The right mix of protein, carbs, fat, and hydration is one of the biggest keys to a runner's training, speed, and recovery. Eating the right mix of foods is essential for anyone who wants to take their running to the next level. limit any processed foods and start with lots of whole foods instead. Processed foods are those with lengthy ingredient lists, and most of those ingredients come from a lab, not nature. Matt Frazier is a vegan ultramarathoner, author, and entrepreneur, best known as the founder of the No Meat Athlete movement and host of the No Meat Athlete Radio podcast. Matt found he could run longer and faster with the help of a plant-based diet, and shortly after adopting a plant-based diet, Matt qualified for the Boston Marathon after taking over 100 minutes off his first marathon time. He has run several 50-milers and a 100-mile ultramarathon on a vegan diet. Matt's books have sold over 125,000 copies in five languages, and his work have been featured in books including Rich Roll's Finding Ultra, Brendan Brazier's Thrive Foods, and Seth Godin's What to Do When It's Your Turn. Matt was named by Greatist as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness, and Sports Illustrated has called The No Meat Athlete Cookbook one of the best Health & Wellness books. Matt has a brand new book out called the Plant Based Athlete and I couldn't leave out his equally amazing co-author Robert Cheeke. Robert began a vegan lifestyle for ethical reasons at age 15, weighing just 120 pounds. Today he is the author of the best-selling books, Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness, Shred It!, Plant-Based Muscle. He is often referred to as the “Godfather of Vegan Bodybuilding,” growing the industry from infancy in 2002, to where it is today. As a two-time natural bodybuilding champion, Robert is considered one of VegNews magazine's Most Influential Vegan Athletes. He tours around the world sharing his story of transformation from a skinny farm kid to champion vegan bodybuilder. Robert is the founder and president of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness and maintains the popular website, VeganBodybuilding.com. He is a regular contributor to No Meat Athlete, Forks Over Knives, and Vegan Strong. In my conversation with Robert and Matt, we talk about common nutrition myths about plant-based and vegan diets (here's a hint--they are not always the same) and how more and more top athletes around the world are discovering that plant-based nutrition is not simply some fad diet, but a powerful performance and recovery enhancer. We talk about protein, calories, macros, and whether or not you need to be all in to reap the benefits of plants. As you can probably guess, this was a delightful conversation for me because not only did I get a chance to interact with two people whose work I think so highly of, but I also get to talk about my two most favorite subjects: running and food.
Can you be plant-based and an elite athlete? Matt Frazier says absolutely yes. Matt, a vegan ultra marathoner, author, and entrepreneur is a plant-based diet advocate, but he also knows it's not for everyone. Founder of No Meat Athlete, Matt is all about providing the tools for thriving on a plant-based diet and how athletes can be at their very best with this type of nutrition. Matt is known for his No Meat Athlete Radio podcast and his books, which have sold over 125,000 copies in five languages. His work has also been featured in books by Rich Roll's Finding Ultra, Brendan Brazier's Thrive Foods, and Seth Godin's What to Do When It's Your Turn. In addition, Sports Illustrated called The No Meat Athlete Cookbook one of the best Health & Wellness books. Now he's back with a new book The Plant Based Athlete, written in collaboration with Robert Cheeke. This book guides those interested in making the important shift to a plant-based diet in how to do so with the best, most transformative results. In this week's episode, I catch up with Matt on the creation of the No Meat Athlete, a deep dive into what you need to know about protein and carbs and how not to worry about what people think. And check out my conversation about The Plant-Based Athlete with Robert Cheeke.

Napoleon Hill's QQMA Formula (quality quantity plus mental attitude) states this: "The quality of service you render plus the quantity of service your render plus the mental attitude in which you render service determines the space you occupy in your chosen calling and the compensation you get from your services." If you want great nutritional advice, … ha this is not the place…. I would recommend you go to Scott Jurek, buy one if his books, all vegan… and hey he knows his stuff, won the Spartahlon 3 consecutives times he won the western states… or Brendan Brazier another famous Vegan triathlete… always go to the experts who have a proven track record…. If you want to learn how many kilometres, miles, months, weeks and times you need to train to run the Comrades Marathon, I would recommend you talk to Coach Perry, Official Comrades Marathon Coach. Side note… If you haven't heard of the Comrades marathon… ok you should go to my YouTube channel where I posted a long and no not boring video, but it lacks fancy animations … its not cool but if you watch it, listen to it you will know enough to say, hmm this 89KM race in my home country south Africa… is something that deserves to be on your bucket list. Now.. who should listen? Well those of you… who want, or to put it differently…. if you want practical usable advice you know something that will fit you as a runner definitely closer to 40 than 30…. who still needs to pay bills, take care of family kids. Then you have come to the right place… it is here on this show where we talk about everything related to mental attitudes, how to get clear focus, how to build mental endurance. As it says, helping you become a better stronger and smarter runner, it all starts in your brain. You need to get that thought that idea into a clear picture that's what gets you out of the front door. Or the lack thereof is what keeps you on that sofa… with your two best friends perhaps, Ben and Jerry. However, if you are struggling with the basics, you know the little issues… perhaps the discipline to run regularly, or train with more diligence. Perhaps your running is same old same old… your route is the same, your pace… not really progressing… And now you think… how do I overcome this gap. Its obviously something inside of me… I mean you want to become a better stronger and smarter Runner, don't you? Well then…. then you have come to the right spot because this podcast, this whole concept…the message is crystal clear. Here we focus on techniques that enable you to overcome the limits you might have set yourself. To show you, yes, it is possible to overcome limiting beliefs, and yes, there is more to matters of the mind than “I am always positive”. No, you are not, and secondly that statement right there will ensure you come crushing down like a ton of bricks when you realize, it's not all positive. Nothing grows or progresses in the positive, take rain and sunshine, takes challenges, uphill and downhills to progress… and at each stage of your live a different level. So, lets get back to QQMA…. Do you want to be ordinary? NO way… definitely not. I mean seriously who wants to be ordinary. Creature of habit… ? Well then you should not do the same run routine every day. Avoid running the same distance. You need to start doing things differently. With a focus on… and here it comes… the actual usable tools I mentioned earlier… quality quantity and a mental attitude that ensures you do more

Today we’ve got a two-for-one special. Our guests are Mark McTavish and Brendan Brazier. Together the two of them are revolutionizing the American cider industry by sitting back and letting Mother Nature do its thing. While that might seem a bit simplistic, they realized that there’s no need to add any extra sugar, water, or substances to their cider. They literally juice the apples and let them sit for 3 months before canning them and selling them. That’s it! That’s their process! And let me tell you from my own taste test: I’m a big fan. Mark says that anyone can do this at home, but I’m going to keep letting them do the work so that I can enjoy the fruits of their labor. Listen in as we cover everything from how Mark was inspired by the day-drinking culture in Northern Spain, how many apples you have to juice to get one serving of cider, and why the wine industry has lobbied to make it illegal to put ingredients on anything over 7% alcohol.
Brendan Brazier is a pioneer when it comes to plant-based sports nutrition. A professional Ironman-turned-serial-entrepreneur, Brendan discovered the connection between plant-based eating and optimum performance as a teenager in the 90's. In the decades since, he has shown the world what plants can do. Brendan has authored several books under his Thrive brand, launched one of the most recognized vegan sports nutrition companies (Vega), backed dozens of other innovative vegan efforts (such as Beyond Meat), and recently co-founded a zero sugar, probiotic cider (Pulp Culture). His work has educated the masses, and we are honored to have him as a guest. From essential nutrition to stress management and overall self-improvement, listen in to learn from this legend. What we discuss in this episode: - The Thrive book series - Brendan’s famous Blender Drink (the beginning of Vega) - Holistic approach to health and performance - How to manage stress—both physical and psychological - Brendan’s involvement in Beyond Meat - The Game Changers documentary - Pulp Culture ciders Connect with Switch4Good - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/ - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/ - Twitter - https://twitter.com/Switch4GoodOrg - Website - https://switch4good.org/
In recent years, few trends have impacted the landscape of food and beverage as significantly as that of plant-centric diets. Things were certainly different in 2004, when there were just a handful of brands that focused on and promoted plant-based products. One of those was Vega, an ahead-of-its time brand of protein powders made with vegetable-based ingredients. Brendan Brazier, an endurance athlete and expert in plant-based nutrition, co-founded Vega and was the original formulator of its products. Amid a surge in plant-focused eating habits, Vega became one of the leading brands in the fast-growing business of nutritional powders and bars, and in 2015 the company was acquired by Whitewave Foods for $550 million. Last year, Brazier rekindled his entrepreneurial spirit as the co-founder of Pulp Culture, a first-of-its-kind brand of fermented cold-pressed juices anchored in the emerging business of “better-for-you booze.” In an interview included in this episode, Brazier spoke about the roots of his passion for plant-based foods and how it culminated in Vega, why the brand’s heavy investment in consumer education paid off, the reason he launched Pulp Culture despite avoiding alcohol for 14 years, how he’s drawing upon lessons from building Vega to support the brand’s development and his perspective on the evolution of plant-based foods. Show notes: 0:43: Brendan Brazier, Co-Founder, Vega & Pulp Culture -- Brazier sat down with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif for a conversation that explored his background as a professional endurance athlete and why he incorporated plant-based nutrition into his training regimen. He also explained why a flavorful and good tasting product was not an initial focus of Vega, why the company embraced the saying “ignorance is our only competition,” and why private equity firm VMG was the right partner for its first round of outside capital. Later, he discussed the creation of Pulp Culture and how he assessed the opportunity for a better-for-you alcoholic beverage, why he implores entrepreneurs to find a co-founder and what he views as the keys to a successful plant-based food brand. Brands in this episode: Vega, Pulp Culture
Brendan Brazier went from pro triathlete to founding the uber successful Vega brand, known for their high-quality plant-based sports nutrition products. Hear about his newest venture, Pulp Culture, a line of cold-pressed wild-fermented juices. It’s all about healthy options, working hard and playing hard – Not deprivation but “Excessive Moderation” as Tom calls it. For Brendan Brazier, Pulp Culture all started with a question: Why are there so many health-obsessed people who are absolutely unwilling to compromise on what they eat, yet so ready to compromise when it comes to alcohol? Why don’t we hold alcohol to the same high standards as food? The answer, he realized, was that Pulp Culture didn’t exist yet. Brendan is a former pro triathlete and a two-time Canadian 50km ultra marathon champion. He’s also the founder of the hugely successful Vega Protein Powder line, which he successfully sold to Danone. And of course, he was one of those people who are so adamant about healthy eating, yet constantly forced to compromise when it came to having the occasional beer or cocktail with friends. His latest venture, Pulp Culture, solves this dilemma by taking 100% raw, fresh juice and allowing it to naturally ferment over three months through a process called “wild fermentation.” That means that there are no starters like yeast or sugar. All the fermentation comes from naturally occurring ambient bacteria. The result is a zero-additive, zero-sugar alcoholic beverage with 6 billion naturally-occurring probiotics, and B vitamins. In other words, an adult beverage that’s actually good for you. In this interview, Brendan breaks down how he built the Vega brand, the parallels between building a business and rising in the sport of triathlon, the philosophy behind his successful Thrive book series, and why he’s so excited about the opportunity that lies ahead for Pulp Culture.

Brendan Brazier and Mark McTavish are the game changers of alcohol. The two entrepreneurs are pioneering new growth in a market of drinks steeped in wellness and nutritional benefits. Through a vegan mindset and ethical stance, they’re sharing the benefits of alcoholic elixirs, whether it’s probiotics or the zero sugar, to prove there’s new way of drinking for everyone. Watch the full episode on YouTube Brendan Brazier is a vegan triathlete and entrepreneur. After discovering nutritional ways to combat his own health conditions, Brendan started Vega – a plant-based drink to aid performance, with protein, essential fats, fibre, greens and more. Brendan was also an executive producer for the plant-based Netflix film, The Game Changers, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron, Jackie Chan and countless others passionate about diet and nutrition. Mark McTavish is the president of 101 Cider House, a devoted cider fan and a lover of artistic beverages. With a juxtaposed background in fitness and the Canadian craft beer industry, Mark moved to south California to combine his passions in a fermented fruit drink that brings the enjoyment of alcohol with the benefits of probiotics and craft cider. Mark McTavish discovered the simplest way to make an alcoholic beverage, inspired by the organic sidras of northern Spain. 101 ciders contain zero residual sugar and no carbs, just 100% fresh pressed juice, full of naturally occurring yeasts and bacteria that ferment the base cider. To that, the team adds fresh fruits and herbs for flavor, and then everything is conditioned in the bottle (or keg). It’s also probiotic, gluten free and vegan friendly! Now Mark has teamed up with Brendan to promote the benefits of healthy eating, healthy drinking and a mindset that means you can achieve anything. Episode highlights - Discover the new cold pressed juice that’s been fermented – a healthy alcoholic drink with uplifting effects. Benefits include no dehydration, improved digestion and intestinal flora, and even nootropic qualities. How to go about the gritty world of brand building, creating a product and getting it out there. Why many athletes believe that a plant-based diet will help with everything from getting rid of inflammation, improving digestion, increasing strength and feeling better overall. The difference between veganism, a plant-based diet, being a vegetarian and other nutritional trends or marketing terms. How a lot of the opinions surrounding dietary decisions are based upon commercialisation of a food system that doesn’t work. Why fear and laziness are the biggest contributors to not making better decisions with anything in life. How common ground can be destroyed by labels and naming conventions, and why division is not going to benefit anyone in regards to progressive nutrition choices. Why sprouted and fermented foods are so healthy for you, and can help with a multitude of gastronomic issues or conditions. Why a change in your diet will unlock the nuances of flavour after your tastebuds become recalibrated. How multi-layered distribution channels, price influences and margins are not currently conducive to a system that gives consumers healthy products when it comes to alcohol. In one of our very first Notes, we took a quick look at Brendan Brazier’s The Thrive Diet. I read the book when it came out nearly a dozen years ago. Loved it. Then Brendan and I met at an event, became friends, etc. If you’re looking for ideas on how to be a high-performance plant-based athlete/human, I think you’ll enjoy Brenden and his work. He’s a former professional endurance athlete and the formulator (and cofounder) of the Vega nutrition brand. Today we’re going to chat about one of my favorite Ideas from his book. It popped into my head during the Q&A with our Coaches after our session on Sleep as we discussed having curfews on our caffeine while remembering the fact that when we routinely get less than 6 or 7 hours of sleep we DOUBLE (!) our risk for cancer. First, here’s the wisdom from Brendan: “I consider coffee drinking an uncomplementary stress. I view it as a form of credit, similar to shopping with a credit card. You get energy now that you don’t actually have, but you pay for it later—when the ‘bill,’ or fatigue, hits. (Simply drinking more coffee to put off the inevitable is like paying off one credit card with another: It will catch up with you sooner or later.) You’ll most likely pay a high interest rate as well, needing more time to recover than if that energy had not been borrowed in the first place. This is the beginning of a vicious cycle.” Let’s call that “Borrowed Energy.” Now, let’s connect that to the Matthew Walker gem we keep on talking about: “Two thirds of adults throughout all developed nations fail to obtain the recommended eight hours of nightly sleep. I doubt you’re surprised by this fact, but you may be surprised by the consequences. Routinely sleeping less than six or seven hours a night demolishes your immune system, more than doubling your risk of cancer.” So… You know what MOST of those two-thirds of adults who aren’t getting enough sleep do to make up for the fatigue they almost certainly feel most days? They (of course) BORROW ENERGY. In the form of caffeine via coffee, sodas, tea, etc. And/or sugar, etc. Now… It would be GREAT if we actually had a running tab on all the energy we’ve borrowed. Some super simple energy budgeting App like Mint for Energy. One glance and we can see how much more energy we borrowed Today and how high our interest rates are, etc. Unfortunately (and this is TRULY unfortunate), we don’t. Instead, we go on borrowing more and more and more energy. Day in and day out. Week in and week out. Month in and month out. Year in and year out. Decade in and decade out. And then… We don’t just continue to feel fatigue… Instead… We double our risk of getting cancer and make ourselves unnecessarily vulnerable to all the other chronic illnesses we don’t want. And… WHAM! Our debt is due. And we run a vey high risk of paying a VERY steep price in the form of one of those dreaded chronic diseases that are currently plaguing our modern society. Let’s remember that the vast majority of chronic diseases could be prevented with a few simple (fundamental!) lifestyle changes. I repeat myself (yet again): One of the biggest levers we can pull? Get a good night of sleep. Stop borrowing so much Energy. Pay down your Energy debt. Start building your Energy wealth portfolio. Today. (How will you +1 it, my Energized friend?!)

Improve Your Health With 3 Simple Spices "I realized that I needed to make a shift right away because the mom that I wanted to be was not the mom that I was that day with no energy, back pain, and feeling lethargic. I knew that my kids were going to need more energy from me." - Nagina Abudllah on why she decided to change her life around. In this episode, I had an awesome conversation with the mind behind Masala Body, Nagina Abdullah. We talked all about her health transformation as a busy mom and holding down a full-time career. How did she do it? By first focusing on following a nutritious diet and then hitting the gym to add strength training to her schedule. The biggest takeaway that I took from our interview was the fact that spice can have such a positive impact on our overall health. We talked about three spices that I'm sure are already stored in your kitchen cabinet: Cinnamon Turmeric Cumin Since she began her own health fitness journey, Nagina has seen drastic results and is now sharing her success with the world. Through Masala Body, she's helping busy, ambitious women from all over to lose weight through the power of spices as well as meal planning. At the beginning of this episode, Devon and I also shared some of our favorite foods and recipes for pre-workout and workout to give you an extra boost. Bonus Gift from Nagina!!! To all of our Open Sky Fitness Podcast listeners, she's providing us with a Sweet Spice Cheat Sheet and a Recipe E-Book with 7 Spicy Recipes to Spice Off 7 Pounds! Weight Loss Hacks with Simple Spices "Spices ease the process for eating healthy, losing weight, or gaining muscle. It just makes it easier." - Nagina Abdullah Cinnamon - The Sweet Spice With cinnamon, you can cheat your way to skinny with this sweet spice. According to Nagina, cinnamon is great for morning or afternoon slumps to give you some stabilized energy and reduce your blood sugar. Add 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon to smoothies or sprinkle some on top of coffee or tea. You don't need a ton to experience its full effect. Turmeric - The ancient, wonder spice Not only has turmeric been around forever, but it's also a great weight loss hack. You can reduce inflammation in the body by just adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon throughout the day to give yourself the full benefits. It's good to mix with black pepper because it dramatically increases the absorption of turmeric in the body by 2,000% and even more. Consume it after a post workout because your muscles are sore and you need to relax your muscles. You can add it to eggs, smoothies, and protein shakes. Cumin - Burn 3x as much fat Cumin has been proven to help burn up to three times as much body weight in a person's circumference. Better yet, cumin is tasty in so many different recipes. You can added it to any fish or meat dish to give it a great smoky taste. Nagin's favorite mix is combining cumin with sea salt, an pepper for a barbecue rub. Add some cayenne pepper for more spice. Cumin is also great to try in: Hummus Guacamole Egg salad Skinny Spice #1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJzVm3t790I Nagina's Meal Prep Hacks Nagina's number one hack is to simplify your batch cooking. You don't have to eat the same thing every day. Mix and match between several different options. 1 - Save Sunday for dishes that take a lot of time Use Sunday or whichever free day you have to make the dish that takes the longest amount of time. However, make sometime that's also easy like 1-3 different side dishes such as a nutritious carb or something with protein. Great side dishes can be: Lentils Beans Quinoa Eggplant Brussel sprouts Asparagus Mushrooms Roast the veggies in the oven with cumin, salt, pepper, and even cayenne if you wish. Use a slow cooker so that you can enjoy your day even more while the machine does all the work for you. 2 - Store Your Food in Glass Containers Ditch the plastic and always store your meal prep foods in glass containers. That way your food will stay fresh for longer amounts of time. 3 - Cook easy protein during the week If you want, marinate your protein meat (chicken, fish, pork, beef) on a Sunday so that you can cook it on a Monday. Bake, saute, roast etc. all you want. This way, you don't have to do all of your cooking on Sunday and you can break up the process. Join The Open Sky Fitness Podcast Group! That's right! Aaron Stuber and Jackson Long are the irreverent, hilarious, and extremely fit duo behind the Thought For Food Podcast and nascent publishing empire. Aaron is a cardiovascular nurse, and a long-time competitive climber. When he first started dating his vegetarian girlfriend, he initially dismissed that diet as "the dumbest thing I've ever heard of." Then he began to feel the effects of adding more plants to his diet, checked out the science, and was hooked. Jackson is a competitive road cyclist who has competed at the national and international levels. During one particularly grueling training season, he followed his coaches' paleo advice and ditched the carbs - and started feeling terrible. He also turned to research, found Forks Over Knives, Rich Roll, and Brendan Brazier, and turned his health and his fitness around in short order.

Working long hours away from his family as a physical education teacher while carrying an extra 10 to 15 lbs on his body, pounding upwards of eight cups of coffee a day to feel energized and training for an Ironman left Matt Korsky feeling exhausted. His daily grind was getting the best of him and as injuries showed up in his body he started to feel depressed. Needless to say, he never made it to the starting line of that Ironman. It was during this time that Matt experienced a life-transformative moment which set him on an entirely new trajectory in life. It was just after taking the life of a fish he had caught for dinner that Matt felt the weight of what he had done. It was then that he realized he never wanted to kill again in order to fill his plate. This was the beginning of Matt’s plant-based journey. Historically a person who is always up for something new, his wife was not surprised when he came home and told her that he was going vegan. He already had a head start because the school where he worked served vegetarian lunch. It was February 2013 when Matt went vegan and his wife followed just a few months later while pregnant with their second child. Within weeks Matt felt a huge difference in his health. Diagnosed with ADD as a child he noticed a major difference in his cognitive clarity and for the first time in his life, he felt like he was in charge of his decisions. He effortlessly kicked his coffee habit and restarted his active life by signing up for Ironman Maryland. He sought out all of the rites of passage books for a plant-based athlete, Rich Roll’s Finding Ultra, Brendan Brazier’s Thrive and T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study. He spent time educating himself on the plant-power lifestyle and knew that he had to share this message of health with others. He felt a huge change in his ability to bang out big workouts and recover quickly. Matt’s transition away from his full-time teaching job took patience and education. Although his circumstances at work became even more challenging he stayed with it until he was fully ready to make the leap. To gain more confidence and vision he attended Victoria Moran’s Main Street Vegan Academy. He also became a certified yoga instructor as a means to bring in immediate income while he was building his vegan coaching business. Matt’s story is such a perfect example of divine guidance and living at the hands of the universal schedule maker. He is thriving in his new life creation. He is fit, happy and excited to say that everything in his life is growing, including his family. Plant-powered baby no. 3 is on its way this spring! He is guiding people to living a more conscious and health-full life through his Plant-Powered Coaching business, his yoga classes and his work at the Ethical Choices Program where Matt finds himself back in the school system educating teens on the impact of food choices. There is no wasted effort on the path to finding our purpose. Matt can look back and see the perfect sequence of events that led him to where he is today. He gives some great tips and permissions on how to create your purposeful life. We dive into so many topics during our conversation today so you’re just going to have to buckle in to get the full monty with our guest Matt Korsky.

I caught up with Brendan Brazier, former professional Ironman triathlete, two-time Canadian 50km ultramarathon champion, bestselling author of Thrive and formulator of Vega, an award-winning line of whole food nutritional products. But what makes Brendan Brazier so unique is that he follows a 100% plant-based diet and has quickly become the most sought after authority for athletic peak performance around the world. In our short conversation we talked about the most common mistakes newbies make when switching to a plant-based diet. What the meat and dairy industry can teach us about marketing. Why patience goes a long way, especially when doing something new. What to consider when launching your own wholefood nutritional supplement company. Why becoming an education company as well as a product company is key to success and of course, what's Brandan's favourite desert. Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail Listener Brad asks: 24 to 72 hours after a hard full body Crossfit workout accompanying my muscle soreness and stiffness, the swollen feeling, will be a 2 to 6 pound weight gain. When the soreness subsides my weight returns back to normal. What is the cause of this weight gain? Is it normal or healthy? Listener Michael asks: I was wondering why I don't see or hear about the serious/successful athletes using TI swimming. Do you know why most seem to just do the standard freestyle stroke and steer away from TI? Do most not know about it, or do they just feel freestyle is good enough. Andrewheeps asks via Twitter: hey ben, any tips for good recipes if cooking for just more than one? Listener Allison asks: I am a sports/deep tissue and myofascial release practitioner. I wanted to ask you two questions: 1) I have a client who is an insulin dependent type 1 Diabetic, training for her first marathon. She struggles with lots of superficial myofascial adhesions, despite using the foam roller religiously and having a session with me every 2-3 weeks. Do you have any suggestions on how to help her body? Would the amino acids you mention help her? Also, as far as fueling for training and races, she has a lot of trouble, and thinks that will be her make/break as to whether she is able to get through the training. She's done her 1/2, but it's uphill form here. 2) Since I have lots of running and cycling under my belt, I often think of trying a tri ;) However, each time I go to the pool to try and swim some laps, I suffer from vertigo/nausea. I have horrible motion sickness on dry land anyway, and often get sick on boats, long car rides, etc... Can you think of anything I can do to help? (Ginger doesn't work and it's impossible to work out on Dramamine/Scop patches) Listener Kai asks: Recently Consumer Reports published findings of high levels of lead and other metals in protein drinks and other supplements (including some green drinks). 1. What is your take on this / how significant is this risk from your perspective? 2. Are there any “certifications” we should look for on supplement labels that provide guidance as to the quality of the ingredients / lab testing? 3. What is your take on consumerlab.com? In my response, I talk about and (5% discount code BGF). DougLloyd asks via Twitter: Feel unmotivated to restart lifting & running prgrm. Trainer might help. What should I look for in a personal trainer? In my response to Doug, I mention my team of personal trainers at . Listener Gabe asks: I recently have had interest in the Bioletics tests and protocols that you talk about. I have a limited budget, so I'd like to start with just the Vitamin D test. Do you think the Vitamin D test is the best place to start with Bioletics? How do I download Podcast episode #53 and #62 (I think) or any other episodes with Dr. Cohen? Your iTunes page only goes to Podcasts in the #70s, and I can't see how to download episodes from your website. I use iTunes with my iPhone 4, if that matters. In my response to Gabe, I direct him to Listener Jason asks: I am a cyclist, and last week I was in a crash during a race, resulting in a broken collar bone. My doc says it will be about 4 to 6 weeks until this has healed. I'm wondering if my nutrition over the next several weeks can help or hinder bone healing. Are there certain foods or supplements I should be including in my diet (sufficient calcium for example)? What would you do for a broken bone? In my response to Jason, I direct him to , along with my book, "How To Recover Like Wolverine from X-Men", which you can get Listener Zach asks: I'm a 35-year-old former marathoner that has decided to become serious about bike road racing...I realize I need to drop some weight to realize my full potential.I have a theory that I need to gain some muscle in order to lean out, and then I can worry about cannibalizing some of that muscle when it comes time to get into racing shape. I want to be in good functional shape in general, dropping muscle weight only when necessary to race. Should I focus for the next several months on building muscle in order to have that muscle help to burn fat stores, along with reducing fat through a healthy diet, and once my body fat percentage approaches a more ideal level, then worry about reducing muscle mass for racing? I'm never going to be the next Eddy Merckx, but I'd like to do well, and eventually maybe upgrade to Cat 3 or even 2. How would you go about this? Listener Todd asks: I am a male 45 year ol d and 245lbs. I was wondering if 1500 calories a day is a good goal. I dont want it to be too little and slow down my metabolism to much? I do cardio at least 5 days a week, and if the machines are accurate I am averaging about 700 calories burned each day, as well as weight training three days a week. I believe that the mix of calories are what they should be. I just have a worry in the back of my mind that the calorie intake will put my body into starvation mode, especially with the huge calories that I used to consume daily. Listener Toni asks: Just a quick question for podcast....have you ever used Sportlegs if so what are your thoughts about it. Listener Brad asks: Several months ago I watched a Dr. Oz interview where he told Jimmy Kimmel that your maximum healthy waist size should be half your height. Is this true? I am 74 inches tall and my waist is 35 inches, measuring two fingers above the belly button. Is my waist size healthy in relation to my height? Listener Bernice asks: I am curious to know, what is more than likely to make you fatter. Consuming excess fat or sugar/ carbs? I always thought the best foods to avoid when trying to loose excess body fat, is to reduce your fat intake. As the body would prefer to store fat over sugar/ carbs because it takes less calories to do so. In my response to Bernice, I mention my podcast: "". Listener Karen asks: I would love to hear your opinion about the C-Prime bracelet. I am seeing more and more of these and hearing so many claim that this bracelet has made the biggest difference in their running, biking, and swimming; even golf. Sounds too good to be true. What is your opinion? Listener Rich asks: I have seen advertisements for a bar called the pr bar in Competitor Magazine. I called and the Pres. of the company answered and told me how his nutrition program would get my body burning fat for energy. Your thoughts? Have you heard of this bar? I could not find any nutritional information about it. Listener Fernanda (from Ecuador) asks: I wanted to ask u if u could give some tips as to what to bring a picnic for maximum four people. just food that gives u energy to run all around the place. also im not sure bringing much fruit will help cause it is easiy digested and then we,ll be in the query for a near bathroom. and one last thing - another tip on activities like hit the ball ? please dont say hunting or fishing. Listener Brian asks: I will be doing Syracuse IM70.3 in Sept and have a question on long distance downhill running after a heavy uphill bike course. The Syracuse bike course contains alot of climbing some 2900 foot change in elevation. Then after what I'm sure will be a tough ride the run course is all downhill for 13 miles! Can you offer up any tips on form, position, or training for either the bike and the run that will allow the quads and gluts to survive this back to back test. Listener Tonya has a call in question about hiking at altitude and training hiking muscles. Do you have a question for Ben? Former pro-Ironman and author of The Thrive Energy Cookbook, Brendan Brazier; ultra-marathoner Matt Frazier, author No Meat Athlete; and veteran raw foodist and actor, Joel Brody.
A few weeks ago, my friend Yuri Elkaim (pictured above) published a book. Yuri is a bit of an outlier and renegade in the nutrition and health community. His mission is to empower everyday men and women with proper nutrition and health wisdom so they can take better control of their own health. He also holds High Honors degree in Physical Education and Health/Kinesiology from the University of Toronto, is a former professional soccer player, and for 7 seasons acted as the strength & conditioning/nutrition coach for the nationally ranked men's soccer program at the University of Toronto. Some refer to him as the "health whisperer" for being to get to the heart of what matters and produce amazing health, weight loss, and fitness results where there seemed little hope. I interview Yuri in today's podcast, and in this episode, we talk about protein digestibility, enzyme exhaustion, why most juicing recipes are no good, and much more. I must admit, Yuri's new book "" is not the kind of book I would not normally read. After all, Yuri - despite being an ex-professional soccer player - is bigtime into juicing, cleanses, detoxing - and I guarantee the guy eats far, far less steak than me... ...so I would *almost* classify him as a Whole Foods hippie. But his book is, frankly, brilliant. It covers dietary concepts that I haven't ever seen discussed in a book - concepts like: -adjusting your blood pH with the foods you eat... -how to test your adrenals without expensive lab tests... -which foods literally exhaust your digestive enzymes... -a new thing called the "PRAL" load of specific meals... -six myths about plant protein -how to choose the best kinds of coconut oil and butter... -and much more. I learned a ton from this book, and Yuri is a fellow athlete, a father, and a very smart dude, so I'm happy to tell you about his new book. Better yet, if you , you get the following ten bonuses (easily worth way more than what you pay for the book of course)... 1. The All-Day Energy Diet Community Cookbook ($29 value) Features 67 energizing, gluten/sugar/soy/dairy-free recipes that takel ess than 15 minutes to make from some of the industry's leading experts and a few of our very own customers (including two recipes by yours truly). 2. 8 Energy-Boosting Desserts ($19 value) These yummy and healthy desserts will finally allow you to have your cake and eat it too, without the dangers of sugar, dairy, or gluten. 3. Food Labels Made Easy ($39 value) Chances are you will still have some packaged foods from time to time. This walkthrough video and workbook shows you how to understand those tricky food labels so you don’t get taken for a ride. 4. The All-Day Energy Diet Grocery Guide ($19 value) Get the complete list and quantities of foods you’ll need for The All-Day Energy Diet. 5. The All-Day Energy Diet Kitchen Makeover ($49 value) Watch Yuri show you around the kitchen and see what you should and should not include your “energized” fridge and pantry. 6. The Bodyweight Energy Workout ($29 value) Burn fat and get energized with this simple 20-minute follow-along bodyweight workout with Yuri. 7. Yoga for Energy ($29 value) 15-minute yoga routine to relax and rejuvenate your body. 8. The "Energy Sessions" audio series ($199 value) Features 5 audio interviews with Dr. Alan Christianson (endocrine), Mitchell Stevko (sleep), Ben Greenfield (fitness), Dr. Isaac Jones (cellular health), and Brendan Brazier (alkalinity). 9. 1-Hour "Getting Started" Group Coaching Call With Yuri ($99 value) 10. Lifetime Access To Yuri's Private Facebook "Social Support" Group (priceless) If you have questions, comments or feedback about the with all the bonuses listed above, and leave your thoughts or questions at !

Why studies have associated NSAIDS with thromboembolic phenomena such as "heart attacks",kidney damage, and GI bleeds accounting for around 16,500 deaths each year... How NSAIDS actually impede cartilage repair and can cause cartilage loss... What about for athletes who are sore, or who want to be able to run while sore... would it be OK for them? After an injury, should an individual take a NSAID? If NSAID's are not advised, what are alternatives, and how do they work? During our interview, Dr. Roby Mitchell, mentions that one alternative for pain from inflammation is Phenocane. Phenocane is a natural anti-inflammatory and COX2 inhibitor that relieves pain and eliminates inflammation without inhibiting COX1 development like aspirin does or causing many of the liver and stomach problems that ibuprofen and Advil do. In other words, it prevents the production of an enzyme which is bad for you without inhibiting the growth of one that is good for you. COX2 enzymes have long been thought to be one of the causes of cancer in the body and they are known to help sustain PGE1 (Prostaglandin) which is the secretion that causes inflammation and the pain that results from it. COX2 is an enzyme that protects the lining of the digestive tract and bloodstream. Phenocane is a safe and popular alternative to pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories, giving you all of the benefits without the harmful side effects. Click here to try Phenocane now, and use code "NATURAL" for free shipping to the US. ---------------------------------------- Special Announcements: 1. Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com. Listener Tina asks: "I'm training for my second Ironman. The run holds the most challenge for me with my lack of experience and GI issues. I plan to use the Galloway method. My question is, what distance length vs.. walk time should I use. Presently I've been training with run 1 mile / walk 2 minutes. Is that reasonable? Should I always train the same distance vs. time on my long runs or should I change it?" Listener Autumn asks: "My partner and I are considering doing the hcg diet. We have a great naturopath here in Oregon who will work with us. However, she does not work with athletes very often, and we had a few fitness related questions. We will be doing Reach the Beach (a century ride) on May 15th. We are both very active, exercise regularly and eat very healthy foods. This will be the third time we've done the ride. We are worried about being able to train for it while doing hcg, and wonder if we should wait till after the ride to start the hcg protocol. Also, how much exercise is ok to do while on the protocol?" Listener Corey asks, "I have a question regarding general nutrition, i am male, 36 and train for olympic distance triathlon around 15hrs per week, i don't eat fast food or heavily processed food and eat meat rarely, lots of beans and lentils hardly any vegetables, i eat a lot of bread (4x loaves a week) and cereal, i choose grain bread and a wheat based cereal with skim milk, i will have a protein shake with flaxseed oil daily and snack on pistachios and fruit, i always have lots of energy, sleep well and have no health issues and keep very low body fat percentages without trying and can lean down to my race weight in a week easily,my question is should i try and cut down carbohydrate intake and eat more veges and meat even though i have always eaten this way and doesn't seem to give me any problems and as mentioned energy levels, sleep etc are great." Listener Amy asks: "I am fairly new to Triathlons and I am looking to make a wetsuit purchase. Do you recommend specific brands? I recently tried on an Aquaman Cell Gold wetsuit that boasts of the #40 neoprene throughout the entire suit. It is a higher priced wetsuit and I wanted to know if you felt it would be a good purchase. Being new to the sport, I am not sure if it really matters if I have a top of the line suit and if it would make that much of a difference in my swim time." Listener Bret asks: "What exactly would you suggest using to fuel during my IM. I have been training with PowerGels, Perpetuem and ShotBloks. I noticed that your 2007 IM Kona, you used Perpetuem but then in 2008 you didn't…what changed? Also, the PowerGels by Powerbar have added sodium in them with the idea that you don't have to take salt tabs…do I need more sodium than is in a PowerGel?" Listener Casey asks: "I just read your article in Triathlete magazine on nutrition. Good stuff! I have heard a few times now that Omega 6 oils are a culprit for inflammation. I often take the Udo's oil 3-6-9 blend. I was wondering if the anti-inflammation properties of the 6 are somehow counteracted with the omega 3s. Would I be better off simply taking a straight up flax oil or the like instead? Incidentally Udo's 3-6-9 blend was also advertised in the same publication as your article. Thanks in advance for the assistance. " During my response, I recommend Casey listens to Podcast #86... Listener Deb asks: "I know very little about bike power meters - except that they are ridiculously expensive. I've also recently heard of a power meter called an iBike - which is supposed to be very accurate and affordable. Because I know so little about power based training though, I'd love your opinion on the subject as well as your thoughts on the various products out there including the iBike." Lorenzo asks: "I was just talking to a buddy of mine that is an Ironman Triathlete and he suggested that I find a shoe that allows me to not wear any socks, what do you think?" Listener Katharine asks: "I have a question about dates. During half-marathons, I have eaten organic dates with tremendous results in energy and endurance. I am training for my first ironman, and would love to use dates as a main source of food for the race, and they seem ideal to me - delicious, high in natural sugar, etc. However, my coach is worried about their fiber content leading to gastric issues. I am wondering what your thoughts are on this, and if you have any advice on the topic. Also, do you advise eating sweet potatoes, etc., on the bike in some way? If so, how would you go about that? (I totally never thought of doing that!)" Listener Cindy asks: "I have been trying to your Holistic Fueling plan. My problem is that I have extreme evening hunger. I have always been a big carb eater and my dinners would always be protein (chicken, fish or tofu), with a portion of veg (usually only 1/2 cup) and either rice, pasta or potatoes. Then I would have fruit about 1 hour later and sometimes a few crackers. Now for dinner I have protein (fish chicken or tofu) and lots of veg and/or salad. I just never seem to get full without the carbs. Tonight I had a good size piece of grilled salmon, about 1 cup of asparagus and a large salad (lettuce, cucumbers and carrots). One hour later, my stomach is growling and I feel like I haven't eaten a thing. I feel like I ate enough food through out the day: 6am - 1/2 cup applesauce and green tea followed by a 40 minute hard swim 7:30 - protein smoothie (vegan protein powder, 1 cup fruit and almond milk) and 1 egg 9:00 - 1 sprouted grain toast with peanut butter and coffee 12:00 - 1 sprouted grain toast with slice of turkey and cheese, carrots and celery with pb, 1/2 cup watermelon 3:00 - 1 apple, handful of almonds 6:00 - grilled salmon, 1 cup asparagus, large salad 7:30 - absolutely starving!!!!! I drink water throughout the day, take 1 acidopholus tablet in the morning on an empty stomach, 1 calcium and 1 magnesium and a fish oil supplement in the morning and at supper time. Is my body just in carb withdrawal? It's been about 2 weeks since I cut back on the evening carbs. I do feel better and have been sleeping better but I hate this evening hunger." In my response to Cindy, I recommend Mt. Capra Double Bonded Whey Protein or LivingProtein as two late night snack options... Congratulations to Cindy, who was nominated as the top question for this week's podcast! Cindy will receive a free month of membership to the Body Transformation Club, full access to the Club's secret video page, the life-changing piece of Club mail that I will personally send him each week, and much more. What books do you recommend for either training or just a day at the beach, and how do you choose which books to read?" During my answer to Paul, I mention the following books, which you can "surf" below: Run Faster from 5K to Marathon, The New Psycho-Cybernetics, How to Win Friends & Influence People, The Runner's Edge, Get The Edge by Tony Robbins, Tribes: We Need You To Lead Us, The Magic of Thinking Big, The Go Giver, Getting Things Done, Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money In addition to the books below, I'm also smack-dab in the middle of "The Thrive Diet" by Brendan Brazier and recently finished "50/50 : Secrets from 50 Marathons in 50 Days" by Dean Karnazes and "Chi Running: A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-Free Running" by Danny Dreyer. We are psyched to have a chance to talk to vegan triathlete Brendan Brazier. The radio station equipment goes a little haywire and we lose Brendan early on, which gives Jilian a chance to give us a lesson on iron absorption. Once we get Brendon back we talk about his Thrive diet, the vegan sports nutrition company he founded called Vega, his take on protein, and how to fuel the body on a plant based diet.
Our 60th show features a vegan who obviously gets enough protein, vegan bodybuilder Robert Cheeke. Robert tells us about his path to veganism and how he uses the vegan diet to reach his workout goals. He also talks about his friend and fellow vegan athlete Brendan Brazier, his website for vegan athletes VeganBodybuilding.com, and more.In the News: Cholesterol and Memory, Spain Bestows Rights to Great Apes
