A live SXSW panel on how employee complaints illuminate the path to organizational innovation.Wrong question: How can AI revolutionize productivity in my organization?Right question: What do my employees hate most about their jobs? For the Portland Trail Blazers, a winning game plan for AI implementation didn't begin with a tech-first approach — it began with a talk-first one. “The whole concept was to talk about pain points," explains David Long, VP of Digital Innovation, describing the "Lunch and Launch" sessions where employees could openly share frustrations about their daily work. “People really enjoy talking about what they hate about their jobs,” says Christa Stout, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, and as they did, they illuminated opportunities for optimization. “By getting this insight across the whole company, it is already opening our eyes [to how] we can potentially transform the business more broadly,” Stout says.In this special live episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, recorded at SXSW, host Matt Abrahams leads a panel with Long, Stout, and Stanford colleague Jeremy Utley, exploring how "catharsis catalyzes change.” For any team wanting to implement new technology or rethink workflows, these experts reveal how creating space for complaints can catalyze meaningful innovation throughout an organization.Episode Reference Links:Jeremy UtleyDavid LongChrista StoutEp.77 Quick Thinks: AI Has Entered The Chat – A "Conversation" with ChatGPTEp.134 How to Chat with Bots: The Secrets to Getting the Information You Need from AI Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (04:42) - The Business Behind Basketball (06:13) - Why AI and Why Now? Bad assumptions. Change that. Assumptions of any kind. They simply ruin your negotiation process. Any time you speak first, you're making an assumption. Anytime you're thinking, you're making an assumption. I know this sounds ridiculous, but unless you actually have a job offer in hand, you don't know what the employer is thinking. This is public enemy #1—assumptions—when it comes to negotiating an offer. Public enemy #2 is not knowing what success looks like and how to argue your value in relation to it. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Fireworks in Cobb: What to Know Stores like Sky King Fireworks and Super Show Fireworks are gearing up for high traffic and significant revenue spikes, with daily sales potentially jumping from $15,000 to $50,000-$70,000 during peak days. Customers are particularly interested in traditional consumer fireworks that shoot into the air, with options catering to various budgets. Both stores emphasize safety, offering QR codes linking to YouTube videos showcasing firework effects to ensure informed purchases. Cobb County residents are reminded of permitted firework hours and safety precautions, including proper disposal and precautions for pets during fireworks displays. STORY 2: KSU-San Jose set for TruTV/Max Kennesaw State University's football team is set to play San Jose State in a nationally televised game on September 14 at 7 pm. The broadcast will be on TruTV/Max as part of the Mountain West Conference's new media rights deal with TNT Sports. This game marks KSU's fifth national network appearance, following three games on CBS Sports Network against Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee, and Liberty in October, and a final game on ESPN2 against Western Kentucky on October 30. This season is significant as it marks KSU's debut in Conference USA and their first year as a Football Bowl Subdivision program. The season kicks off on August 31 at the University of Texas at San Antonio. STORY 3: Fate of Student Housing Development Near KSU Remains Uncertain The Cobb Planning Commission forwarded a proposal for a five-story student housing development near Kennesaw State University to the Board of Commissioners without making a recommendation. Initially deadlocked on a motion to deny the request, they later voted 5-0 to advance it for further consideration. The development by Landmark Properties includes 191 units and 762 bedrooms, a parking deck with 665 spaces, and amenities like a rooftop pool. Debate centered on traffic impacts, with concerns about increased vehicle trips and potential disruptions to the neighborhood. Opponents also raised issues of affordability, crime, and noise. Proponents argued the development supports campus life and addresses housing needs for KSU's large student population. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The sentence was handed down by Superior Court Judge Ann Harris. Westly was arrested after a Cobb Police investigation prompted by the victim's mother, who reported repeated molestation of her child by Westly between 2021 and 2022 when the victim was under 16. Despite Westly's denial and past convictions, cell phone records corroborated the victim's account. Previous victims testified during the trial, detailing similar abuse dating back to 2003. Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Raynor prosecuted the case, with defense attorney Sylvia Goldman representing Westly. District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. commended the victim's bravery in seeking justice. STORY 5: Volunteers Improve Boating Access at Lake Allatoona The Union Sportsmen's Alliance and 31 union volunteers, mainly tradeswomen, collaborated to install a new floating dock at Lake Allatoona's Blockhouse Boat Ramp on June 29. Led by Dyana “Dee” Lee of Sheet Metal Workers Local 85, the project aimed to enhance boater access year-round. The new 55-foot dock, built by AccuDock through a USA partnership, offers double anchor points and extends further into the lake. Volunteers contributed 392 hours, valued at $20,000, with funding from the USA's Atlanta Area Conservation Dinner totaling $43,000. The initiative improves access for the lake's 6.5 million yearly visitors and fosters community support through union collaboration and local conservation efforts. Dr. Emily Joseph, a social science researcher and user researcher for Xbox, discusses the impact of clear and not-so-clear communication on the elicitation of information. She highlights the importance of question phrasing, construct validity, and avoiding contamination of memory and responses. Emily emphasizes the need for open-ended questions, especially in investigative settings, to avoid bias and allow for accurate recall. She also explores the challenges of predicting future behavior and the significance of clear and concise questions in obtaining meaningful insights. Additionally, she addresses the misinterpretation of physical behavior and the influence of cultural and experiential factors. In this conversation, Dave and Emily discuss the importance of asking effective questions in various contexts, such as investigations, interviews, and surveys. They explore the impact of different types of questions, including open-ended and closed-ended questions, on the quality of responses. They also highlight the potential biases and limitations associated with certain question formats. The conversation emphasizes the need for interviewers to be aware of their own biases and create an environment where individuals feel comfortable providing honest feedback. Overall, the key takeaway is the significance of asking neutral and unbiased questions to elicit accurate and meaningful information. Truths: Question phrasing and construct validity are crucial in obtaining accurate and meaningful information. Open-ended questions are essential in investigative settings to avoid bias and contamination of memory and responses. Predicting future behavior is challenging, and questions should focus on thought processes rather than final decisions. Physical behavior should not be relied upon as an indicator of truth or deception, as it can be influenced by various factors. Cultural and experiential factors can impact both verbal and nonverbal behavior, highlighting the need for cultural sensitivity in communication. The interpretation of responses in interrogation footage can be biased, leading to false assumptions of guilt. Closed-ended questions can limit the amount of information obtained, while open-ended questions encourage more detailed responses. The framing and wording of questions can influence the answers given. Likert scales and other survey response options should be carefully designed to capture a full range of perspectives. Interviewers should be aware of their own biases and strive to create an environment where individuals feel comfortable providing honest feedback.

Leveraging AI to unlock new levels of creativity and communication innovationJoin Matt Abrahams with creativity and innovation experts Jeremy Utley and Kian Gohar to explore the transformative potential of AI in the realms of creativity and problem-solving. If you treat artificial intelligence like an oracle, you'll likely be disappointed. But if you treat it like a teammate, Utley and Gohar say you'll be surprised just how helpful a collaborator it can be.Utley, an adjunct professor at the Stanford d.school, and Gohar, a bestselling author, keynote speaker, and futurist, have researched how teams can integrate AI into existing workflows to generate more creative ideas and streamline problem-solving. As they've found, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can be powerful tools for innovation. But without knowing how to implement them, “Most teams leave the vast majority of their innovation potential on the table,” Utley says. In a new white paper, he and Gohar illuminate the path teams can take to use generative AI as a “conversation partner” and transform their brainstorming efforts as a result. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Utley and Gohar discuss how innovators can stop viewing AI as a magic 8-ball, and start treating it as a companion — one ready to roll up its sleeves and dig deep for new ideas.Think Fast, Talk Smart is a podcast produced by Stanford Graduate School of Business. Today's pep talk is a simple reminder that you don't have to have all of the answers to take action! I have a tendency to feel like I need more and more information when I am chasing a goal, and it keeps me stuck in inaction. Maybe you can relate? I take more courses, buy more books, read more articles, and go on social media to compare myself to everyone else. And you know what? Somehow I always feel like I come up short and there's more to learn. Let this episode act as your reminder that there is far more power in taking messy, don't-know-what-you're-doing action than standing still trying to find ALL of the answers. In this episode, The Annuity Man and Peggy Nicholson discuss: Lying in a shallow grave How to live like you're dying Letting money complicate your life Stop waiting for yourself to be ready Key Takeaways: Envision yourself lying in a shadow grave and reflect. Think about your legacy and the people you'll leave behind. What are some things that came to your mind? Live life today like you're dying tomorrow. That doesn't mean doing crazy things with your money, but doing some things that take you out of that comfort zone. Money doesn't solve anything and makes things complicated if you let it. Don't let money complicate your life. Stop waiting for yourself to be ready. You've waited all your life. You have this moment; take it. "We have this moment, we have memories in the past, we can think about the future, but we can only live right now, in this moment…" — Peggy Nicholson. In a world where the hustle and the grind are glamorized, it can be almost radical to consider the importance of rest. Alex Soojung-Kim Pang wants to reinvent work so that we can shorten working hours, and even whole working weeks, in order to promote productivity.Alex is the founder of Strategy And Rest, a company that advises others on how to instill more productivity and creativity in their workforce by providing an environment that facilitates better rest. He is also a visiting scholar at Stanford University, and author of "Shorter: Work Better, Smarter, and Less―Here's How”, as well as “Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less”Does it sound too good to be true? Think you could slow down and rest more? Well, listen as we discuss how the work of the mind can't always fit into a structured schedule, the valorization of overwork and why this balance is NOT too good to be true.Episode Quotes:How we got to a place of forgoing rest:With creative work, unlike, being in the factory or in the field. At the end of the day, we don't have a bucket of widgets or a certain field that's been plowed. And so as a result, the amount of time that we spend working becomes a proxy for how well we are working. And then there are more recent cultural examples that have reinforced this idea, within the tech industry and finance. They have helped undermine the idea that success is a story of steady growth from the mailroom to the corner office. It's now something that happens super quickly in a few years, where you work titanically long hours in between economic slumps and you make your fortune before either you burn out or the next downturn happens.Work as identity:In all of these professions, how you work is an expression, not just of social identity, but of personal identity. And it is really easy to think that the more you work the more committed you seem to your colleagues, the more committed you feel yourself.Who responds well building their own schedule: The people who do well by which I mean, people who both perform well with their jobs and also don't burn out at them after 10 years, tend to be people who are really protective of their free time. They're good about leaving work behind on nights and weekends. They take vacations, they have hobbies, they've got other things in their life than work that keeps them from obsessing about it when they're off the clock.
