In this episode, I chat with author Garry J. Shaw about his fascinating new book from Yale University Press, Cryptic: From Voynich to the Angel Diaries, the Story of the World's Mysterious Manuscripts. The book tells the stories behind nine puzzling medieval and early Modern European texts. In our interview Garry talks about the three that fall within the chronological confines of the Middle Ages. We begin with the "unknown language" and "unknown script" concocted by the remarkable twelfth-century German abbess, mystic, polymath, and composer of sacred music, Hildegard of Bingen. We then turn to another strange early fifteenth-century manuscript, the Bellicorum instrumentorum liber, Book of the Instruments of War, by Giovanni Fontana, whom Garry Shaw characterizes as "a true pre-Renaissance man." Fontana was entranced with the "natural magic of mechanical creations" and the "practical knowledge gained from experiments and observation of nature." But this did nothing to lessen his belief in supernatural forces operating in the world. He was also "a world class prankster" with a fascination for ciphers. All these came together in the Bellicorum instrumentorum liber, an enciphered illustrated catalogue of imagined machines, ranging from rocket-powered chairs and fanciful siege engines to mechanical witches. We conclude with perhaps the most famous of all mysterious manuscripts, the early fifteenth-century Voynich codex, whose content has resisted decipherment by professional code-breakers and cryptographers. (Spoiler: we won't be able to tell you what the Voynich manuscript actually says, but Dr. Shaw has a good idea what the manuscript is, why it was produced, and why no one has been able to decipher it. Dragged forth from the solitude he loved, he was made Supreme Pontiff; he resigned the papacy in order to continue his hermit life. He died A.D. 1296.

His pontificate was one of the most glorious. He enforced obedience to the decrees of the Council of Trent and revised the Missal and the Breviary. He died A.D. 1572.

St Marcellus I defended the rights of the Church with heroic resistance. On this account he was exiled by the heritical Maxentius. He died A.D. 310.

He condemned Arianism, commanded St Jerome to translate the Holy Scriptures into Latin, and composed inscriptons for the sepulchres of the Roman martyrs. He died A.D. 384.

St Clement I, was a companion and disciple of Ss Peter and Paul, and the third successor of St Peter. He was exiled by the Emperor Trajan and cast into the sea A.D. 100.

St Martin I suffered much persecution in his defence of the Catholic Faith against the Monothelite emperors of Constantinople. He was exiled and died in A.D. 655.

St Callixtus I, successor of St Zephyrinus, instituted the Ember-Day Fasts, and provided for the honourable interment of the Martyrs. He himself suffered martyrdom under Alexander Serverus A.D. 223.

The successor of St Peter in the Apostolic See ruled the Church for about nine years. He was martyred, and was buried next to the Prince of the Apostles, A.D. 78.

"Comrades and Fellow Travelers" Among all the documents of the Council, it was the schema on religious liberty which led to the most acrimonious Let us take up where we left off. Christian common sense is offended in every way by this new religion. Catholics are exposed to desacralization on all sides; everything has been changed. They are told that all religions bring salvation; the Church welcomes without distinction separated Christians and in fact all believers, whether they bow to Buddha or to Krishna. They are told that clergy and laity are equal members of the “People of God,” so that lay people designated for particular functions take over the clergy's tasks. We see them conducting funerals and taking Viaticum to the sick, while the clergy take up the functions of the laity—dress like them, work in factories, join trade unions and engage in politics. The new Canon Law supports all this. It confers unheard-of prerogatives on the laity, blurring the distinction between them and priests and creating so-called “rights.” Lay theologians hold chairs of theology in Catholic universities, the faithful take over roles in divine worship which were once reserved to those in clerical orders: they administer some of the sacraments, they distribute Holy Communion and serve as witnesses at weddings.We also read that the Church of God “subsists” in the Catholic Church—a suspicious formula, because immemorial doctrine has always said that the Church of God is the Catholic Church. If we accept this recent formula, it would seem that Protestant and Orthodox communions form equal parts of the Church—which cannot be, since they have separated themselves from the one Church founded by Jesus Christ: Credo in UNAM sanctam Ecclesiam. Un santo del genere è chiaro che crei molto più di un fastidio, in quanto ostacolo all'attività del Maligno che vuole abbattere la Chiesa. Ecco perché oggi c'è chi ne abbatte le statue...«I Barbari sono tornati. E vogliono distruggere la civiltà cristiana»: mons. Reig Pla, vescovo di Alcalá de Henares, in Spagna, così ha commentato, a giugno, in un'omelia, la notizia dell'abbattimento della statua di san Junipero Serra a San Francisco, statua finita nel mirino del movimento Black lives matter, la cui agenda è ovviamente anti-cattolica: «Vogliono togliere l'immagine di Isabella la Cattolica dal Campidoglio di Washington, vogliono abbattere la statua di fra Junipero Serra. Non possiamo semplicemente imputare il fatto ad ignoranza. È possibile che chi abbia compiuto materialmente queste cose sia ignorante, ma, dietro l'ignorante, ci sono i veri barbari che vogliono porre fine alla civiltà cristiana». Ma chi fu questo grande Santo, fondatore di 9 delle 21 missioni spagnole in California e per quale motivo suscita tanto odio tra i «barbari», tanto da volerlo abbattere e "cancellare" dalla Storia?Conosciuto come "l'Apostolo della California", nacque a Maiorca nel 1713. Appena diciottenne, si fece francescano, decidendo di assumere il nome di Junipero (frate Ginepro), per ricordare uno dei compagni più vicini e fedeli a san Francesco d'Assisi. Abbandonò l'insegnamento universitario per quella che sarebbe stata, per tutta la sua vita, la sua vocazione: la missione. Il 28 giugno 1749, insieme ad altri venti frati, salpò dal porto di Cádiz verso il Messico, arrivando alla città di Veracruz il 7 dicembre. Mentre gli altri viaggiavano a dorso dei muli, per recarsi a Città del Messico, san Junipero camminava: si ferì così ad una gamba, una ferita che lo avrebbe tormentato per tutta la vita. La prima destinazione furono le missioni in Sierra Gorda, abitate da tribù di indigeni. In breve tempo, san Junipero superò il primo ostacolo, che lo separava dalle popolazioni locali, ovvero la lingua; una volta appresa, grazie all'aiuto di un governatore indigeno, tradusse orazioni e nozioni della dottrina cristiana.VINCERE PIÙ ANIME PER DIOOltre alla predicazione del Vangelo, diffuse il modello della civiltà occidentale: «Vincere più anime per Dio» era il motto dei missionari, segno di un'infaticabile zelo apostolico per la salvezza delle anime, perché «Salus extra Ecclesiam non est». San Junipero si preoccupò non solo delle necessità spirituali degli indios, ma anche di quelle materiali, tant'è che li introdusse al commercio, alla tessitura ed all'agricoltura. Poco a poco, la loro vita andò migliorando. Costruì a Jalpan de Serra una chiesa in stile barocco, dedicata a san Giacomo, che fu presa a modello per la realizzazione di altre quattro chiese nelle sue missioni. Restò in Sierra Gorda fino al 1767: quell'anno i gesuiti furono espulsi dai possedimenti spagnoli e le missioni della Bassa California (Stato messicano al confine) furono affidate ai francescani. Padre Junipero venne eletto Superiore ed insieme ad altri 14 compagni giunse in zona il primo aprile 1768. Dopo soli due anni, fondò la missione di San Diego.Spostatosi verso l'Alta California, fondò le missioni di San Carlos de Monterey (trasferita poi sulle sponde del fiume Carmel); di Sant'Antonio, il 14 luglio 1771; di San Gabriel (oggi inserita nella grande città di Los Angeles), l'8 settembre 1771; di San Luis Obispo, il primo settembre 1772. Il primo agosto 1776 fondò la missione di San Francisco, il primo novembre quella di San Juan Capistrano ed il 7 gennaio 1777 quella di Santa Clara. Papa Clemente XIV gli concesse per dieci anni il privilegio di amministrare il Sacramento della Cresima; al termine di tale periodo, il numero dei cresimati di tutte le missioni da lui visitate fu di 5.309. Nel 1782 fondò l'ultima missione, quella di San Bonaventura, più nota come Ventura, poi si ritirò al Carmelo di Monterey (nella contea omonima, in California) e lì morì il 28 agosto 1784, con il conforto dei Sacramenti. In 17 anni, dal 1767 al 1784, nella sola California, padre Junipero percorse 9.900 chilometri e 5.400 miglia di navigazione, sopportando, nonostante l'infermità al piede, le condizioni disagiate di lunghi viaggi in mare e via terra.ACCUSE INFONDATESan Junipero fronteggiò burocrati e comandanti militari, combatté gli abusi ed i potenti per proteggere gli indios della California. Quando morì all'età di 71 anni, fu pianto come un padre dalle stesse popolazioni che aveva convertito, perché nessuno prima di lui aveva fatto tanto per loro. Nonostante tutto il bene compiuto, sulla figura del santo francescano circola una "leggenda nera", che ha portato non solo all'abbattimento della sua statua a San Francisco, ma anche alla deturpazione del suo monumento a Palma di Maiorca, con la scritta in rosso «razzista». "Colpevole" dunque di cosa? È stato accusato di aver ridotto in schiavitù le popolazioni degli indios e di aver rubato le loro terre. I detrattori dimostrano di non conoscere affatto la figura del santo ed i loro sconsiderati atti sono il frutto di manovre molto più ampie, proprie di chi vorrebbe cancellare la civiltà cristiana.Uno straordinario missionario che percorse più di 9.000 chilometri e che cresimò più di 5.000 indios, che si mise a costruire, mattoni alla mano, la chiesa di Santiago de Jalpan, lo stesso che con instancabile zelo missionario predicò in tutta la California che solo convertendosi a Cristo e vivendo il Vangelo si sarebbe avuta la salvezza eterna; un santo del genere è chiaro che crei molto più di un fastidio. Diventa un ostacolo «all'attività del Maligno che vuole abbattere la Chiesa», come ebbe a dire mons. Cordileone prima di compiere un esorcismo nel luogo in cui fu abbattuta la statua del santo. L'arcivescovo di Los Angeles, mons. Jose Gomez, in un'omelia ha elogiato san Junipero: «Il ricordo di san Junípero e dei primi missionari cambia il modo in cui ricordiamo la nostra storia nazionale. Ci ricorda che i primi inizi dell'America non sono stati politici. I primi inizi dell'America sono stati spirituali».Ecco il motivo di questi atti sacrileghi e di questi attacchi alla civiltà cristiana ed alla nostra fede, che mai però potranno mettere in ombra la grandezza di san Junipero. Infatti, tutta la civiltà impiantata nel Nuovo Mondo deriva dalla Chiesa di Gesù Cristo e dal Papato Romano. Chi ha in odio il Vangelo ed i cosiddetti "barbari" potranno abbattere o deturpare statue, ma mai potranno cancellare la realtà della bellezza e della grandezza della civiltà cristiana, che, con l'evangelizzazione dei popoli ad opera di missionari instancabili come san Junipero, ha dato la salvezza eterna a numerose anime.Nota di BastaBugie: San Junipero Serra è considerato il padre degli indios, fu da allora onorato come un eroe nazionale. Nell'inverno tra il 1934 e il 1935, quattro cattolici americani di Seattle decisero di dar vita a una organizzazione di laici che favorisse, mediante assidui contatti e opportuni approfondimenti, la conoscenza del cattolicesimo e la sua diffusione nella società moderna. Dopo breve tempo, l'associazione ebbe un indirizzo più preciso, ossia la promozione e il sostegno alle vocazioni sacerdotali; come patrono venne scelto padre Junipero, per la sua azione missionaria. The liturgical season of Easter celebrates the mystery of the risen Lord. For 40 days, before ascending into Heaven, Christ manifested himself to His disciples in the reality of his glorified body and thus ended the work that he had carried out for years in their imperfect souls. He taught them, he strengthened them, he accompanied them in their initial sadness and led them to faith in the great event of the Resurrection. As the first reading reminded us, they would be brave witnesses before the world of this great event, extending to peoples of all times and places, the conviction that it was impossible for Jesus to be held in the throes of death. That is to say, that Christ is alive and is the purpose and the meaning of the life of every man, of every person. The Gospel this Sunday transports us, once again, to one of the many roads of Judea; the road that began in Jerusalem, the Holy City, and reached the now lost village of Emmaus. This week, at the daily Masses, we have spoken of the enormous grace of being able to visit the same places in which the events that we read in Holy Scripture took place. Well, I have walked this path of which the Word of God speaks this Sunday. I walked it on April 2nd two years ago on Monday of Easter Week. More than 22 miles that ended in the ruins of a 4th-century Byzantine church that according to the testimony of Saint Jerome, rose above the house of Cleopas, one of the two disciples in today's account. There, just as it happened then, my journey ended at sunset, with the day ending with the risen Lord at the Eucharistic table and in the breaking of bread. We have not heard a fairy tale, dear brothers and sisters. This story really happened, its protagonists were flesh and blood people like us. In fact, the story of "the disciples of Emmaus" continues unceasingly in the life of the Church. Along the paths of history, the risen Christ has always walked with his apostles. He has accompanied us, especially in the most difficult moments. He has explained the Scriptures to us and he has broken the bread for us. Likewise, the page we have heard is a wonderful description of what Holy Mass is in its two fundamental parts: the Liturgy of the Word, in which Christ himself speaks to us; and the Liturgy of the Eucharist in which the risen Lord, at the altar table in the person of the priest, blesses the bread and gives it to his brothers and sisters as food for our hope. Perhaps that is the central teaching of our Gospel today: the relationship between the Eucharist and the risen Christ. The Lord is not far from us. The gaze of his Heart continually watches over his friends. Jesus is close to those who suffer and are weary and he enters our homes when we invite him in. My soul aches thinking of all of you who in these days cannot sit at the table of the Risen One and eat the living Bread of the Eucharist. We are all like those two men who left Jerusalem defeated by sadness and despair. Like you, they were also disappointed men: "We waited” - they confess to the mysterious wayfarer who comes their way – “we hoped that Jesus was going to liberate Israel but ... but ... the one we trusted ... has been buried for 3 days." Yes, these disciples are an image of the Church in the current circumstances. Many disciples also leave the Apostles today because they are equally disappointed. Their hearts have filled with doubts, with darkness, even with anger. The Church of today is too similar to the disciples hidden in the Upper Room, with the doors closed for fear of the Jews. (Jn 20:19) The bishops and priests have also locked the doors of their churches and we do not know how long this situation will continue. And, faced with the attitude of some shepherds who withdraw, who shut themselves away, these two men, and many more with them in these days, decide to move away. After all, who wants to belong to a group of fearful and cowardly men? Dear brothers and sisters, today the risen Christ comes to seek you, wherever you are. The Good Shepherd does not remain where he is, but goes out onto the road and pursues us until he finds us. What a beautiful image this is of Jesus talking to these two hopeless men! He asks them, as if he did not know, to give them the opportunity to reveal what they are feeling and thinking, and listens to them lovingly and patiently. “Tell me everything - the Lord would be thinking. It is good for you to show it to me. To heal your wound, the infection must first come out of your injured, bitter and sad hearts.” Jesus listens, and those men vent to the stranger. They need to share what they have, perhaps with tears in their eyes. I sincerely want to thank all of you who in recent weeks have made me a participant in your suffering, your disappointment, your pain. I appreciate your trust. You must know that hidden in me it was Jesus who was listening to you, who was walking with you in these days of trial. You couldn't leave that frustration inside, eating away at all your joy and hope. And I, this morning, after having read or listened to all of you, I want to imitate the Lord and take the Word of God to give you the answer that you need to hear. If Jesus explained everything that referred to him in the Scriptures that morning, I am going to use the readings of this Sunday to alleviate your pain with his answers. First of all, I tell you along with Saint Peter that we are strong in the test if we put our trust only in the Lord. We, humans, are fragile - we know that well. Our brothers are wrong, as we are, and therefore, we cannot put our hope in them. The second reading said: "Your faith and hope are in God." (1 Pt 1:21) If we are disappointed by what is happening, it is probably because we are still too immature in the faith. This is what Saint John of the Cross writes, “It is not God's will that a soul be disturbed by anything or suffer trials, for if one suffers trials in the adversities of the world it is because of a weakness in virtue. The perfect soul rejoices in what afflicts the imperfect one.” Secondly, I say to you: "Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer in order to enter into his glory?" Jesus reproaches these two men, calling them "foolish and slow of heart" for not knowing how to see the events of history from a supernatural perspective. In the mysterious plan of God, the suffering of the righteous is often the beginning of a change that brings about a better state of affairs. The Lord may lose battles, but he will never lose the war. Therefore, despair is always a poor response - it will never be a Christian attitude - because we have already been told the end of the story, and the story ends well! Therefore, we cannot lose heart when we are tested. Thirdly, I thought that you who listen to me from home are like these disciples before arriving at the village of Emmaus. You cannot sit at the table because you are still on the path, walking towards the Eucharist. This walk must increase your hunger for the Eucharistic bread. Perhaps that is why the risen Lord made them get exhausted during a long day of walking in the sun. On my pilgrimage through the Holy Land, I remember that the journey to Emmaus was undoubtedly one of the most exhausting of the entire trip. In my dog-eared Moleskin notebook where I jotted down the memories of each day at the end of the day, I wrote two observations: "My heels are crushed." and "I'm aching all over." Perhaps, with this experience, the Lord wants you to feel more hunger for Him so that the next time you receive Him after the weariness of this long and painful road that you are traveling, your hearts will devour Holy Communion with more love, with more faith, and with more desire for holiness. Fourth, "Did not our hearts burn within us as he spoke to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" It is true that, until the doors of the churches are opened to you again, dear brothers and sisters, many of you do not have access to the bread of the Eucharist. But there is something that you do have with you. You have his Word and his presence! They have put a lock on the door of the churches but "the Word of God is not chained." (2 Tim 2:9) Your heart can burn like the hearts of those men if you let Christ speak to you and you listen to him. His word is fire. His presence is the cause of joy, his closeness, the remedy for our ills. I understand your suffering very well but think about what you have and you will prepare yourself better to receive what, at the moment, you cannot have. Christ accompanies you with his Spirit, enlightens you with his Word, he is with you every step of the way, and he wants to lift your spirits because "the table is set, the bread is warm and the wine is aged," and if you do not falter, you will soon arrive at your destination. Finally, the Emmaus account ends as follows: "So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them …” These two men return to the Church family. They had drifted away, their heads down, and they returned with burning souls, light steps and hearts overflowing with light and joy. There is no better way to end this page of Scripture. Dear brothers and sisters, we must return to Jerusalem. We must return to the assembly of the Apostles. We have to love the Church very much, yes, even though it is made up of men full of limitations, fears, and mediocrity. But aren't we like that too? The risen Christ is present in his Body, which is the Church. He knows better than anyone the defects of his disciples, but he wants us to help each other, to support each other, to give each other hope and, so to wait for his final return. The maxim of St. Cyprian will always be true: extra Ecclesiam, nulla salus. Outside of the Church, there is no salvation. Allow me, then, to gather without further ado, all the teachings of this Sunday into a prayer to end today's homily: Lord of the paths of history, look at your troubled people and come to the aid of those who love you. Light our hearts with the fire of your Spirit and walk with us in this time of tribulation. May the weariness of these endless days come to a close with the return of all your children to the altar table and that once there, we will all recognize you in the breaking of bread. Lift our hearts and help us to feel joy in listening to your Word, in the warmth of your company, in a life always lived at your side. And just as you suffered to enter your glory, we may see in the sufferings of this hour the purification that we have to go through to achieve union with you in Paradise. Do not let any of those who have distanced themselves from you and your family, the Church, get lost along paths of sadness and loneliness. Grant that they may make their way back and return to the Upper Room, with Mary and the other Apostles, where, all together, as brothers of the same Father, we can delight in the joy of reunion and in your risen presence, bread broken for the salvation of the world.

The Sacraments The Catholic Church makes no bones about it when it declares that it is the vehicle through which salvation comes to the world. The Latin phrase “extra Ecclesiam nulla sallus” well sums up Rome’s position which being interpreted means “outside the Church there is no salvation”. In this teaching we ask the question, by what means does salvation come through the Church? To answer this, we turn to what is called the sacraments! There are seven sacraments which the Roman Catholic Church hold to. These sacraments are rituals or ceremonies that the Catholic Church maintain Christ instituted and entrusted to the true Church of Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church defines that these seven sacraments are not outward symbols conveying the reality of an inward reality but rather that these visible rituals (ceremonies) carry actual power, to impart divine life and saving grace to those who are the recipients of them in true faith.
