[Here's a list of every past podcast episode, dealing with mental health]From first grade through college, Seacoast family and staff member, Alexandra Hunt, battled eating disorders. She bravely recounts excessive exercising as a child, binge eating, and forcing herself to throw up in college. Well into adulthood, Alexandra realized that starving herself was not the answer. She is now focused on healing from a lifetime of low self-image and finding freedom in her nutrition and exercise routines. Although it's not a struggle she considers to be completely in her past, Alexandra shares rich lessons she's acquired over the years including the importance of finding identity as a beloved child of the King and mindfully reshaping her relationship with health, food, and her body. She has learned that when one accepts God's love and takes captive dark thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5), the lies will be exposed and rendered powerless. She teaches all of us to "boast all the more gladly in our weaknesses so that Christ's power may rest upon us” (2 Corinthians 12:9). At the top of the episode, Joey, Lynne, Roy and Jack discuss "PC culture" and whether phrases like "you need a therapist" or "I'm so OCD" (said by a person without the disorder) are harmful or innocent. On this EpisodeAlexandra Hunt / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramLynne Stroy, host / InstagramJack Hoey III, host / InstagramRoy Jacques, host / Facebook Executive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, including theme song: Joel T. Alexandra Hunt is a public health researcher, a girls' soccer coach, an advocate for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice, and an organizer. Alexandra ran for Congress in 2022, challenging a longtime local politician, because she didn't want anyone in our community to be unseen or unheard, anymore. She then ran for City Controller in 2023. Though the campaign has ended, her commitment to building a Philadelphia in which no one has to live in the shadows, endures. Alexandra is continuing her activism on local issues of importance – from addressing the root causes of violent crime, to justice reform, from ending “heath care deserts” exacerbated by the closing of Hahnemann University Hospital, to ensuring true equity in public school education – there is no shortage of challenges facing Philadelphia. Alexandra continues to believe progressive solutions to those issues are within reach, and is committed to helping make them happen.

What role does mental illness play in gun violence?

After a mass shooting like the one in Highland Park, Illinois July 4, we ask ourselves what motivated the shooter? Often, many people will cite mental health and say the person who killed our wounded those around him or her was suffering from mental illness.  Sometimes, that is the case, although most research indicates mental illness is a factor in a small percentage of incidents. The gun bill passed by Congress and signed by President Biden last week includes new money for the treatment of mental illness. Will it stop the rash of mass shooting around the country? Alexandra Hunt is a health researcher and former Congressional candidate who says mental illness is not one size fits all and what moves most shooters to violence. She appears on Wednesday's Smart Talk.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Biden administration is teasing a new round of student debt cancellation and relief. The Education department said on Tuesday that this could mean debt cancellation for about 40,000 borrowers and three years of additional credit for more than 3.6 million borrowers seeking income-driven repayment. That could add another boost to the economy and the long-term well-being of tens of thousands of Americans. Bankrate study. The woman behind the “Libs of TikTok” Twitter account has been outed in new reporting by Taylor Lorenz in the Washington Post. Lorenz reports that Chaya Raichik, a real estate salesperson in Brooklyn, is behind the account which has spread “groomer” conspiracy theories on social media and has the ears of right-wing lawmakers such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.  Jeffrey Yass, the head of Susquehanna International Group, and the deep-pocketed right-wing political funder is officially the richest man in Pennsylvania, according to a new analysis by ProPublica. He has collected an average of $1.3 billion a year in annual income from 2013 - 2018. Only five other Americans earned more.  This morning the New York Times released a report that reviewed 21 of Florida's rejected math books. Florida's Dept. of Education reported that the rejected books contained “prohibited topics” such as critical race theory and social emotional learning. Only four pages were released by the Dept as examples; one contained a problem set that used statistical data from the Race Implicit Association Test.  Court challenges were filed by a Lycoming County resident calling for the removal of Doug Mastriano and Scott Perry from ballots for next month's primary because of their participation in the January 6th Capitol insurrection.   Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is looking to sell off two of the luxury dorms at Edinboro University that were completed just 10 years ago and featured quite prominently in my early reporting at Raging Chicken. “Wall Street on the Susquehanna: PASSHE Bond Scheme Bleeds Education Budget for Beautiful Buildings” Palisades made headlines again! 2808 - What Reality TV Says About Society's Rot w/ Danielle Lindemann & Alexandra Hunt

Emma hosts Danielle Lindemann, Associate Professor of Sociology at Lehigh University, to discuss her recent book True Story: What Reality TV Says About Us. Then, Emma is joined by Alexandra Hunt, candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania's 3rd District, to give us an update from the campaign trail! First, Professor Lindemann joins as she and Emma bond over their school rivalries and love for reality TV, diving into how these reflections of social interaction and hierarchy can provide a zany, yet very useful sociological lens. They begin by situating where and how the social juggernaut that is reality TV came to be, looking to the 2000s cultural benchmark of “Survivor” to serve as the emergence of the genre, before it took off on a wider scale amid the 2007 writers' strike. This leads them to a discussion on how reality TV's structure differs from typical programming, requiring drastically less overhead, from flexibility in paying talent, to lack of writers or any union staffing, and how the genre fits into the profit incentives of the industry, and thus reflects many of the economic models of our society, particularly when it comes to the gig economy. Next, Professor Lindemann dives into how she unpacks this sociological lens throughout her work, looking first at the smallest social unit of the individual, before working through what it can tell us about families and other smaller groups, leading all the way up through the larger and more abstract social structures of class, race, gender, and sexuality. Emma then gets into how, despite the largely hedonistic picture that reality TV shows paint, the majority of them still work to reinforce conservative and Christian values, showing the right ways that certain people should act and dress, as she looks to Rachel Lindsay's discussion of being the first Bachelorette of color, and the insanely high standards she had to meet to even be a part of that world. Then, they look to American Idol as Emma and Danielle explore how reality TV is a producer's dream in terms of its ability to be manipulated to tell a specific story, as this talent show was able to constantly spew themes of patriotism, individualism, and meritocracy. They then look to the larger themes that we can see in the genre, as it explains to us the legitimacy of the class system, from the Honey Boo Boos and Tiger Kings with their working-class buffoonery to the indulgence of the Real Housewives, and how whiteness is the standard of having your story told, all serving up an incredibly regressive picture of people under the shield of “this is just people being people.” They wrap up the interview by touching on the hold reality TV has on our culture, from forming para-social relationships in the internet age to gifting us our 45th president. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon and Matt as they unpack Charlie Kirk's obsession with kids, and letting liberation movements run wild with supporting the self-confidence and identity of our youngest generations, and the flip the right is trying to pull by portraying queer Disney employees as the “elite” while the ones actually in power, their bosses, shut down progressive pushes inside the company, and fund homophobic bills outside of it. Wren from South Oregon calls in as she unpacks the importance of decentralized currency when it comes to access to hormones amid a shutdown on trans healthcare, and IMers celebrate today's PA-centric show. Ben Shapiro lists off lynching statistics like a baseball-obsessed pre-teen, Sean from Washington discusses political divides between union members and union leaders, and Alex from NY gives his weekly matchups, plus, your calls and IMs! Today we are back with another episode of Going Deeper with The Viall Files. We are joined by former stripper and now political candidate, Alexandra Hunt. On this episode we talk about breaking down the stereotypes of sex workers, why running a platform in support of sex workers is important, how the sex industry has massive amounts of stigma even though many enjoy the content it produces, and why many hide their past as a stripper. We also talk about using TikTok as a platform for marketing a campaign and how pushing sex work to the underground only makes things more dangerous. Then we welcome our mediation couple to help navigate a situation in which their partner has given an ultimatum to get engaged within four years of dating, or they would break up. We help figure out if this ultimatum is reasonable, why there's hesitation, and how a ring may not be the best symbol of commitment. We end our episode playing a game where we guess if a famous quotation was said from a historical figure or someone from pop culture!  “You can't prevent something from ending.” Please make sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode and as always send in your relationship questions to asknick@kastmedia.com to be a part of our Monday episodes.  Check out our new "Introvert" merch at http://www.viallfiles.com today! This week we virtually traveled to Philly to get the skinny on a district that will be the talk of the town, or dare we say the talk of the City of Brotherly Love, as we head into the 2022 midterms. In our explorations sans cheesesteak, we chatted with candidate and congressional hopeful, Alexandra Hunt about her campaign, the ins-and-outs of Philly's political landscape, and the change she hopes to bring to the table. Touching on issues in her district and beyond, we covered territory from unions to education, giving specific focus to The New Deal for Education. P.S.
