That's why, in this episode, we're digging into the scientific evidence to separate fact from fiction. In what might be a slightly bleak but necessary conversation, I'm joined by Dr Olga Pantos to help clear things up about plastics and microplastics.Dr Olga Pantos is a Senior Scientist at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research and co-lead of the MBIE-funded project Aotearoa Impacts and Mitigation of Microplastics. Her background is in marine biology - she completed her undergraduate degree in Marine and Environmental Biology at St Andrews University in Scotland and her doctoral studies at The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. Job openings post a sharp decline The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, also known as the JOLTs report, showed job openings of 7.6 million in the month of December. This was below the estimate of 8 million and the reading of 8.09 million in the month of November. While this may sound disappointing, this still leaves the ratio of open jobs to available workers at 1.1 to 1. A softening labor market is still not a bad thing considering it is coming from such a strong spot where workers have had an immense amount of power over employers for a couple of years. The Fed wants to make sure the labor market isn't too strong as it could cause inflationary concerns, so I actually see this as a positive considering it is still a good report, but not too strong. I still believe the labor market could soften further without it being problematic for the economy.   Jobs growth still looks positive Although the nonfarm payrolls growth of 143,000 in the month of January missed the expectation of 169,000, I still see the number as healthy for a growing economy. This number also came after upward revisions of 100,000 for December and November. The January number was slightly off the average of 166,000 in 2024, but I would expect to see a lower total in 2025 given the fact that the unemployment rate is extremely healthy at 4%. I was surprised to see wage growth accelerate to 4.1% in the month, which was higher than last month's reading of 3.9% and was at the highest level since May 2024 when it also registered 4.1%. At this level I wouldn't say wage inflation is problematic, but I would say it is worth watching. If it reaccelerated to a higher level that could pose problems for the battle over inflation. I would say overall the job report looked healthy with no major surprises and for the most part it would point to a labor market that is continuing to soften, which I believe is good for our economy as a whole.   Redemptions are high for climate mutual funds Climate mutual funds, sometimes called green funds, grew quite rapidly from 2019 through the beginning of 2024. Apparently, investors began realizing that the equity concentration in these mutual funds really hurt their returns in 2024. Redemptions of $30 billion means investors wanted to leave these climate sensitive mutual funds to invest elsewhere. It is estimated worldwide that climate focused mutual funds are approximately $534 billion. Redemptions of $30 billion is a pretty big hit considering that equates to around 5 to 6% of fund assets. Based on how times are changing, I believe going forward investors should not expect their returns to keep pace with the overall market. Another problem for investors is when redemptions in these funds are high, the fund manager must sell off assets to raise cash, perhaps at lower prices which can really hurt the performance of the fund going forward. This is because the stocks have been sold out of the portfolio to raise cash and if the stocks rebound, the fund performance will lag because of the missing equities that had to be sold. On the other side, if they sell positions with a gain, this will create tax consequences for investors.    Behind the curtain of private equity Private equity over the last few years has become the cool thing in investing. Investors have been trying to get into private equity as an alternative asset, which I personally do not believe in because of the behind the curtain details no one knows what's going on. Over the last 10 years, private equity assets have increase 300% to around $4 trillion. What's even more amazing is that the fees collected by these private equity firms has increased 600%! A trade group by the name Institutional Limited Partners Association has had enough. They are pushing for new guidelines to standardize financial reporting for private equity investors including public pension plans, university endowments, and charitable foundations. What I thought was crazy is that private equity firms will vary how much they disclose to their clients based on how much they invest. The small investors will get less information than the bigger investors. In my opinion, it is not a wise place to put your money as I like to know what is going on with my investments. There are ways that the private equity firms are enhancing returns by using certain types of financial engineering as opposed to the old way of selling the companies they buy and returning cash to the investors. The most revealing thing I could find was the median fee that the small investors pay is somewhere around 2%. I have said many times in the past if your broker is trying to sell you or put you into the hot private equity market, I recommend saying no thank you and find another broker.   Are 401(k) Loans a Good Idea? Taking a 401(k) loan may seem like an attractive option for quick access to cash, but it often comes with significant financial drawbacks that make it a bad idea. When you borrow from your 401(k), you are essentially taking money out of your retirement savings, which means losing potential investment growth and compounding returns that are crucial for long-term wealth accumulation. Although you repay yourself with interest, the interest rate is usually lower than what your investments could have earned if left untouched. Additionally, 401(k) loans must be repaid within a set timeframe, and if you leave your job, either voluntarily or involuntarily, the outstanding balance becomes due. Failure to repay results in it being treated as a distribution, triggering income taxes and, if you are under 59½, an additional 10% early withdrawal penalty, plus a 2.5% penalty in California. This can lead to a significant tax burden and further reduce your retirement savings. Moreover, and this is the biggest drawback in my opinion, when you repay the loan with interest, even though you are paying that interest to yourself, you are paying that interest with after-tax dollars which means you are being taxed twice.   First you have to earn that money and pay taxes on it in order to pay the interest, and you are taxed again when you withdraw that money in retirement. Many people also fall into the trap of taking multiple loans, which can create a cycle of dependency and derail long-term financial security. While a 401(k) loan might seem like a convenient way to borrow, the risks of lost investment growth, tax consequences, and potential repayment difficulties make it an unwise financial move in most situations.   Companies Discussed: Fox Corporation (FOXA), PVH Corp. On their recent earnings call, PVH released their earnings report. During this call, CEO Stefan Larsson detailed one of their key initiatives focused on improving the quality of sales in Europe. This includes strategically reducing the number of digital platforms they sell to and discontinuing sales of their brands by third parties on digital platforms. It is believed that such efforts will enhance the quality of sales across both bricks-and-mortar and online channels. PVH has exhibited a solid financial performance, as reflected in the recent earnings call. Central to this is a consistent focus on their distinguished brands; Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. The company has exceeded guidance on both top and bottom-line metrics. This has been in part possible due to their strategy of steering away from regionally targeted brands and focusing on Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. Such a strategy has resulted in growth through strong product campaigns and high-profile marketing initiatives. In reference to consumer trends, PVH highlighted a shift in European consumer sentiment, which reflected a slowdown. Conversely, there was a noted rise in direct-to-consumer sales and increased consumer engagement in Asia. Such observations underscore that PVH is actively tuned into international consumer needs. As it stands, PVH has shown a commitment to upgrade the online shopping experience and has acknowledged the role of worldwide talent partnerships and quality products in driving consumer preference. A key aspect of PVH's future approach is the PVH+ Plan. This involves a drive for growth in crucial regions, a focus on enhancing sales quality, investments in marketing and technology, and efforts towards cost efficiency. CEO Stefan Larsson added, "We see opportunities to centralize processes and improve systems and automation to drive efficient ways of working, coupled with consistent execution of the PVH+ Plan around the world. We believe this could lead to at least 50 basis points of operating margin improvement." This highlights their commitment towards operational excellence. PVH is moving towards enhanced operating margins and expecting growth in earnings per share by 2024. They have already expressed intentions to regain core product category licenses by 2025. As part of their growth initiative, they plan to increase investments and stimulate share buybacks. In summary, based on the earnings call, PVH stands as a company with a tested financial stability, a clear focus on their brands, and a capacity to respond to consumer trends. Their future plans are articulated towards growth and profitability via improving sales quality, enhancing efficiency, and leveraging technological changes, thus reinforcing their position in the global market. However, it's crucial to note that these are planned strategies and their successful execution will ultimately determine the company's performance in the future. On this Flight of The Retail Pilot Ken speaks with LEGEND, Tommy Hilfiger, Principal Designer, Tommy Hilfiger Global.Uplifting and inspiring consumers since 1985, Tommy Hilfiger has pioneered one of the world's most recognized premium lifestyle brands. With Hilfiger's vision and leadership as Principal Designer, his eponymous brand celebrates the essence of classic American style with a modern twist. Tommy Hilfiger offers premium quality and value to consumers worldwide under the TOMMY HILFIGER and TOMMY JEANS lifestyles, with a breadth of collections including men's, women's and kids' sportswear, denim, accessories, and footwear.Hilfiger's career in fashion began when he was a high school student in 1969 — opening his first store, People's Place, in his hometown of Elmira, New York. A decade later, he moved to Manhattan to pursue a career in fashion design, before launching his namesake brand with a single menswear collection. Since then, global retail sales of TOMMY HILFIGER products have grown to reach approximately $9.1 billion in 2022, powered by more than 16,000 associates worldwide — present in 100 countries and more than 2,000 retail stores, including its largest global flagship store at tommy.com.Hilfiger has a longstanding passion for philanthropy and making the world a better place for future generations. Through the global TommyCares organization, the brand supports various international initiatives and charities like Save the Children, the World Wildlife Fund and Fashion Minority Alliance. Hilfiger currently sits on the Board of Next for Autism. Through the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Frontier Challenge and People's Place Program, the brand is also making strides in its ambitious vision to create fashion that Wastes Nothing and Welcomes All – which actively focuses on topics such as social and environmental sustainability, diversity, and inclusivity in fashion and beyond.Diverse achievements in business and fashion have earned Hilfiger numerous distinguished awards including the CFDA's prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, British GQ's Design Legend of the Year in 2020, BFC's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2021 and WWD's John B. Fairchild Honor for Lifetime Achievement in 2022. Hilfiger's life and career have been chronicled in his memoir, American Dreamer, published in November 2016 — reflecting his experiences in the fashion industry from the last 35-plus years. Recounting his early childhood and formative years, it explores the setbacks, triumphs, and sheer determination that drove him to build a multi-billion-dollar global brand.Key takeaways from this interview include:Tommy Hilfiger's Background: Tommy Hilfiger began his journey in retail and design at a young age, starting his own business at 18 years old by opening a retail store -People's Place - selling jeans in 1969. This venture eventually led him to designing and creating products for his stores, culminating in the establishment of his own brand.Innovative Store Concepts: Hilfiger's early stores, particularly People's Place, were not just retail outlets but cultural hubs influenced by music and fashion. They offered a variety of products, hosted band practices, and provided an immersive experience for customers, aligning with the youth culture of the time.Cultural Influences on Brand Identity: Hilfiger aimed to differentiate his brand from traditional preppy styles by infusing it with elements of music, particularly hip-hop, and embracing a more inclusive approach to fashion. This cultural fusion helped establish the personality of the Tommy Hilfiger brand.Disruptive Advertising Strategy: The Hangman ad campaign, conceived by advertising executive George Lois, was a bold and disruptive move that garnered attention for the brand. Despite initial criticism, the controversial campaign succeeded in sparking conversation and establishing Tommy Hilfiger as a distinctive player in the fashion industry.Strategic Partnerships and Growth: Strategic partnerships, such as those with Marjani International and later with Silas Chao and Lauren Stroll, played a crucial role in the brand's growth and expansion. These partnerships facilitated strategic decisions like expanding into Europe and launching successful product lines such as fragrances, contributing to the brand's success and eventual IPO.Archives and Relevance: Both Tommy Hilfiger and Karl Lagerfeld emphasized the importance of going back to fashion archives and making past designs relevant for today's market. This approach ensures a timeless appeal while staying fresh.Strategic Partnerships: The acquisition by Apex and subsequent sale to PVH provided strategic opportunities for Tommy Hilfiger's brand growth. Apex helped in repositioning the company, while PVH's ownership of other brands like Calvin Klein created synergies beneficial for both.Brand Positioning: The positioning of Tommy Hilfiger's brand differs between the US and Europe. Understanding regional customer preferences and pricing strategies is crucial for successful brand positioning.Design Process: Tommy Hilfiger's use of technology, such as 3D design, and the centralization of its design team in Europe contribute to a more efficient and precise design process. This enables faster response to market trends and ensures product quality.Marketing and Brand Communication: The brand utilizes a mix of influencer collaborations, celebrity endorsements, and unique marketing campaigns to amplify its brand message. Embracing digital technologies like augmented reality and exploring AI's potential are also part of the brand's forward-thinking approach to marketing.
