With Mike sidelined this week, please enjoy this classic episode of TWIB History. From its founding in 1939 through 1973, Little League Baseball refused to let girls play, and was deeply and intransigently committed to that position until a New Jersey court decision forced them to relent only 46 years ago this week. Mike and Bill look back on the history of women and girls playing baseball prior to that decision and the suit that forced Little League Baseball to welcome girls. They are also joined by Dr. Justine Siegal (@justinebaseball) of Baseball For All to discuss her journey as a player, coach, and advocate for girls to have access to the game. Plus, happy birthday to Dwight Evans and Edgardo Alfonzo.
Hour 1 of The Dawn Stensland Show: Local News Headlines/News Rundown In an email late Thursday night, Mayor Jim Kenney’s office announced Philadelphia’s city-wide mask mandate would be repealed. Earlier in the day, Kenney appeared on a Washington Post podcast in which he vigorously defended reinstatement of the mandate—even labeling those who disagreed with the mandate as “selfish.” During his interview with the Washington’s Post Paige Winfield Cunningham, Mayor Kenney denied that crime overall is rising in Philadelphia and blamed the city’s uptick in violent crime on Pennsylvania’s relaxed gun laws—claiming it’s harder to get a driver’s license than a gun. Yeadon City Council announced they will begin searching for a new police chief. Former police Chief Anthony Paparo is currently suing the county for wrongful termination, alleging he was terminated because of his skin color. On Thursday, Congressman Dwight Evans announced a $51 billion plan to stem gun violence in the nation’s largest cities. In order to fund the proposed legislation, the U.S. Congress and Senate would need to pass both the VICTIM Act and Build Back Better. On Thursday, the recreational sale of marijuana became legal throughout the state of New Jersey.

Police in Sioux City say two people have been arrested and charged in the killing of a man who was shot after he came to the aid of his girlfriend, who was being attacked. 22-year-old Martez Harrison, of Sioux City, died after being shot around 1 a.m. Saturday outside Uncle Dave’s bar on West Third Street. Police later arrested 17-year-old Dwight Evans and 20-year-old Lawrence Canady. Police say the shooting happened after Harrison and Canady argued, and Harrison called his girlfriend to pick him up. Police say when the woman arrived, Canady assaulted her, and Harrison came to her defense. He and Canady fought, and police say Evans shot Harrison while the man was on the ground. The Sioux City Police Department is reviewing an incident that happened early Thursday at Perkins near downtown Sioux City. The department also released body camera from the incident. Ahhh… this episode takes me back. It takes me back to my childhood years in Hooksett, New Hampshire, hanging out with my buddies in the neighborhood trading baseball cards. I was a Red Sox fan and would collect cards of Jim Rice, Carl Yastremski, Dwight Evans, and lots of other Boston greats. I also collected baseball cards and memorabilia for Steve Garvey, the first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers. I have a cousin who lives in LA, so that was the connection there. It was fun and all of my friends thought our treasures would appreciate in value and we would be set for life! Yet, the baseball card industry hit rough times, as the market ended up being flooded with cards that ultimately become worthless. I'm sure my friends who bought complete sets every year were crushed. Well, what's old is new again and trading cards are hot! This time the card issuers are much smarter in their releases by having a scarce supply to drive up demand. It's very similar to what the sneaker industry has experienced. To capitalize on this trend, StarStock has built a marketplace that essentially operates like a stock market for sports cards. Fans and card hobbyists can buy, sell, and invest in their favorite athletes while the sports cards are stored in a centralized vault, so there is no actual exchange of the cards. The company recently announced its $8M Series A round of funding led by Andreessen Horowitz. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * A deep discussion on the sports trading cards industry and how it has come full circle. * Scott's background story including his entrepreneurial roots and building a company with his sister, Lynn, a recent Forbes Next 1000 recipient. * What led him down the path of starting StarStock and working with Nigel Eccles, a Co-Founder of FanDuel, who helped get the company started along with StarStock Co-Founder Mike Kuchera. * All the details on StarStock and how the business works. * The challenges of building a two-sided marketplace. * And so much more. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast. Look, I hate to do the old…”I remember when I was kid…” start to a story, I hated it when others around me did this when I actually was a kid, and I hate doing it now. But, with all that qualification out of the way...I'm about to do it, so forgive me. Thanks. I think we all have moments where we graduate from being solely sports participants and fans to having a more broad appreciation of the business of sports. The first time I started to realize the entanglements between sports and business was as a little league youngster. No, it was not the sponsored names on the back of our jerseys from Valpak or Sylvester's restaurant. Rather the memory that vividly sticks out for me is the cheesy local ads created by the stars of my then-favorite team...the Boston Red Sox. I remember vividly watching Wade Boggs, before he became a traitor and went to the Yankees, reading an advertisement for Hood Ice Cream. He's standing on the field, clearly reading from off-camera cue cards and telling everyone how they should eat more Hood ice cream and that if you came to an upcoming game, you'd get a free mini red sox baseball helmet sponsored by Hood. This was a lightbulb moment for me, and I wondered aloud how much extra ice cream was sold because of Wade Boggs telling kids like me to do so. I told my mom we had to buy Hood because Wade Boggs said so. Frankly, she didn't give a crap about Wade Boggs, so she bought the store brand at Country Fare Star Market in Stow, Mass if you are wondering. I found myself paying more and more attention to this connection, this association, after that point. Dwight Evans endorsing local car dealerships, Jim Rice talking up OceanSpray juice box night. Brands have always sought out sports franchises to build their reputation, move more products and grow awareness of their brand. These mutually beneficial partnerships between brands and sports have done nothing but grow since my halcyon days. The revenue of the North American sports sponsorship market was estimated at approximately 17 billion dollars in 2018 and is expected to grow to over 20 billion U.S. dollars by 2022. This figure, in 2018, accounts for around 70 percent of the total sponsorship market. So that means, sports partnerships comprised the vast majority of the sponsorship market -- far more than entertainment, causes, the arts, festivals, fairs and annual events. Sponsorships are activated today in far more robust ways -- the advertisements have improved, but so have the in-stadium, social media, and digital marketing methodologies. The only limit is creativity. Notice, in the stats I referred to earlier - over 17 billion dollars of revenue was from the North American sports sponsorship market. The growth market, the exciting place to be right now in sports… is the global market. In 2018, global sponsorship spending was 65 billion dollars around 70% of which was spent in sports - so the total market for sports sponsorship across the globe, was around 45 billion dollars. Teams are investing in their global reach more than ever - and it's a perfect relationship. Here to talk about the growth of global sports sponsorships is my man Jason Clerkin, the Orlando Magic's Sr Manager Global Partnership Activation -- here's Jason: Questions for Jason Clerkin, Orlando Magic Sr. Manager, Global Partnership Activation: 1: So excited to speak with you Jason – this has been a long time in the works! Let's start a bit at the beginning and work our way up – undergrad at UCF in Sports Business Management – I'm pretty sure at that point you weren't saying to yourself, I'm going to be the Sr. Mgr of Global Partnership Activation for an NBA team – you may not have even known what that was! So take us back a bit – what was the plan then,

AOC continues to impress with her observations about that "uptick" in crime. In addition, the media still tries to make it all about Trump and the president steals a policy position from Jeb Bush. With caucus and primary season around the corner, it’s only a matter of time until candidates shift gears and begin expanding their campaigns in battleground states. Come November, voters in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin will play a critical role in determining what party will take the White House. Although Pennsylvania handed President Obama victories in 2008 and 2012, voters decided to take a chance on President Trump in 2016, awarding him 20 electoral votes. This week, Politics with Amy Walter traveled to Pennsylvania to hear from politicians in the state about the lessons learned from 2016 and what’s at stake in 2020. Congressman Brendan Boyle, Congressman Dwight Evans, and Philadelphia Councilmember Kendra Brooks sat down with Amy Walter. Plus, Jerome Dillard, the State Director for Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing (EXPO), highlights the implications of failing to engage disenfranchised voters. Also, the New York Times’ Margot Sanger-Katz explains the Republican-led lawsuit that attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and what that means for the 20 million Americans that would lose coverage. Finally, Steve Mistler, Chief Political Correspondent of Maine Public Radio, weighs in on Senator Susan Collins’ legacy and how it might change in light of the ongoing impeachment trial.

The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast. When I was growing up in the Boston area, I used to get a kick out of the regional ads with the local sports stars.Dwight Evans would be reading an ad for the local Chevy dealer and it would be hilariously terrible. You can picture these guys showing up, never reading the script, and then trying to read a cue card being held by some poor intern above the camera. The local sports star would have their eyes clearly above the camera, they'd be reading at a very poor level and there would be some terrible dad joke at the end."Hello everyone… I am… Red Sox right fielder...Dwight Evans, and you should head down to Bob's chevrolet in Chicopee and check on the deals they've got for a brand new 1985 Chevy ...Blazer. We've got all different shades of Red...like my sox."And then they'd smile some toothy grin and still not be looking at the camera. You knew this was like the 20th take and finally, the producer just said “Oh F it, that's good enough, it's a wrap”These cracked me up… and I wish they still happened as often as they used to when I was 10. We'd literally imitate them in gym class, a bunch of 5th-grade kids making fun of our local idols for reading with less aptitude and personality than we did. This was a big deal for the athletes back in the day… they made really good money back then, but nothing like what they do today. Salaries have far outpaced inflation, so the borderline Hall of Fame players don't need to peddle the local furniture store for a free couch and 5k. It was a lot of work, which more often than not resulted in a crappy advertisement that likely didn't help the business or the player's brand.Things have changed. Thankfully for the better, although I really miss those old ads. So how have things changed -- well, social is a huge part of it. Today's athletes grew up with it, are comfortable on the platforms, have their own brands, and can share their own voice directly to their followers.Plus, we have more and more brands telling themselves -- wait, I make a vegan snack bar, and I'm sure there is an athlete out there who is vegan… maybe we should partner up?This idea of hyper-targeting in alignment with a specific athlete makes all the sense in the world because they'll speak to the product with more enthusiasm and expertise, than just some rando talking about a chevy blazer in red, when they drive a Porsche. This extra targeting, this emphasis on social, this idea to connect brands and athletes -- sparked something deep within today's guest.Ishveen Anand is the founder and CEO of OpenSponsorship, a platform that has created a smarter, simpler approach to sponsorship marketing. Allowing brands to connect with 5000+ athletes, engage with their target audience, increase ROI and generate great content. She was also named Forbes 30 under 30 in 2015, and to INC top 100 female founders list in 2019 -- she's as impressive as they come, so without further ado… here's Ishveen Anand, straight from her office in New York City...you'll understand why I mentioned that in a few minutes when you hear fire alarms and police sirens in the background…Questions for Ishveen Anand, CEO and Founder OpenSponsorship1: I'm really excited to speak with you about your organization OpenSponsorship…but first I want to understand you and your motivation a little better. You attended Oxford, graduate with a degree in economics and management, and your career skyrockets, in fact, you're a CEO within about 5 years of graduating. And then, you launch OpenSponsorship. What was your mindset during this time -- did you always have this goal of “someday I'm going to start my own thing…” or did it happen more organically where you saw an opportunity and just went for it?2: I'm seeing more and more high-level sports executives who come from an Economics background, which seems somewhat unconventional in the sports world.

Lobey, Lynchie and Hank talk about Dwight Evans being added to the Baseball Hall of Fame Modern Era Committee ballot for consideration. He has some astounding numbers when you look a the 1980's decade. They also talked about Nomar Garciaparra and his transition from popular, young superstar to disgruntled egomaniac. Lynch has a story about some of Nomar's ugly behavior! There is also quite a story about why Manny Ramirez once missed a game and Hank tells a story about Curt Schilling, as told to him by Bill Monbouquette! They also talked about the Patriots' loss to the Ravens, which team remaining on their schedule can still beat them and how much of the loss was Tom Brady's fault. Did you know Lobey and Lynchie were also Hollywood actors? Yes they were. They'll tell you that story and a little tease about a big time Bob Lobel golf experience involving Jack Nicklaus!

For U.S. Congressman Dwight Evans, cannabis reform is a matter of both medical justice and criminal justice. Evans realized not only that cannabis can save patients' lives, but also that the war on drugs was undeniably a major reason for the massive prison population in Pennsylvania. Since then, Evans has developed a firm belief that we must seriously reevaluate the plant. He has learned that having meaningful conversations about reform and justice with people who come from diverse backgrounds is the first step in "ensuring that the communities that have been left out under our watch" will not get left out ever again.

Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwight_EvansDwight Evans made his major league debut with the Red Sox on September 16, 1972, during a Red Sox 10–0 win over the Cleveland Indians.[3] Evans appeared in a total of 18 games late in the season, batting 15-for-57 (.263) with one home run and six RBIs. Early in his major league career, Evans was primarily a defensive standout (he would win eight Gold Glove Awards) with a modest bat. In the second half of his career, he became a powerful hitter, twice winning a Silver Slugger Award. Originally, Evans was assigned the uniform number 40, but quietly he wanted to wear number 24, the number of his idol Willie Mays. In 1973, the Sox gave him number 24, the number he wore for the rest of his career.

Making Ideas Matter is a primer on mobilizing political power to achieve enlightened goals in a democracy. This is a book about how good politicians can compromise without abandoning moral principles. This is a book that will inspire future political leaders to hold on to their idealism rather than spiral into a cynical distrust of politics and government. Pennsylvania State Rep. Dwight Evans shows us that politics is a noble art, and with enough research, hard work and knowledge of the legislative process, politics can be the art of the possible. Dwight Evans is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He has represented the 203rd District (Philadelphia County) since 1981.
