We continue our Best of 2024 episodes with an episode from the Democracy Decoded podcast, with host Simone Leeper. In the end, the worst of everyone's election fears — political violence, overt foreign interference or a razor-thin margin between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump leading to a hotly contested legal battle — did not come to pass. Instead, Donald Trump won a plurality of votes for president, and did so decisively. On January 20, 2025, he will once again become the country's most powerful executive. His victory raises weighty questions for the experts at Campaign Legal Center. Trump ran explicitly on a platform of behaving like an authoritarian, promising to fire U.S. civil servants, threatening opponents with jail, and brandishing military force against would-be dissenters. As his return to power approaches, we grapple with a paradoxical election, in which voters declared their preference for the candidate who repeatedly threatened the American system as we know it.Joining Simone in this episode are Trevor Potter, CLC's president and founder, and CLC senior vice presidents Paul M. Smith and Bruce Spiva. They offer their forecasts for the uncertain years ahead and explain what this election did (and did not) signify about the health of American democracy.Read the full transcriptHost and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at CLC, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Trevor Potter is President at Campaign Legal Center. A Republican former Chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Trevor was general counsel to John McCain's 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns and an adviser to the drafters of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. To many, he is perhaps best known for his recurring appearances on The Colbert Report as the lawyer for Stephen Colbert's super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, during the 2012 election, a program that won a Peabody Award for excellence in reporting on money in politics. The American Bar Association Journal has described Trevor as “hands-down one of the top lawyers in the country on the delicate intersection of politics, law and money.” Trevor is the author of several books and manuals on lobbying regulation and disclosure, campaign finance and federal election law. He has provided testimony and written statements to Congress on federal election proposals, campaign finance regulation and, recently, the effects of the January 6th attack on our democracy. He has also taught campaign finance law at the University of Virginia School of Law and Oxford University, and he has appeared widely in national broadcast and print media. During the 2020 election season, Trevor was named to the cross-partisan National Task Force on Election Crises.Bruce Spiva is Senior Vice President at Campaign Legal Center. He is an attorney and community leader who has spent his over 30-year career fighting for civil rights and civil liberties, voting rights, consumer protection, and antitrust enforcement.Over the past three decades, he has tried cases and argued appeals in courtrooms across the country, including arguing against vote suppression in the United States Supreme Court in 2021. In 2022, in his first run for public office, Bruce mounted a competitive run in the primary election for Washington, D.C. Attorney General. In addition to founding his own law firm where he practiced for eleven years, Bruce has held several leadership and management positions as a partner at two national law firms. Most recently, Bruce served as the Managing Partner of the D.C. Office and on the firm-wide Executive Committee of Perkins Coie LLP, where he also had an active election law practice. He first-chaired twelve voting rights and redistricting trials across the country, and argued numerous voting rights appeals in U.S. circuit courts and state supreme courts during his tenure at Perkins.Paul M. Smith is Senior Vice President at Campaign Legal Center. He works directly with CLC's talented team of litigators to protect and advance American democracy through innovative litigation strategies.Paul has four decades of experience litigating a wide range of cases. He has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court 21 times and secured numerous victories, including in the important cases advancing civil liberties and civil rights, Lawrence v. Texas, the landmark gay rights case, and Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Ass'n, which established First Amendment rights of those who produce and sell video games. In addition, Paul has argued several voting rights cases at the Supreme Court, including Vieth v. Jubelirer and Gill v. Whitford, involving partisan gerrymandering, LULAC v. Perry, involving the legality of Texas's mid-decade redrawing of congressional districts and Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, involving the constitutionality of a voter identification law. He served as counsel for amici in several key campaign finance merits cases including McCutcheon v. FEC (on behalf of Democratic House members), Arizona Free Enterprise Club's Freedom Club PAC v. Bennett (on behalf of the Committee for Economic Development) and Citizens United v. FEC (on behalf of the Committee for Economic Development).Additional InformationDemocracy Decoded PodcastMore shows from The Democracy Group

Welcome to The Hangar Z Podcast, brought to you by Vertical Helicasts. This is part one of a three-part series. This series is important for all public safety aviation units, because we discuss the audit released by the LA City Controller's office on the LAPD Air Support Division. The LAPD Air Support Division is well equipped to deal with and respond to the report to justify its program based on the stats it keeps and the details of its program. We many times have discussed how air support programs are the low-hanging fruit when it comes to politicians and bean counters. This three-part series will talk about LAPD's air support program and how what they do will help shape the way your agency keeps track of stats and program information. To discuss the audit we brought in Mike Daly, who retired from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after nearly 34 years of service. If you ever went to LAPD's Air Crew course, you most likely heard Daly's course and his legendary one liners. Daly grew up in Latham, New York, enlisting in the military immediately aftergraduating high school in 1976. After his discharge from active duty, he returned toNew York and attended college. In May 1983, he was hired by the LAPD and completednearly 34 years of service with the below listed assignments.Daly worked his way to Air Support, having worked assignments in patrol, including 77th. He was a metro K9 handler, worked rampart as Gang Unit OIC sergeant and watch commander before he was selected to the air support division as a watch commander and command pilot. Daly also completed 24 years of military service with the U. S. Army in both the active and reserve components. SSG Daly served over seven years on active duty including an 18-month combat tour in Iraq. The L.A. City Controller's audit questions the time and resources dedicated to the LAPD Air Support Division's Regional Disaster Preparedness Training exercise, which is also known as the LAPD Chili Fly In. In this episode we talk about the importance of the exercise and how the documentation of the exercise more than justifies its existence. Alexandra ran for Congress in 2022, challenging a longtime local politician, because she didn't want anyone in our community to be unseen or unheard, anymore. Peter and Ray discuss how Bitwise Industries has not paid business taxes to the City of Fresno since September 2021, according to a letter released by the City of Fresno on Wednesday. The two dig deep on the topic. A letter from Mayor Jerry Dyer and addressed to founders Jake Soberal and Irma Olguin, Jr., reveals that “Bitwise-related entities have not reported any gross receipts nor paid City business taxes since September of 2021.” The letter requests accounting documents to be sent to the City Controller within 30 days of receipt of the letter threatening “further action against Bitwise and its Board of Directors” if it is not received. In the days before Bitwise furloughed its entire workforce, company co-CEO Jake Soberal was busy calling, texting, and emailing local business leaders in hopes of obtaining bridge loans to navigate through a financial squeeze. Black citizens in Chicago flooded the city council meeting on Wednesday to express concerns over the city's plan to allocate $51 million to support migrants in the city.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It includes pay raises for city workers, nearly doubling the amount of spending on the city's drainage and street repair program, and putting more than $400 million in savings, the largest reserves for the city in recent memory. And, while that all sounds fairly rosy, there's still some reason for concern about the city's financial situation in the coming years, according to City Controller Chris Brown. Annise Parker, President and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund and LGBTQ Victory Institute talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the importance of endorsing openly LGBTQ political candidates for local, state and federal elective offices. Currently there are 1200 openly LGBTQ people serving in offices across America but we need at least 30,000 to come close to leveling the political scope in this country. The LGBTQ Victory Fund works to achieve this goal and sustain equality by increasing the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government while ensuring they reflect the diversity of those they serve. We all know how successful the religious right has been in stacking the political field against our community. Now is the time to support LGBTQ candidates in their quest to advance our progressive values. To be considered for endorsement by the Victory Fund and Victory Institute candidates must be openly LGBTQ, pro-choice and support an individual's right to privacy. It's also crucial that they support the rights of transgender individuals, demonstrate community support and have a realistic plan to win. Candidates must additionally demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to advance LGBTQ civil rights through the legislative or regulatory process and demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to safeguard privacy and reproductive freedom. Victory Fund was founded in 1991 by LGBTQ activists and donors who recognized the success of EMILY's List at attracting attention and support for women candidates for public office and applied the success of this model to advance equality for our LGBTQ community. We talked to Annise about what she hopes to accomplish at the Victory Fund and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. Annise Parker is the first former elected official to lead the Victory Fund and Victory Institute after serving six years as a Houston City Council member, six years as City Controller and six years as Mayor of Houston becoming the first openly LGBTQ mayor of a major American city. In the private sector Annise spent 20 years working in the oil and gas industry including 18 years with Mosbacher Energy Company. She also co-owned “Inklings” a lesbian/feminist bookstore for 10 years. Mayor Parker and her wife Kathy Hubbard have been together since 1991 and are advocates for adoption with three daughters, a son and three grandchildren. In January 2018, Rebecca Rynhart was sworn in as the first woman City Controller in Philadelphia history. Before that, she served as Mayor Kenney’s Chief Administration Officer, and during the Nutter administration, she served as Treasurer and then Budget Director. This year, she is seeking re-election to continue her work. In this episode, you’ll hear how Rebecca initially worked in Finance on Wall Street. After years of seeing governments being taken advantage of by the private sector, she quit - and took a huge pay cut - to enter public service. That decision to leave Bear Sterns in the spring of 2008 turned out to be pretty lucky, as the entire firm collapsed 3 weeks later. She would become Treasurer of Philadelphia at the height of the Great Recession. And, as you’ll hear, she had to make some tough calls to get the city through it. Eventually, she craved the ability to affect more change for Philadelphia. So, she ran for office and took on an incumbent. Despite heavy odds, she won. This Episode is supported by Crossbeam. Crossbeam is hiring! Check out their available positions here.

People thought Rebecca Rhynhart was crazy when she decided to run for Philadelphia controller. At the time, the city never had a woman in the position. Rhynhart also did not have a traditional political background, working on Wall Street for seven years before transitioning to city government. In Philadelphia, she took on the role of city treasurer, budget director and chief administrative officer prior to jumping into the controller race. Despite the doubts, Rhynhart shocked thepolitical establishment by ousting a three-term incumbent to become the city’s first female controller in 2018. Now, she’s shaking up the old-school political climate by auditing public spending and identifying ways to help taxpayers get the most for their money. On this episode, I'm talking with a former Mayor of the Greatest in the World! Mayor Annise Parker served as the Mayor of Houston, Texas from 2010 to 2016, but before that, she was a triple major at Rice Universit. After graduation, she accidentally rode the tech wave in the oil and gas industry. When Mayor Parker realized she was working to support her volunteer habits, she decided to run for a position in local government. And lost. And lost again. But learned from those experiences and went on to serve the city of Houston for nearly 20 years as a councilmember, City Controller, and of course, Mayor. These days Mayor Parker is the President & CEO of the Victory Fund and Victory Institute, an organization dedicated to electing openly gay LGBTQ people who can further equality at all levels of government.
