe you can actually make money with your art (yet) or if you're an entrepreneur that doesn't believe you can be creative (yet) the new take on The Ultimate Creative podcast is definitely going to bring you the inspiration you are craving, as well as actionable ideas you can take to accomplish your goals.I've struggled for a really long time to figure out how to blend creativity and entrepreneurship together. It's like there were always two pieces of me that just wanted to fight all the time, as though one couldn't exist without the other. But the thing is, I exist, so therefore, they exist together. Seems simple enough but this journey has been something like 15 years in the making, and it's still happening. Literally right now. And if you feel that disconnect - like there's something that frustrates you about your business because it's not creative enough, or that you can't tap into your creativity and you feel stuck, or that you can't use both of your creative and business skill sets together, I encourage you to join me in season 2, and engage with me about the topics we'll be covering. Now, I want to assure you that I still very much have my finger on the pulse of all things podcasting and I'm going to continue to be your go-to person for podcasting questions. In fact we're still going to cover podcasting on this podcast, because I believe podcasts are such a great vehicle for sharing a message, building an audience and helping you to create a life you love. All that's happening is that we're adding to this mix with conversations about your content, your videos, the messaging, how you tell stories, how you connect with your audience, and how you can monetize your content and/or become a thought leader. And finally, as I mentioned, I want to take a more intuitive, mindful approach to entrepreneurship and my business generally. So we'll be getting into conversations with some amazing entrepreneurs and creators about their processes, and how they “balance” all of the pieces to stay Launch your podcast with Podcast Rocket! In today's episode of Ultimate Podcast Marketing, I'm talking with Kathryn “RaRa” Asaro, a podcaster and entrepreneur (among many other things) about finding your confident voice. At age 50, Kathryn decided to completely change careers. She reinvented herself dived head first into the industry of network marketing. At the ripe age of 50 she, “Hey, I can do that. How hard could it be?” And she quickly learned what an understatement that was! From all the careers she'd had previously (including but not limited to: New York real estate broker, psychologist, personal trainer, nutritionist) she figured it would be easy. Just like she figured podcasting would be easy. “I do things that I have no idea how to do and then figure it out along the way.”Luckily for us, she stuck it out!Co-host of the B.U. Network podcast and co-owner of the B.U. Network - a business designed to help people draw out their confidence to perform better with presentations, podcasts, public speaking - anything requiring “putting yourself out there”. It's day three of 5 days to start your podcast! As you know, this week I'm sharing a replay episode every single day from my archive to celebrate the kick off of my course Podcast Rocket which is my 5-week program that takes you from podcast concept to launch, with video lessons, live calls, and a zillion templates to make your life SO much easier. Doors for that program open up next week on April 7, in exactly one week from now! And I'll be doing a live info session that day too which I'd love to see you at. Make sure you sign up for that here!Without further ado, here's the replay for Episode 25, Don't start a podcast without these 3 key things - which originally aired on September 8, 2020.---You're getting ready to start a podcast, and things are starting to feel JUUUUST a little overwhelming! But here's the thing, you really only need these three key things to get started. So get out your planner and let's start that podcast!1. A content planIt's pretty common to get caught up in the excitement of starting a podcast, and you might actually have loads of topic ideas! But how do they all fit together? Podcasting, like any other type of content, needs a plan. If you don't know where you're going with it, you'll end up driving in a direction that makes no sense for your goals.2. A podcast hostI'm not talking about you, silly! I'm talking about a place where you upload your episode files every week to be distributed to all the platforms, like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, yadda yadda yadda. A podcast host is basically the same thing as a website host. For a certain amount of money, you get to store your audio files in one place.I've been getting very into BuzzSprout as of late, because they make it super easy to submit to the different podcast directories, and at about $12/mo on the basic plan, it's very affordable. And, if you want a $20 Amazon gift card, use my affiliate link to sign up! https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=11848193. At least one episode recordedAgain, I know this all might sound super basic, but you can't actually do the rest of what you need to do with your podcast host without a full episode recorded and uploaded. One episode is fine, but I'll challenge you to go even beyond that and record four episodes before you launch.Heck, if you really want to start a podcast with a bang, record eight episodes, release four all at the same time to kick off the party (this gets you more downloads and visibility on Apple Podcasts) and then release your next four each week following! It's all about planning!Once you've got your content plan sorted out, and the logistical and technical elements organized, you're good to go. Plan ahead, do a little bit of research, and remember that at the end of the day, everything can be edited and re-uploaded. Heck, you can even change the name of your podcast if you really want to! I've done it!---Sign up for the live training where I will be walking you through the essential steps to start your podcast: https://theultimatecreative.com/liveclassGet on the Podcast Rocket wait list: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketLaunch your podcast with Podcast Rocket! Heck, with all content generally!Recording with the wrong micI realize this sounds pretty basic but it's actually very common.Recording virtual interviews over Zoom. There is absolutely no reason to buy a nice mic if you're going to record your interviews on Zoom. Not balancing out the volume levels on multiple tracks. Everyone speaks at different volumes and it can make editing difficult.Pretending to be someone you're not. Quite possibly the worst podcasting mistake, pretending to be someone you're not is basically shooting yourself in the foot. Not testing your setup before you record. What's worse, fighting with your recording software for a few minutes or realizing that you've recorded everything on your computer mic instead of your fancy expensive mic that you spent money on specifically for this content? Not recording virtual interviews in more than one place. I always get bewildered looks when I tell people I record in at least 3 places when I'm doing guest interviews remotely. But I have used those backup recordings before, and I will use them againForgetting to hit record altogether. You're testing, you're anxious about a guest or you're feeling rushed for time - and then you click back to your recording software and realize you've totally forgotten to hit record. AAAHH!Recording in spaces with too much noise/Not enough soft surfaces. This is probably the least offensive of all the podcasting mistakes I'm covering here. Not asking people to rate, review and subscribe. It's not pushy or salesy, you're giving them free content!---Sign up for the live training where I will be walking you through the essential steps to start your podcast: https://theultimatecreative.com/liveclassGet on the Podcast Rocket wait list: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketLaunch your podcast with Podcast Rocket! Doors for that program open up next week on April 7, and I'll be doing a live info session that day too which I'd love to see you at. I'm going to be answering questions about Podcast Rocket, I've got a bonus for live attendees, and I'm going to walk you through the essential pieces you need to launch your podcast. Make sure you sign up for that here!Without further ado, here's the replay for Episode 28, What You Need To Know Before You Start A Podcast - which originally aired on September 29, 2020.---This week I'm sharing the top things I think you need to know before you start a podcast. Whether it's podcasting for your business or podcasting as a content creator, these are my essential “need-to-knows” to help you feel confident with your production.1. It's not just about the microphone.Sure, a great microphone is going to go a long way in producing a professional sounding podcast, but if you're not using it correctly, you may as well use your computer mic.2. Batching is your friend.Podcasting can be intimidating when you start thinking about how much of it you need to do each week to be consistent - but it doesn't need to be! Here's a sample monthly plan you can use:3. You don't need sponsors to be considered successful.Sponsorships aren't all they're cracked up to be. In fact, most sponsors require at least 1000 downloads per episode (some even require 5000) to be eligible. They only pay around $10/conversion, and at 1000 downloads per episode you can expect about a 1% conversion.4. If the tech is overwhelming and stupid, don't use it.Not all tech is for all people. At the end of the day, you're looking for an audio file (an MP3 at a minimum) to upload to the internet. It doesn't matter how you get there. Unless you use Zoom. Don't use Zoom to record. Please. I hate it so much.5. You can't “fix it in post,” at least not all of it!That “echoey” soundDistortion from audio input that's too loudRandom little bumps from accidentally touching the table your mic is sitting on - or touching the mic itselfCertain hum sounds that are in the same frequency range as your voiceScratchy or crinkling sounds that come from rubbing your headphone mic on your collar or on a necklace - those are there for life babee! It sucks! At the end of the day, your podcast needs to serve you, not the other way around. The best way to accomplish this is to plan in advance, and remember that you are the expert!---Sign up for the live training where I will be walking you through the essential steps to start your podcast: https://theultimatecreative.com/live-classGet on the Podcast Rocket waitlist: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketLaunch your podcast with Podcast Rocket! Rebecca was the first person to sign up for my course Podcast Rocket in May of 2020, and with a lot of hard work and creative brainstorming, she and her daughter Zara came up with a fun and engaging way to explore classical music, from a kid's perspective.Since launching the podcast they've had MEGA success, even being featured in The New York Times! It's the one year anniversary of Ultimate Podcast Marketing! WOOHOO! 52 episodes of content about podcasting for podcasters, I actually stuck it out for an entire year!A year ago, I ended a business and started a new one, which is The Ultimate Creative that you see now, where we are producing podcasts, teaching people, how to podcast and creating content for podcasters to help you launch and grow your amazing podcasts. Everything felt very uncertain at the time, but there was a feeling in my gut that I should keep going on this route with podcasting. And I was really looking forward to the opportunity to create something that I felt super passionate about. Everything in my body was saying, no, do not pass go. do not move forward. Stay where you are, stay in your lane girl. You don't need to do anything more than what you're doing. What you've got is fine. And yeah, you might be in tons of debt and yeah, you might not be very happy with what you're doing, but like, why would you try something new? Despite all these thoughts going through my head, I'm so glad that I carved out a full eight hour day to sit there and record four episodes, which are very shaky at best. Even though I didn't really know what the hell I was building a year ago, I did know that I was ready to finally step into the spotlight and be the face of my business, instead of a freelancer behind the scenes, building other people's dreams.I'm so excited to share with you all of the amazing results I've seen from having my podcast for a year now, tune in to hear how I:Grew my expertiseMoved through the ups and downsOrganically grew my email listWhat's coming next! Finally, I just want to say thank you to those who have been listening over the last year, following along, sharing your feedback and reviews on Apple Podcasts, sending me DMs asking questions, participating, I love it! You really have made me feel like the work I put into Ultimate Podcast Marketing is worth every second, and I'm so humbled that I've been able to help so many podcasters in the last year, and have such an incredible impact! So thank you again, and I hope you'll stick with me and my amazing team for the next year!Links:Podcast Rocket: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketPodcast Production: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcastingEpisode 1: https://theultimatecreative.com/how-to-start-something-new/Join the Podcast Rocket waitlist!https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketGet my mini course - How To Start A Podcast:https://theultimatecreative.com/startapodcastWork with me!Podcast Production: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcastingPodcast Strategy: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-coachingFollow me on Instagram at @the_ultimatecreative and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to Ultimate Podcast Marketing wherever you get your podcasts! https://ratethispodcast.com/ultimate
If you're planning to start a podcast and you're wondering how to structure a podcast, this episode of Ultimate Podcast Marketing is for you! I'm going to be sharing how to structure a podcast episode in 3 easy steps that will leave your listeners wanting more, every time!First, what is a podcast structure?Every podcast is made up of segments. Those segments are essentially the framework, or outline of your episodes. Not every episode will have the exact same framework each time, but there are a few key segments that you should absolutely include in every episode no matter what, and I will cover those in the episode.Step 1: Choose Your Podcast SegmentsThere are three basic podcast segments every episode should have, no matter what. An intro, the main content, and an outro. You could also include special segments, like rapid fire questions, or fun games that you play with your guests from time to time! Who knows, you could even add a random rant corner to your podcast!Step 2: Tell A StoryThe best content always tells a story. Even if you're creating content like this episode of Ultimate Podcast Marketing, there's an opportunity to weave storytelling into your episodes. In the main content of your episode, think of the structure starting with the "hook" or "tilt" followed by three heightening beats, a climax, and a resolution. Step 3: Always Close With A Call To ActionThe easiest and perhaps most important of all these steps - make sure every episode has a specific call to action for your listeners! This essential piece is what will turn listeners into loyal fans! Now that you know how to structure a podcast, what will you include?Send me an email at emily@theultimatecreative.com or a DM on Instagram @the_ultimatecreative, I'd love to hear about your interesting podcast segments and how you've incorporated them into your show!Links:AppSumo: https://appsumo.comBiq: https://biq.cloudEpisode 49: https://theultimatecreative.com/how-to-choose-a-podcast-formatEpisode 50: https://theultimatecreative.com/defining-your-podcast-nicheKids Q The Music: https://www.upperbeachesmusic.com/podcastEpisode 35: https://theultimatecreative.com/how-to-write-show-notesJoin the Podcast Rocket waitlist!https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketGet my mini course - How To Start A Podcast:https://theultimatecreative.com/startapodcastWork with me!Podcast Production: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcastingPodcast Strategy: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-coachingFollow me on Instagram at @the_ultimatecreative and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to Ultimate Podcast Marketing wherever you get your podcasts! https://ratethispodcast.com/ultimateLaunch your podcast with Podcast Rocket! Ever heard someone say, “my podcast is for anyone and everyone?” Well this episode of Ultimate Podcast Marketing is going to totally debunk that, and help you figure out how to define your podcast niche with the help of my amazing client Jessica Alex, host of the Boss Up Your Brand podcast!Jessica Alex is the founder of Jessica Alex Marketing, a boutique agency that is passionate about helping female entrepreneurs shine both on and offline. She helps her clients become clear on their brand message, and creates marketing strategies to propel their business to the next level by using her expertise in branding, content marketing and public relations. Jessica Alex works with her clients so that they can build their own community, build trust with their audience, and look their very best. What is it like to launch a podcast?Jessica shared some of the details about her recent podcast launch, and some of the challenges she was able to overcome. When it finally came time to get the podcast over the finish line, relying on her accountability buddies on Instagram was the key factor! How to define a podcast nicheJessica recommends to narrow your focus by starting with demographics, and then getting deeper into the lifestyle of your audience. So if your current audience is women, are they moms? Do they live in a house or a cabin? What kind of car do they drive, if they drive one at all? Then, she always recommends her clients look at what already exists. If you've been building an audience for a while now for a business, you may have a specific audience niche already - but you'll have to listen to find out more! Why do you need to define a podcast niche? At the end of the day, Jessica says that if you're trying to serve 20 million different people, you're probably just going to blend in with 20 million other people that are trying to do the same thing. By defining your podcast niche and understanding who your audience is, you can set yourself apart from the crowd and connect with the people that LOVE what you're podcasting about!Links:jessicaalexmarketing.com@jessicaalexmarketing@bossupyourbrandpodcastpodcast@jessicaalexmarketing.comJoin the Podcast Rocket waitlist!https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocketGet my mini course - How To Start A Podcast:https://theultimatecreative.com/startapodcastWork with me!Podcast Production: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcastingPodcast Strategy: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-coachingFollow me on Instagram at @the_ultimatecreative and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to Ultimate Podcast Marketing wherever you get your podcasts! https://ratethispodcast.com/ultimateBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! If you identify as an introvert and you really want to have your own podcast, this episode is for you! My guest Julie Greenham is the host of The Quiet Powerhouse Podcast, and she is an introverted entrepreneur and business/mindfulness coach who helps her listeners and clients discover how introversion can be a superpower, if you tune into it and allow it to guide you. You might be surprised to learn this, but I am also an introvert! I think the only reason I can have as much energy as I do on my podcast is because I spend so much time alone, not talking to anyone. Ever. EVER. Okay sometimes. But equally as surprising is that Julie feels most comfortable using her podcast as a way to connect with fellow introverted entrepreneurs, and create deep connections with her clients and listeners. The reason being that she can have one on one conversations that go deep - an introvert's dream scenario! Well, outside of having alone time to unwind!Julie's coaching practice grew out of a need to stop running a business the way she thought she should, instead of in a way that felt good. Julie says that often when entrepreneurs and creators get started, they look to the big names in their industries to follow their examples - but what works for them doesn't necessarily work for everyone. In addition to podcasting, Julie recommends having a strong email marketing strategy as well as some kick ass freebies to draw in new clients. And, if you listen to her podcast episode 28, “The Best Social Media Platforms for Introverts” you'll learn what my favourite new introverted marketing strategy is!And finally, Julie has prepared a super amazing freebie just for you today, based on her own podcast's guest prep guide that she shares with all of her guests. Julie has put together a guide for introverts that will be guesting on a podcast, so that they can prepare themselves and feel at ease, and comfortable during recording. This week on Ultimate Podcast Marketing I'm giving you five easy beginner podcast recording tips to make your audio sound awesome. The tech setup is overwhelming at first, but by following these simple steps you'll begin to feel comfortable with recording, which means more amazing podcast content! Remember, practice makes perfect, and it's truly a practice that will help you get better and better at recording your podcast as you go.I'm kicking off this episode with a letter from a listener who is just getting started with her podcast, then I will get even deeper into my 5 easy podcast recording tips for beginners!A letter from Stephanie Lear:Hey EmilySo I've totally gotten to the stage where I'm slightly panicking about committing myself to this podcast. I keep listening to episodes of your podcast which are very encouraging so thank you for that!!I recorded a first episode by myself and I just used the mic on my phone but when I went to edit the pieces all together I can definitely notice the differences in the sound throughout. That will be better when I have a mic but I wondered if you had any advice for me until I get a mic later this month. For these interviews I planned on using Zencaster. The editing wasn't easy either the first time around. By the time it was 'done' I was exhausted and it needed to be done.I'm hoping later next week I'll have 2-3 episodes complete so I can launch it.thanks!!Hey Stephanie!Wow 2-3 eps already? That's amazing! Congratulations!Generally with any mic you want to keep the environment and the delivery consistent. So if you're recording into your phone, keep it in one place with the mic facing you. Keep your own position the same throughout so that you have a consistent tonal quality. For interviews, make sure you have your headphones on, the mic in your headphones will be better than your computer mic. Bluetooth microphones aren't good though so stay wired where possible.Editing can be tough at first but you'll get the hang of it quickly, in the app you're using see if there's a quick key cheat sheet somewhere online to make the workflow faster.Good luck with your podcast! Here are my top 5 easy podcast recording tips for beginners:Write and practice key talking pointsRecord in a room with lot of soft fabrics, or pick up a mic shield to absorb some of the “echoey” sound.Look for the logo on your micRecord and listen to an audio testRecord short chunks and edit as you recordNow of course I'm going to get even more detailed about these tips in the episode, so make sure you subscribe to Ultimate Podcast Marketing wherever you listen to podcasts! But as a quick sneak peek, I just want to remind you that quality and polish will come over time, especially as you are starting a podcast and learning how everything works! Don‘t put too much pressure on yourself to get started, and when you need a refresh, just come back to this episode!Get my mini course - How To Start A Podcast:https://theultimatecreative.com/startapodcastWork with me!Podcast Production: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcastingPodcast Strategy: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-coachingFollow me on Instagram at @the_ultimatecreative and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to Ultimate Podcast Marketing wherever you get your podcasts! https://ratethispodcast.com/ultimate
If you are looking to move past the “newbie” podcaster phase and get through difficult podcasting challenges, this episode is for you. My guest (and coaching client) Wendy Wei and I talk about how she improved her interview skills, landed more high profile guests and most importantly - found her voice as the host of the Pexels Podcast, OverExposed. And let me tell you, this episode is literally just one inspirational soundbite after another!Wendy and I started working together a few months ago when she approached me to coach her for her podcast. She is a super researcher and learned that not only do I produce podcasts, but I'm also a performer and trained improviser/sketch comedian. Honestly it still blows my mind that she found me and sought out my mentorship! SO COOL!But that's Wendy. She's exactly the type of person to seek out the people who will help her achieve her goals without hesitation. She sees others doing what she wants to do, and then she takes action to make it happen. Wendy is a photographer who went to business school, and then landed an internship at Pexels. She loved it there so much, she decided to come up with a plan to make herself invaluable (again, inspiration party!). So she launched OverExposed, a podcast that interviews photographers to learn how they started and grew their businesses. In this episode Wendy and I talk about: Wendy's story and how she became a photographer and podcasterThe biggest challenges she faced her podcastHow we worked together to overcome those challengesThe one thing she wishes she had done sooner for her podcastWendy's method to land big name guestsHer biggest focus in our work together has been developing ways to land her dream interview guests, and improve her interview skills to create truly inspiring content. Don't worry, we break it down for you so you can do the same thing!Wendy's purpose? To inspire others to feel like they too can achieve all of their creative goals! On today's episode of Ultimate Podcast Marketing I want to focus on the marketing side of things, and I want to ask you - is your content reaching the right people? Are you actually getting clients and customers that are awesome? Or are you bringing in clients that don't quite fit? Maybe you're not bringing in clients or customers at all! Ahh! We're going to figure out who it is you want to attract and how to do it.Start by revisiting your own goals and purpose. What is it that you want to sell/earn revenue from? How do you want to impact planet earth with your content, products or services? By reconnecting with your big motivator, you can start to tap into a deeper level of who it is you're trying to reach - fun fact, their motivators are likely very similar to yours!Identify who it is you want to reachDo a little market researchGet direct with your messagingChoose your channelsDoes everything align with your values?Just remember that no one else cares about your business, your goals, your content, anything you do, as much as you do. They're all busy caring about their own things. And it's not selfish, it's just... we spend all our time with ourselves, of course we're looking out for number 1! And if you're not, please start, because again, no one else is going to care as much as you, so whatever you're doing MUST connect with you on a deep personal level. If you're a podcaster that wants to earn money from your podcast, you need to have a solid financial plan ready to go. If you're a business owner that has a podcast, you need to know how your podcast is supporting your business financially. How do you figure this out? With my wonderful pal and client Melissa Houston, the host of the Think Like A CFO podcast!Melissa Houston is the host of the Think Like A CFO Podcast which is a super-charged one-stop-shop resource for anything and everything related to business finances for women entrepreneurs. She's also my business finance coach, and seriously, I'm not lying when I say she SAVED my business from financial disaster... yet again. But more on that later. Melissa works with entrepreneurs to empower them with the essential financial knowledge they need to make important decisions in their businesses, to plan for various taxes and expenses throughout the year, and to come out the other side with zillions more dollars than they had before working with her. I know this, again, because she helped me do exactly this!I wanted to bring Melissa on today for a few reasons. One, as podcasters, we need to be aware of the costs of our podcasts so that we can measure the impact more accurately. Two, we need to be thinking long-term and strategically about what we talk about in our podcasts to give our incomes a boost - whether you use podcasting to market and promote your business or as its own income stream. And three, because I think Melissa can share some really great behind the scenes stories of personal development as a podcaster, and why hiring a coach (financial, podcast or otherwise) is generally a good idea to achieve your goals faster and with less devastating frustration. In this episode we cover:What led Melissa to this particular career as a financial coachThe value of hiring a coach to work through personal development, financial, business, podcasting or otherwiseMelissa's podcasting journeyEntrepreneurship being a lifelong commitment to personal developmentWhy coaches are essential for entrepreneursCreating your podcast content that reaches the people that you want to help in a meaningful wayIf you need a hand with your business finances, yes, even if you just have a Patreon and this is another revenue stream for you - you should be thinking about this stuff! A few months ago I was dabbling with the idea of helping other entrepreneurs and freelancers start their own podcast production business using the processes and systems I created over the last year. I even created a free guide for anyone interested in doing this! But life got in the way, and the program I was thinking about launching in the new year took a back seat when I realized that I wanted a little bit of a break for my brain. So today I want to take you through the guide, step by step to show you how you can start a podcast production business as well! You can download the guide here and follow along with this episode, but even without the guide this episode will be helpful to you. In fact this episode will be helpful for anyone with a service business that needs some ideas to organize and manage their finances and time effectively. My business, The Ultimate Creative, is structured for my ADHD brain. It is very rigorous and process oriented and foolproof. At the same time, I need to throw in some wild cards for myself (maybe like this program I was planning?) to keep things interesting. Before I switched to a podcast-only service model, I was serving clients reactively instead of proactively. I had no idea how much money I'd be bringing in each month, and the rollercoaster (both financially and emotionally) brought me to burnout a few times more than I'd like to admit. Now, I have a reliable source of monthly income, more time freedom than I've ever had in my life, and clients that I absolutely love!Over the last year I developed this business model with a lot of trial and error, so I want to share the steps I took to fast-track your success with podcast services. Why?Because I know that when you take action on what I'm going to share with you in this framework, you will see the same results I did, and trust me when I say that I truly want you to WIN.I'm in your corner pal, let's get started!Download the guide here: https://theultimatecreative.com/how-to-become-a-podcast-editor/Here's what we cover in the 5 part framework:Part One: Reverse Engineer Your SuccessPart Two: Tech Stack & ProcessesPart Three: Package, Price and OutsourcePart Four: Training ClientsPart Five: Add-on ContentWhat's next? Not to mention my amazing team, Valeska my Copy Chief and Laura my Editor - without them this would be completely impossible!I'm really happy that I'm able to provide entrepreneurs with the tools they need to confidently share their content and to do it in a way that allows them to grow their businesses. I hope get to continue to do this for years to come! I'm so grateful for all of the people that I've worked with over the last year that helped me get to this place. It's impossible to do this entrepreneur thing g alone, and we all need friends and mentors and coaches. The three coaches I mentioned in this episode are fabulous by the way if you need help in any of these areas.
