Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: It's OK to kill and eat animals - but don't get caught slapping one., published by Denis on July 25, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Very short post. This is not my area of expertise at all. But it seems like an opportunity. The Olympics start this week. In the UK, the biggest Olympic story is not about any runner or swimmer or gymnast. It is about animal rights. But, as with most animal-rights stories which make the front-pages (bull-fighting, hunting), it misses the real problem, factory-farming. The story: Apparently a famous Olympian equestrian has been forced to withdraw from the Olympics after footage emerged of her whipping a horse during training, 4 years ago. Cue the standard apologies, the "error of judgment" comment, the universal condemnation - and of course the video is shared with a warning that people might find this shocking. I think it would be wonderful if someone with the right moral stature (which is not me, I'm not even a vegan ...) were to highlight the absurdity of so much moral outrage for an otherwise well-treated, well-fed horse who gets whipped on the leg one time, but no reaction to the billions of factory-farmed animals who suffer in cages for their entire lives before we kill them and eat them. Maybe it would make people think again about factory-farming, or at least ask themselves if their views on animals were consistent. I was reminded of the Tolstoy description of a lady who "faints when she sees a calf being killed, she is so kind hearted that she can't look at the blood, but enjoys serving the calf up with sauce." My point with this post is just that if someone is in a position to express a public opinion on this, or write a letter to the editor, it might be an opportune moment given the size of the story right now. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: If You're Going To Eat Animals, Eat Beef and Dairy, published by Omnizoid on April 23, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Crosspost of my blog. You shouldn't eat animals in normal circumstances. That much is, in my view, quite thoroughly obvious. Animals undergo cruel, hellish conditions that we'd confidently describe as torture if they were inflicted on a human (or even a dog). No hamburger is worth that kind of cruelty. However, not all animals are the same. Contra Napoleon in Animal Farm, all animals are not equal. Cows are big. The average person eats 2400 chickens but only 11 cows in their life. That's mostly because chickens are so many times smaller than cows, so you can only get so many chicken sandwiches out of a single chicken. But how much worse is chicken than cow? Brian Tomasik devised a helpful suffering calculator chart. It has various columns - one for how sentient you think the animals are, compared to humans, one for how long the animals lives, etc. You can change the numbers around if you want. I changed the sentience numbers to accord with the results of the most detailed report on the subject (for the animals they didn't sample, I just compared similar animals), done by Rethink Priorities: When I did that, I got the following: Rather than, as the original chart did, setting cows = 1 for the sentience threshold, I set humans = 1 for it. So therefore you should think in terms of the suffering caused as roughly equivalent to the suffering caused if you locked a severely mentally enfeebled person or baby in a factory farm and tormented them for that number of days. Dairy turns out not that bad compared to the rest - a kg of dairy is only equivalent to torturing a baby for about 70 minutes in terms of suffering caused. That means if you get a gallon of milk, that's only equivalent to confining and tormenting a baby for about 4 and a half hours. That's positively humane compared to the rest! Now I know people will object that human suffering is much worse than animal suffering. But this is totally unjustified. Making a human feel pain is generally worse because we feel pain more intensely, but in this case, we're analyzing how bad a unit of pain is. If the amount of suffering is the same, it's not clear what about animals is supposed to make their suffering so monumentally unimportant. Their feathers? Their lack of mental acuity? We controlled for that by having the comparison be a baby or a severely mentally disabled person (babies are dumb, wholly unable to do advanced mathematics). Ultimately, thinking animal pain doesn't matter much is just unjustified speciesism, wherein one takes an obviously intrinsically morally irrelevant feature like species to determine moral worth. Just like racism and sexism, speciesism is wholly indefensible - it places moral significance on a totally morally insignificant category. Even if you reject this, the chart should still inform your eating decisions. As long as you think animal suffering is bad, the chart is informative. Some kinds of animal products cause a lot more suffering than others - you should avoid the ones that cause more suffering. Dairy, for instance, causes over 800 times less suffering than chicken and over 1000 times less than eggs. Drinking a gallon of milk a day for a year is then about as bad as having a chicken sandwich once every four months. Chicken is then really really bad - way worse than most other things. Dairy and beef mostly aren't a big deal in comparison. And you can play around the numbers if you disagree with them - whatever answer you come to should be informative. I remember seeing this chart was instrumental in my going vegan. I realized that each time I have a chicken sandwich, animals have to suffer in darkness, feces, filth, and misery for weeks on end. That's not worth a ...

Meat Logic: Why Do We Eat Animals? - Charles Horn Charles Horn • Contact: linkedin.com/in/charles-horn-762a911 • Book - Meat Logic: Why Do We Eat Animals #CharlesHorn #Veganism #AwardWinningWriter Charles Horn is an award-winning and Emmy-nominated writer.Horn has authored Meat Logic: Why Do We Eat Animals, a book examining justifications for eating meat and other animal products. The book argues for veganism.   Why do we eat animals? Most of us think this question is absurd, but if pressed to answer we tend to provide one of a number of rationalizations.  For example: "Humans are omnivores."“Every living thing eats other living things.”"Animals don't possess human cognition."“Humans need to eat animals to live.” We've all heard these arguments before, and many others too. Maybe we've even used these arguments ourselves. But are they logically sound? Or is eating animals in fact a prejudice, involving a thought process similar to the thought process behind racism and sexism? How exactly could the subject of eating animals teach us anything about prejudice and human rights? And supposing humans actually did need to eat animals to stay healthy, what can logic tell us about how we should act in such a situation? In Meat Logic: Why Do We Eat Animals, it examines 31 categories of rationalizations for eating animals and puts them all to the test. Do our thoughts and actions stand up to rational scrutiny or not? And if our thought process is ever failing us, can this be illuminated? Reading this book, You may never think of food the same way again. Charles Horn was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, He has a Ph.D. from Princeton University and holds five degrees in engineering and mathematics. He has written for the wildly popular Robot Chicken, Star Wars, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.He also has a hit animated sitcom called Fugget About It.  He is also the author of • The Laugh Out Loud Guide: • That's Just Wrong! For this episode, we are very pleased to have Dr. Hal Herzog back to our show to talk to us about his research area in human-animal interactions(anthrozoology).  Hal has published a second edition of his fascinating book “Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat- Why It's So Hard to Think Straight About Animals.”  His research has been published in journals such as Science, The American Psychologist, The Journal of the Royal Society, The American Scholar, New Scientist, Anthrozoös, BioScience, The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and Animal Behavior. His work has been covered by Newsweek, Slate, Salon, National Public Radio, Scientific American, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune and many other newspapers.  In 2013, he was given the Distinguished Scholar Award by the International Society for Anthrozoology. In this episode, we focused on “The Pet Effect” -the idea that pets improve the well-being of humans.  Hal goes over the data in this regard, and discusses how the “pet effect” may be at least overstated, if not  non-existent, and the reasons why this perception of “animals as miracle workers” remains.  Including how much he loves his cat Tilly, and how he thinks Tilly helps his well-being despite her bird-icidal ways and countless examples of people whose lives are decidedly worse or made more difficult by pets. We delve deeper in the topic by examining the effectiveness of  animals in animal assisted therapy (AAT), for example the use of dogs for the treatment of PTSD with veterans, and question whether the investment required to train the dogs (up to $35,000 per dog) is worth the small effect and the very mixed (at best) data on it.   We conclude by talking about the ethics and morality of keeping animals as pets, and draw some interesting parallels between meat-eating and pet-ownership. Hal also talks about whether it is better to not spay and neuter pets (the answer may surprise you!) and how his daughter Katie Herzog, a journalist, arrived at the decision for her dog “Moose” by digging into the data.  We finished by talking about the issue of personhood for animals including upcoming court cases in the US, like the one of “Happy” the elephant at the Bronx zoo, arguing that some animals may be considered persons, and thus, may not be kept in captivity.  A very fun, interesting episode, and thought provoking episode. We hope you enjoy it! (This episode was NOT brought to you by Purina because boy, they may not like what we have to say). Animals are killed for the purpose of being eaten by humans. This fact has come under ethical scrutiny much more in recent years, mostly due to the exposure to the public of HOW we get our meat. Most of it is from factory farming. We discuss some of the horrors of this process, how this impacts the ethics of consumption of animal products and a way forward for those wishing to live a more ethical life. Stay Curious!

Why are good people not vegan? Many people show tremendous empathy and compassion; they love animals; they deeply care about the planet; they perform selfless acts for others; and yet, they continue to support a system of routine abuse and cruelty. Animal law attorney and former Director of the iconic Vegan Action certification—David Blatte—wrote a book to explain this extreme juxtaposition and how to overcome it. Titled “The Vegan Imperative,” Blatte walks us through the psychological and societal factors of why people eat animals. He also dives into some of his high-profile legal cases, such as banning foie gras in California. This conversation will definitely leave you marinating in thought. What we discuss in this episode:   - What it's like to be vegan in the 90s.    - How to effectively advocate   - Why good people continue to eat meat   - Levels of compassion   - Making the legal case against foie gras and other animal rights cases   - The Vegan Action certification   - David's book, The Vegan Imperative   - How to Win Friends and Influence People   - Diet for a Small Planet   Connect with Switch4Good - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg   - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/   - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/   - Twitter - https://twitter.com/Switch4GoodOrg   - Website - https://switch4good.org/

The Shifting Perceptions Podcast - Inspiration For Creative Lifestyles

Leave Us A Review Ruby Roth is an acclaimed activist, artist, former teacher, and author whose children's books have been featured in The Huffington Post, Change.org, and Glamour. A passionate advocate for creating a more sustainable world, Ruby has taken her vegan food philosophy to major media outlets such as The Today Show, FOX, ABC, and CNN — and as a plant-based family ourselves, we couldn't be more grateful for her work. Ruby has been vegan since 2003, and she first discovered children's interest in veganism while teaching art at an elementary school. This inspired her to write her book, “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” in 2009. “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” was the first non-fiction book of its kind and addresses issues such as factory farming and the effect that meat-eating has on the environment. Most importantly, “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” explains the emotional lives of animals and gives families an opportunity to sit down and open up a dialogue about sustainable living. Since the runaway success of “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” Ruby has created five more beautifully illustrated children's books, including; Vegan Is Love, V Is for Vegan, The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids and the soon to be released, Bad Day. We love this collection of books, not only because it has helped countless parents educate and encourage their children to find a holistic approach to healthy living, but also because it stresses the power of good habits and their ability to change the world for the better.  We got to chat to Ruby about how growing up in a family of holocaust survivors influenced her childhood, what made her want to create such an illuminating series of children's books, and how she manages the inevitable artistic blocks that all creatives face.  The Lasting Effects of Familial Trauma Ruby grew up in a family of Jewish holocaust survivors, and she was candid with us about how this shaped her childhood. As someone who's grandparents were also holocaust survivors, I can relate to Ruby's experience. We shared with each other how our families history permeated our psyche as children, from being proud of our collective resilience to having a deep-seated fear of loss and suffering.  “There's a little bit of an undercurrent, and I wouldn't know otherwise, where it came from, that things could get taken away, or that something bad could happen. You know, there are studies now in, in the field of neuroscience that shows how fear is passed down through generations — even if the children didn't experience the cause of the fear.”  The Importance of Overcoming Resistance  Almost every artist at some point experiences a creative block, it's just part of the process, and can be difficult to navigate out of without conscious effort. Ruby explained to us that she views this resistance and lack of inspiration as something to overcome. One tool she uses to help her stay on track of her “resistance” is to create lists of tasks she needs to complete and to simply remind herself that she is only one person, and there is only so much she can achieve each day.  “There is constant resistance always, in me. And I think in every artist's and creative mind, that is always something that I am overcoming all the time, sometimes it's every day, sometimes multiple times a day. “ All You Can Do Is Try Does anyone truly have everything in life figured out? Whether you're a creative pinpointing your ideal medium and niche, or a parent helping your kids to navigate childhood, most of us are just trying our best. Ruby explained to us the importance of experimenting with your business model and putting yourself out there — even if you aren't sure what the end result might be.  “We are all trying, nobody knows. Even the even top-level people are still experimenting, and aren't sure what's going to work and what isn't. And I often tell myself, you haven't even begun to try. You know, when I'm feeling down or whatever, there are so many things to try and so many avenues to explore that we really cannot let ourselves go down any hole of like, ‘Oh, it's not working. It's not working.' — You haven't even tried, you know?” To hear the rest of our conversation with Ruby, click the player below and prepare to be inspired! I've avoided this topic so far mainly because it’s such an emotive one, in fact it's the main reason many become vegan, and I respect that. Although there is always another side to the story, and the argument around eating animal products often descends into insults far too quickly for it to become a productive discussion. When it comes to our food system we need to ensure it develops in a way that is sustainable and conducive to our future health and that of the planet, and so these difficult discussions need to be had. This show doesn't seek to promote an anti-vegan stance and convince anyone of anything, but it does seek to articulate why many feel that eating animals isn't something they find morally objectionable, so that we can hopefully move past this roadblock and find points of agreement to work towards. Along the way we look at where our morals and ethics come from, whether they are innate, and what that means if they are, and we hope this starts a dialogue between two camps that agree on a lot, despite some stark differences.4.10 Why do people believe what they believe (Vegans & Carnivores)6.40 If you’re vegan and listening…..8:00 The evolution of eating meat9:40 Is It morally correct to eat meat12:30 Issues in the meat industry13:10 what is normal.
