Any difficulty of understanding the meaning of these words will vanish, when the relative circumstances of the text here are considered: for Christ being at this time shortly to suffer death, signified to his apostles his human nature by these very words: for as God he could not die. And therefore as he was both God and man, it must follow that according to his humanity he was to die, which the apostles were soon to see and believe, as he expresses, ver. 29. And now I have told you before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe.

For some said: He is a good man. And others said: No, but he seduceth the people.Et murmur multum erat in turba de eo. Quidam enim dicebant : Quia bonus est. 18 Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.Christi autem generatio sic erat : cum esset desponsata mater ejus Maria Joseph, antequam convenirent inventa est in utero habens de Spiritu Sancto. 19 Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.Joseph autem vir ejus cum esset justus, et nollet eam traducere, voluit occulte dimittere eam. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.Haec autem eo cogitante, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis ei, dicens : Joseph, fili David, noli timere accipere Mariam conjugem tuam : quod enim in ea natum est, de Spiritu Sancto est. 21 And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.Pariet autem filium : et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum : ipse enim salvum faciet populum suum a peccatis eorum.[16] "The husband of Mary": The Evangelist gives us rather the pedigree of St. Joseph, than that of the blessed Virgin, to conform to the custom of the Hebrews, who in their genealogies took no notice of women; but as they were near akin, the pedigree of the one sheweth that of the other.
1 Then Jesus was led by the spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry. 3 And the tempter coming said to him: If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 Who answered and said: It is written, Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple, 6 And said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written: That he hath given his angels charge over thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said to him: It is written again: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again the devil took him up into a very high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, 9 And said to him: All these will I give thee, if falling down thou wilt adore me. 10 Then Jesus saith to him: Begone, Satan: for it is written, The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and him only shalt thou serve.[8] "shewed him": That is, pointed out to him where each kingdom lay; and set forth in words what was most glorious and admirable in each of them. Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.Et interrogaverunt eum : Quid ergo? Elias es tu? Et dixit : Non sum. Propheta es tu? Et respondit : Non. 22 They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?Dixerunt ergo ei : Quis es ut responsum demus his qui miserunt nos? quid dicis de teipso? 23 He said: I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.Ait : Ego vox clamantis in deserto : Dirigite viam Domini, sicut dixit Isaias propheta. 24 And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.Et qui missi fuerant, erant ex pharisaeis. 25 And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?Et interrogaverunt eum, et dixerunt ei : Quid ergo baptizas, si tu non es Christus, neque Elias, neque propheta? 26 John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.Respondit eis Joannes, dicens : Ego baptizo in aqua : medius autem vestrum stetit, quem vos nescitis. 27 The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.Ipse est qui post me venturus est, qui ante me factus est : cujus ego non sum dignus ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti. 28 These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.Haec in Bethania facta sunt trans Jordanem, ubi erat Joannes baptizans.

17 These things I command you, that you love one another.Haec mando vobis : ut diligatis invicem. 18 If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you.Si mundus vos odit, scitote quia me priorem vobis odio habuit. 19 If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.Si de mundo fuissetis, mundus quod suum erat diligeret : quia vero de mundo non estis, sed ego elegi vos de mundo, propterea odit vos mundus. 20 Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. Si me persecuti sunt, et vos persequentur; si sermonem meum servaverunt, et vestrum servabunt. 21 But all these things they will do to you for my name's sake: because they know not him who sent me.Sed haec omnia facient vobis propter nomen meum : quia nesciunt eum qui misit me. 22 If I had not come, and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.Si non venissem, et locutus fuissem eis, peccatum non haberent : nunc autem excusationem non habent de peccato suo. 23 He that hateth me, hateth my Father also.Qui me odit, et Patrem meum odit. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no other man hath done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.Si opera non fecissem in eis quae nemo alius fecit, peccatum non haberent : nunc autem et viderunt, et oderunt et me, et Patrem meum. 25 But that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law: They hated me without cause.Sed ut adimpleatur sermo, qui in lege eorum scriptus est : Quia odio habuerunt me gratis.The holy Apostles Simon, a Cananean, called Zelotes (the Zealot) and Jude Thaddeus, a brother of St James the Less, a cousin to Jesus, called Lebbeus (the Courageous), preached the Gospel, the first in Egypt, the second in Mesopotamia. They both suffered martyrdom in Persia in the fist century. St Jude wrote a short Epistle in which he exhorts the faithful to beware heretics.
31 Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.Nunc judicium est mundi : nunc princeps hujus mundi ejicietur foras. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.Et ego, si exaltatus fuero a terra, omnia traham ad meipsum. 33 (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)( Hoc autem dicebat, significans qua morte esset moriturus.) 34 The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?Respondit ei turba : Nos audivimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in aeternum : et quomodo tu dicis : Oportet exaltari Filium hominis? quis est iste Filius hominis? 35 Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth.Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Adhuc modicum, lumen in vobis est. Ambulate dum lucem habetis, ut non vos tenebrae comprehendant; et qui ambulant in tenebris, nescit quo vadat. 36 Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke; and he went away, and hid himself from them.Dum lucem habetis, credite in lucem, ut filii lucis sitis. Haec locutus est Jesus, et abiit et abscondit se ab eis.The Son of Man must be lifted up.
23 Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Si quis diligit me, sermonem meum servabit, et Pater meus diliget eum, et ad eum veniemus, et mansionem apud eum faciemus; 24 He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. 18 Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.Christi autem generatio sic erat : cum esset desponsata mater ejus Maria Joseph, antequam convenirent inventa est in utero habens de Spiritu Sancto. 19 Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.Joseph autem vir ejus cum esset justus, et nollet eam traducere, voluit occulte dimittere eam. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.Haec autem eo cogitante, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis ei, dicens : Joseph, fili David, noli timere accipere Mariam conjugem tuam : quod enim in ea natum est, de Spiritu Sancto est. 21 And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.Pariet autem filium : et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum : ipse enim salvum faciet populum suum a peccatis eorum.To be convinced how much the intercession of St Joseph prevails with Jesus Christ, we have only to consider these words of the Evangelist: And he was subject to them. The Son of God employed thirty years assiduously obeying Joseph and Mary! It was sufficient for Joseph by the least word or sign, to show that he wished Him to do anything; Jesus immediately obeyed. This humble obedience of Jesus teaches us that the dignity of Joseph is above that of all the other Saints, except that of the Queen of Saints. Let us hear what St Teresa says of the confidence which all should place in the protection of St Joseph: "To the other Saints," she says, "it appears that the Lord may have granted power to succour us on particular occasions; but to this Saint, as experience proves, He has granted power to help us on all occasions. Our Lord would teach us, that, as He was pleased to be subject to Joseph on earth, so He is now please to grant whatever this Saint asks for in heaven. Others whom I have recommended to have recourse to Joseph, have known this from experience. I never knew anyone who was particularly devout to him, that did not continually advance more and more in virtue. For the love of God, let him who believes not this make his own trial. And I do not know how anyone can think of the Queen of Angels, at the time when she laboured so much in the infancy and childhood of Jesus, and not return thanks to Joseph for the assistance which he rendered both to the Mother and to the Son." We should be particularly devout to Saint Joseph, that he may obtain for us a happy death.

And as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.Exiit qui seminat, seminare semen suum. Et dum seminat, aliud cecidit secus viam, et conculcatum est, et volucres caeli comederunt illud. 6 And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.Et aliud cecidit supra petrum : et natum aruit, quia non habebat humorem. 7 And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it, choked it.Et aliud cecidit inter spinas, et simul exortae spinae suffocaverunt illud. 8 And other some fell upon good ground; and being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam : et ortum fecit fructum centuplum. Haec dicens clamabat : Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat. 9 And his disciples asked him what this parable might be.Interrogabant autem eum discipuli ejus, quae esset haec parabola. 10 To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand.Quibus ipse dixit : Vobis datum est nosse mysterium regni Dei, ceteris autem in parabolis : ut videntes non videant, et audientes non intelligant. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.Est autem haec parabola : Semen est verbum Domini. 12 And they by the way side are they that hear; then the devil cometh, and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved.Qui autem secus viam, hi sunt qui audiunt : deinde venit diabolus, et tollit verbum de corde eorum, ne credentes salvi fiant. 13 Now they upon the rock, are they who when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots; for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation, they fall away.Nam qui supra petram, qui cum audierint, cum gaudio suscipiunt verbum : et hi radices non habent : qui ad tempus credunt, et in tempore tentationis recedunt. 14 And that which fell among thorns, are they who have heard, and going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit.Quod autem in spinas cecidit : hi sunt qui audierunt, et a sollicitudinibus, et divitiis, et voluptatibus vitae euntes, suffocantur, et non referunt fructum. 15 But that on the good ground, are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience.Quod autem in bonam terram : hi sunt qui in corde bono et optimo audientes verbum retinent, et fructum afferunt in patientia.
4 And when a very great multitude was gathered together, and hastened out of the cities unto him, he spoke by a similitude.Cum autem turba plurima convenirent, et de civitatibus properarent ad eum, dixit per similitudinem : 5 The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.Exiit qui seminat, seminare semen suum. Et dum seminat, aliud cecidit secus viam, et conculcatum est, et volucres caeli comederunt illud. 6 And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.Et aliud cecidit supra petrum : et natum aruit, quia non habebat humorem. 7 And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it, choked it.Et aliud cecidit inter spinas, et simul exortae spinae suffocaverunt illud. 8 And other some fell upon good ground; and being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam : et ortum fecit fructum centuplum. 1 And it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled.Factum est autem in diebus illis, exiit edictum a Caesare Augusto ut describeretur universus orbis. 2 This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria.Haec descriptio prima facta est a praeside Syriae Cyrino : 3 And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city.et ibant omnes ut profiterentur singuli in suam civitatem. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David,Ascendit autem et Joseph a Galilaea de civitate Nazareth in Judaeam, in civitatem David, quae vocatur Bethlehem : eo quod esset de domo et familia David, 5 To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.ut profiteretur cum Maria desponsata sibi uxore praegnante. 6 And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished, that she should be delivered.Factum est autem, cum essent ibi, impleti sunt dies ut pareret. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.Et peperit filium suum primogenitum, et pannis eum involvit, et reclinavit eum in praesepio : quia non erat eis locus in diversorio. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock.Et pastores erant in regione eadem vigilantes, et custodientes vigilias noctis super gregem suum. 9 And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them; and they feared with a great fear.Et ecce angelus Domini stetit juxta illos, et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos, et timuerunt timore magno. 10 And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people:Et dixit illis angelus : Nolite timere : ecce enim evangelizo vobis gaudium magnum, quod erit omni populo : 11 For, this day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.quia natus est vobis hodie Salvator, qui est Christus Dominus, in civitate David. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger.Et hoc vobis signum : invenietis infantem pannis involutum, et positum in praesepio. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God, and saying:Et subito facta est cum angelo multitudo militiae caelestis laudantium Deum, et dicentium : 14 Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will.Gloria in altissimis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis
18 Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.Christi autem generatio sic erat : cum esset desponsata mater ejus Maria Joseph, antequam convenirent inventa est in utero habens de Spiritu Sancto. 19 Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.Joseph autem vir ejus cum esset justus, et nollet eam traducere, voluit occulte dimittere eam. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.Haec autem eo cogitante, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis ei, dicens : Joseph, fili David, noli timere accipere Mariam conjugem tuam : quod enim in ea natum est, de Spiritu Sancto est. 21 And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. 19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou?Et hoc est testimonium Joannis, quando miserunt Judaei ab Jerosolymis sacerdotes et Levitas ad eum ut interrogarent eum : Tu quis es? 20 And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.Et confessus est, et non negavit, et confessus est : Quia non sum ego Christus. 21 And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.Et interrogaverunt eum : Quid ergo? Elias es tu? Et dixit : Non sum. Propheta es tu? Et respondit : Non. 22 They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?Dixerunt ergo ei : Quis es ut responsum demus his qui miserunt nos? quid dicis de teipso? 23 He said: I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.Ait : Ego vox clamantis in deserto : Dirigite viam Domini, sicut dixit Isaias propheta. 24 And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.Et qui missi fuerant, erant ex pharisaeis. 25 And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?Et interrogaverunt eum, et dixerunt ei : Quid ergo baptizas, si tu non es Christus, neque Elias, neque propheta? 26 John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.Respondit eis Joannes, dicens : Ego baptizo in aqua : medius autem vestrum stetit, quem vos nescitis. 27 The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.Ipse est qui post me venturus est, qui ante me factus est : cujus ego non sum dignus ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti. 28 These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.Haec in Bethania facta sunt trans Jordanem, ubi erat Joannes baptizans.
