As consumers become increasingly aware of the animal agriculture industry's cruelty and environmental devastation, clever industry marketers are adapting with alternative “humane” and “sustainable” labeling and marketing campaigns. In the absence of accurate information, it has never been more important to educate consumers on the realities behind the industry lies, and people are hungry for the truth. The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy, and Ethical Eggs (Lantern Publishing & Media, 2023) features a range of engaging and thought-provoking essays from eighteen notable experts who are at the forefront of this marketing and societal shift, chronicling every aspect with in-depth analyses and intellectual rigor. Among other timely topics, the book explores how the humane hoax intersects with feminism and environmentalism, how it is represented in the media, and the affects it has on human and non-human communities alike. The Humane Hoax will leave the reader questioning everything that they have been conditioned to believe as consumers. Hope Bohanec has been active in animal protection and environmental activism for thirty years and has published the book The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat? Episode 516: Ingrid Newkirk Round 2 Co-founder, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; Advisory Board member, EarthSave International; Advisory Board member, United Poultry Concerns; Director, The Foundation to Support Animal Protection; animal rights activistIngrid Newkirk isn't just the President of PETA, she's also a militant activist. She's soaked herself in fake blood, of course, but she's also been arrested more than 20 times. And she's an avowed supporter of the terrorist Animal Liberation Front. Newkirk wrote a book called Free the Animals! The Untold Story of the U.S. Animal Liberation Front and Its Founder, ‘Valerie.' In it she writes that she has “become somewhat used to jumping on a plane with copies of freshly purloined documents and hurriedly calling news conferences to discuss the ALF's findings.” In 1993, Newkirk arranged an interview for TIME magazine with “Valerie.” Later, the animal-rights movement would be abuzz with speculations that Valerie was just one of Newkirk's PETA employees. The entire episode has suggested what many federal law enforcement officers have openly speculated: that ALF and PETA may be populated with identical personnel, the only difference being a setting sun and a ski mask. Newkirk gives interviews to ALF's publications, supports the legal defense efforts of ALF criminals (with PETA's money), has been subpoenaed in regard to her ALF connections, and has even been accused in court documents of participation in the ALF arson of a Michigan State University research lab. In the 1970s, Newkirk worked for Montgomery County (Maryland), and then for the District of Columbia, as an animal protection officer and deputy sheriff, before becoming DC's first female poundmaster in 1978. She co-founded PETA in 1980 with established animal rights activist Alex Pacheco. Since then, PETA and Newkirk have become synonymous. Former employees refer to PETA as “the cult of Newkirk.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michaeldecon/support

This episode is dedicated to the legendary Karen Davis, PhD, founder and president of United Poultry Concerns (UPC). Karen died on Nov. 4th 2023 of cancer. Vegan since 1983, Karen was an activist, author, outspoken animal advocate, and had a sanctuary for rescued birds on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. United Poultry Concerns was the first sponsor of this podcast and our host, Hope Bohanec, worked with Karen at UPC for close to a decade from 2012 - 2021. Karen started United Poultry Concerns, the first ever organization focused on chickens, in 1990. She wrote numerous books on chickens and turkeys and advocated for an end to not only the farming of these birds, but also cock fighting, down, foie gras, Kapporos, birds used in experimentation, and many other exploitive practices involving chickens and other birds. This episode is a compilation of highlights from the four times Karen was on the podcast. Karen tells the story of how she was inspired by the animal rights movement in the 1980s and how she started United Poultry Concerns. Karen shares some of her philosophies and unique thoughts about chickens and animal advocacy. She also talks about the plight and delight of turkeys. She discusses the importance of language and reveals how she believed chickens, and all animals, have Earth Rights. Rest in Power Karen, we will carry on in your honor. In Memory of Karen Davis: Chicken or Broiler, Cow or Steer, Owner or Guardian? by Karen Davis at UPC-Online.org Original post: https://www.upc-online.org/thinking/140501_liberating_the_language_of_animal_abuse.html *************** The world lost an amazing advocate and educator when Karen Davis, founder of United Poultry Concerns (UPC) “passed away peacefully on the morning of November 4, 2023 at the United Poultry Concerns sanctuary, surrounded by her beloved birds,” UPC announced, pledging to “continue her vision and legacy through our sanctuary and vegan advocacy.” Karen Davis was an icon. She was instrumental in my vegan journey. I learned to understand, love, admire, and appreciate the amazing birds she dedicated her life to educating people about, and am honored to be able to share some of her teachings on the podcast. Many times it was difficult to narrate her articles as they were bringing me to tears. Other times her articles would fill me with joy as I read about the amazing social lives of these precious innocent, defenseless individuals who deserve to be protected and respected. Karen was President and Founder of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other domesticated birds. She created an amazing, open-air, covered sanctuary in Virginia to house and care for them. She is the author of numerous books, essays, articles and campaigns, and host of the Thinking Like a Chicken podcast. I hope we can all step in to help fill the gap in chicken and turkey advocacy left by her passing. If you'd like to listen to past episodes highlighting some of Karen's brilliant work, check out the following. It's amazing to see just this tiny subset of her contribution. Let's all band together and continue to educate ourselves and advocate for these birds.

“Chickens have full color spectrum vision. That means they see the entire spectrum of colors from the infrared to the ultraviolet. The reason that roosters crow when for humans it is still dark outside is because they see the sunrise before we do, because they see infrared light. So, they're up and about in what for them is daylight, when for us it is dark out.” – Karen Davis Karen Davis is the president and founder of United Poultry Concerns. They're an organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domesticated birds. They also have a sanctuary for chickens in Virginia. Karen and I did this interview as a live episode in June. I wanted to talk to Karen about chickens for a couple of reasons, one because they're the most abused land animal on the planet; but also because I wanted to know more about them. Before this conversation I knew very little about chickens. And Karen knows everything there is to know them. She has been advocating for them, studying them, saving them, and writing about them for decades. Her most recent book is called For the Birds: From Exploitation to Liberation. Every year, a staggering 70 billion chickens are raised and slaughtered for meat, and around 300 million more are kept for egg production. And every single one of them is an intelligent, sentient individual.

Geoff Regier rescued a chicken, Penny, from an egg farm. Listen to her story, her transformation, and sadly, her eulogy. Geoff Regier is an animal advocate who used to work on a small family farm in BC, Canada, He later found his way to veganism, then animal rights activism and then an undercover investigator with Mercy for Animals. He documented and exposed the abuse farm animals suffer every day in modern farms and slaughterhouses across Canada. In 2019, Geoff was part of a team that rescued Penny and other hens from an egg farm in BC. She, and many others, had fallen through the slats in the floor, down into the manure pit. She was completely stuck in the manure, unable to move or even stand, she was so weak. She was simply left for dead, to drown in all the excrement, or die of thirst or starvation. Geoff brought Penny home, got her the veterinary care she needed and restored her to health – and her transformation was amazing! You can watch it on YouTube, it's called Penny's Story. It's beautiful! Chickens are such amazing little people! Yet, sadly, some of the most abused, and misunderstood as well. If you want to learn more about chickens, register for the Humane Hoax's free chicken webinar tomorrow, or view the videos at United Poultry Concerns or The Humane Hoax. In Australia, the current review of the Poultry Code is underway. The last review was in 2001 and gained pitifully little for the life of a chicken born into the food production industry which is of no surprise. Birds don't belong in cages, let alone on our plate. Likewise, animal welfare does not belong in the Department of Primary Industries. Like the wings of a caged hen, welfare ain't going to 'fly' there. Listen in to our chat with Karen Davis, a leading international animal rights activist for our treasured feathered friends.
