On today's episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner I've got returning guest John Harris Dunning on the show with me to chat about his new Dark Horse Comics Project, Ripperland, co-written by Steve Orlando, with artwork from Alessandro Oliveri, colors by Francesca Vivaldi, and lettering duties covered by Fabio Amelia. We touched on the project in October when John dropped in for our Horror Movie Recommendation Special that Dark Horse co-sponsored with us, but I wanted to hear the full picture, so we made time during the busy holiday season to sit down again for a bit. Ripperland is set in a dystopian future where Victorian England has become a historical theme park for American tourists. Alan Moore's From Hell has been an all-time favorite of mine so it was a delight to hear John's take on the cultural implications of the Jack the Ripper mythos and the wider nuances he's exploring about our national identities and how they interact through the detectives in the story working collaboratively to solve a murder. He also shares what the collaboration process has been like working with Steve on the project. Ripperland is out in stores on January 22, 2025. When Steve Foxe reaches out and tells me you really should interview this guy, I listen so I'm introducing a new guest on with me today, John Harris Dunning. John is the writer of several graphic novels including Tumult, Wiper, and Salem Brownstone and he co-created the Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the UK at the British Library which is the largest exhibition of comics in the UK. In past decades in our community, especially in Sydney, a Greek Jew named Alberto Yacoel was active and was attending community events. When it came to introducing himself in Greek, he did so by the name Alekos. Alberto Yacoel had served in the Greek army, then fought on the Albanian front and during the German occupation took part in the National Resistance. He was captured by the Germans and was one of the few survivors of the Holocaust. He later emigrated to Australia, maintaining close contacts with the local Greek community. Alberto Yacoel's daughter, Nina Angelo, was born in Athens in 1947. Recently she published a book titled "Don't Cry, Dance. The book is described as a Holocaust survival story in Auschwitz. It was there that her Greek-Jewish father and her Polish-Jewish mother had met. The family emigrated to Australia in 1949. Nia Angelo unravelled the tangle of her family history in a lengthy interview with our programme, SBS Greek.

Oriana Fallaci fue escritora y periodista. Considerada como la primera mujer italiana corresponsal de guerra. Una cronista brillante, con un carácter duro, quizás marcado por su infancia en la Italia de Mussolini. Su padre era albañil y partisano antifascista. El 21 de agosto de 1973, Fallaci conoció a Alekos Panagoulis el día que salió de la cárcel. El fue uno de los líderes de la oposición griega a la Dictadura de los Coroneles. Fue perseguido, torturado y luego apresado. Lo que comenzó como una charla entre un político y una periodista terminó en un romance hasta el día de la muerte del griego. Esta carta fue escrita en los primeros momentos de ese amor intenso y tormentoso. Un amor a primera vista, que la inspiró para escribir ese maravilloso libro llamado “Un hombre”. Lee la actriz Julieta Vallina. ****** Alekos querido, Te había escrito una larga carta. Pero la tiré. No me sentía, y todavía no me siento autorizada a decirte ciertas cosas. Te lo diré en voz alta, creo, cuando vuelva a verte. A veces es mucho más fácil usar palabras que, por escrito, dan miedo. Aunque sean palabras hermosas. O tal vez precisamente porque son palabras demasiado hermosas. Hoy solo quiero agradecerte. Agradecerte por existir, por haber vivido, por haberme regalado veinticuatro horas nobles y una hora feliz. Veinticuatro horas no son muchas, normalmente, para comprender a una criatura. Una hora no es mucho, normalmente, para sentir felicidad. Pero cuando, como tú, se ha aprendido a medir el tiempo sin tiempo, veinticuatro horas pueden ser suficientes para comprender y una hora puede ser suficiente para darnos la mano sin sospechas de burla. Te agradezco también haberme permitido invadir tu privacidad con consejos no solicitados. Te ruego pensarlos y te repito: has visto tanta fealdad en estos cinco años, tanta oscuridad. Ahora debes regalarte a ti mismo un poco de belleza y un poco de luz. Es un deber hacia ti mismo como ser humano, y es un deber hacia tu equilibrio nervioso, tu espléndida inteligencia. Pero, si me lo permites, si te gusta, prometo desviar el viento en tu dirección. Y es una promesa seria. Soy una persona seria. Tal vez hasta demasiado seria. Y, puesto que soy seria, no digo mentiras. No dije una mentira ayer, cuando tuve que irme. No había lugares en el avión para el día siguiente. Y no podía permitirme perder un día. Mañana mi trabajo debe estar terminado y, también hacia ti, mi primer deber es usar mi profesión y mis capacidades para contar a los demás quién eres. Debes comprender. Sé que, en el fondo de tu mente, comprendes. Por otro lado, fue mejor así. Es mucho mejor y más correcto que vuelvas. De todos modos, volveré pronto. Ocho o diez días pasan rápido. E incluso si fueran doce días… Te ruego: espera. Quien ha esperado la libertad por años puede esperar también a una persona por unos días. Si veinticuatro horas pueden ser tan largas como veinticuatro días, diez días pueden ser breves como doce horas. Para mí es así. Y espero que sea así también para ti. Es todo, por hoy. Por otro lado, no sé si entenderás esta carta en italiano. Eso es terrible. Sí, realmente terrible no poder hablarle solo a una criatura a la que se tiene todo para decirle. ¿Aprenderás realmente el italiano para hablarme y escucharme sin la presencia de otros?
