Visit us at shapedbydog.com In episode 229, I shared the story about finding joy with a “mighty dog” in my life, a Jack Russell Terrier mix named DeCaff. In Part 2, I admit a painful lesson around frustration, shame and struggle between two of my Terriers; as well as the last six lessons my agility champion taught me about conditioning positive emotional responses, arousal states in dog training, seeing behavior as communication, the canine gut-brain axis, and most importantly: forgiveness of self and others. In this episode you'll hear: • DeCaff's Story, Part Two: A painful admission about my world champion agility dog. • Lesson 1: A dog shutting down during training is feedback to you. • About DeCaff's slow weave pole times. • Lesson 2: A dog's behavior is a critique of your training plan, skills and execution. • How I used time outs in the past. • About DeCaff's aggression redirection. • Lesson 3: Never sidestep the lesson the dog is trying to share with you. • About my a-ha moment with the “Smack Da Baby” tug game. • How I doubled my agility dog's weave pole times with positive conditioning. • Lesson 4: You can't truly help a dog you've labelled or compared. • How to acknowledge a dog's limitations but focus on their joy and strengths. • Lesson 5: Release guilt, shame and angst we have about our dogs. • When DeCaff jumped my sick senior dog. • My struggles training DeCaff after the death of my other dog, Twister. • About forgiveness for mistakes made with your dog. • Lesson 6: Focus on you and your dog's improvements. • About the lessons dogs bring to our lives. • About the link between gut health, a dog's reactive behavior and their neuroses. Training Without Conflict® Podcast Episode Fourteen: Michael ShikashioRecently, Ivan invited Michael Shikashio to the TWC podcast. Michael and Ivan may hold at times different opinions on dog training. However, they had a great, respectful conversation that explored these views and ideas. Is it possible to bring the dog training communities together, rather than increase the polarization? Both Ivan and Michael recognize that there are those on the far extremes of the dog training spectrum who are immovable in their ideologies, but they also are certain that there are the trainers in the middle who have the most to gain from such conversations. We hope that this podcast will encourage dog trainers on both sides to continue to talk with each other. Sharing knowledge and experience is how we advance – not by looking down on each other, and certainly not through legislations or bans. Here are some links to videos discussed in the podcast:https://youtu.be/9B-gt0aEtYwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki74sxKfXYMMichael Shikashio, CDBC, is the founder of AggressiveDog.com and focuses on teaching other professionals from around the world on how to successfully work aggression cases. Today's Topic: Having a dog who displays aggressive behaviors, whether it's directed towards other dogs, people, or things in the environment, can be difficult enough to manage and live with when your dog's triggers are known and reliably trigger your dog. But it can be made more difficult to deal with when the aggression is significantly more random in nature. It can have profound effects, for example, on where you feel you can go, who you feel you can be with, and who you're comfortable leaving your dog with (if ever), for fear that an incident involving your dog will result in physical and/or financial harm. That's why we invited the world-renowned expert on aggression in dogs, and the founder of AggressiveDog.com, Michael Shikashio, CDBC, to the pod, to discuss the difference between reactivity and aggression, the common signs we miss, how to turn unpredictability into predictability, and whether he thinks that all aggression in dog cases can be addressed using positive training techniques (HINT: YES, YES, YES!)Guest Bio: Michael Shikashio, CDBC, is the founder of AggressiveDog.com and focuses on teaching other professionals from around the world on how to successfully work aggression cases. Who is the most famous dog in the world? It may surprise you to know, he isn't even real yet he says words that we, human beings would often like to say. In today's creature feature I'll share some fun facts about this character that most children know and love, and many adults still fondly remember. Continuing my conversation with dog aggression expert, Michael Shikashio, CDBC, (aggressivedog.com) we talk about what to do if you are out walking your dog and suddenly one or more dogs becomes aggressive and start attacking your dog – how to ward off the dogs, and stay safe yourself. We also cover why other dogs may join in when only one originally attacked. Does your cat seem to have a preoccupation with open doors – making mad dashes to go through them? It can be hard to catch the cat if it gets outside or they can run off, become lost and never return. Door dashing can be a real problem for many people. In this episode, I explain some ways to make the door unpleasant so the feline will want to stay away from it. See the companion blogs for the podcast episodes at www.raisingyourpaws.com. Melanie and I also chat about lack of client participation which is another hot topic for trainers, and why there are often valid reasons why this might be happening in aggression cases, and we unpack those in this episode. As many of you dedicated listeners know, most of the episodes in this podcast focus on dogs, of course. This time, we are going to dive deep into the human side of the relationship. In this episode, I chat with Clair Hickson, who has a wonderfully unique perspective and approach to working with the humans in aggression cases. We explore something called the grief cycle, which can be a common progression of emotions a pet owner can experience when their dog has a history of displaying aggressive behavior. And we also do some rapid fire brainstorming through a bunch of different scenarios where crucial conversations are often necessary in our work with clients.Clair's Upcoming Course!Clair's WebsiteIf you want to learn more about helping dogs with aggression, we offer webinars, courses, conferences, and more!AggressiveDog.comAggressive Dog Educational OfferingsAggression in Dogs Conference
