Drive through Kentucky today and you are likely to come across signs reading “Welcome to the Front Porch of the South.” Yet Kentucky has never been an easy state to define. During the Civil War, Kentucky straddled the line between North and South, gaining the somewhat generic classification of a “Border State.” Yet there is a region that Kentucky at one point in time was most identified with and it was neither the North or South. Join us today for a talk with a former research fellow, who helps explain why Kentucky was considered to be a part of the West and why that changed after the Civil War. Dr. Christopher Phillips is the John and Dorothy Hermanies Professor of American History and University Distinguished Professor in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. He holds a PhD from the University of Georgia. He has written numerous books, including Damned Yankee: The Life of Nathaniel Lyon, Freedom's Port: The African American Community of Baltimore, 1790-1860, and The Civil War in the Border South. We are talking today about his award-winning book The Rivers Ran Backward: The Civil War and the Remaking of the American Middle Border. Thank you so much for being here with us today! KHS Chronicles is inspired by the work of researchers from across the world who have contributed to the scholarly journal, The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, in publication since 1903. https://history.ky.gov/explore/catalog-research-tools/register-of-the-kentucky-historical-society Hosted by Dr. Daniel J. This event was a launch of Professor Christopher Phillips' latest book 'Battleground: 10 Conflicts that Explain the New Middle East' published by Yale University Press. The Middle East is in crisis. The shocking events of the war in Gaza have rocked the entire region. More than a decade ago, the Arab Spring had raised hopes of a new beginning but instead ushered in a series of civil wars, coups, and even harsher autocracies. Tensions were exacerbated by the meddling of outsiders, as regional and global powers sought to further their interests. The United States, for so long the dominant actor, had stepped back, leaving a vacuum behind it to be fought over. Christopher Phillips explores geopolitical rivalries in the region, and the major external powers vying for influence: Russia, China, the EU, and the US. Moving through ten key flashpoints, from Syria to Palestine, Phillips argues that the United States' overextension after the Cold War, and retreat in the 2010s, has imbalanced the region. Today, the Middle East remains blighted by conflicts of unprecedented violence and a post-American scramble for power – leaving its fate in the balance. Meet the speakers Christopher Phillips is Professor in International Relations at Queen Mary University of London. Phillips joined the School in January 2012, having previously worked as deputy editor for Syria and Jordan at the Economist Intelligence Unit. He is currently an associate fellow at the Middle East and North Africa programme at Chatham House, working primarily on the Syria conflict and its impact on neighbouring states and the wider Middle East. He is co-curator of ‘Syria: story of a conflict' a public exhibition at the Imperial War Museum and the Imperial War Museum North. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University in 2014 & 2015. Chris lived in Syria for two years, in Aleppo, Damascus and Latakia, and much of his research focuses on that country. Phillips is also author of The Battle for Syria: International Rivalry in the New Middle East published by Yale University Press in 2016. Faisal Al Yafai is International Editor at New Lines Magazine. He is a journalist, playwright, and partner at Hildebrand Nord. He was previously an investigative journalist for The Guardian in London and a documentary journalist for the BBC, and has reported from across the Middle East, from Eastern Europe, Russia and Indonesia. This event was moderated by Rim Turkmani. Rim Turkmani is a Senior Research Fellow in LSE IDEAS and the Research Director for Conflict Research Programme work in Syria. Rim is also the Principal Investigator of the Legitimacy and Civicness in the Arab World research project at the LSE Middle East Centre. Rim's research focuses on legitimate governance in the Middle East with an emphasis on constitutional legitimacy and local conflict and peace drivers.

Welcome to Stats+Stories today we are trying something a bit different, with Major League Baseball's opening day just hours away from the release of this episode we thought we would go back into the vault and throw some old school Stats+Stories baseball episodes at you. The first of which is as far back as you can go into the Stats+Stories archive, our first episode with former host Bob Long former panelist Richard Campbell, and guest Jim Albert who helped usher the show into what it has become today. So without further ado here is episode one, “Baseball and Statistics” with Jim Albert. The second episode features Terence Moore. Moore, who has worked at Atlanta Journal Constitution, CNN, ESPN and other notable outlets had a lot to say about “Reporting On Sports In The Digital Era” so I'll let him take it away with episode 18. Last but certainly not least, we have a much more modern episode of the show which ironically happens to be about the oldest “Numbers Behind America's Pastime”. Christopher Phillips joined us in episode 177 to discuss the entirety of baseball history from the first big league reporter from the early 1900s to the moneyball craze over a century later. Thank you again for listening to this bundled episode of Stats+Stories and send any feedback on the format and what you thought about this episode to our email statsandstories@miamioh.edu and enjoy this final trip to the vault.

World War I was the first great general conflict to be fought between highly industrial societies able to manufacture and transport immense quantities of goods over land and sea. Yet the armies of the war were too vast in scale, their movements too complex, and the infrastructure upon which they depended too specialized to be operated by professional soldiers alone. In Civilian Specialists at War: Britain's Transport Experts and the First World War (U London Press, 2020), Christopher Phillips examines the relationship between industrial society and industrial warfare through the lens of Britain's transport experts. Phillips analyzes the multiple connections between the army, the government, and the senior executives of some of prewar Britain's largest industrial enterprises, revealing that civilian transport experts were a key component of Britain's strategies in World War I. This book also details the application of recognizably civilian technologies and methods to the prosecution of war, and documents how transport experts were constrained by the political and military requirements of coalition warfare. Civilian Specialists at War was a Bronze Medal winner of the Templer Medal Book Prize in 2020 and winner of the Coleman Prize in 2016. The dissertation version of this book, entitledManaging Armageddon: Britain's Transport Experts and the First World War (awarded by the University of Leeds) is freely available from the British Library here. The rats have been around since 1889 and there are never more than 200 members in the order at one time.I was member 883 and my proposer was Roy Hudd OBE and seconder was Roger De Courcey. Can you imagine sitting in lodge listening to anecdotes and laughing at fellow comedians or actors, musicians, magicians, ventriloquists or members of the Royal household sharing one thing that is universal and that is laughter. At one time Laurel & Hardy were sat there with Wee Georgie Wood, or Little Tich would have turned up on a night off to talk about his busy week at the music hall. (With thanks to British Pathe for their incredible archive videos on you tube)Just think of Tommy Cooper and Les Dawson adlibbing across the room when Max Bygraves trying to tell a story… The order is steeped in history of variety and humour, and we meet around 12 times a year on top of organising Charity Events as well as the highlight of each year when that years King Rat plans the biggest party in London in November at their very own Ball.In recent times our last King Rat Duggie Brown was crowned in 2020, for obvious reasons his crown was rolled over to 2021 and 2022 where this year would have been his big event. Sadly, we lost Duggie to a sudden illness mid 2022 which still today saddens us.Duggie was the most brilliant of Kings, we all were treated to the banter, he had the stories, and we were happy to hear them. He worked on stage as a brilliant comedian and as an actor in TV and commercials even towards the end he was turning work away.We miss you Duggie. Max Bygraves OBE loved being part of the GOWR and his story today is told by my first guest in this season. Anthony Bygraves grew up surrounded by the glamour and glitz of British showbusiness and he himself has created a wealth of Music & Comedy as well as kept his father's legacy alive Anthony has Written Produced and Directed shows and records and toured worldwide in his own right. Listen to his story today as we chat about his father Max, The London Palladium, Judy Garland, Peter Brough and Archie Andrews, when James Mason saved his life, his final moments with Tony Hancock in Australia and so much more as he Tells us more than just one story.Welcome to E&T The Rats Anthony Bygraves

The man made comments such as, “Isn't it beautiful, why are you alive, why am I alive,” and ”You ain't so cool, I ain't so cool, why can't we all just be cool?” The 41-year-old Phillips thought the man was intoxicated and yelled for him to leave him alone, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. After Phillips repeatedly yelled at the man to stay away from him, the man walked up to Phillips, their “stomachs touched,” and Phillips stabbed the man, he told police, according to the warrant obtained on Tuesday by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Phillips then called 911 and waited for Fort Worth police to arrive. Authorities found the wounded man, who was later identified as Jasen Robert Crenshaw, 37, of Fort Worth. Crenshaw was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. (Click Here for Full Article)

Gary celebrated his birthday in August by programming the entire month of films for the podcast, so it only stands to reason that Justin would get to do the same for his birth month of November. All month long, we'll be showcasing films that he's personally chosen, all films he's wanted to talk about on the show for a long time, but has never had the chance...until now! For week one, we're starting with a film by Justin's favorite director — and one we've covered on the show in the past — the great Stanley Kubrick. We're joined by special guest Chris Phillips this week to discuss Kubrick's Cold War black comedy DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB. The story behind this film is a fascinating one and we'll talk about how the film went from its original concept as a straight forward thriller about impending nuclear annihilation to its final form as a hilarious and prescient comedy classic. Does DR. STRANGELOVE deserve to be a part of the Psychotronic Canon? Let us know by voting in this week's poll! Weaving together philosophy, social science and neuroscience research, personal anecdotes and dialogues, A Child at Heart takes a radically different approach to the traditional boundaries between childhood and adulthood to reveal how rather than lapse into adulthood, we can achieve what the Greeks of old call arete—all-around excellence—when we look to children and youth as a lodestar for our development.  Childhood is our primary launching pad, a time of life when learning is more intense than at any other when we gain the critical knowledge and skills that can help ensure that we remain adaptable. This book weaves together the thinking of philosophers from across the ages who make the unsettling assertion that with the passage of time we are apt to shrink mentally, emotionally, and cognitively. If we follow what has become an all-too-common course, we denature our original nature—which brims with curiosity, empathy, reason, wonder, and a will to experiment and understand—and we regress, our sense of who we are will become fuzzier and everyone in our orbit will pay a price. Mounting evidence shows that we begin our lives with a moral, intellectual, and creative bang, and in this groundbreaking, heavily researched, and highly engaging volume, today's guest makes the provocative case that childhood isn't merely a state of becoming, while adulthood is one of being, as if we've "arrived" and reached the summit. His life-changing proposition is that if we embrace the defining qualities of youth, we're not destined to become frail, dispirited, or unhinged, we'll grow in a way defined by wonder, curiosity, imaginativeness, playfulness, and compassion—in essence, unlimited potential. We welcome the founder of Socrates Cafe, Maverick philosopher And Author of and the focus of today's show “A Child at Heart: Unlocking Your Creativity, Curiosity, and Reason at Every Age and Stage of Life” - Christopher Phillips More on Phillip here: https://christopherphillips.com/

Speakers: Mandy Turner, Kenyon Institute (CBRL); Florian P. Kühn, Otto von Guericke University; Michael Pugh, University of Bradford; Caroline Hughes, University of Bradford; Christopher Phillips, QMUL; Toby Dodge, LSE Middle East Centre In this book launch, the authors of ‘The Politics of International Intervention: the Tyranny of Peace’ critically explore the practices of peacebuilding, and the politics of the communities experiencing intervention. The contributions to this volume have a dual focus. First, they analyse the practices of western intervention and peacebuilding, and the prejudices and politics that drive them. Second, they explore how communities experience and deal with this intervention, as well as an understanding of how their political and economic priorities can often diverge markedly from those of the intervener. From Cambodia to Afghanistan, Iraq to Mali, interventions in the pursuit of peace have not achieved the results desired by the interveners. But, rather, they have created further instability and violence. The contributors to this book explore why. Recorded on 23 March 2016.
