Numbers 23: Balaam's Prophecies Over Israel Numbers 23 is a critical chapter in the biblical narrative, highlighting God's sovereignty over His chosen people, Israel. It takes place in the broader story of Balak, the king of Moab, who hires Balaam, a pagan diviner, to curse Israel because he fears their strength and growing presence. However, instead of cursing Israel, Balaam is compelled by God to bless them. Summary of Numbers 23 1.Balak's First Attempt to Have Israel Cursed (23:1-12) Balak takes Balaam to a high place called Bamoth Baal, from where he can see part of Israel's camp. Balaam instructs Balak to build seven altars and offer sacrifices on them. Balaam goes aside to seek the Lord, and God puts a message in his mouth. Instead of cursing Israel, Balaam proclaims a blessing, declaring that Israel is a special nation, set apart by God. Balak is frustrated, but Balaam reminds him that he can only speak what God commands. 2.Balak's Second Attempt to Have Israel Cursed (23:13-26) Hoping for a different outcome, Balak takes Balaam to another location, the field of Zophim, on the top of Pisgah, where he can see more of Israel. Again, seven altars are built, and sacrifices are made. Balaam seeks the Lord, and once more, God gives him a message of blessing for Israel. He proclaims that God does not change His mind like humans and that He has blessed Israel, and no curse can overturn that. Balaam also declares that Israel will be victorious over its enemies. Balak is increasingly angry, but Balaam insists he can only declare what God reveals to him. Key Themes in Numbers 23 1.God's Sovereignty Despite Balak's attempts to manipulate events, God remains in control. Balaam, though a pagan diviner, is used by God to deliver truth, showing that God can work through anyone to fulfill His purposes. 2.The Unchangeable Blessing of God Balaam's second prophecy (23:19-20) is particularly powerful: “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” This emphasizes that when God blesses, no human power can reverse it. 3.God's Protection Over Israel Israel is described as a nation separated for God, a people who will be victorious. This foreshadows God's faithfulness to Israel throughout history, despite challenges and opposition. Lessons from Numbers 23 God's Word is Final: No external force can override what God has spoken. If God declares blessing over someone, it will stand. Faithfulness Over Fear: Balak operates from fear, but fear leads to futile attempts to resist God's will. Trusting in God's plan is always better. God Uses Unexpected People: Balaam, a non-Israelite and a diviner, becomes a mouthpiece for God. This shows that God can use anyone to accomplish His purpose. Conclusion Numbers 23 is a powerful reminder that God's will prevails over human schemes. Despite Balak's determination to harm Israel, God turns the intended curse into a blessing. The chapter reinforces that God is faithful, His word is unchangeable, and His protection over His people is secure. This remains an encouraging message for believers today: when God blesses, no one can reverse it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

Project Mercury was NASA's first attempt at human crewed space flight. It sent Alan Shepard into space, and John Glenn into orbit, among four other landmark flights over 5 years. By 1963 it was done, and NASA was ready to launch Gemini, its next project. But being such a groundbreaking project, in 1964 NASA paid tribute to Mercury with a four metre high stainless steel monument with a time capsule that would remain sealed beneath it until the year 2464, five centuries later. What was so significant about Mercury? And what's inside this time capsule? This week IM Levy Rozman (Gotham Chess) makes his annual return to Perpetual Chess to discuss what is new with him. I was particularly excited to chat with Levy as he recently announced his renewed pursuit of the GM title. Levy has been sharing lesson snippets and discussing his tournament plans on his channel, but I wanted many more details. What did he learn from his first norm-chasing experience? What will he do differently this time? Does he think he will be able to stick with it? Although most of us will never make GM, Levy's quest to make it to the next level is relatable for me and for many other chess players. Aside from his OTB comeback, we discussed the swift rating-rise of popular gamer, Tyler 1, and the successes and lessons learned from Levy's book. Levy shared a few stories from meeting celebrities in recent months. It's always fun catching up with Levy, and I am especially excited to follow his renewed pursuit of the GM title! Guest Details Marc Hamilton: https://coveryours.co.nz/about/ Takeaways Music and comedy can evoke emotions and create a sense of connection. Authenticity is important in creative endeavors and can attract like-minded individuals. Universal themes in storytelling and music resonate with people across cultures and time. Constructing a set or a song involves considering the emotional journey and engaging the audience. Dealing with hate or criticism requires thick skin and the ability to not take it personally. Finding humor in absurd or anger-inducing situations can be a source of comedy. The creative process involves finding inspiration in everyday experiences and emotions. Crafting comedy takes time and practice, and it's important to learn from failures and keep refining jokes. Art, including comedy, has the power to eloquently convey the harshness of the world in a socially acceptable way. The ability to shock and offend depends on the context and the audience, and it's important to understand the crowd and adapt accordingly. Working with troubled youth requires empathy, understanding, and the ability to separate their actions from their identity. Asking for help and finding someone to talk to can make a significant difference in difficult situations. The podcast discusses whether a beginner can build a fishing rod as good as a factory rod on their first attempt. Tom Kirkman agrees it's possible if the builder has good hand skills and common sense. He emphasizes starting simply with basic equipment like cardboard or wood blocks, thread spools, and brushes. Taking a class can help reduce fear and ensure success.Kirkman advises focusing on functionality over aesthetics when first starting out. Information overload should be avoided. He recommends books by Boyd Pfeiffer and his own guide as good starting resources. Builders should aim to copy an existing rod design or enjoy the process rather than stress over decorative techniques. With practice, most builders can create a rod as good as a factory version within a few tries. Diligence, quality control, and not rushing the process are important. Some days everything goes wrong, so it's okay to take a break from the project. Resources like Rodmaker Magazine provide inspiration for all skill levels. Connecting with local groups offers support. Overall, rod building is an accessible and relaxing hobby for skilled hands.
For this, the 64th episode of the Camerosity Podcast, the gang finally devotes our full attention to one of the most popular brands of cameras ever made. A camera brand that was so popular, they named the entire company after it, the Rolleiflex! Originally founded by two ex Voigtländer employees who had an idea on how to build a better soldier's camera, a new company called Franke & Heidecke was created, and from there, a whole legacy of twin lens, and eventual single lens reflexes was born. Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike are returning callers Bill Smith, John Roberts, Marc Gordon, Patrick Casey, Rafael Espinosa, Tim Peters, and first time callers Dean Robinson and Steve "Johnny Appleseed" Lederman. In this episode, we will cover the early history of the company, how Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke first got started, the early and later Rolleiflex and Rolleicord TLRs. We also cover their transition into both medium format and 35mm SLRs, the compact Rollei 35, the Cosina made Rollei 35 RF, and a few other Rollei models. We ask the tough questions like what is the difference between a Rolleiflex and Rolleicord, are the triplet lenses really that much worse than the Tessars, are German Rolleis better than Singapore Rolleis, and what are everyone's favorite models. In addition to Rollei GAS, we briefly discuss a strange Japanese Rollei copy, why people tend to blend in better using cameras with waist level vs eye level viewfinders, the confusing transition from Voigtländer, Zeiss-Ikon to Rollei, and whether or not Vivian Maier was creepy. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, we are finally going across the pond for another European time zone friendly episode. If you are a fan of the show but are asleep or otherwise unable to join us for our regular recordings, this is the episode for you! We will record Episode 65 on Monday, February 12th at Noon Central Standard Time (-6 UTC), 1pm Eastern Standard Time (-5 UTC), 6pm Greenwich Mean Time (+0 UTC), 7pm Central European Time (+1 UTC), and 5am Tuesday morning Australian Eastern Daylight Time (+11 UTC). McDonald's created a stir last week with the opening of a second concept, a drive-thru drinks operation called CosMc's. But it's far from the first time the Golden Arches has tried to find gold from a second venture. It's been tinkering with possible additions to its single-brand fold almost from the time Ray Kroc got involved with the chain. The possibilities have included everything from a beer garden to an amusement park to a mixed-use complex that could have been a model for Mall of America. And those were all before its diversification binge of the late 1990s. Yet not one of those notions worked for Big Mac. Today, McDonald's Corp. is still synonymous with the McDonald's chain. Find out what happened from this week's episode of Restaurant Rewind, a podcast that look back into the industry's past for a better understanding of what's happening today. You'll find it wherever you get your podcasts.

To celebrate our 100th Episode, we're re-releasing our very first episode! Travel back to how it all began with Episode One! It's the middle of the Pandemic, Rob & Will are locked-down in their houses, they don't know how to make a podcast and they really know each other! See how far we've come as we make our first attempt to cover Marvel Comics, the MCU and the first Iron Man movie! The sound quality is dodgy, the show has no format, but this is how it all began and we somehow lasted 100 episodes! Today we discuss Rose Wilder Lane's book "Discovery of Freedom". Specifically we focus on "War" from Part I, and "The First Attempt" and "The Second Attempt" from Part II. Ultimately she's making the point that Abraham, Muhammad, and Jesus all preached about individualism and breaking away from authority figures. Also, war == bad. There's nothing like a big public failure in your first days on the job to inspire confidence. But that's what NASA faced 65 years ago today, when it was just 10 days old. It launched its first spacecraft, Pioneer 1. The probe was aiming for the Moon. It never got there. To be fair, the Pioneer project was created by the Air Force, which conducted the launch. It had already launched the first craft in the series, known at the time as Able-1, in August of 1958. It blew up during launch. The project was turned over to NASA when it came into existence, on October 1st. The name was changed to Pioneer. And on October 11th, Pioneer 1 headed for the Moon. The plan called for it to enter lunar orbit. It would beam pictures and other observations of the Moon back to Earth. And on the way, it would provide details on Earth's recently discovered radiation belts. But the second stage of the booster rocket shut down early, so Pioneer wasn't moving fast enough to escape Earth's gravity. It did get about a third of the way to the Moon — much farther from Earth than any spacecraft had gone before. And it made good measurements of the radiation belts, as well as the magnetic field between Earth and the Moon. The craft was destroyed when it plunged back into Earth's atmosphere. Pioneer 2 was launched a month later. It failed, too. In fact, NASA didn't score a successful lunar mission until 1964 — six years after the agency's birth. How do you find balance in today's world? How do you find balance within yourself and trust the decisions you've made, even when they don't end up the way you intended? In this episode, Angee and Jaime dive into many of life's decisions and discuss how to reframe the “lessons” from the decisions we look back on with shame or regret. It all comes back to this lesson of learning to trust yourself and providing yourself with grace for doing your best, while recognizing your decisions simply are just that... decisions. Neither good nor bad. Just opportunities to learn how to play this game called life. Life isn't a pass or fail exam. It's a dance we learn as we go. If you only take away one thing from this episode it's, like a pendulum, there is a duality in all things. You can see your choices as failures, or you can find the lessons through each choice you make. YOU get to decide which direction the pendulum swings. Remember, FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning. If you need a little assistance or a new mantra to get you started, just take this little nugget of wisdom Angee discovered along her journey, “I didn't fail. I just learned how not to succeed.” Other highlights from the episode include toxic stress, the poverty/wealth gap, Val Kilmer, delayed gratification, The Alpha Generation, and a few jokes sprinkled in for your pleasure. After the British gained control of the Ohio Valley, settlers moved into the region, however, skirmishes with the French, who lost the territory, and the Natives, who had legitimate authority over it, intimidated the new Virginians. Hence, the idea of a 14th self-governing colony was hatched for the area from leaders in Philadelphia, and to win the approval of King III, they gave it a name that honored the Queen Charlotte.
