The Filmlosophers and Intern Amy wish you happy holidays as they bestow another entry in the Season of Suffering with an Avengers-level Hallmark holiday film in Three Wise Men and a Baby. The Curmudgeonly Compatriots gift each other the wonderful present of confusion as the mental sanity of the demographic for these types of films comes into question. As the film markets itself to have an all-star cast of Who's Who in the Hallmark holiday film universe, does the film dive deeper into the effort of other areas like the writing and direction? Or does the Avenger's call to action follow only with an Avengers-level flop? Well, grab your surrendered babies at the door and popcorn and find out in this week's special holiday episode of The Filmosphers!

This week I review newest movie on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel titled "North to Home" starring Barbara Niven, Lyndsy Fonseca, Kimberley Sustad and Erica Durance. Directed by Ali Liebert. This movie was all about the women. It touched upon subjects of forgiveness, communication, familial love and survivors' guilt. The actresses performances were powerful. It left an emotional impact on me. I was left curled up on my bed crying, watching the last two minutes of this movie. It was just perfect in my opinion. Newest podcast is out reviewing the newest Hallmark Movies and Mysteries releases titled Our Christmas Journey starring Holly Robinson Peete, Lyriq Bent and Nik Sanchez as well as Every Time the Bell Rings starring Erin Cahill, Brittany Ishibashi, Ali Liebert and Wes Brown. We both liked the movies. Both movies made history. Our Christmas Journey stars Nik Sanchez, the first autistic actor to play an autistic character. We just wish that we saw more of Marcus' POV throughout the movie, like a look inside of the program. Even though he is non-verbal, it doesn't mean communication is impossible. For a movie that totes about representation for the disabled community, the disabled character was silenced (I don't just mean by making Marcus non-verbal) and not really seen through his eyes. Every Time a Bell Rings was a great movie about three sisters. It made Hallmark Christmas movie featuring the first interracial lesbian kiss with Nora and Maizy. We enjoyed each sisters' storylines, also them looking for the bell, but the storyline with Charlotte and Liam was a weak point. It was definitely not needed. oin our newly minted Facebook group whose purpose is to highlight diversity and inclusion Hallmark Channel has taken. https://www.facebook.com/groups/421837762791433 Support the podcast and buy me a coffee. In recent years, actress Rukiya Bernard has spoken publicly and frequently about the blatant racism and racist micro-aggressions she's experienced as a Black woman in the film and television industry. She's sat on numerous diversity and inclusion panels. She's written about it, including in a creative essay titled Dear Becky that we published on the YVR Screen Scene site. She's spoken about it in multiple media interviews. In short, Rukiya has done a lot of work for a lot of years to make her point – but with The Blactor, she's taking us further than she's ever taken us before. She's not only telling us about the realities of life for Black actors; she's showing us. She's pulling us in and stirring our hearts and minds and souls in a way that only art can do. Rukiya wrote and directed The Blactor, which will have its world premiere at the 2021 Vancouver International Film Festival. Here's how VIFF describes the film: “On her way to another demeaning audition for another stereotypical role, a Black actress is stopped by an undercover cop who believes she's involved in a break and entry.” The film features an astounding performance by Keeya King as Kadija, AKA the Blactor, as well as Mark Hildreth, Teana-Marie Smith, Ali Liebert, and Enid-Raye Adams. In this poignant interview, Rukiya speaks about her journey to this moment, and the changes she'd like to see moving forward. Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

Whatever the project, Julia communicates the pain, sadness, anger, and fleeting joy of her characters with empathy and astonishing ferocity. Julia's latest film is Come True. She plays Sarah Dunne, a teenage runaway who takes part in a sleep study that turns into a nightmarish descent into the depths of her mind. Come True is the newest offering from Canadian genre favourite, Anthony Scott Burns, who also directed Our House. In this illuminating episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast – an episode for people who love acting, or who seek to understand what it is that actors love about acting – Julia talks about the responsibility she feels towards the marginalized characters she plays, pursuing truth and purpose in her work, and why owls are very, very cool. Ali Liebert won a Canadian Screen Award for her nuanced portrayal of queer icon Betty McRae on Bomb Girls – but Betty is only part of Ali's story. As a teen, Ali pursued musical theatre dreams and sang “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” at the Pacific National Exhibition. In the years since Betty, Ali has appeared in all manner of indie, big budget, and network projects, from BH90210 to Mech X4 to Ten Days in the Valley to The Devout. She's also expanded into producer and director territory, including Cooking With Love and Spotlight on Christmas and the deeply moving Crazy8s film The Quieting, which stars friend-of-the-podcast Sara Canning in a queer identity story mined from moments in Ali's own life. Sara and fellow friend-of-the-podcast Gabrielle Rose starred in Ali's feature-length directorial debut, Amish Abduction, for which she was recently nominated for a big award from the Directors Guild of Canada. Ali is also an activist, and an advocate for queer youth. In 2019, when Hallmark pulled an ad featuring a gay couple, Ali – who is a star for the network – used her platform to speak out against homophobia in the film and television industry. In the fall finale of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Ali discusses her move into the director's chair, how Bomb Girls' Betty McRae changed her life, and her lifelong pursuit of truth. *The conversation with Ali and Charlotte is so informative, that I couldn’t bring myself to edit any more than what I did. Lucky for us all, I have divided the pod into parts 1 and 2. Episode 12 of the ‘Schmootz On podcast is with Ali Liebert and Charlotte Hegele of the award winning drama series, Bomb Girls, about the Canadian women who risked their lives in a munitions factory building bombs for the Allied Forces during WWII. Long before there was Rosie the Riveter, the women of Canada stepped up to serve their country in factories such as the fictional Victory Munitions by providing a crucial workforce. They played their own necessary part in winning the war against the legitimate Axis of evil. War is hell on the home front, too, as the trials of these women reveal deep, personal strengths that push past their inner insecurities. All are running from something both literal and figurative, in that they run into each other, gives this diverse band of sisters an unlikely solidarity in Victory. Ali portrays Betty, the tough-talking girl from the rural prairie with a hard cynical skin honed from years of hiding her personal truths. Closeted in more ways than the obvious, Betty dons her protective battle dress in the form of a barbed, impatient tongue that keeps strangers at a safe distance…until she meets Kate. Kate (Marion), played by Charlotte, is on the run from an abusive, fanatical father that utilizes the evangelical cloth as a ligature to keep his family bound to him and his street ministry. The Canadian selective service and the associated work in the bomb factory provide a timely escape from a life of violence and persecution. Through Betty, she finds her champion, and through her singing, her voice. Ali and Charlotte (Ali calls her Charlie, which is so damn cute) were gracious enough to speak with me about their characters, what we can expect from season two, and about what is so special about Bomb Girls as a whole. Enjoy, and then check out Bomb Girls. A catch-up marathon of season one will air on REELZ channel (check your local listings) Wednesday, March 27, starting at 12:00 PM EDT/9:00 AM PDT.
